Room Tapes

Stephen Weigel Wonderful work with microtonality - this album is classic Byrnes, with that driving sound, of warmth, big fat beats, tasteful distortion, delightful high-register scampering with kalimba-like instruments, with guitar-song. Brendan Byrnes plays a 22-edo guitar better than most people play 12-edo guitar. Favorite track: Far Out.

Blackle Mori This album is a transcendent experience. Brendan Byrnes's microtonal music always feels like it's reprogramming my mind on the fly to make me understand it, and I just love it. Favorite track: Cave Dance.

Ben Spees Brendan Byrnes' compositions have an instantly identifiable sound, yet are always intriguing and fresh. The lo-fi production on this release really makes it feel like a hidden treasure dug up from a forgotten warehouse in an alternate universe. "Room Tapes" continues his track record of making some of the best xenharmonic music out there.

about

This album was recorded on a 4-track cassette recorder, building on demos created on a computer.

As a teenager I learned how to write and record music on a small Tascam, writing and recording countless songs, and I've since been nostalgic for the limited capabilities and noisy, warm sonics that come with cassette recording.

In the summer of 2018 I lost original session files for a handful of unfinished demos I had been working on for a future release, and I was left with only stereo files of rough mixes. Rather than recreating the songs in the digital domain, I decided to transfer the rough mixes onto a 4 track and finish them in the lo-fi analog world. So, this album has some programmed elements, but most of it was tracked and overdubbed direct to cassette.

All songs are in 22 EDO.

22 EDO electric guitars made by Metatonal Music. Digital and Analog Synths re-tuned by H-Pi Instruments CSE and TBX1.
