We investigate the energy-energy correlator (EEC) of hadrons produced on the same side in $e^+e^-$ annihilation or in leading jets in $pp$ collisions. We observe a remarkable universality of the correlator. Using a non-perturbative transverse momentum dependent (TMD) fragmentation function to model the transition from the ``free-hadron" region to the perturbative collinear region, we are able to describe the near-side shapes and peaks over a wide range of energy for both the $e^+e^-$ annihilation and the $pp$ jet substructure measurements in terms of just two parameters. We present further predictions for the ratio of the projected three-point energy correlator to the EEC. The excellent agreement between our calculations and the experimental data may provide new insights into the role of non-perturbative physics for EECs, and suggests the possibility of exploring non-perturbative TMDs using theoretical tools developed for the energy correlators.

We analyze the data using QCD perturbation theory at NNLO accuracy, employing approximations provided by the threshold resummation formalism in cases where full NNLO results for partonic hard-scattering functions are not readily available. Our numerical results suggest a remarkable perturbative stability of the extracted helicity PDFs.

We consider unpolarized collisions as well as scattering of longitudinally polarized incident electrons and protons. We show that the cross sections are sensitive to the parton distribution functions of photons inside the proton, which we find to generate the dominant contributions in certain kinematical regions at the EIC. Using collinear factorization, we work at the first order in QCD perturbation theory where these contributions appear, ${\cal O}(α_s^2)$, and address both $W^\pm$ and $γ/Z^0$ boson exchange. A major focus of our calculation is on the regime where the boson's transverse momentum $Q_T$ is much smaller than its mass $Q$. We carefully expand our results up to next-to-next-to-leading power in $Q_T/Q$. Our calculation provides a benchmark for studies of $T$-odd contributions that employ transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions. In the neutral-current case we compare our results for the $T$-odd structure functions to available ATLAS data.

We extend the discussion of the recently discovered 'anomaly poles' in QCD Compton scattering. We perform the complete one-loop calculation of the Compton amplitude using momentum transfer $t$ as the regulator of collinear divergences. In the gluon channel, we confirm the presence of poles $1/t$ in both the real and imaginary parts of the amplitude. In the quark channel, we find unexpected infrared single $1/ε$ and double $1/ε^2$ poles. We then perform the one-loop calculation of the leading-twist quark generalized parton distributions (GPDs) for quark and gluon external states with the same regulators and find that all these singular terms can be systematically absorbed into the GPDs, showing that QCD factorization is restored to this order. Having established this, we discuss the fate of the $1/t$ poles. We argue that they become the nonperturbative building blocks of GPDs that encode the chiral and trace anomalies of QCD, in a way consistent with the known constraints these anomalies impose on the nucleon axial and gravitational form factors. The scope of research on GPDs can therefore be expanded to address the manifestation and implications of quantum anomalies in high-energy exclusive processes.

This White Paper presents the community inputs and scientific conclusions from the Hot and Cold QCD Town Meeting that took place September 23-25, 2022 at MIT, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 424 physicists registered for the meeting. The meeting highlighted progress in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) nuclear physics since the 2015 LRP (LRP15) and identified key questions and plausible paths to obtaining answers to those questions, defining priorities for our research over the coming decade. In defining the priority of outstanding physics opportunities for the future, both prospects for the short (~ 5 years) and longer term (5-10 years and beyond) are identified together with the facilities, personnel and other resources needed to maximize the discovery potential and maintain United States leadership in QCD physics worldwide. This White Paper is organized as follows: In the Executive Summary, we detail the Recommendations and Initiatives that were presented and discussed at the Town Meeting, and their supporting rationales. Section 2 highlights major progress and accomplishments of the past seven years. It is followed, in Section 3, by an overview of the physics opportunities for the immediate future, and in relation with the next QCD frontier: the EIC. Section 4 provides an overview of the physics motivations and goals associated with the EIC. Section 5 is devoted to the workforce development and support of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is followed by a dedicated section on computing in Section 6. Section 7 describes the national need for nuclear data science and the relevance to QCD research.

We show that inclusive single-spin asymmetries (SSAs) with transversely polarized protons or electrons at a future electron ion collider (EIC) are sensitive to new physics contributions to electroweak dipole operators of electrons and quarks. We use the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) to parameterize possible heavy new physics contributions to these couplings. We show that new physics scales at or beyond the TeV-scale can be probed assuming realistic EIC run parameters, and that the transverse spin asymmetries are sensitive to different combinations of the dipole couplings than other measurements such as anomalous magnetic or electric dipole moments. We also study the physics potential of SSAs at a possible future upgrade of the EIC to collide muons and protons. Measurements at such an upgrade could probe the same SMEFT parameters that explain the current anomaly in the muon anomalous magnetic moment, and could also improve current bounds on the muon electric dipole moment.

Inspired by recent work by Tarasov and Venugopalan, we calculate the one-loop quark box diagrams relevant to polarized and unpolarized Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) by introducing off-forward momentum $l^μ$ as an infrared regulator. In the polarized case, we rederive the pole $1/l^2$ related to the axial (chiral) anomaly. In addition, we obtain the usual logarithmic term and the DIS coefficient function. We interpret the result in terms of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) $\tilde{H}$ and $\tilde{E}$ and discuss the possible violation of QCD factorization for the Compton scattering amplitude. Remarkably, we also find poles in the unpolarized case which are remnants of the trace anomaly. We argue that these poles are cancelled by the would-be massless glueball poles in the GPDs $H$ and $E$ as well as in their moments, the nucleon gravitational form factors $A,B$ and $D$. This mechanism sheds light on the connection between the gravitational form factors and the gluon condensate operator $F^{μν}F_{μν}$.

We study the power corrections for electroweak boson production that are implied by threshold resummation, which we have extended to massive particles produced at measured transverse momentum, $p_T$, and rapidity. Power corrections in the resulting expressions arise from ambiguities in the low-scale behavior of the perturbative running coupling. Arguing for the relevance of the eikonal approximation, we show that such power corrections begin at order $1/p_T^2$ in full QCD, consistent with fixed-order, massive-gluon analysis. For large-$N$ Mellin moments, the leading behavior is $N^2/p_T^2$, which exponentiates along with the logarithms of threshold resummation.

In addition to older fixed-target deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan (DY) dilepton production data, several analyses from p+Pb collisions at the LHC provide further constraints and extend the kinematic reach of applicable data. Here we present an update of our previous TUJU19 analysis where we now include also electroweak-boson production data recently measured by ATLAS and CMS. For the first time, LHC data are included in a nPDF analysis performed at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. As before, our setup is based on the open-source analysis framework xFitter and we fit our own proton baseline, ensuring a fully consistent setup. We find good agreement with the applied data and that the resulting $χ^2/N_{\mathrm{df}}$ is significantly smaller in case of the NNLO analysis (0.84) compared to our NLO analysis (0.94). Also, we present comparisons between our NNLO calculations and electroweak-boson production data in Pb+Pb collisions from ATLAS and CMS and DY data recently measured by CMS where NNLO corrections are found significant.

We study factorization in single transverse spin asymmetries for dijet production in proton-proton collisions, by considering soft gluon radiation at one-loop order. We show that the associated transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization is valid at the leading logarithmic level. At next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy, however, we find that soft gluon radiation generates terms in the single transverse spin dependent cross section that differ from those known for the unpolarized case. As a consequence, these terms cannot be organized in terms of a spin independent soft factor in the factorization formula. We present leading logarithmic predictions for the single transverse spin dijet asymmetry for $pp$ collisions at RHIC, based on quark Sivers functions constrained by semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data. We hope that our results will contribute to a better understanding of TMD factorization breaking effects at NLL accuracy and beyond.

These proceedings are organized by chapters, corresponding to the weeks of the program: Week I, Generalized parton distributions; Week II, Transverse spin and TMDs; Week III, Longitudinal spin; Week IV, Symposium week; Weeks V & VI, eA collisions; Week VII, pA and AA collisions. We hope these proceedings will be useful to readers as a compilation of EIC-related science at the end of the second decade of the XXI century.

We consider the longitudinal momentum distribution of hadrons inside jets in proton-proton collisions. At partonic threshold large double logarithmic corrections arise which need to be resummed to all orders. We develop a factorization formalism within SCET that allows for the joint resummation of threshold and jet radius logarithms. We achieve next-to-leading logarithmic NLL$'$ accuracy by including non-global logarithms in the leading-color approximation. Overall, we find that the threshold resummation leads to a sizable enhancement of the cross section and a reduced QCD scale dependence, suggesting that the all-order resummation can be important for the reliable extraction of fragmentation functions in global analyses when jet substructure data is included.

The results of this QCD analysis are compared to the existing nPDF sets and to the fitted data. The presented framework is based on an open-source tool, xFitter, which has been modified to be applicable also for a nuclear PDF analysis. The required modifications are covered as well. We implement a Monte Carlo sampling strategy to extract helicity parton densities and their uncertainties from a reference set of longitudinally polarized scattering data, chosen to be that used in the DSSV14 global analysis. Instead of adopting the simplest possible functional forms for the helicity parton distributions and imposing certain restrictions on their parameter space in order to constrain them, we employ redundant, flexible parametrizations and fit them to a large number of Monte Carlo replicas of the existing data. The optimum fit and its uncertainty estimates are then assumed to be given by the statistical average of the obtained ensemble of replicas of helicity parton densities and their corresponding variance, respectively. We compare our results to those obtained by the traditional fitting approach and to the uncertainty estimates derived with the robust Lagrange multiplier method, finding good agreement. As a first application of our new set of replicas, we discuss the impact of the recent STAR dijet data in further constraining the elusive gluon helicity density through the reweighting method.

We revisit the scale evolution of the quark and gluon spin contributions to the proton spin, $\frac{1}{2}ΔΣ$ and $ΔG$, using the three-loop results for the spin-dependent evolution kernels available in the literature. We argue that the evolution of the quark spin contribution may actually be extended to four-loop order, and that to all orders a single anomalous dimension governs the evolution of both $ΔΣ$ and $ΔG$. We present analytical solutions of the evolution equations for $ΔΣ$ and $ΔG$ and investigate their scale dependence both to large and down to lower "hadronic" scales. We find that the solutions remain perturbatively stable even to low scales, where they come closer to simple quark model expectations. We discuss a curious scenario for the proton spin, in which even the gluon spin contribution is essentially scale independent and has a finite asymptotic value as the scale becomes large. We finally also show that perturbative three-loop evolution leads to a larger spin contribution of strange anti-quarks than of strange quarks.

We study the Drell-Yan cross section differential with respect to the transverse momentum of the produced lepton pair. We consider data with moderate invariant mass Q of the lepton pair, between 4.5 GeV and 13.5 GeV, and similar (although slightly smaller) values of the transverse momentum q_T. We approach the problem by deriving predictions based on standard collinear factorization, which are expected to be valid toward the high-q_T end of the spectrum and to which any description of the spectrum at lower q_T using transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions ultimately needs to be matched. We find that the collinear framework predicts cross sections that in most cases are significantly below available data at high q_T. We discuss additional perturbative and possible non-perturbative effects that increase the predicted cross section, but not by a sufficient amount.

The azimuthal angular correlation between the final state lepton and jet depends on the transverse momentum dependent quark distributions. We take the example of single transverse spin asymmetries to show the sensitivity to the quark Sivers function. When the correlation is studied in lepton-nucleus collisions, transverse momentum broadening effects can be used to explore cold nuclear matter effects. These features make lepton-jet correlations an important new hard probe at the EIC.

We develop threshold resummation for single-particle inclusive cross sections in hadron-hadron collisions to the level of next-to-next-to-leading logarithm, up to full matching with two-loop hard functions. We define and calculate all one-loop soft functions for all partonic channels. This enables us to separate the hard and soft functions at one loop. Along with these results, the one-loop finite parts of jet functions are used to check that the full soft, collinear and virtual corrections are reproduced to one loop for all partonic reactions. We exhibit these NLO results explicitly. NLO expansions of the resummed cross section match the exact NLO results extremely well numerically, and two loop expansions result in substantial corrections over many kinematic configurations. Explicit results are given in Mellin moment space, and a number of options for generating resummed cross sections are discussed.

In the framework of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), parton distribution functions (PDFs) quantify how the momentum and spin of a hadron are divided among its quark and gluon constituents. Two main approaches exist to determine PDFs. The first approach, based on QCD factorization theorems, realizes a QCD analysis of a suitable set of hard-scattering measurements, often using a variety of hadronic observables. The second approach, based on first-principle operator definitions of PDFs, uses lattice QCD to compute directly some PDF-related quantities, such as their moments. Motivated by recent progress in both approaches, in this document we present an overview of lattice-QCD and global-analysis techniques used to determine unpolarized and polarized proton PDFs and their moments. We provide benchmark numbers to validate present and future lattice-QCD calculations and we illustrate how they could be used to reduce the PDF uncertainties in current unpolarized and polarized global analyses. This document represents a first step towards establishing a common language between the two communities, to foster dialogue and to further improve our knowledge of PDFs.

We briefly summarize the main theoretical concepts on which the currently available extractions of these fragmentation functions rely: evolution and the vector meson dominance model. We present comparisons of the available sets. We argue that the single-inclusive photon production process $pp\toγX$ possesses only little sensitivity to the fragmentation contribution. Instead, the semi-inclusive process $pp\to(\text{jet}\,γ)X$, for which the photon is observed inside a fully reconstructed jet and is part of the jet, is shown to offer much potential for providing valuable new information.

We present a comprehensive comparison of the available experimental data for the Drell-Yan lepton angular coefficients $λ$ and $ν$ to calculations at leading and next-to-leading order of perturbative QCD. To obtain the next-to-leading order corrections, we make use of publicly available numerical codes that allow us to compute the Drell-Yan cross section at second order in perturbation theory and from which the contributions we need can be extracted. Our comparisons reveal that perturbative QCD is able to describe the experimental data overall rather well, especially at colliders, but also in the fixed-target regime. On the basis of the angular coefficients alone, there appears to be little (if any) convincing evidence for effects that go beyond fixed-order collinear factorized perturbation theory, although the presence of such effects is not ruled out.

The exploration of the fundamental structure of strongly interacting matter has always thrived on the complementarity of lepton scattering and purely hadronic probes. As the community eagerly anticipates a future electron ion collider (EIC) in the U.S., an outstanding scientific opportunity remains to complete "must-do" measurements in p+p and p+A physics in the years preceding the EIC. As we describe in this document, these measurements will be essential to fully realize the scientific promise of the EIC by provid-ing a comprehensive set of measurements in hadronic collisions that, when combined with data from the EIC, will establish the validity and limits of factorization and universality. The outlined program will on the one hand lay the groundwork for the EIC, both scientifically and in terms of refining the experimental requirements for the physics program at the EIC, and thus be the natural next step on the path towards an electron-ion collider. On the other hand, while much of the physics in this program is unique to proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions and offers discovery potential on its own, when combined with data from the EIC it will provide a broad foundation to a deeper understanding of fundamental QCD.

Taking into account the non-trivial color structure of the partonic hard-scattering process, we determine the hard and soft matrices in color space. In our numerical studies we find a significant improvement compared to previous results at NLL accuracy. In particular, the scale dependence of the resummed cross section is greatly reduced. In addition, we comment on the extension of the techniques developed in this work to other observables relevant for hadronic collisions.

The main feature of these processes is that the scattered lepton is not observed, so that the hard scale that makes them perturbative is set by the transverse momentum of the hadron or jet. Kinematically, the two processes thus become direct analogs of single-inclusive production in hadronic collisions which, as has been pointed out in the literature, makes them promising tools for exploring transverse spin phenomena in QCD when the incident nucleon is transversely polarized. We find that the NLO corrections are sizable for the spin-averaged cross section. We present an analytic next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the partonic cross sections for single-inclusive lepton production in hadronic collisions, when the lepton originates from the decay of an intermediate electroweak boson and is produced at high transverse momentum. In particular, we consider the case of incoming longitudinally polarized protons for which parity-violating single-spin asymmetries arise that are exploited in the $W$ boson program at RHIC to constrain the proton's helicity parton distributions. Our calculation enables a very fast and efficient numerical computation of the relevant spin asymmetries at RHIC, which is an important ingredient for the inclusion of RHIC data in a global analysis of nucleon helicity structure. We confirm the validity of our calculation by comparing with an existing code that treats the next-to-leading order cross sections entirely numerically by Monte-Carlo integration techniques. We also provide new comparisons of the present RHIC data with results for some of the sets of polarized parton distributions available in the literature.

Time and again, spin has been a key element in the exploration of fundamental physics. Spin-dependent observables have often revealed deficits in the assumed theoretical framework and have led to novel developments and concepts. Spin is exploited in many parity-violating experiments searching for physics beyond the Standard Model or studying the nature of nucleon-nucleon forces. The RHIC spin program plays a special role in this grand scheme: it uses spin to study how a complex many-body system such as the proton arises from the dynamics of QCD. Many exciting results from RHIC spin have emerged to date, most of them from RHIC running after the 2007 Long Range Plan. In this document we present highlights from the RHIC program to date and lay out the roadmap for the significant advances that are possible with future RHIC running.

We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation for the single-inclusive production of collimated jets at hadron colliders, when the jet is defined by maximizing a suitable jet function that depends on the momenta of final-state particles in the event. A jet algorithm of this type was initially proposed by Georgi and subsequently further developed into the class of "$J_{E_T}$ algorithms". Our calculation establishes the infrared safety of the algorithms at this perturbative order. We derive analytical results for the relevant partonic cross sections. We discuss similarities and differences with respect to jets defined by cone or (anti-)$k_t$ algorithms and present numerical results for the Tevatron and the LHC.

We investigate QCD threshold resummation effects beyond the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order for the process H1 H2->h1 h2 X at high invariant mass of the produced hadron pair. We take into account the color structure of the underlying partonic hard-scattering cross sections and determine the relevant hard and soft matrices in color space that contribute to the resummed cross section at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We present numerical results for fixed-target and collider regimes. We find a significant improvement compared to previous results at NLL accuracy. In particular, the scale dependence of the resummed cross section is greatly reduced. Use of the most recent set of fragmentation functions also helps in improving the comparison with the experimental data. Our calculation provides a step towards a systematic NNLL extension of threshold resummation also for other hadronic processes, in particular for jet production.

During this meeting at Jefferson Lab we addressed recent theoretical and experimental developments in the spin and the three--dimensional structure of the nucleon (sea quark and gluon spatial distributions, orbital motion, polarization, and their correlations). This mini--review contains a short update on progress in these areas since the EIC White paper~\cite{Accardi:2012qut}.

We find clear evidence for a non-vanishing polarization of gluons in the region of momentum fraction and at the scales mostly probed by the data. Although information from low momentum fractions is presently lacking, this finding is suggestive of a significant contribution of gluon spin to the proton spin, thereby limiting the amount of orbital angular momentum required to balance the proton spin budget.

We determine dominant next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to single-inclusive jet production at the LHC and Tevatron, using the established threshold resummation framework. In contrast to previous literature on this topic, our study incorporates all of the following features: (1) It properly accounts for the way a jet is defined in experiment and treated in available full next-to-leading order calculations, (2) It includes the three leading classes of logarithmic terms in the perturbative expansion, and (3) It is adapted to the full kinematics in jet transverse momentum and rapidity relevant for experiments. A recent full next-to-next-to-leading order calculation in the purely gluonic channel allows us to assess the region where our approximate corrections provide an accurate description. We expect our results to be important on the way to precision jet phenomenology at the LHC and as benchmark for further full next-to-next-to-leading order calculations.
