Who the hell needs my services? NOBODY I TELL YA. . . . . . . . I've been haunted by this thought in the past few weeks, and it only came from my attempt to find the logic behind my audience's buying decisions. In theory, I know why they buy and why they've always bought from me. Except my logic isn't always logicking (that's not even a word), especially if I'm in a creative rut. 🤪 Me talking to myself: These women are already making money in their businesses and are confident in themselves, it doesn't make sense to work with me?? 🤪 Also me: Woman, let's look at our current and previous clients and find the pattern. Okay, NOW I got it. ✨ Yes, the women I work with are amazing powerhouses who are already pretty successful, have scaled their businesses to 6 and 7-figures or are in the process of scaling. (aka the emerging stars) ✨ Yes, we do work on their speaking strategy so it brings them even MORE money. But that's not the MAIN reason why they come and came to me, and it's not the ONLY thing we work on together. These powerhouses come into my space because we have a system of VALUES that brings us together. 🔥 They respect their work and their audience, so they want to make sure that their expertise shines through the way they speak, and their audience receives the BEST version of themselves. Speaking beautifully is a form of respect, so you know 😉 🔥 They value excellence in their work and deeply care about how they show up. They care about their reputation, and they know your voice, how you speak and what you say precede any award, monetary result or magazine feature. 🔥 They value their time, so they want to make sure that their speaking opportunities, podcast interviews, TV appearances etc. are strategically delivered so they boost their reputation and sales. They don't speak to hear themselves speak, they want to speak with a PURPOSE. 💎 My clients come to me to have their talent put in the limelight, and have it polished up to diamond form. 💎 My clients come to me so that, in every room they're a part of, everyone shuts up when they open their mouth to speak. 💎 My clients come to me because they want to be MEMORABLE and REMEMBERED. I’ve previously written about the psychological condition known as a liminal phase. When a person faces an intense, abrupt change like the death of a spouse or child, the loss of a job or position of status, or a debilitating injury or illness, they enter into a liminal phase, in which their old, familiar role and identity are gone but they don’t yet know what the new role and identity will be. It’s an in-between time. I can tell you from personal experience that prolonged liminal phases are intensely challenging for a human psyche. I believe U.S. society is in a cultural liminal phase. In liminality a person’s identity is unclear; perhaps they were a wife or husband before but no longer are or were very physically strong and active but now are physically limited. I can remember as a young person having a sense of what America meant, what it stood for – things like democracy and opportunities for people to advance no matter where they started from. I identified with having American freedom, independence and strong entrepreneurial drive. I had passionate political views but it felt like people could disagree and still basically get along. Today, I have a hard time describing what the U.S. is all about. Large chunks of our population hold nearly diametrically-opposed visions of what America should be. My queer young adult fantasy Visions comes out this August 26th and I'm excited to show you the cover! It's by Mousam Banerjee and I think it's beautiful. In Visions Kate sees psychic visions of people in danger but only when she has an asthma attack - and she has severe asthma so intentionally triggering a vision in order to try and save someone and get more information could kill her. She's never been able to save someone in the past (or thinks she hasn't) but things start to change. It does have an awareness of trauma and mental health issues as I'm an abuse survivor and deal with resulting mental health issues, so it is written from a place of understanding that. It does have in the visions trying to prevent physical abuse and partner abuse, and the after effects of rape so someone being su1cidal or feeling su1cidal. There's also attempted murder, queerphobia, bullying, and of course asthma. It really does have strong girl characters, lesbian and nonbinary lesbian love and support. CAN SHORT STORIES PROVIDE A STEPPING STONE TO A FLOURISHING LITERARY CAREER? According to Australian author Frank Moorhouse, a short story is like a beautiful handmade toy - a specialised craft requiring talent, originality, creativity and skill. Not surprisingly, many of today’s successful writers have used this medium to launch their professional careers. And for good reason. Short stories have helped them hone their writing skills, develop the writing habit and inculcate a sense of discipline in their writing schedules. Contrary to what some editors and publishers believe, there is a growing market for the short story. Modern technology has offered a tremendous boost to the short story genre. The short story today can be made accessible to readers in a much quicker time frame and at a much lower cost. With so many online magazines, it’s now cheaper to produce and distribute more short fiction than ever before. This flexibility makes it possible to download a short story on a website, on a mobile phone or on a tablet; and a short story can be read and enjoyed anywhere and anytime – during a lunch break, in a doctor’s waiting room, on a short journey or a commute, or even whilst waiting in a queue! From the reader’s point of view there are several other advantages to a short story. The power of the short story lies in its brevity and compactness, providing a punch that is so different from a novel. The theme of the story, the setting, the plot, the characters, the conflict, the turning point and the resolution are all contained in a short space. And it is precisely this compactness that makes this form of writing so appealing. A short story provides a quick and easy read from start to finish in a short period of time, and often in a single sitting. In the words of Neil Gaiman, “Short stories are journeys you can make to the far side of the universe and still be back in time for dinner.” Apart from that, because of the media overload in today’s world, our attention spans are shrinking. This is why it is important to condense the message in a short and concise form and in a way that catches the attention of the reader and stimulates his curiosity. In the same way, short stories are a good means of inculcating the reading habit. They are great for reluctant readers, slow readers or anyone intimidated by books. Many famous and successful films and television series were based on short stories. “Malgudi Days” was made into a television serial of 54 episodes and 4 seasons and had become a household word in India. It was inspired by a series of 32 short stories written in 1943 by celebrated author, R.K. Narayan. So if you are an aspiring young writer, the short story would be a good means of kick starting your writing career. We all have a story inside us waiting to be told. And who knows, that yet to be written masterpiece may well find its way to a block buster series on Netflix! Go for it.

Perception It never fails to fascinate me how two people, selling the same products, in the same town can have wildly different perceptions of the market. One says he's never seen it so good. The other bemoans the economy, his customers, and his employees. The difference is perception. There is the truth and there is what we perceive as the truth. They are not necessarily the same. There are whole industries trying to influence your perception of them, their products, their issues. They use advertising, media, public relations, influencers, and anything and anyone else they can find. My personal perception is there has never been more effort attempting to influence perceptions than today. This makes it important for you to take charge of how you perceive things. Be careful about any messaging of doom and gloom. Guard your attitude. Frame your perceptions to help you become more successful. Do not allow others to program you. Is the glass half empty or half full? It's up to you to decide, not someone else.

When communicating listen twice before talking and start talking with a question. Be personal in your approach, go direct to the problem and list possible solutions with their pros and cons. Stimulate an open dialogue and invite to reflect on what will be the best option to create consensus. Do not forget to mention benefits, unknown factors, trade-offs and preconditions. Focus on a working plan and create an agreement about timeframe, weak points, deliverables, task and responsibilities. Make an effort to manage expectations so they become feasible and realistic and never talk more than half of what you listen.

This day, 15 years ago, I didn’t think I’d be writing on LinkedIn or any social media 15 years later. We had driven to Manchinbele, since May Day is a day off from labouring even for corporate  laborers 🙂 Watching the play of sunlight and shadow on the water’s surface… Feeling the hot breeze on our faces and smelling rain in the air… Google photos brought out these memories. Today, there’s no hint of rain, just the hot breeze. And I am writing on LinkedIn! I still have a healthy suspicion of all other social media, much to my friends’ despair. But LinkedIn is different… 15 years ago, I thought LinedIn was a naukri shop, where you peddled your resume and shopped around for jobs. A few months short of 15 years later, I was a champion lurker. I’d discovered that LinkedIn was more than a naukri shop, you see! Being quite paranoid of all social media, I lurked. Then slowly, very slowly, decided to start posting. Initially I was clueless. What should I write about? Why should I write about it? Why would anyone want to read what I write? But still, I  started. Then advice started pouring in, both on my feed and in my DMs. Talk about this, write about that… Format your post like this… Don’t write too much Don’t use complicated words… Avi, your post today absolutely struck a chord! I genuinely tried everything. But then, the best advice i received and the best advice I’d share with everyone: Be yourself.  If something feels uncomfortable, don’t do it.  If something feels forced, don’t do it. Write what YOU want to share that will help others. Write what YOU have learnt that will help others. Write YOUR experiences that will help others. And LinkedIn is the best place for this. I found people who like how I think… I found people ready to help out… I found people to just share thoughts and experiences… Despite my merry disregard for clever formatting, attention-grabbing hooks, dumbing down everything, and rarely sending connection requests (😂), I found clients who want my writing! I just hope I can consistently find them or they find me! Because my community is here to stay. Just as I am, quirks and all! PS: This pic was how Google reminded me of 15 years ago!
