First design of a crystal-based extraction of 6 GeV electrons for the DESY II Booster Synchrotron
Abstract: A proof-of-principle experimental setup for the extraction of 6 GeV electrons from the DESY II Booster Synchrotron using the channeling effect in a bent crystal is elaborated. Various aspects of the experimental setup were investigated in detail, such as the particle beam dynamics during the extraction process, the manufacturing and characterization of bent crystals, and the detection of the extra… ▽ More

Beam halo and bunch purity monitoring
Abstract: Beam halo measurements imply measurements of beam profiles with a very high dynamic range; in transverse and also longitudinal planes. This lesson gives an overview of high dynamic range instruments for beam halo measurements. In addition halo definitions and quantifications in view of beam instrumentation are discussed.

Diagnostics Examples from Third-Generation Light Sources
Abstract: This lesson discusses many examples of how the signals from the beam monitors are used to diagnose the beam in circular, third-generation synchrotron light sources. During the school, diagnostic examples in other machines (e.g. colliders, CTF3, linacs and free-electron lasers (FEL), and medical accelerators) were given in other lectures. This lesson assumes that the signal generation in the instru… ▽ More

Beam Loss Monitors
Abstract: This lecture covers the fundamental aspects of the measurement of beam losses including their use for beam diagnostic and safety issues. The detailed functionality and detection principle of various common beam loss monitors are also presented, with a focus on their intrinsic sensitivity.

Introduction to Beam Instrumentation and Diagnostics
Abstract: These lectures aim to describe instruments and methods used for measuring beam parameters in particle accelerators. Emphasis will be given to new detection and analysis techniques in each field of accelerator instrumentation. A clear distinction is made between 'instrumentation', the design and construction of the instruments themselves, and 'diagnostics', the use of the data from these instrument… ▽ More

Vibrating wires for beam diagnostics
Abstract: A new approach to the technique of scanning by wires is developed. Novelty of the method is that the wire heating quantity is used as a source of information about the number of interacting particles. To increase the accuracy and sensitivity of measurements the wire heating measurement is regenerated as a change of wire natural oscillations frequency. By the rigid fixing of the wire ends on the ba… ▽ More

Laser Wire Scanner Compton Scattering Techniques for the Measurement of the Transverse Beam Size of Particle Beams at Future Linear Colliders
Abstract: This archive summarizes a working paper and conference proceedings related to laser wire scanner development for the Future Linear Collider (FLC) in the years 2001 to 2006. In particular the design, setup and data taking for the laser wire experiments at PETRA II and CT2 are described. The material is focused on the activities undertaken by Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL).

Twisting wire scanner
Abstract: A new type of 'two-in-one' wire scanner is proposed. Recent advances in linear motors' technology make it possible to combine translational and rotational movements. This will allow to scan the beam in two perpendicular directions using a single driving motor and a special fork attached to it. Vertical or horizontal mounting will help to escape problems associated with the 45 deg scanners. Test re… ▽ More

Dark Current Measurements on a Superconducting Cavity using a Cryogenic Current Comparator
Abstract: This paper presents non-destructive dark current measurements of superconducting TESLA cavities for superconducting LINACs. The measurements were carried out in a highly disturbed accelerator environment using a low temperature superconducting d.c. SQUID based Cryogenic Current Comparator (CCC). The overall current sensitivity under these rough conditions was measured to be 0.2 nA/sqrt(Hz) which e… ▽ More

Beam Profile Measurements and Simulations of the PETRA Laser-Wire
Abstract: The Laser-wire will be an essential diagnostic tool at the International Linear Collider. It uses a finely focussed laser beam to measure the transverse profile of electron bunches by detecting the Compton-scattered photons (or degraded electrons) downstream of where the laser beam intersects the electron beam. Such a system has been installed at the PETRA storage ring at DESY, which uses a piez… ▽ More
