We investigate beyond-mean-field corrections to the energy of a one-dimensional Bose gas confined by a box potential with dipoles aligned along the unconfined direction. When the dipolar interaction reaches its critical strength, the system becomes unstable at the mean-field level. Then, similarly to the free space case, the beyond-mean-field contribution significantly alters the ground state of the system, leading to the formation of a self-bound atomic cloud known as a quantum droplet. Our analysis demonstrates that the beyond-mean-field correction can be understood as an effective three-body repulsion stabilizing the gas, preventing its collapse and leading to a finite-density solution. The quasi-1D dipolar droplets bring into play yet another subtle quantum effect: the effective three-body interactions.

Up until now, a consistent causal theory of point charged particles (for example electrons) interacting with electromagnetic field is not known. The well-known problem is that the standard Lorentz force alone (in the case of point particles) does not lead to a theory in which momentum and energy are conserved. The need of radiation reaction force (or self-force) thus arises. The well known candidate for such force, the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac reaction force, gives non-causal particle behavior, i.e., the particle starts to move before the arrival of external electromagnetic fields. Alternative, causal proposals provide non-physical behavior of the particle -- the particle moves with non-zero acceleration long after any external forces acted on it. Below, we question the existence of a causal theory. We show that for certain electromagnetic pulse of radiation and point particle being initially at rest, there {\it does not exists} a causal particle trajectory, such that the particle ends up moving with constant velocity (when no external electromagnetic fields act on it for very long time). This shows that the proper, causal electrodynamics of point particles does not exist.

We describe a quantum droplet of a Bose-Bose mixture squeezed by an external harmonic forces in one spatial direction. Our approach is based on the self-consistent method formulated in [1]. The true spatial droplet profile in the direction of confinement is accounted for, however local density approximation is assumed in the free directions. We define a numerical approach to find the beyond-mean-field contribution to the chemical potential (Lee-Huang-Yang chemical potential) -- the quantity that determines the droplet's profile. In addition to the numerical approach, we find the Lee-Huang-Yang potential in the analytic form in two limiting cases: a perturbative result for a strong confinement and a semiclassical expression when confinement is very weak.

We define a formalism of a self-consistent description of the ground state of a weakly interacting Bose system, accounting for higher order terms in expansion of energy in the diluteness parameter. The approach is designed to be applied to a Bose-Bose mixture in a regime of weak collapse where quantum fluctuations lead to stabilization of the system and formation of quantum liquid droplets. The approach is based on the Generalized Gross -- Pitaevskii equation accounting for quantum depletion and anomalous density terms. The equation is self-consistently coupled to modified Bogoliubov equations.
The modification we introduce resolves the longstanding issue of missing phonon-branch excitations when higher order terms are included. Our method ensures a gapless phononic low-energy excitation spectrum, crucial to correctly account for quantum fluctuations. We pay particular attention to the case of droplets harmonically confined in some directions. The method allows to determine the Lee-Huang-Yang-type contribution to the chemical potential of inhomogeneous droplets when the local density approximation fails.

Bose-Bose droplets are self-bound objects emerging from a mixture of two interacting Bose-Einstein condensates when their interactions are appropriately tuned. During droplet formation three continuous symmetries of the system's Hamiltonian are broken: translational symmetry and two U1 symmetries, allowing for arbitrary choice of phases of the mean-field wavefunctions describing the two components. Breaking of these symmetries must be accompanied by appearance of zero-energy excitations in the energy spectrum of the system recovering the broken symmetries. Normal modes corresponding to these excitations are the zero-energy modes. Here we find analytic expressions for these modes and introduce Hamitonians generating their time evolution -- dynamics of the droplet's centers of mass as well as dynamics of the phases of the two droplet's wavefunctions. When internal types of excitations (quasiparticles) are neglected then the very complex system of a quantum droplet is described using only few "global" degrees of freedom - the position of the center of mass of the droplet and two phases of two wave-functions, all these being quantum operators. This gives the possibility of describing in a relatively easy way processes of interaction of these quantum droplets, such as collisions.

We study the problem of the stability of a two-component droplet. The standard solution known from the literature is based on a particular form of the mean field energy functional, in particular on distinction of hard mode and soft mode contributions. By imposing the constraint on densities of the two species which minimizes the hard mode energy, the problem is reduced to a stability analysis of a one component system. As opposed to this, we address the issue in full generality. Our analysis is valid for arbitrary forms of energy density. We formulate constraints which correspond to the physically relevant situation of a system which has unconstrained volume and may evaporate particles. For the specific case of a two component Bose-Bose droplet we find approximate analytic solutions and compare them to the standard result. We show that the densities of both components of a stable droplet are limited to a range depending on interaction strength, in contrast to the original unique solution.

At a critical strength of the dipolar interaction the system becomes unstable on the mean field level. We find that the ground state of the gas is strongly influenced by the corrections, leading to formation of a self-bound droplet, in analogy to the free space case. Properties of the droplet state can be found by minimizing the extended Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional. In the limit of strong confinement we show analytically that the correction can be interpreted as an effective three-body repulsion which stabilizes the gas at finite density.

Here, we consider elastic scattering of atoms from elongated clouds taking into account an effective, finite duration of the collision due to the expansion of the condensates. Also, we include the quasicondensate nature of the degenerate quantum gases, due to a finite temperature of the system. We evaluate the pair correlation function measured experimentally in K. V. Kheruntsyan, et. al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 260401 (2012). We show that the finite duration of the collision is an important factor determining the properties of the correlations. Our analytic calculations are in agreement with the measurements. The analytical model we provide, useful for identifying physical processes that influence the correlations, is relevant for experiments with nonclassical pairs of atoms.

When interactions between particles are appropriately tuned, self-bound quantum liquids can be formed. We show that while formation of these droplets in 2D is due to the higher order correction terms contributing to the total energy and originating in quantum fluctuations, in 1D geometry the quantum fluctuations have a negligible role on formation of the self-bound systems. The leading mean-field interactions are then sufficient for droplet formation in 1D. We analyse stability conditions for 2D and 1D systems and predict values of equilibrium densities of droplets.

We study a liquid quantum droplets in a mixture of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates under a variable confinement introduced along one or two spatial dimensions. Despite the atom-atom scattering has a three-dimensional character, discreetness of the available modes in the reduced dimension(s) strongly influences the zero-point energy -- the Lee-Huang-Yang term. In a weakly interaction limit, it is the leading correction to the mean-field energy at the crossover from three to two dimensions, or from three to one dimension. We analyze the properties of the droplets at the dimensional crossovers, and provide the demanding conditions for accessing quasi-low dimensions. We predict new kinds of droplets which are formed only due to the quantum fluctuations when the mean-field interaction vanishes. Our results pave the way for exploring new states of quantum matter, and are important for experiments with liquid quantum droplets in reduced dimensions.

The scattered massive particles, in analogy to photon pairs in quantum optics, might be used in the violation of Bell's inequalities, demonstration of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations, or sub-shot noise atomic interferometry. Usually, a theoretical description of the collision relies either on stochastic numerical methods or on analytical treatments involving various approximations. Here, we investigate elastic scattering of atoms from colliding elongated Bose-Einstein condensates within Bogoliubov method, carefully controlling performed approximations at every stage of the analysis. We derive expressions for the one and two particle correlation functions. The obtained formulas, which relate the correlation functions with condensate wavefunction, are convenient for numerical calculations. We employ variational approach for condensate wavefunctions to obtain analytical expressions for the correlation functions, which properties we analyze in details. We also present a useful semiclassical model of the process, and compare its results with the quantum one. The results are relevant for recent experiments with excited helium atoms, as well as for planned experiments aimed at investigating the nonclassicality of the system.

We investigate the factors that influence the usefulness of supersonic collisions of Bose-Einstein condensates as a potential source of entangled atomic pairs by analyzing the reduction of the number difference fluctuations between regions of opposite momenta. We show that non-monochromaticity of the mother clouds is typically the leading limitation on number squeezing, and that the squeezing becomes less robust to this effect as the density of pairs grows. We develop a simple model that explains the relationship between density correlations and the number squeezing, allows one to estimate the squeezing from properties of the correlation peaks, and shows how the multi-mode nature of the scattering must be taken into account to understand the behavior of the pairing. We analyze the impact of the Bose enhancement on the number squeezing, by introducing a simplified low-gain model. We conclude that as far as squeezing is concerned the preferable configuration occurs when atoms are scattered not uniformly but rather into two well separated regions.

We investigate the atom-optical analog of degenerate four-wave mixing of photons by colliding two Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of metastable helium and measuring the resulting momentum distribution of the scattered atoms with a time and space resolved detector. For the case of photons, phase matching conditions completely define the final state of the system, and in the case of two colliding BECs, simple analogy implies a spherical momentum distribution of scattered atoms. We find, however, that the final momenta of the scattered atoms instead lie on an ellipsoid whose radii are smaller than the initial collision momentum. Numerical and analytical calculations agree well with the measurements, and reveal the interplay between many-body effects, mean-field interaction, and the anisotropy of the source condensate.

We consider a Bose gas with an attractive interaction in a symmetric double well potential. In the Hartree approximation, the ground state solution spontaneously breaks the symmetry of the trapping potential above certain value of the interaction strength. We demonstrate how the Landau-Ginzburg scheme of the second order phase transition emerges from the quantum model and show its link to the spontaneous symmetry breaking mentioned above. We identify the order parameter, the critical point and analyze quantum fluctuations around it.

Here show that this model is capable of generating the data that can be interpreted as results of a single collision event. We find a range of parameters, including relative velocity, population and the size of colliding condensates, where the structure of hallo of scattered atoms in a single realization strongly differs from that averaged over many realizations.

In this paper we treat the behavior of Bose Einstein condensates in double square well potentials, both of equal and different depths. For even depth, symmetry preserving solutions to the relevant nonlinear Schrödinger equation is known, just as in the linear limit. When the nonlinearity is strong enough, symmetry breaking solutions also exist, side by side with the symmetric one. Interestingly, solutions almost entirely localized in one of the wells are known as an extreme case. Here we outline a method for obtaining all these solutions for repulsive interactions. The bifurcation point at which, for critical nonlinearity, the asymmetric solutions branch off from the symmetry preserving ones is found analytically. We also find this bifurcation point and treat the solutions generally via a Josephson Junction model.
When the confining potential is in the form of two wells of different depth, interesting new phenomena appear. This is true of both the occurrence of the bifurcation point for the static solutions, and also of the dynamics of phase and amplitude varying solutions. Again a generalization of the Josephson model proves useful. The stability of solutions is treated briefly.

Here we study the properties of this model in detail, including the nature of the transition from spontaneous to stimulated scattering. Within the first order approximation we derive analytical expressions for the density matrix and anomalous density which provides excellent insight into correlation properties of scattered atoms.

We consider second quantized homogeneous Bose gas in a large cubic box with periodic boundary conditions, at zero temperature. We discuss the energy-momentum spectrum of the Bose gas and its physical significance. We review various rigorous and heuristic results as well as open conjectures about its properties. Our main aim is to convince the readers, including those with mainly mathematical background, that this subject has many interesting problems for rigorous research.
In particular, we investigate the upper bound on the infimum of the energy for a fixed total momentum $\kk$ given by the expectation value of one-particle excitations over a squeezed states. This bound can be viewed as a rigorous version of the famous Bogoliubov method. We show that this approach seems to lead to a (non-physical) energy gap.
The variational problem involving squeezed states can serve as the preparatory step in a perturbative approach that should be useful in computing excitation spectrum. This version of a perturbative approach to the Bose gas seems (at least in principle) superior to the commonly used approach based on the $c$-number substitution.

Mean field approximation treats only coherent aspects of the evolution of a Bose Einstein condensate. However, in many experiments some atoms scatter out of the condensate. We study an analytic model of two counter-propagating atomic Gaussian wavepackets incorporating dynamics of incoherent scattering processes. Within the model we can treat processes of elastic collision of atoms into the initially empty modes, and observe how, with growing occupation, the bosonic enhancement is slowly kicking in. A condition for bosonic enhancement effect is found in terms of relevant parameters. Scattered atoms form a squeezed state that can be viewed as a multi-component condensate. Not only are we able to calculate the dynamics of mode occupation, but also the full statistics of scattered atoms.

Abstract:
We present a model describing the decay of a Bose-Einstein condensate, which assumes the system to remain in thermal equilibrium during the decay. We show that under this assumption transfer of atoms occurs from the condensate to the thermal cloud enhancing the condensate decay rate.
