佛教艺术中与《法华经》相关的壁画、雕塑等,有具体的个例分析,不错的艺术史著作。图片相当精美,解说也还不错。关于多宝塔、镜像等的分析,很有洞见。

intro, chap4&5. 视觉文化的方法,纳入主体感知;壁画的想象世界构建不止来源于经文,还来自杂糅奇异元素的文化传统的先在心理结构。但是论述仍然过于依赖文本证据,尤其第五章,忽视不同版本的佛经存在的差异,而壁画创作者所依靠的版本仍是未知数。

虽然如Howard、Wenzel、胡素馨、缪哲等批判的那样,本书有许多不严谨的地方,但也确实有许多灵光乍现的地方,特别是当我想写镜殿的时候读到了Mirroring and Transformation,只不过论证大多不可靠,更多是文学性想象。

问题和结论都足够炫酷震撼,不是一眼望到头的无聊研究。然而图像分析和图文连连看拉跨到令人满脸黑人问号。艺术史这个学科赶紧毁灭吧。
