Though lengthening a muscle by stretching could be helpful, many people will experience no real length changes day over day or long term by just stretching alone.

A muscle might be tight due to weakness, so while stretching can temporarily ease the feeling of tension, it only treats the symptom. Stretching doesn’t solve the underlying issue of why the muscle is tight to begin with.
