We investigate the effects of crystal field splitting in a doped two-band Hubbard model with different bandwidths within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), using a quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver. In addition to an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP) of the narrow band, which is adiabatically connected with the well-studied OSMP in the half-filled case without crystal field splitting, we find, for sufficiently strong interaction and a suitable crystal field, also an OSMP of the wide band. We establish the phase diagram (in the absence of magnetic or orbital order) at moderate doping as a function of interaction strength and crystal field splitting and show that also the wide-band OSMP is associated with non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the case of Ising type Hund rule couplings. Our numerical results are supplemented by analytical strong-coupling studies of spin order and spectral functions at integer filling.

In recent literature on trapped ultracold atomic gases, calculations for 2D-systems are often done within the Dynamical Mean Field Theory (DMFT) approximation. In this paper, we compare DMFT to a fully two-dimensional, self-consistent second order perturbation theory for weak interactions in a repulsive Fermi-Hubbard model. We investigate the role of quantum and of spatial fluctuations when the system is in the antiferromagnetic phase, and find that, while quantum fluctuations decrease the order parameter and critical temperatures drastically, spatial fluctuations only play a noticeable role when the system undergoes a phase transition, or at phase boundaries in the trap. We conclude from this that DMFT is a good approximation for the antiferromagnetic Fermi-Hubbard model for experimentally relevant system sizes.

Experimentally it remains a challenge to demonstrate antiferromagnetic correlations in ultracold fermionic quantum gases. We find that, while in balanced systems the Néel order parameter can point in any spatial direction, in imbalanced mixtures antiferromagnetism is strictly perpendicular to the quantization axis (i.e., the z-axis). Since, experimentally, one always has to assume some minimal imbalance this should have important consequences for ongoing experiments.

In order to describe unbalanced ultracold fermionic quantum gases on optical lattices in a harmonic trap, we investigate an attractive ($U<0$) asymmetric ($t_\uparrow\neq t_\downarrow$) Hubbard model with a Zeeman-like magnetic field. In view of the model's spatial inhomogeneity, we focus in this paper on the solution at Hartree-Fock level. The Hartree-Fock Hamiltonian is diagonalized with particular emphasis on superfluid phases. For the special case of spin-independent hopping we analytically determine the number of solutions of the resulting self-consistency equations and the nature of the possible ground states at weak coupling. Numerical results for unbalanced Fermi-mixtures are presented within the local density approximation. In particular, we find a fascinating shell structure, involving normal and superfluid phases. For the general case of spin-dependent hopping we calculate the density of states and the possible superfluid phases in the ground state. In particular, we find a new magnetized superfluid phase.

The anisotropic two-orbital Hubbard model is investigated at low temperatures using high-precision quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). We demonstrate that two distinct orbital-selective Mott transitions (OSMTs) occur for a bandwidth ratio of 2 even without spin-flip contributions to the Hund exchange, and we quantify numerical errors in earlier QMC data which had obscured the second transition. The limit of small inter-orbital coupling is introduced via a new generalized Hamiltonian and studied using QMC and Potthoff's self-energy functional method, yielding insight into the nature of the OSMTs and the non-Fermi-liquid OSM phase and opening the possibility for a new quantum-critical point.

In a Comment [cond-mat/0506138] on our recent e-print [cond-mat/0505106] Liebsch claimed "excellent correspondence" between our high-precision quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) data for the anisotropic two-band Hubbard model with Ising type exchange couplings and his earlier QMC results. Liebsch also claimed that the sequence of two orbital-selective Mott transitions, identified by us in this model, had already been reported in his earlier work. Here we demonstrate that both claims are incorrect. We establish that Liebsch's previous QMC estimates for the quasiparticle weight Z have relative errors exceeding 100% near transitions and cannot be used to infer the existence of a second Mott transition (for U_{c2}~2.5). We further show that Liebsch's attribution of our findings to his own earlier work is disproved by the published record. Consequently, the Comment is unwarranted; all results and formulations of our e-print remain valid.

We calculate the local Green function for a quantum-mechanical particle with hopping between nearest and next-nearest neighbors on the Bethe lattice, where the on-site energies may alternate on sublattices. For infinite connectivity the renormalized perturbation expansion is carried out by counting all non-self-intersecting paths, leading to an implicit equation for the local Green function. By integrating out branches of the Bethe lattice the same equation is obtained from a path integral approach for the partition function. This also provides the local Green function for finite connectivity. Finally, a recently developed topological approach is extended to derive an operator identity which maps the problem onto the case of only nearest-neighbor hopping. We find in particular that hopping between next-nearest neighbors leads to an asymmetric spectrum with additional van-Hove singularities.

We show that, at quarter filling, the system can exist in two phases depending on the coupling strength. The weak-coupling phase is dominated by RKKY exchange correlations while the strong-coupling phase is characterized by strong antiferromagnetic correlations of the channel degree of freedom. These two phases are separated by a quantum critical point. For conduction-band fillings of less than one quarter, we find a paramagnetic metallic phase at weak coupling and a ferromagnetic phase at moderate to strong coupling.

The availability of such an algorithm is essential for the investigation of broken-symmetry phases of interacting electron systems and for the computation of transport properties within the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The algorithm enables us to calculate the optical conductivity fully consistently on a regular lattice, e.g., for the semi-elliptical (Bethe) DOS. We discuss the relevant f-sum rule and present numerical results obtained using quantum Monte Carlo techniques.

We investigate the symmetric Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) on a three-dimensional cubic lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping and hybridization matrix elements. Using Gutzwiller's variational method and the Hubbard-III approximation (which corresponds to the exact solution of an appropriate Falicov-Kimball model in infinite dimensions) we demonstrate the existence of a quantum critical point at zero temperature. Below a critical value $V_c$ of the hybridization (or above a critical interaction $U_c$) the system is an {\em insulator} in Gutzwiller's and a {\em semi-metal} in Hubbard's approach, whereas above $V_c$ (below $U_c$) it behaves like a metal in both approximations. These predictions are compared with the density of states of the $d$- and $f$-bands calculated from Quantum Monte Carlo and NRG calculations. Our conclusion is that the half-filled symmetric PAM contains a {\em metal-semimetal transition}, not a metal-insulator transition as has been suggested previously.

We also study the changes in the density of states across the transition, which illustrate that the Fermi liquid breaks down before the gap opens.

The effect of in-chain and off-chain substitutions on 1D spin fluctuations in the spin-Peierls compound CuGeO_3 has been studied using Raman scattering in order to understand the interplay between defect induced states, enhanced spin-spin correlations and the ground state of low dimensional systems. In-chain and off-chain substitutions quench the spin-Peierls state and induce 3D antiferromagnetic order at T\leq 5 K. Consequently a suppression of a 1D gap-induced mode as well as a constant intensity of a spinon continuum are observed at low temperatures. A 3D two-magnon density of states now gradually extends to higher temperatures T\leq 60K compared with pure CuGeO_3. This effect is more pronounced in the case of off-chain substitutions (Si) for which a Néel state occurs over a larger substitution range, starting at very low concentrations. Besides, additional low energy excitations are induced. These effects, i.e. the shift of a dimensional crossover to higher temperatures are due to an enhancement of the spin-spin correlations induced by a small amount of substitutions. The results are compared with recent Monte Carlo studies on substituted spin ladders, pointing to a similar instability of coupled, dimerized spin chains and spin ladders upon substitution.
