2000-3000 years ago in the Philippine Cordillera Region, terraces were built to maximize farming space in mountainous regions, and to prevent erosion. These terraces are ancient, rambling, man-made structures whose walls are made of compacted earth and stones. They’re up to 7m/23ft high and were carved by hand out of whole mountainsides on slopes of up to 70%. These unique structures were recognized by UNESCO and inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1995.
