We use Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) clusters with archival X-ray data from XMM-Newton and Chandra to assess the centering performance of the redMaPPer cluster finder and to measure key richness observable scaling relations. In terms of centering, we find that 10-20% of redMaPPer clusters are miscentered with no significant difference in bins of low versus high richness ($20<λ<40$ and $λ>40$) or redshift ($0.2<z<0.4$ and $0.4 <z < 0.65$). We also investigate the richness bias induced by miscentering. The dominant reasons for miscentering include masked or missing data and the presence of other bright galaxies in the cluster; for half of the miscentered clusters the correct central was one of the other possible centrals identified by redMaPPer, while for $\sim 40$% of miscentered clusters the correct central is not a redMaPPer member with most of these cases due to masking. In addition, we fit the scaling relations between X-ray temperature and richness and between X-ray luminosity and richness. We find a T$_X$-$λ$ scatter of $0.21 \pm 0.01$. While the scatter in T$_X$-$λ$ is consistent in bins of redshift, we do find modestly different slopes with high-redshift clusters displaying a somewhat shallower relation. Splitting based on richness, we find a marginally larger scatter for our lowest richness bin, $20 < λ< 40$. The X-ray properties of detected, serendipitous clusters are generally consistent with those for targeted clusters, but the depth of the X-ray data for undetected clusters is insufficient to judge whether they are X-ray underluminous in all but one case.

The vast datasets associated with extrasolar systems promise to offer sensitive probes of new physics in the near future. We consider the possibility that such systems may capture primordial black holes (PBHs) or other exotic compact objects, giving rise to unique observational signatures. We estimate the rate of captures by extrasolar systems, accounting for several distinct mechanisms. We find that the capture rate is negligible unless PBHs account for the entirety of dark matter in a narrow mass range just above the threshold of existing constraints from evaporation. In this scenario, luminous evaporating PBHs may be detectable by exoplanet searches.

We study the capture of light objects of arbitrary velocity by binary systems. Extending results for the capture of comets in the solar system, we develop a simple geometric characterization of the capture cross section, leading directly to the distribution of orbital parameters of captured objects. We use the same framework to study the lifetimes of these bound orbits prior to ejection, and find that a simplified version of the Öpik--Arnold approach readily yields a closed-form estimate for the ejection rate that agrees well with numerical experiments. Without any detailed-balance assumptions, our results make manifest the characteristics of close encounters leading to capture and ejection. As an application of our results, we demonstrate the estimation of the equilibrium population of captured dark matter particles in a binary system.

Being able to image active regions on the Sun's far side is useful for modeling the global-scale magnetic field around the Sun, and for predicting the arrival of major active regions that rotate around the limb onto the near side. Helioseismic methods have already been developed to image the Sun's far-side active regions using near-side high-cadence Doppler-velocity observations; however, the existing methods primarily explore the 3-, 4-, and 5-skip helioseismic waves, leaving room for further improvement in the imaging quality by including waves with more multi-skip waves. Taking advantage of the facts that 6-skip waves have the same target-annuli geometry as 3- and 4-skip waves, and that 8-skip waves have the same target-annuli geometry as 4-skip waves, we further develop a time--distance helioseismic code to include a total of 14 sets of measurement schemes. We then apply the new code on the SDO/HMI-observed Dopplergrams, and find that the new code provides substantial improvements over the existing codes in mapping newly-emerged active regions and active regions near both far-side limbs. Comparing 3 months of far-side helioseismic images with the STEREO/EUVI-observed 304A images, we find that 97.3% of the helioseismically detected far-side active regions that are larger than a certain size correspond to an observed region with strong EUV brightening. The high reliability of the new imaging tool will potentially allow us to further calibrate the far-side helioseismic images into maps of magnetic flux.

Precise knowledge of the location of the material in the LHCb vertex locator (VELO) is essential to reducing background in searches for long-lived exotic particles, and in identifying jets that originate from beauty and charm quarks. Secondary interactions of hadrons produced in beam-gas collisions are used to map the location of material in the VELO. Using this material map, along with properties of a reconstructed secondary vertex and its constituent tracks, a $p$-value can be assigned to the hypothesis that the secondary vertex originates from a material interaction. A validation of this procedure is presented using photon conversions to dimuons.

This determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be $J^{PC}=1^{++}$. The $X(3872)$ is found to decay predominantly through S wave and an upper limit of $4\%$ at $95\%$ C.L. is set on the fraction of D wave.

We have explored modifying the nuclear spin environment in Cr$_7$Ni-based molecular nanomagnets by replacing hydrogen atoms with deuterium or the halogen atoms, fluorine or chlorine. We find that the spin coherence, studied at low temperatures by pulsed electron spin resonance, is modified by a range of factors, including nuclear spin and magnetic moment, changes in dynamics owing to nuclear mass, and molecular morphology changes.

The Vertex Locator (VELO) is a silicon microstrip detector that surrounds the proton-proton interaction region in the LHCb experiment. The performance of the detector during the first years of its physics operation is reviewed. The system is operated in vacuum, uses a bi-phase CO2 cooling system, and the sensors are moved to 7 mm from the LHC beam for physics data taking. The performance and stability of these characteristic features of the detector are described, and details of the material budget are given. The calibration of the timing and the data processing algorithms that are implemented in FPGAs are described. The system performance is fully characterised. The sensors have a signal to noise ratio of approximately 20 and a best hit resolution of 4 microns is achieved at the optimal track angle. The typical detector occupancy for minimum bias events in standard operating conditions in 2011 is around 0.5%, and the detector has less than 1% of faulty strips. The proximity of the detector to the beam means that the inner regions of the n+-on-n sensors have undergone space-charge sign inversion due to radiation damage. The VELO performance parameters that drive the experiment's physics sensitivity are also given. The track finding efficiency of the VELO is typically above 98% and the modules have been aligned to a precision of 1 micron for translations in the plane transverse to the beam. A primary vertex resolution of 13 microns in the transverse plane and 71 microns along the beam axis is achieved for vertices with 25 tracks. An impact parameter resolution of less than 35 microns is achieved for particles with transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c.

The measurements use proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, recorded in the forward region with the LHCb experiment. The relative production rates are observed to depend on the transverse momentum, $p_T$, and pseudorapidity, $η$, of the beauty hadron, in the studied kinematic region $1.5 < p_T < 40$ GeV/$c$ and $2 < η< 5$. Using a previous LHCb measurement of $f_{Λ_b^0}/f_d$ in semileptonic decays, the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^-) = \Big( 4.30 \pm 0.03 \,\, ^{+0.12}_{-0.11} \pm 0.26 \pm 0.21 \Big) \times 10^{-3}$ is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is from the previous LHCb measurement of $f_{Λ_b^0}/f_d$ and the fourth is due to the $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^+ π^-$ branching fraction. This is the most precise measurement of a $Λ_b^0$ branching fraction to date.

The analysis is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector, at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8TeV. The ratio of the branching fraction of the $X(3872)\toψ(2S)γ$ decay to that of the $X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ$ decay is measured to be $$ \frac{Br(X(3872)\rightarrowψ(2S)γ)}{Br(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ)} = 2.46\pm0.64\pm0.29, %\pm0.06,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The measured value agrees with expectations for a pure charmonium interpretation of the $X(3872)$ state and a mixture of charmonium and molecular interpretations. However, it does not support a pure $D\bar{D}^{*}$ molecular interpretation of the $X(3872)$state.

The angular distribution is described by two parameters, $F_{\rm H}$ and the forward-backward asymmetry of the dimuon system $A_{\rm FB}$, which are determined in bins of the dimuon mass squared. The parameter $F_{\rm H}$ is a measure of the contribution from (pseudo)scalar and tensor amplitudes to the decay width. The measurements of $A_{\rm FB}$ and $F_{\rm H}$ reported here are the most precise to date and are compatible with predictions from the Standard Model.

The P-wave amplitudes and phases are measured with a greater precision than by previous experiments, and confirm about equal amounts of longitudinal and transverse polarization. The S-wave $K^+ π^-$ and $K^+K^-$ contributions are taken into account and found to be significant. A comparison of the $B^0 \to φK^*(892)^0$ and $\bar{B}^0 \to φ\bar{K}^*(892)^0$ results shows no evidence for direct CP violation in the rate asymmetry, in the triple-product asymmetries or in the polarization amplitudes and phases.

In this sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, nearly $14\,000$ signal events are reconstructed and selected, containing all possible intermediate resonances with a $K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ final state in the $[1.1, 1.9]\,$GeV/$c^{2}$ mass range. The distribution of the angle of the photon direction with respect to the plane defined by the final-state hadrons in their rest frame is studied in intervals of $K^{\pm}π^{\mp}π^{\pm}$ mass and the asymmetry between the number of signal events found on each side of the plane is obtained. The first direct observation of the photon polarization in the $b \to sγ$ transition is reported with a significance of $5.2\,σ$.

An alternative model including these states and a non-resonant $J/ψπ^+π^-$ component also provides a good description of the data. Based on the different transversity components measured for the spin-2 intermediate states, the final state is found to be compatible with being entirely $CP$-odd. The $CP$-even part is found to be $<2.3$% at 95% confidence level. The $f_0(500)$ state is not observed, allowing a limit to be set on the absolute value of the mixing angle with the $f_0(980)$ of $<7.7^{\circ}$ at 90% confidence level, consistent with a tetraquark interpretation of the $f_0(980)$ substructure.

The lifetime ratio is determined with unprecedented precision to be $0.974\pm0.006\pm0.004$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with original theoretical predictions based on the heavy quark expansion. Using the current world average of the $\overline{B}^0$ lifetime, the $Λ^0_b$ lifetime is found to be $1.479 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.010$ ps.

The analysis is sensitive to the CP-violating CKM phase $γ$ through seven observables: one charge asymmetry in each of the four modes and three ratios of the charge-integrated yields. The results are consistent with measurements of $γ$ using other decay modes.

These represent the most precise lifetime measurements in these decay modes. In addition, ratios of these lifetimes, and the ratio of the decay-width difference, $ΔΓ_d$, to the average width, $Γ_d$, in the $B^0$ system, $ΔΓ_d/Γ_d = -0.044 \pm 0.025 \pm 0.011$, are reported. All quantities are found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations.

In the absence of a signal, upper limits are set on the branching fraction ${\cal{B}}(B^- \to π^+μ^-μ^-)$ as functions of neutrino mass and lifetime. These limits are on the order of $10^{-9}$ for short neutrino lifetimes of 1 ps or less. Limits are also set on the coupling between the muon and a possible fourth-generation neutrino.

The cross-sections times branching fractions to two muons having pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 are measured to be $$\begin{array}{rl} σ_{pp\rightarrow J/ψ\rightarrow{μ^+}{μ^-}}(2.0<η_{μ^\pm }<4.5)=&291\pm 7\pm19 {\rm \ pb},\\ σ_{pp\rightarrowψ(2S)\rightarrow{μ^+}{μ^-}}(2.0<η_{μ^\pm}<4.5)=&6.5\pm 0.9\pm 0.4 {\rm \ pb},\end{array}$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The measurements agree with next-to-leading order QCD predictions as well as with models that include saturation effects.

The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of $1.0\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. Results are shown with two jet transverse momentum thresholds, 10 and 20 GeV, for both the overall cross-section within the fiducial volume, and for six differential cross-section measurements. The fiducial volume requires that both the jet and the muons from the Z boson decay are produced in the forward direction ($2.0<η<4.5$). The results show good agreement with theoretical predictions at the second-order expansion in the coupling of the strong interaction.

A study of indirect CP violation in $D^0$ mesons through the determination of the parameter $A_Γ$ is presented using a data sample of $pp$ collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector and recorded at the centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. The parameter $A_Γ$ is the asymmetry of the effective lifetimes measured in decays of $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ mesons to the CP eigenstates $K^-K^+$ and $π^-π^+$. Fits to the data sample yield $A_Γ(KK)=(-0.35\pm0.62\pm0.12)\times 10^{-3}$ and $A_Γ(ππ)=(0.33\pm1.06\pm0.14)\times 10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results represent the world's best measurements of these quantities. They show no difference in $A_Γ$ between the two final states and no indication of CP violation.

In addition to the inclusive CP asymmetries, larger asymmetries are observed in localized regions of phase space.

Measurements of charm mixing parameters from the decay-time-dependent ratio of D0->K+pi- to D0->K-pi+ rates and the charge-conjugate ratio are reported. The analysis uses data, corresponding to 3 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, from proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV center-of-mass energies recorded by the LHCb experiment. In the limit of charge-parity (CP) symmetry, the mixing parameters are determined to be x'^2=(5.5 +- 4.9)x10^{-5}, y'= (4.8 +- 1.0)x10^{-3}, and R_D=(3.568 +- 0.066)x10^{-3}. Allowing for CP violation, the mixing parameters are determined separately for D0 and D0bar mesons yielding A_D = (-0.7 +- 1.9)%, for the direct CP-violating asymmetry, and 0.75 < |q/p|< 1.24 at the 68.3% confidence level, where q and p are parameters that describe the mass eigenstates of the neutral charm mesons in terms of the flavor eigenstates. This is the most precise determination of these parameters from a single experiment and shows no evidence for CP violation.

The production of $J/ψ$ mesons with rapidity $1.5<y<4.0$ or $-5.0<y<-2.5$ and transverse momentum $p_\mathrm{T}<14 \mathrm{GeV}/c$ is studied with the LHCb detector in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5 \mathrm{TeV}$. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about $1.6 \mathrm{nb}^{-1}$. For the first time the nuclear modification factor and forward-backward production ratio are determined separately for prompt $J/ψ$ mesons and $J/ψ$ from $b$-hadron decays. Clear suppression of prompt $J/ψ$ production with respect to proton-proton collisions at large rapidity is observed, while the production of $J/ψ$ from $b$-hadron decays is less suppressed. These results show good agreement with available theoretical predictions. The measurement shows that cold nuclear matter effects are important for interpretations of the related quark-gluon plasma signatures in heavy-ion collisions.

The branching fraction is measured to be B(B0->J/ψK+K-) = (2.53 +/- 0.31 +/- 0.19)x10^{-6}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. An amplitude analysis of the final state in the B0->J/ψK+K- decay is performed to separate resonant and nonresonant contributions in the K+K- spectrum. Evidence of the a0(980) resonance is reported with statistical significance of 3.9 standard deviations. The corresponding product branching fraction is measured to be B(B0->J/ψa0(980), a0(980)->K+K-)=(4.70 +/- 3.31 +/- 0.72)x10^{-7}, yielding an upper limit of B(B0->J/ψa0(980), a0(980)->K+K-)<9.0x10^{-7} at 90% confidence level. No evidence of the resonant decay B0->J/ψφ\; is found, and an upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be B(B0->J/ψφ)< 1.9x10^{-7} at 90% confidence level.

This is the first observation of a B meson decaying to another B meson via the weak interaction.

The search is carried out with a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1 collected in 2011 by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV. For the K-K+pi-pi+ final state, the four-body phase space is divided into 32 bins, each bin with approximately 1800 decays. The p-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 9.1%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 6.5% observed. The phase space of the pi-pi+pi+pi- final state is partitioned into 128 bins, each bin with approximately 2500 decays. The $p$-value under the hypothesis of no CP violation is 41%, and in no bin is a CP asymmetry greater than 5.5% observed. All results are consistent with the hypothesis of no CP violation at the current sensitivity.

The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb$^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7TeV. Four observables are measured in six bins of the dimuon invariant mass squared, $q^2$, in the range $0.1<q^2<19.0$GeV$^{2}$/c$^{4}$. Agreement with Standard Model predictions is found for 23 of the 24 measurements. A local discrepancy, corresponding to $3.7$ Gaussian standard deviations, is observed in one $q^2$ bin for one of the observables. Considering the 24 measurements as independent, the probability to observe such a discrepancy, or larger, in one is $0.5\%$.

Averaged over all the bins, the $C¶$ asymmetry is found to be ${{\cal A}_{C¶} = 0.000\pm 0.033{(stat.)} \pm0.005 {(syst.)} \pm 0.007{}(J/ψK^+)}$, where the third uncertainty is due to the $C¶$ asymmetry of the control mode. This is consistent with the Standard Model prediction.

Around 1.8x10^6 candidate events are selected of the type $B^0_{(s)} \to D^-_{(s)} μ^+$ (+ anything), where about half are from peaking and combinatorial backgrounds. To determine the B decay times, a correction is required for the momentum carried by missing particles, which is performed using a simulation-based statistical method. Associated production of muons or mesons allows us to tag the initial-state flavour and so to resolve oscillations due to mixing. We obtain Δm_s = (17.93 \pm 0.22 (stat) \pm 0.15 (syst)) ps^{-1}, Δm_d = (0.503 \pm 0.011 (stat) \pm 0.013 (syst)) ps^{-1}. The hypothesis of no oscillations is rejected by the equivalent of 5.8 standard deviations for $B^0_s$ and 13.0 standard deviations for $B^0$. This is the first observation of $B^0_s$ mixing to be made using only semileptonic decays.
