(Abridged) Modern studies and industrial applications related to the design, radiation protection, and reliability of nuclear facilities, medical applications, as well as space research and exploration are relying on extensive simulations and modeling. Computer codes realizing semi-classical and quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) approaches are often employed to make up for the lack of accelerator data on many nuclear reactions at intermediate and high energies (>10s of MeV/n) and are in high demand. This contribution focuses on the methodology of generating reliable proton-induced cross sections in the energy range below 1 GeV. We developed a problem-oriented computer framework based on MCNPX and CASCADE/INPE codes to calculate activation cross section data at intermediate and high energies. Goodness of the fits of nucleon-nucleus interaction models to the existing data is evaluated based on elaborated algorithms. The method is based on the analysis of a large set of data and calculated cross sections for different targets and residual nuclei in a wide range of proton energies using numerous criteria. In practice, this could be done by tuning the model parameters and algorithms to fit required experimental data subset, or through achieving unification and consistency of fundamental parameters for all considered reactions. The presented framework is pursuing the latter approach. We use proton-induced reactions on Si and Fe nuclei to illustrate the application of the developed multi-criteria algorithm, where we use all data below 1 GeV available from the EXFOR data library and the IAEA CRP "Benchmark of Spallation Models." We show that the analysis of the predictive power of various intermediate and high-energy models based on the multi-criteria algorithm allows more sophisticated selection of appropriate models in a given energy range and residual nuclei domain.

Irradiation of nat-Ta and nat-W samples performed for other purposes provides an opportunity to study the corresponding reactions. This paper pre-sents the 178m2Hf independent production cross sections for both targets measured by the gamma-ray spectrometry method. The reaction excitation functions have been obtained for the proton energies from 40 up to 2600 MeV. The experimental results were compared with calculations by various versions of the intranuclear cascade model in the well-known codes: ISABEL, Bertini, INCL4.5+ABLA07, PHITS, CASCADE07 and CEM03.02. The isomer ratio for the nat-Ta(p,x)178m2Hf reaction is evaluated on the basis of the available data.

178m2-Hf is an extremely interesting isomeric state due to its potential energy capacity level. One possible way to obtain it is by irradiation of a nat-Ta sample with a high-current proton accelerator. Up to now, there was no information in the international experimental nuclear data base (EXFOR) for this reaction. Irradiations of nat-Ta samples performed for other purposes provide an opportunity to address this question. This paper presents the 172m2-Hf independent production cross-sections determined by gamma-ray spectrometry. The nat-Ta(p,x)172m2-Hf excitation function is studied in the 20-3500 MeV energy range. Comparisons with results by several nuclear models (ISABEL, Bertini, INCL4.5+ABLA07, PHITS, CASCADE07, and CEM03.02) used as event-generators in modern transport codes are also reported. However, since such models are generally not able to separately predict ground and isomeric states of reaction products, only 178-Hf independent and cumulative cross-section data are compared.

A general agreement of the ITEP data with the data obtained by other groups, including the numerous GSI data measured by the inverse kinematics method was found. Simulations of the measured data were performed with the MCNPX (Bertini and ISABEL options), CEM03.02, INCL4.2+ABLA, INCL4.5+ABLA07, PHITS, and CASCADE.07 codes. Deviation factors between the calculated and experimental cross sections have been estimated for each target and for the whole energy range covered by our measurements. Two-dimensional diagrams of deviation factor values were produced for estimating the predictive power of every code for intermediate, not measured masses of nuclei-targets and bombarding energies of protons. Further improvements of all tested here codes are recommended. In addition, new measurements at ITEP of nuclide yields from a 208-Pb target irradiated by 500 MeV protons are presented. A good agreement between these new data and the GSI measurements obtained by the inverse kinematics method was found

The measured data have been compared with the experimental data obtained elsewhere by the direct and inverse kinematics methods and with calculations by 15 codes, namely: MCNPX (INCL, CEM2k, BERTINI, ISABEL), LAHET (BERTINI, ISABEL), CEM03 (.01, .G1, .S1), LAQGSM03 (.01, .G1, >.S1), CASCADE-2004, LAHETO, and BRIEFF. Most of our data are in a good agreement with the inverse kinematics results and disprove the results of some earlier activation measurements that were quite different from the inverse kinematics measurements. The most significant calculation-to-experiment differences are observed in the yields of the A<30 light nuclei, indicating that further improvements in nuclear reaction models are needed, and pointing out as well to a necessity of more complete measurements of such reactions.

All the samples were aligned with the proton beam axis inside and outside the demountable 92-cm thick Pb target of 15-cm diameter assembled of 23 4-cm thick discs. The samples were placed on 12 target disks to reproduce the long axis distribution of protons and neutrons. In June 2006, the target was exposed for 18 hours to a 800-MeV proton beam extracted from the ITEP U-10 accelerator. The proton fluence and the proton beam shape were determined using the 27Al(p,x)7Be monitor reaction. The reaction rates were determined by the direct gamma-spectrometry techniques. In total, 1196 gamma-spectra have been measured, and about 1500 reaction rates determined. The measured reaction rates were simulated by the MCNPX code using the following databases: ENDF/B6 for neutrons below 20 MeV, MENDL2 for 20-100 MeV neutrons, and MENDL2P for proton cross sections up to 200 MeV. An acceptable agreement of simulations with experimental data has been found.

The measured cross sections are compared with experimental data of GSI (inverse kinematics, 1 GeV/nucleon 208Pb and 0.8 GeV/nucleon 197Au interacting with a liquid hydrogen target, and the ZSR data (direct kinematics, 1.0 and 0.8 GeV protons on nat-Pb and 197Au, respectively). All experimental data are compared with each other and with results by the Los Alamos codes CEM2k+GEM2, LAQGSM+GEM2, and LAHET (INLC option: Cugnon's INC + Schmidt's evaporation and fission models).

The predictive power of these codes is reasonable for nuclides in the near spallation region but is worse for deep spallation and much worse in the fission region. None of these codes agree well with the data in the whole mass region of product nuclides and all must be improved to become reliable tools for accelerator-driven applications.

The preliminary results are presented of the experimental determination of threshold reaction rates in experimental samples made of Al, Co, Bi, In, Au, to name but a few, placed both inside and on the surface of extended thick W-Na target irradiated with 0.8 GeV protons. The target consists of 26 alternating discs each 150 mm in diameter: 6 tungsten discs are 20 mm thick, 7 tungsten discs are 40 mm thick, and 13 sodium discs are 40 mm thick. The relative position of discs is matched with the aim of flattening the neutron field along the target surface. The comparison is made of the measured rates with results of their simulation using the LAHET and KASKAD-S codes, and the ENDF/B6, MENDL2, MENDL2P, SADKO-2, and ABBN-93 databases. The results are of interest both in terms of integral data collection and to test the up-to-the-date predictive power of the codes applied in designing of hybrid Accelerator Driven System (ADS) systems that use tungsten targets cooled with sodium.
