Description

On June 11, 2011, the government of Mozambique officially opened the Lake Niassa Reserve, which encompasses an area of 230 square miles and twenty communities, in addition to a 380 square mile buffer zone on land. The Reserve protects the species and natural habitats of the of the most biodiverse freshwater lake on earth while simultaneously supporting fishermen’s livelihoods and laying a path for broad-based growth in sustainable tourism and related sectors.

USAID has worked in partnership with the government of Mozambique, the World Wildlife Fund, and the Coca-Cola Company to protect the species and natural habitats of the of the most biodiverse freshwater lake on earth.
