The National Anti-Scam Centre says there have been more scam calls lately. You might get a call from someone pretending to be your bank or another service. You should not give your information when someone calls you and you were not expecting it. If you are not sure about a call you can hang up and call the number on your card or bill. CID staff members Ella and David (in the first picture) and Raylene and Sophie (in the second picture) made presentations at the PANDDA Conference this week. PANDDA stands for the Professional Association of Nurses in Developmental Disability Australia. Ella and David talked about things Ella has experienced in healthcare as a person with intellectual disability. They talked about health resources from CID, like our Just Include Me eLearning for health professionals. Raylene and Sophie talked about the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health. They talked about how CID will be working with the Centre to advocate for the health of people with intellectual disability. #IntellectualDisability #DisabilityHealth #DisabilityLeaders #JustIncludeMe

CID says yes to outlawing vilification of people with disability “It’s all about respect”, says our Vice-Chair Fiona McKenzie AM. Disability vilification was highlighted by the Disability Royal Commission (DRC) and has now been highlighted by the NSW Greens. In 2024, people with disability continue to experience disgusting vilification. As one CID member says, “Those words…. spastic, retard, you’re useless, are still very much around in the community.” Prior to the DRC report, the NSW Labor Government referred the outmoded Anti-Discrimination Act to the Law Reform Commission (LRC) for review. The review specifically includes whether the vilification provisions of the Act, which do not currently cover disability vilification, should be extended, and whether there should be positive duties to prevent vilification. The Law Reform Commissioners for this review include Kate Eastman SC who showed a deep understanding of issues facing people with disability from her extensive work on the DRC. CID is hopeful about what will come out of the LRC report but the timeframe for this is unclear. CID welcomes that the NSW Greens have now pressed for early action by introducing a bill to Parliament that would outlaw vilification of a person or group on the basis of disability. https://lnkd.in/guN9xSSa The Anti-Discrimination Act already outlaws vilification on the grounds of factors including race, religion and sexual orientation. One of our members with intellectual disability comments, “In the same way the gay and lesbian community went all out and tried to stop what happened with them, I think we need to stand up and get the laws to protect us.” CID stands with our members on fighting to meet this challenge.
