We investigate the effect on cosmological evolution of a strongly coupled quantum field that undergoes renormalization group flow from a UV CFT to an IR CFT. The field theory is defined by perturbation of a holographic CFT by a relevant operator associated with a bulk scalar field that evolves from a local maximum of its potential near the boundary to a local minimum of its potential deep in the bulk. By studying the gravity solutions dual to this theory on $\mathbb{R}^3 \times S^1$, we find that the equation of state parameter $w$ for the field theory has the conformal behavior $w=1/3$ for high and low temperatures, but dips to lower values for intermediate temperatures. Thus, at scales where the field theory has significant scale-dependence, its effect on cosmological evolution is intermediate between matter and radiation. Compared to the unperturbed UV CFT (which acts as radiation), the energy density experiences less dilution during the expansion as a result of the RG flow, and the rate of expansion is greater.

Negative lambda gravitational effective field theories dual to holographic CFTs have potentially realistic cosmological solutions. Generic cosmological solutions of these effective field theories have scalar field evolution that can lead to a period of accelerated expansion when the scalar field is at positive values of its potential (Fig. 1). If such a model describes our universe, significant evolution of dark energy is expected over a Hubble time as the scalar descends from positive to negative values of its potential towards the AdS extremum. Our recent observational study 2305.04946 based on supernova and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) observations suggests that significant evolution of dark energy associated with a descending scalar field may be preferred by data (Fig. 2). Taking a linear approximation to the scalar potential around the present value, a standard likelihood analysis gives an $e^{- χ^2/2}$ distribution in which $dV/dt$ is presently negative in $99.99 \%$ of the distribution, with a mean fractional variation of the potential of $36 \%$ over the period $z \lessapprox 2$ over which supernova data is available. In this note, we review these theoretical and observational results and provide an update on the question of how the physics of these cosmological solutions can be related to the physics of the underlying CFT.

For a quantum system with Hilbert space ${\cal H}$ of dimension $N$ and a set $S$ of $n$ Hermitian operators ${\cal O}_i$, a basic question is to understand the set $E_S \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ of points $\vec{e}$ where $e_i = {\rm tr}(ρ{\cal O}_i)$ for an allowed state $ρ$. A related question is to determine whether a given set of expectation values $\vec{e}$ lies in $E_S$ and in this case to describe the most general state with these expectation values. In this paper, we describe various ways to characterize $E_S$, reviewing basic results that are perhaps not widely known and adding new ones. One important result (originally due to E. Wichmann) is that for a set $S$ of linearly independent traceless operators, every set of expectation values $\vec{e}$ in the interior of $E_S$ is achieved uniquely by a state of the form $ρ({\vecβ}) = e^{-\sum_i β_i {\cal O}_i}/{\rm tr}(e^{-\sum_i β_i {\cal O}_i})$ for ${\cal O}_i \in S$. In fact, the map $\vecβ \to \vec{E}(\vecβ) = {\rm tr}(\vec{\cal O} ρ({\vecβ}))$ is a diffeomorphism from $\mathbb{R}^n$ to the interior of $E_S$ with symmetric, positive Jacobian; using this fact, we provide an algorithm to invert $\vec{E}(\vecβ)$ and thus determine a state $ρ({\vecβ(\vec{e})})$ with specified expectation values $\vec{e}$ provided that these lie in $E_S$. The algorithm is based on defining a first order differential equation in the space of parameters $\vecβ$ that is guaranteed to converge to $\vecβ(\vec{e})$ in a precise way, with $|\vec{E}(\vecβ(t)) - \vec{e}| = C e^{-t}$.

Gravitational effective theories associated with holographic CFTs have cosmological solutions, which are typically big-bang / big-crunch cosmologies. These solutions are not asymptotically AdS, so they are not dual to finite-energy states of the CFT. However, we can find solutions with arbitrarily large spherical bubbles of such cosmologies embedded in asymptotically AdS spacetimes where the exterior of the bubble is Schwarzschild-AdS. In this paper, we explore such solutions and their possible CFT dual descriptions. Starting with a cosmological solution with $Λ< 0$ plus arbitrary matter density, radiation density, and spatial curvature, we show that a comoving bubble of arbitrary size can be embedded in a geometry with AdS-Schwarzschild exterior across a thin-shell domain wall comprised of pressureless matter. We show that in most cases (in particular, for arbitrarily large bubbles with an arbitrarily small negative spatial curvature) the entropy of the black hole exceeds the (radiation) entropy in the cosmological bubble, suggesting that a faithful CFT description is possible. We show that unlike the case of a de Sitter bubble, the Euclidean continuation of these cosmological solutions is sensible and suggests a specific construction of CFT states dual to the cosmological solutions via Euclidean path integral.

The potential energy from a time-dependent scalar field provides a possible explanation for the observed cosmic acceleration. In this paper, we investigate how data from supernova and bary acoustic oscillation surveys constrain the possible evolution of a single scalar field over the period of time (roughly half the age of the universe) for which these data are available. Taking a linear approximation to the scalar potential $V(φ) = V_0 + V_1 φ$ around the present value, a likelihood analysis appears to significantly prefer models with a decreasing potential energy at present, with approximately $99.99 \%$ of the $\exp(-χ^2/2)$ distribution having $V_1 > 0$ in a convention where $\dotφ \le 0$ at present. The models favoured by the distribution typically have an order one decrease $\langle |{\rm Range}[V(φ(t))] / V(t_0)| \rangle \approx 0.36$ in the scalar potential energy over the time frame corresponding to $z < 2$. According to the likelihood analysis, the $Λ$CDM model with no variation in dark energy appears to be significantly disfavoured in the context of the linear potential model, but this should be interpreted cautiously since model selection criteria that make use of $Δχ^2$ while ignoring parameter space volumes still favour $Λ$CDM. Working with a second order approximation to the potential, the supernova data can be fit well for a wide range of possible potentials, including models where the universe has already stopped accelerating.

Motivated by traversable wormhole constructions that require large amounts of negative energy, we explore constraints on the amount of negative energy that can be carried by a free Dirac field in a slab-shaped region between two parallel spatial planes. Specifically, we ask what is the minimum possible uniform energy density that can exist at some time, considering all possible states and all possibilities for the physics outside the slab. The vacuum state where we identify the two sides of the slab with antiperiodic boundary conditions gives one possible state with uniform negative energy, but we argue that states with more negative energy exist above 1+1 dimensions. Technically, we reduce the problem to studying a massive Dirac field on an interval in 1+1 dimensions and numerically search for states with uniform energy density in a lattice regulated model. We succeed in finding states with enhanced negative energy (relative to the antiperiodic vacuum) which also appear to have a sensible continuum limit. Our results for the mass-dependence of the minimum uniform energy density in 1+1 dimensions suggest that for a 3+1 dimensional massless Dirac fermion, it is possible to have states with arbitrarily large uniform negative energy density in an arbitrarily wide slab.

We argue that these models generically have time-dependent scalar fields, and these can lead to realistic cosmologies at the level of the homogeneous background geometry, with an accelerating phase prior to the turnaround and crunch. We first demonstrate via explicit effective field theory examples that models with an asymptotically AdS Euclidean continuation can also exhibit a period of accelerated expansion without fine tuning. We then show that certain significantly more tuned examples can give predictions arbitrarily close to a $Λ$CDM model. Finally, we demonstrate via an explicit construction that the potentials of interest can arise from a superpotential, thus suggesting that these solutions may be compatible with an underlying supersymmetric theory.

Time-dependent scalar fields provide a candidate explanation for the dark energy. For these to vary on cosmological time scales, the derivative of the scalar potential in Planck units should have roughly the same magnitude as the potential itself. We emphasize that scalars with this property are present in any four-dimensional gravitational effective theory with a known UV completion via holography, provided that the dual CFT has scalar operators with dimensions of order one. Cosmological solutions without time-dependent scalars are analogous to solutions dual to the vacuum states of such CFTs while solutions with time-dependent scalars are analogous to solutions dual to the vacuum state of quantum field theories with RG flow where these CFTs provide the UV or IR fixed point. If time-dependent scalars do explain the dark energy, the gravitational effective theory describing our universe could be a $Λ< 0$ model associated to a holographic CFT.

In recent works (arXiv: 2102.05057, 2203.11220) it was suggested that such wormhole geometries may be dual to a pair of 3D holographic CFTs coupled via auxiliary degrees of freedom to give a theory that confines in the infrared. In this paper, we explore signatures of the presence of such a wormhole in the state of the coupled pair of 3D theories. We explain how the wormhole geometry is reflected in the spectrum of the confining theory and the behavior of two-point functions and entanglement entropies. We provide explicit algorithms to reconstruct the wormhole scale factor (which uniquely determines its geometry) from entanglement entropies, heavy operator two-point functions, or light operator two-point functions (which contain the spectrum information). In the last case, the physics of the bulk scalar field dual to the light operator is closely related to the quantum mechanics of a one-dimensional particle in a potential derived from the scale factor, and the problem of reconstructing the scale factor from the two-point function is directly related to the problem of reconstructing this Schrödinger potential from its spectrum.

We argue that standard tools of holography can be used to describe fully non-perturbative microscopic models of cosmology in which a period of accelerated expansion may result from the positive potential energy of time-dependent scalar fields evolving towards a region with negative potential. In these models, the fundamental cosmological constant is negative, and the universe eventually recollapses in a time-reversal symmetric way. The microscopic description naturally selects a special state for the cosmology. In this framework, physics in the cosmological spacetime is dual to the vacuum physics in a static planar asymptotically AdS Lorentzian wormhole spacetime, in the sense that the background spacetimes and observables are related by analytic continuation. The dual spacetime is weakly curved everywhere, so any cosmological observables can be computed in the dual picture via effective field theory without detailed knowledge of the UV completion or the physics near the big bang. In particular, while inflation may explain the origin of perturbations in the cosmology picture, the perturbations can be deduced from the dual picture without any knowledge of the inflationary potential.

We study the vacuum energy density in each CFT as a function of the central charges, the thickness of the layer(s), and the properties of the interfaces between the CFTs. The dual spacetimes in the holographic model include two regions separated by a dynamical interface with some tension. For two or more spatial dimensions, we find that a layer of CFT with more degrees of freedom than the surrounding one can have an anomalously large negative vacuum energy density for certain types of interfaces. The negative energy density (or null-energy density in the direction perpendicular to the interface) becomes arbitrarily large for fixed layer width when the tension of the bulk interface approaches a lower critical value. We argue that in cases where we have large negative energy density, we also have an anomalously high transition temperature to the high-temperature thermal state.

We describe a class of holographic models that may describe the physics of certain four-dimensional big-bang / big-crunch cosmologies. The construction involves a pair of 3D Euclidean holographic CFTs each on a homogeneous and isotropic space $M$ coupled at either end of an interval ${\cal I}$ to a Euclidean 4D CFT on $M \times {\cal I}$ with many fewer local degrees of freedom. We argue that in some cases, when the size of $M$ is much greater than the length of ${\cal I}$, the theory flows to a gapped / confining three-dimensional field theory on $M$ in the infrared, and this is reflected in the dual description by the asymptotically AdS spacetimes dual to the two 3D CFTs joining up in the IR to give a Euclidean wormhole. The Euclidean construction can be reinterpreted as generating a state of Lorentzian 4D CFT on $M \times {\rm time}$ whose dual includes the physics of a big-bang / big-crunch cosmology. When $M$ is $\mathbb{R}^3$, we can alternatively analytically continue one of the $\mathbb{R}^3$ directions to get an eternally traversable four-dimensional planar wormhole. We suggest explicit microscopic examples where the 4D CFT is ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory and the 3D CFTs are superconformal field theories with opposite orientation. In this case, the two geometries dual to the pair of 3D SCFTs can be understood as a geometrical version of a brane-antibrane pair, and the tendency of the geometries to connect up is related to the standard instability of brane-antibrane systems.

We first perform the calculation holographically by evaluating the entanglement entropy for a half-ball centered on the boundary using the Ryu-Takayanagi formula in the dual type IIB supergravity solutions. For boundary conditions associated with D3-branes ending on D5 branes only or NS5-branes only, we also calculate boundary $F$ exactly by evaluating the hemisphere partition function using supersymmetric localization. The leading term at large $N$ in the supergravity and localization results agree exactly as a function of the t' Hooft coupling $λ$.

Certain closed-universe big-bang/big-crunch cosmological spacetimes may be obtained by analytic continuation from asymptotically AdS Euclidean wormholes, as emphasized by Maldacena and Maoz. We investigate how these Euclidean wormhole spacetimes and their associated cosmological physics might be described within the context of AdS/CFT. We point out that a holographic model for cosmology proposed recently in arXiv:1810.10601 can be understood as a specific example of this picture. Based on this example, we suggest key features that should be present in more general examples of this approach to cosmology. The basic picture is that we start with two non-interacting copies of a Euclidean holographic CFT associated with the asymptotic regions of the Euclidean wormhole and couple these to auxiliary degrees of freedom such that the original theories interact strongly in the IR but softly in the UV. The partition function for the full theory with the auxiliary degrees of freedom can be viewed as a product of partition functions for the original theories averaged over an ensemble of possible sources. The Lorentzian cosmological spacetime is encoded in a wavefunction of the universe that lives in the Hilbert space of the auxiliary degrees of freedom.

Our CFT$_2$ states are "dressed up as" states of CFT$_1$: they are obtained from the original CFT$_1$ state by a regularized quench operator defined using a Euclidean path-integral with an interface CFT$_1$ CFT$_2$ and CFT$_1$. Our results are consistent with the idea that the precise microscopic degrees of freedom and Hamiltonian of a holographic CFT are only important in fixing the asymptotic behavior of a dual spacetime, while the interior spacetime of a region spacelike separated from a boundary time slice is determined by more universal properties (such as entanglement structure) of the quantum state at this time slice. Our picture requires that low-energy gravitational theories related to CFTs that can be non-trivially coupled at an interface are part of the same non-perturbative theory of quantum gravity.

In this note, we consider entanglement and Renyi entropies for spatial subsystems of a boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) or of a CFT in a state constructed using a Euclidean BCFT path integral. Holographic calculations suggest that these entropies undergo phase transitions as a function of time or parameters describing the subsystem; these arise from a change in topology of the RT surface. In recent applications to black hole physics, such transitions have been seen to govern whether or not the bulk entanglement wedge of a (B)CFT region includes a portion of the black hole interior and have played a crucial role in understanding the semiclassical origin of the Page curve for evaporating black holes.
In this paper, we reproduce these holographic results via direct (B)CFT calculations. Using the replica method, the entropies are related to correlation functions of twist operators in a Euclidean BCFT. These correlations functions can be expanded in various channels involving intermediate bulk or boundary operators. Under certain sparseness conditions on the spectrum and OPE coefficients of bulk and boundary operators, we show that the twist correlators are dominated by the vacuum block in a single channel, with the relevant channel depending on the position of the twists. These transitions between channels lead to the holographically observed phase transitions in entropies.

The BFSS matrix model provides an example of gauge-theory / gravity duality where the gauge theory is a model of ordinary quantum mechanics with no spatial subsystems. If there exists a general connection between areas and entropies in this model similar to the Ryu-Takayanagi formula, the entropies must be more general than the usual subsystem entanglement entropies. In this note, we first investigate the extremal surfaces in the geometries dual to the BFSS model at zero and finite temperature. We describe a method to associate regulated areas to these surfaces and calculate the areas explicitly for a family of surfaces preserving $SO(8)$ symmetry, both at zero and finite temperature. We then discuss possible entropic quantities in the matrix model that could be dual to these regulated areas.

In this note, following [arXiv:1905.08255, arXiv:1905.08762, arXiv:1908.10996], we introduce and study various holographic systems which can describe evaporating black holes. The systems we consider are boundary conformal field theories for which the number of local degrees of freedom on the boundary ($c_{bdy}$) is large compared to the number of local degrees of freedom in the bulk CFT ($c_{bulk}$). We consider states where the boundary degrees of freedom on their own would describe an equilibrium black hole, but the coupling to the bulk CFT degrees of freedom allows this black hole to evaporate. The Page time for the black hole is controlled by the ratio $c_{bdy}/c_{bulk}$. Using both holographic calculations and direct CFT calculations, we study the evolution of the entanglement entropy for the subset of the radiation system (i.e. the bulk CFT) at a distance $d > a$ from the boundary. We find that the entanglement entropy for this subsystem increases until time $a + t_{Page}$ and then undergoes a phase transition after which the entanglement wedge of the radiation system includes the black hole interior. Remarkably, this occurs even if the radiation system is initially at the same temperature as the black hole so that the two are in thermal equilibrium. In this case, even though the black hole does not lose energy, it "radiates" information through interaction with the radiation system until the radiation system contains enough information to reconstruct the black hole interior.

We consider CFT states defined by adding nonlocal multi-trace sources to the Euclidean path integral defining the vacuum state. For holographic theories, we argue that these states correspond to states in the gravitational theory with a good semiclassical description but with a more general structure of bulk entanglement than states defined from single-trace sources. We show that at leading order in large N, the entanglement entropies for any such state are precisely the same as those of another state defined by appropriate single-trace effective sources; thus, if the leading order entanglement entropies are geometrical for the single-trace states of a CFT, they are geometrical for all the multi-trace states as well. Next, we consider the perturbative calculation of 1/N corrections to the CFT entanglement entropies, demonstrating that these show qualitatively different features, including non-analyticity in the sources and/or divergences in the naive perturbative expansion. These features are consistent with the expectation that the 1/N corrections include contributions from bulk entanglement on the gravity side. Finally, we investigate the dynamical constraints on the bulk geometry and the quantum state of the bulk fields which must be satisfied so that the entropies can be reproduced via the quantum-corrected Ryu-Takayanagi formula.

In this note, we describe a holographic CFT construction of states dual to scalar perturbations of the maximally extended three-dimensional AdS-Schwarzschild black hole. The states are constructed by adding sources for a scalar operator to the path integral that constructs the thermofield double state. For a scalar field of arbitrary mass, we provide the general map between sources and scalar field perturbations at linear order. With this, we investigate to what extent it is possible using this construction to produce perturbations localized to one side of the black hole horizon. Our results suggest that it is possible to produce arbitrarily localized perturbations (and thus, plausibly, general linear perturbations to the black hole initial data slice), but that the amplitude of the perturbation must be taken small as the perturbation becomes more localized in order that the sources do not diverge, as found for the pure AdS case considered in arXiv:1709.10101.

In this note, we explore the possibility that certain high-energy holographic CFT states correspond to black hole microstates with a geometrical behind-the-horizon region, modelled by a portion of a second asymptotic region terminating at an end-of-the-world (ETW) brane. We study the time-dependent physics of this behind-the-horizon region, whose ETW boundary geometry takes the form of a closed FRW spacetime. We show that in many cases, this behind-the-horizon physics can be probed directly by looking at the time dependence of entanglement entropy for sufficiently large spatial CFT subsystems. We study in particular states defined via Euclidean evolution from conformal boundary states and give specific predictions for the behavior of the entanglement entropy in this case. We perform analogous calculations for the SYK model and find qualitative agreement with our expectations.
A fascinating possibility is that for certain states, we might have gravity localized to the ETW brane as in the Randall-Sundrum II scenario for cosmology. In this case, the effective description of physics beyond the horizon could be a big bang/big crunch cosmology of the same dimensionality as the CFT. In this case, the d-dimensional CFT describing the black hole microstate would give a precise, microscopic description of the d-dimensional cosmological physics.

The BC-bit version of a holographic CFT state corresponds to a geometry that can be made arbitrarily similar to the associated CFT-state geometry within a "causal diamond" region defined by points that are spacelike separated from the boundary time slice at which the state is defined. These holographic multi BC-bit states can be well-represented by tensor networks in which the individual tensors are associated with states of small numbers of BC-bits.

The positivity of relative entropy for spatial subsystems in a holographic CFT implies the positivity of certain quantities in the dual gravitational theory. In this note, we consider CFT subsystems whose boundaries lie on the lightcone of a point $p$. We show that the positive gravitational quantity which corresponds to the relative entropy for such a subsystem $A$ is a novel notion of energy associated with a gravitational subsystem bounded by the minimal area extremal surface $\tilde{A}$ associated with $A$ and by the AdS boundary region $\hat{A}$ corresponding to the part of the lightcone from $p$ bounded by $\partial A$. This generalizes the results of arXiv:1605.01075 for ball-shaped regions by making use of the recent results in arXiv:1703.10656 for the vacuum modular Hamiltonian of regions bounded on lightcones. As part of our analysis, we give an analytic expression for the extremal surface in pure AdS associated with any such region $A$. We note that its form immediately implies the Markov property of the CFT vacuum (saturation of strong subadditivity) for regions bounded on the same lightcone. This gives a holographic proof of the result proven for general CFTs in arXiv:1703.10656. A similar holographic proof shows the Markov property for regions bounded on a lightsheet for non-conformal holographic theories defined by relevant perturbations of a CFT.

This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1708.01645, which gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a system to admit LME states in terms of its subsystem dimensions $(d_1, d_2, \dots, d_n)$, and computes the dimension of the space ${\cal H}_{LME}/K$ of LME states up to local unitary transformations for all non-empty cases. In this paper, we provide a pedagogical overview and physical interpretation of the the underlying mathematics that leads to these results and give a large class of explicit constructions for LME states. In particular, we construct all LME states for tripartite systems with subsystem dimensions $(2,A,B)$ and give a general representation-theoretic construction for a special class of stabilizer LME states. The latter construction provides a common framework for many known LME states. Our results also give the dimension of the space of SLOCC equivalence classes for states with "generic" entanglement for all multipart systems since this space is equivalent to ${\cal H}_{LME}/K$. Finally, we give the dimension of the stabilizer subgroup $S \subset SL(d_1, \mathbb{C}) \times \cdots \times SL(d_n, \mathbb{C})$ for a generic state in an arbitrary multipart system and identify all cases where this stabilizer is trivial.

We consider states of holographic conformal field theories constructed by adding sources for local operators in the Euclidean path integral, with the aim of investigating the extent to which arbitrary bulk coherent states can be represented by such Euclidean path-integrals in the CFT. We construct the associated dual Lorentzian spacetimes perturbatively in the sources. Extending earlier work, we provide explicit formulae for the Lorentzian fields to first order in the sources for general scalar field and metric perturbations in arbitrary dimensions. We check the results by holographically computing the Lorentzian one-point functions for the sourced operators and comparing with a direct CFT calculation. We present evidence that at the linearized level, arbitrary bulk initial data profiles can be generated by an appropriate choice of Euclidean sources. However, in order to produce initial data that is very localized, the amplitude must be taken small at the same time otherwise the required sources diverge, invalidating the perturbative approach.

Geometrically, we ask given $(d_1,...,d_n)$, when is the geometric invariant theory quotient $\mathbb{P}(V_1 \otimes \dots \otimes V_n)// G$ non-empty? This is equivalent to the quantum mechanical question of whether the multipart quantum system with Hilbert space $V_1\otimes \dots \otimes V_n$ has a locally maximally entangled state, i.e. a state such that the density matrix for each elementary subsystem is a multiple of the identity. We show that the answer to this question is yes if and only if $R(d_1,...,d_n)\geqslant 0$ where \[ R(d_1,...,d_n) = \prod_i d_i +\sum_{k=1}^n (-1)^k \sum_{1\leq i_1<\dotsb <i_k\leq n} (\gcd(d_{i_1},\dotsc ,d_{i_k}) )^{2}. \] We also provide a simple recursive algorithm which determines the answer to the question, and we compute the dimension of the resulting quotient in the non-empty cases.

In this paper, we demonstrate the emergence of nonlinear gravitational equations directly from the physics of a broad class of conformal field theories. We consider CFT excited states defined by adding sources for scalar primary or stress tensor operators to the Euclidean path integral defining the vacuum state. For these states, we show that up to second order in the sources, the entanglement entropy for all ball-shaped regions can always be represented geometrically (via the Ryu-Takayanagi formula) by an asymptotically AdS geometry. We show that such a geometry necessarily satisfies Einstein's equations perturbatively up to second order, with a stress energy tensor arising from matter fields associated with the sourced primary operators. We make no assumptions about AdS/CFT duality, so our work serves as both a consistency check for the AdS/CFT correspondence and a direct demonstration that spacetime and gravitational physics can emerge from the description of entanglement in conformal field theories.

We introduce a general class of toy models to study the quantum information-theoretic properties of black hole radiation. The models are governed by a set of isometries that specify how microstates of the black hole at a given energy evolve to entangled states of a tensor product black-hole/radiation Hilbert space. The final state of the black hole radiation is conveniently summarized by a tensor network built from these isometries. We introduce a set of quantities generalizing the Renyi entropies that provide a complete set of bipartite/multipartite entanglement measures, and give a general formula for the average of these over initial black hole states in terms of the isometries defining the model. For models where the dimension of the final tensor product radiation Hilbert space is the same as that of the space of initial black hole microstates, the entanglement structure is universal, independent of the choice of isometries. In the more general case, we find that models which best capture the "information-free" property of black hole horizons are those whose isometries are tensors corresponding to states of tripartite systems with maximally mixed subsystems.

In this paper we argue that classical, asymptotically AdS spacetimes that arise as states in consistent ultraviolet completions of Einstein gravity coupled to matter must satisfy an infinite family of positive energy conditions. To each ball-shaped spatial region $B$ of the boundary spacetime, we can associate a bulk spatial region $Σ_B$ between $B$ and the bulk extremal surface $\tilde{B}$ with the same boundary as $B$. We show that there exists a natural notion of a gravitational energy for every such region that is non-negative, and non-increasing as one makes the region smaller. The results follow from identifying this gravitational energy with a quantum relative entropy in the associated dual CFT state. The positivity and monotonicity properties of the gravitational energy are implied by the positivity and monotonicity of relative entropy, which holds universally in all quantum systems.

For holographic CFT states near the vacuum, entanglement entropies for spatial subsystems can be expressed perturbatively as an expansion in the one-point functions of local operators dual to light bulk fields. Using the connection between quantum Fisher information for CFT states and canonical energy for the dual spacetimes, we describe a general formula for this expansion up to second-order in the one-point functions, for an arbitrary ball-shaped region, extending the first-order result given by the entanglement first law. For two-dimensional CFTs, we use this to derive a completely explicit formula for the second-order contribution to the entanglement entropy from the stress tensor. We show that this stress tensor formula can be reproduced by a direct CFT calculation for states related to the vacuum by a local conformal transformation. This result can also be reproduced via the perturbative solution to a non-linear scalar wave equation on an auxiliary de Sitter spacetime, extending the first-order result in arXiv/1509.00113.

In quantum information theory, Fisher Information is a natural metric on the space of perturbations to a density matrix, defined by calculating the relative entropy with the unperturbed state at quadratic order in perturbations. In gravitational physics, Canonical Energy defines a natural metric on the space of perturbations to spacetimes with a Killing horizon. In this paper, we show that the Fisher information metric for perturbations to the vacuum density matrix of a ball-shaped region B in a holographic CFT is dual to the canonical energy metric for perturbations to a corresponding Rindler wedge R_B of Anti-de-Sitter space. Positivity of relative entropy at second order implies that the Fisher information metric is positive definite. Thus, for physical perturbations to anti-de-Sitter spacetime, the canonical energy associated to any Rindler wedge must be positive. This second-order constraint on the metric extends the first order result from relative entropy positivity that physical perturbations must satisfy the linearized Einstein's equations.

Specifically we consider a confining gauge theory in an expanding FRW universe and track the evolution of the stress-energy tensor during a period of expansion, varying the initial temperature as well as the rate and amplitude of the expansion. At strong coupling, particle production is inseparable from entropy production. As a result, we find significant qualitative differences from the weak coupling results: at strong coupling the system rapidly loses memory of its initial state as the amplitude is increased. Furthermore, in the regime where the Hubble parameter is parametrically smaller than the initial temperature, the dynamics is well modelled as a plasma evolving hydrodynamically towards equilibrium.

The entanglement "first law" in conformal field theories relates the entanglement entropy for a ball-shaped region to an integral over the same region involving the expectation value of the CFT stress-energy tensor, for infinitesimal perturbations to the CFT vacuum state. In recent work, this was exploited at leading order in $N$ in the context of large N holographic CFTs to show that any geometry dual to a perturbed CFT state must satisfy Einstein's equations linearized about pure AdS. In this note, we investigate the implications of the leading 1/N correction to the exact CFT result. We show that these corrections give rise to the source term for the gravitational equations: for semiclassical bulk states, the expectation value of the bulk stress-energy tensor appears as a source in the linearized equations. In particular, the CFT first law leads to Newton's Law of gravitation and the fact that all sources of stress-energy source the gravitational field. In our derivation, this universality of gravity comes directly from the universality of entanglement (the fact that all degrees of freedom in a subsystem contribute to entanglement entropy).

Entanglement entropy obeys a 'first law', an exact quantum generalization of the ordinary first law of thermodynamics. In any CFT with a semiclassical holographic dual, this first law has an interpretation in the dual gravitational theory as a constraint on the spacetimes dual to CFT states. For small perturbations around the CFT vacuum state, we show that the set of such constraints for all ball-shaped spatial regions in the CFT is exactly equivalent to the requirement that the dual geometry satisfy the gravitational equations of motion, linearized about pure AdS. For theories with entanglement entropy computed by the Ryu-Takayanagi formula $S=A/(4G_N)$, we obtain the linearized Einstein equations. For theories in which the vacuum entanglement entropy for a ball is computed by more general Wald functionals, we obtain the linearized equations for the associated higher-curvature theories. Using the first law, we also derive the holographic dictionary for the stress tensor, given the holographic formula for entanglement entropy. This method provides a simple alternative to holographic renormalization for computing the stress tensor expectation value in arbitrary higher derivative gravitational theories.

Starting with the $N_f=2$ Sakai-Sugimoto model, we truncate to a 5D Yang-Mills action for the gauge fields associated with the noncompact directions of the flavour D8-branes. We define a free parameter $γ$ that controls the strength of this Yang-Mills term relative to the Chern-Simons term that couples the abelian gauge field to the SU(2) instanton density. Moving away from $γ= 0$ should incorporate some of the effects of taking the Sakai-Sugimoto model away from large 't Hooft coupling $λ$. In this case, the baryon ground state corresponds to an oblate SU(2) instanton on the bulk flavour branes: the usual SO(4) symmetric instanton is deformed to spread more along the field theory directions than the radial direction. We numerically construct these anisotropic instanton solutions for various values of $γ$ and calculate the mass and baryon charge profile of the corresponding baryons. Using the value $γ= 2.55$ that has been found to best fit the mesonic spectrum of QCD, we find a value for the baryon mass of 1.19 GeV, significantly more realistic than the value 1.60 GeV computed previously using an SO(4) symmetric ansatz for the instanton.

In this note, we show that for holographic conformal field theories, this relation, together with the holographic connection between entanglement entropies and areas of extremal surfaces and the standard connection between the field theory stress tensor and the boundary behavior of the metric, implies that geometry dual to the perturbed state satisfies Einstein's equations expanded to linear order about pure AdS.

In this note, we begin by reviewing an argument (independent from 1304.6483) that the large AdS black holes dual to typical high-energy pure states of a single holographic CFT must have some structure at the horizon (i.e. a firewall/fuzzball). By weakly coupling the CFT to an auxiliary system, such a black hole can be made to evaporate. In a case where the auxiliary system is a second identical CFT, it is possible (for specific initial states) that the system evolves to precisely the thermofield double state as the original black hole evaporates. In this case, the dual geometry should include the "late-time" part of the eternal AdS black hole spacetime which includes smooth spacetime behind the horizon of the original black hole. Thus, we can say that the firewall evaporates. This provides a specific realization of the recent ideas of Maldacena and Susskind that the existence of smooth spacetime behind the horizon of an evaporating black hole can be enabled by maximal entanglement with a Hawking radiation system (in our case the second CFT) rather than prevented by it. For initial states which are not finely-tuned to produce the thermofield double state, the question of whether a late-time infalling observer experiences a firewall translates to a question about the gravity dual of a typical high-energy state of a two-CFT system.

In this note, we construct simple stochastic toy models for holographic gauge theories in which distributions of energy on a collection of sites evolve by a master equation with some specified transition rates. We build in only energy conservation, locality, and the standard thermodynamic requirement that all states with a given energy are equally likely in equilibrium. In these models, we investigate the qualitative behavior of the dynamics of the energy distributions for different choices of the density of states for the individual sites. For typical field theory densities of states (\log(ρ(E)) ~ E^{α<1}), the model gives diffusive behavior in which initially localized distributions of energy spread out relatively quickly. For large N gauge theories with gravitational duals, the density of states for a finite volume of field theory degrees of freedom typically includes a Hagedorn regime (\log(ρ(E)) ~ E). We find that this gives rise to a trapping of energy in subsets of degrees of freedom for parametrically long time scales before the energy leaks away. We speculate that this Hagedorn trapping may be part of a holographic explanation for long-lived gravitational bound states (black holes) in gravitational theories.

We investigate the entanglement between individual field theory modes in finite-density systems of interacting relativistic and non-relativistic fermions in one spatial dimension. We calculate the entanglement entropy for a single field theory mode and the mutual information between any two modes. The calculation is perturbative in the four-fermion (two-body) coupling, with the leading contribution at order lambda^2 log(lambda^2). At this leading order, the perturbative expression for the entanglement entropy of a mode diverges logarithmically as the momentum of the mode approaches the Fermi surface from above or below. The mutual information between modes is largest for pairs of modes just above and below the Fermi momentum. The entanglement properties of modes near the Fermi surface are qualitatively the same if the field theory is cut off to eliminate modes away from the Fermi surface.

In this note, we explain how asymptotically globally AdS spacetimes can be given an alternate dual description as entangled states of a pair of hyperbolic space CFTs, which are associated with complementary Rindler wedges of the AdS geometry. The reduced density matrix encoding the state of the degrees of freedom in one of these CFTs describes the physics in a single wedge, which we can think of as the region of spacetime accessible to an accelerated observer in AdS. For pure AdS, this density matrix is thermal, and we argue that the microstates in this thermal ensemble correspond to spacetimes that are almost indistinguishable from a Rindler wedge of pure AdS away from the horizon, but with the horizon replaced by some kind of singularity where the geometrical description breaks down. This alternate description of AdS, based on patches associated with particular observers, may give insight into the holographic description of cosmologies where no observer has access to the full spacetime.

In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, if the original state has a dual bulk spacetime with a good classical description, it is natural to ask how much information about the bulk spacetime is carried by the density matrix for such a subset of field theory degrees of freedom. In this note, we provide several constraints on the largest region that can be fully reconstructed, and discuss specific proposals for the geometric construction of this dual region.

The degrees of freedom of any interacting quantum field theory are entangled in momentum space. Thus, in the vacuum state, the infrared degrees of freedom are described by a density matrix with an entanglement entropy. We derive a relation between this density matrix and the conventional Wilsonian effective action. We argue that the entanglement entropy of and mutual information between subsets of field theoretic degrees of freedom at different momentum scales are natural observables in quantum field theory and demonstrate how to compute these in perturbation theory. The results may be understood heuristically based on the scale-dependence of the coupling strength and number of degrees of freedom. We measure the rate at which entanglement between degrees of freedom declines as their scales separate and suggest that this decay is related to the property of decoupling in quantum field theory.

In this note, we consider confining gauge theories in $D=2,3,4$ defined by $S^2$ or $T^2$ compactification of higher-dimensional conformal field theories with gravity duals. We investigate the behavior of these theories on de Sitter spacetime as a function of the Hubble parameter. We find that in each case, the de Sitter vacuum state of the field theory (defined by Euclidian continuation from a sphere) undergoes a deconfinement transition as the Hubble parameter is increased past a critical value. In each case, the corresponding critical de Sitter temperature is smaller than the corresponding Minkowski-space deconfinement temperature by a factor nearly equal to the dimension of the de Sitter spacetime. The behavior is qualitatively and quantitatively similar to that for confining theories defined by $S^1$ compactification of CFTs, studied recently in arXiv:1007.3996.

In this note, we discuss the basic elements that should appear in a gravitational system dual to a confining gauge theory displaying color superconductivity at large baryon density. We consider a simple system with these minimal elements, and show that for a range of parameters, the phase structure of this model as a function of temperature and baryon chemical potential exhibits phases that can be identified with confined, deconfined, and color superconducting phases in the dual field theory. We find that the critical temperature at which the superconducting phase disappears is remarkably small (relative to the chemical potential). This small number arises from the dynamics, and is unrelated to any small parameter in the model that we study. We discuss similar models which exhibit flavor superconductivity.

We describe the dynamics of strongly coupled field theories in de Sitter spacetime using the holographic gauge/gravity duality. The main motivation for this is to explore the possibility of dynamical phase transitions during cosmological evolution. Specifically, we study two classes of theories: (i) conformal field theories on de Sitter in the static patch which are maintained in equilibrium at temperatures that may differ from the de Sitter temperature and (ii) confining gauge theories on de Sitter spacetime. In the former case we show the such states make sense from the holographic viewpoint in that they have regular bulk gravity solutions. In the latter situation we add to the evidence for a confinement/deconfinement transition for a large N planar gauge theory as the cosmological acceleration is increased past a critical value. For the field theories we study, the critical acceleration corresponds to a de Sitter temperature which is less than the Minkowski space deconfinement transition temperature by a factor of the spacetime dimension.
