Layered transition-metal chalcogenides (Zr,Hf)GeTe$_{4}$ were screened out from database of Atomwork as a candidate for pressure-induced superconductivity due to their narrow band gap and high density of state near the Fermi level. The (Zr,Hf)GeTe$_{4}$ samples were synthesized in single crystal and then the compositional ratio, crystal structures, and valence states were investigated via energy dispersive spectrometry, single crystal X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The pressure-induced superconductivity in both crystals were first time reported by using a diamond anvil cell with a boron-doped diamond electrode and an undoped diamond insulating layer. The maximum superconducting transition temperatures of ZrGeTe$_{4}$ and HfGeTe$_{4}$ were 6.5 K under 57 GPa and 6.6 K under 60 GPa, respectively.

In 1869, the first draft of the periodic table was published by Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev. In terms of data science, his achievement can be viewed as a successful example of feature embedding based on human cognition: chemical properties of all known elements at that time were compressed onto the two-dimensional grid system for tabular display. In this study, we seek to answer the question of whether machine learning can reproduce or recreate the periodic table by using observed physicochemical properties of the elements. To achieve this goal, we developed a periodic table generator (PTG). The PTG is an unsupervised machine learning algorithm based on the generative topographic mapping (GTM), which can automate the translation of high-dimensional data into a tabular form with varying layouts on-demand. The PTG autonomously produced various arrangements of chemical symbols, which organized a two-dimensional array such as Mendeleev's periodic table or three-dimensional spiral table according to the underlying periodicity in the given data. We further showed what the PTG learned from the element data and how the element features, such as melting point and electronegativity, are compressed to the lower-dimensional latent spaces.

We focused on AgIn$_{5}$Se$_{8}$ which has high density of state near the Fermi level. AgIn$_{5}$Se$_{8}$ was successfully synthesized as single crystals using a melt and slow cooling method. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the obtained crystal is high quality without deficiencies. The valence states in AgIn$_{5}$Se$_{8}$ were determined to be Ag1+, In3+ and Se2- in accordance with a formal charge by the core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The electrical resistance was evaluated under high pressure using a diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond electrodes. Although the sample was insulator with a resistance of above 40 MΩ at ambient pressure, the resistance markedly decreased with increase of the pressure, and a pressure-induced superconducting transition was discovered at 3.4 K under 52.5 GPa. The transition temperature increased up to 3.7 K under further pressure of 74.0 GPa.

We propose a novel representation of crystalline materials named orbital-field matrix (OFM) based on the distribution of valence shell electrons. We demonstrate that this new representation can be highly useful in mining material data. Our experiment shows that the formation energies of crystalline materials, the atomization energies of molecular materials, and the local magnetic moments of the constituent atoms in transition metal--rare-earth metal bimetal alloys can be predicted with high accuracy using the OFM. Knowledge regarding the role of coordination numbers of transition-metal and rare-earth metal elements in determining the local magnetic moment of transition metal sites can be acquired directly from decision tree regression analyses using the OFM.

The prediction accuracy for $T_C$ is maximized when five to ten descriptors are selected, with the rare-earth concentration being the most relevant. Using first-principles method, we study the effect of substitutional 3d transition metal elements to the mother compound NdFe12. We find that Co has positive effect on the stability of the ThMn12 structure. In contrast with Ti substitution, Co substitution does not reduce the magnetization significantly. The crystal field parameter <r^{2}>A_{0}^{2} is nearly unchanged by Co substitution, and nitrogenation to NdFe11Co greatly enhances <r^{2}>A_{0}^{2}. This suggests that Co is a good candidate as a substitutional element for NdFe12N.

We study magnetic properties of NdFe$_{11}$Ti$X$, where $X$=B, C, N, O, and F, by using the first-principles calculation based on the density functional theory. Its parent compound NdFe$_{11}$Ti has the ThMn$_{12}$ structure, which has the symmetry of space group $I4/mmm$, No. 139. The magnetization increases by doping B, C, N, O, and F at the $2b$ site of the ThMn$_{12}$ structure. The amount of the increase is larger for $X$=N, O, F than for $X$=B, C. On the other hand, the crystal field parameter $\langle r^{2} \rangle A_{0}^{2}$, which controls the axial magnetic anisotropy of the Nd $4f$ magnetic moment, depends differently on the dopant. With increase of the atomic number from $X$=B, $\langle r^{2} \rangle A_{0}^{2}$ increases, takes a maximum value for $X$=N, and then turns to decrease. This suggests that in NdFe$_{11}$Ti$X$, nitrogen is the most appropriate dopant among B, C, N, O, and F for permanent magnets in terms of magnetization and anisotropy. The above calculated properties are explained based on the detailed analysis of the electronic structures of NdFe$_{11}$Ti$X$.

The electronic states of isostructural single-component molecular conductors [M(tmdt)2] (M= Ni, Au, and Cu) are theoretically studied. By considering fragments of molecular orbitals as basis functions, we construct a multiorbital model common for the three materials. The tight-binding parameters are estimated from results of first-principles band calculations, leading to a systematic view of their electronic structures. We find that the interplay between a pπ-type orbital (L) on each of the two ligands and a pdσ-type orbital (Mσ) centered on the metal site plays a crucial role: their energy difference controls the electronic states near the Fermi energy. For the magnetic materials (M= Au and Cu), we take into account Coulomb interactions on different orbitals, i.e., we consider the multiorbital Hubbard model. Its ground-state properties are calculated within mean-field approximation where various types of magnetic structures with different orbital natures are found. An explanation for the experimental results in [Cu(tmdt)2] is provided: The quasi-degeneracy of the two types of orbitals leads to a dual state where localized M$σ$ spins appear, and L sites show a nonmagnetic state owing to dimerization. On the other hand, [Au(tmdt)2] locates in the subtle region in terms of the degree of orbital mixing. We propose possible scenarios for its puzzling antiferromagnetic phase transition, involving the Mσorbital in contrast to previous discussions mostly concentrating on the L sector.

Nitrogen doping in graphene has important implications in graphene-based devices and catalysts. We have performed the density functional theory calculations to study the electronic structures of N-doped graphene with vacancies and Stone-Wales defect. Our results show that monovacancies in graphene act as hole dopants and that two substitutional N dopants are needed to compensate for the hole introduced by a monovacancy. On the other hand, divacancy does not produce any free carriers. Interestingly, a single N dopant at divacancy acts as an acceptor rather than a donor. The interference between native point defect and N dopant strongly modifies the role of N doping regarding the free carrier production in the bulk pi bands. For some of the defects and N dopant-defect complexes, localized defect pi states are partially occupied. Discussion on the possibility of spin polarization in such cases is given. We also present qualitative arguments on the electronic structures based on the local bond picture. We have analyzed the 1s-related x-ray photoemission and adsorption spectroscopy spectra of N dopants at vacancies and Stone-Wales defect in connection with the experimental ones. We also discuss characteristic scanning tunneling microscope (STM) images originating from the electronic and structural modifications by the N dopant-defect complexes. STM imaging for small negative bias voltage will provide important information about possible active sites for oxygen reduction reaction.

To understand the interaction between nitrogen dopants and native point defects in graphene, we have studied the energetic stability of N-doped graphene with vacancies and Stone-Wales (SW) defect by performing the density functional theory calculations. Our results show that N substitution energetically prefers to occur at the carbon atoms near the defects, especially for those sites with larger bond shortening, indicating that the defect-induced strain plays an important role in the stability of N dopants in defective graphene. In the presence of monovacancy, the most stable position for N dopant is the pyridinelike configuration, while for other point defects studied (SW defect and divacancies) N prefers a site in the pentagonal ring. The effect of native point defects on N dopants is quite strong: While the N doping is endothermic in defect-free graphene, it becomes exothermic for defective graphene. Our results imply that the native point defect and N dopant attract each other, i.e., cooperative effect, which means that substitutional N dopants would increase the probability of point defect generation and vice versa. Our findings are supported by recent experimental studies on the N doping of graphene. Furthermore we point out possibilities of aggregation of multiple N dopants near native point defects. Finally we make brief comments on the effect of Fe adsorption on the stability of N dopant aggregation.

We have performed the first-principles electronic structure calculation for the novel superconductor Ca4Al2O6Fe2As2 which has the smallest a lattice parameter and the largest As height from the Fe plane among the Fe-As superconductors. We find that one of the hole-like Fermi surfaces is missing around the Gamma point compared to the case of LaFeAsO. Analysis using the maximally-localized-Wannier-function technique indicates that the xy orbital becomes more localized as the As-Fe-As angle decreases. This induces rearrangement of bands, which results in the change of the Fermi-surface topology of Ca4Al2O6Fe2As2 from that of LaFeAsO. The strength of electron correlation is also evaluated using the constraint RPA method, and it turns out that Ca4Al2O6Fe2As2 is more correlated than LaFeAsO.

Detailed analysis using MLWFs is applied to three closely related materials, single benzene (Bz) molecule, organometallic Vanadium-Bz infinite chain, and V$_2$Bz$_{3}$ sandwich cluster. Two important results come out from the present analysis: 1) for the infinite chain, the validity of the basic assumption in the mechanism of Kanamori and Terakura for the ferromagnetic (FM) state stability is confirmed; 2) for V$_2$Bz$_3$, an important role played by the difference in the orbital energy between the edge Bzs and the middle Bz is newly revealed: the on-site energy of p$δ$ states of edge Bzs is higher than that of middle Bz, which further reduces the FM stability of V$_2$Bz$_3$.

The electronic and magnetic properties of the mother material LaOFeAs of new superconductors have been carefully studied using first-principles electronic structure calculations based on the generalized gradient approximation in the density functional theory. The present calculation predicts that the ground state of LaOFeAs is antiferromagnetic with a stripe type magnetic moment alignment leading to orthorhombic symmetry of the crystal. In this particular magnetic state, the density of states at the Fermi level is very small. On the other hand, LaOFeP has turned out to be paramagnetic and a good metal. Electronic states of single-component molecular metals M(tmdt)2 (M = Ni, Au) are studied theoretically. We construct an effective three-band Hubbard model for each material by numerical fitting to first-principles band calculations, while referring to molecular orbital calculations for the isolated molecules. The model consists of two kinds of base orbital for each molecule with hybridization between them, i.e., a π-character orbital for each of the two tmdt ligands, and, a pdπ-orbital for M = Ni or a pdσ-orbital for M = Au centered on the metal site; this indicates that these materials can be considered as novel multiband π-d systems. We find that both orbitals contribute to realize the metallic character in Ni(tmdt)2. The origin of the antiferromagnetic transition observed in Au(tmdt)2 is also discussed based on this model.

The mechanism of ferromagnetism stability in sandwich clusters V$_n$(C$_6$H$_6$)$_{n+1}$ has been studied by first-principles calculation and model analysis. It is found that each of the three types of bonds between V and benzene (Bz) plays different roles. V 3d$_{z^2}$ orbital, extending along the molecular axis, is weakly hybridized with Bz's HOMO-1 orbital to form the $σ$-bond. It is quite localized and singly occupied, which contributes 1$μ_B$ to the magnetic moment but little to the magnetic coupling of neighboring V magnetic moments. The in-plane d$_{x^2-y^2}$, d$_{xy}$ orbitals are hybridized with the LUMO of Bz and constitute the $δ$-bond. This hybridization is medium and crucial to the magnetic coupling though the $δ$ states have no net contribution to the total magnetic moment. d$_{xz}$, d$_{yz}$ and HOMO of Bz form a quite strong $π$-bond to hold the molecular structure but they are inactive in magnetism because their energy levels are far away from the Fermi level. Based on the results of first-principles calculation, we point out that the ferromagnetism stability is closely related with the mechanism proposed by Kanamori and Terakura [J. Kanamori and K. Terakura, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 70, 1433 (2001)]. However, the presence of edge Bz's in the cluster introduces an important modification. A simple model is constructed to explain the essence of the physical picture.

{\it Ab initio} investigations of the full static dielectric response and Born effective charge of BN nanotubes (BN-NTs) have been performed for the first time using finite electric field method. It is found that the ionic contribution to the static dielectric response of BN-NTs is substantial and also that a pronounced chirality-dependent oscillation is superimposed on the otherwise linear relation between the longitudinal electric polarizability and the tube diameter ($D$), as for a thin dielectric cylinderical shell. In contrast, the transverse dielectric response of the BN-NTs resemble the behavior of a thin (non-ideal) conducting cylindrical shell of a diameter of $D+4$Å$ $, with a screening factor of 2 for the inner electric field. The medium principal component $Z_y^*$ of the Born effective charge corresponding to the transverse atomic displacement tangential to the BN-NT surface, has a pronounced $D$-dependence (but independent of chirality), while the large longitudinal component $Z_z^*$ exhibits a clear chirality dependence (but nearly $D$-independent), suggesting a powerful way to characterize the diameter and chirality of a BN-NT.

We present first-principles studies on the orbital states of the layered perovskites Ca$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$RuO$_4$. The crossover from antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulator for $x < 0.2$ to nearly ferromagnetic (FM) metal at $x=0.5$ is characterized by the systematic change of the $xy$ orbital occupation. For the AF side ($x < 0.2$), we present firm evidence for the $xy$ ferro-orbital ordering. It is found that the degeneracy of $t_{2g}$ (or $e_g$) states is lifted robustly due to the two-dimensional (2D) crystal-structure, even without the Jahn-Teller distortion of RuO$_6$. This effect dominates, and the cooperative occupation of $xy$ orbital is concluded. In contrast to recent proposals, the resulting electronic structure explains well both the observed X-ray absorption spectra and the double peak structure of optical conductivity. For the FM side ($x=0.5$), however, the $xy$ orbital with half filling opens a pseudo-gap in the FM state and contributes to the spin $S$=1/2 moment (rather than $S$=1 for $x$=0.0 case) dominantly, while $yz,zx$ states are itinerant with very small spin polarization, explaining the recent neutron data consistently.

Using results of the band structure calculations in the local-spin-density approximation we demonstrate how the crystal distortions affect the magnetic structure of orthorhombically distorted perovskites leading to a non-collinear spin arrangement. Our results suggest that the non-collinearity of the spin magnetic moments, being generally small in La$M$O$_3$ series with $M$=Cr-Fe, is large in Sr…

The anisotropy of low energy (0$\sim$5eV) optical excitations in strongly correlated transition-metal oxides is closely related to the spin and orbital orderings. The recent successes of LDA+$U$ method in describing the magnetic and electronic structures enable us to calculate the optical conductivity from first-principles. The LaVO$_3$ and YVO$_3$, both of which have $3d^2$ configuration and have various spin and orbital ordered phases at low temperature, show distinct anisotropy in the optical spectra. The effects of spin and orbital ordering on the anisotropy are studied in detail based on our first-principles calculations. The experimental spectra of both compounds at low temperature phases can be qualitatively explained with our calculations, while the studies for the intermediate temperature phase of YVO$_3$ suggest the substantial persistence of the low temperature phase at elevated temperature.

Using first principle band structure calculations, we critically examine results of resonant x-ray scattering experiments which is believed to directly probe charge and orbital ordering. Considering the specific case of La0.5Sr1.5MnO4, we show that this technique actually probes most directly and sensitively small structural distortions in the system. Such distortions, often difficult to detect with more conventional techniques, invariably accompany and usually cause the orbital and charge orderings. In this sense, this technique is only an indirect probe of such types of ordering. Our results also provide a microscopic explanation of the novel types of charge and orbital ordering realized in this system and other doped manganites.

A long-standing problem of generalizing the recursion method to a non-orthogonal basis, which is a crucial step to make the recursion method applicable to ab initio calculations, is solved by the introduction of the hybrid representation and the two-sided block Lanczos algorithm. As a test of efficiency of the new method, convergence properties in energy and force of insulators, semiconductors, metals, and molecules are studied for not only simple model systems but also some real materials within the density functional theory. The present O(N) method possesses good convergence properties for metals as well as insulators.

We found that the surfaces are quite different from the bulk in the sense that both the (La, Sr)O and MnO$_2$ terminated surfaces show strong tendency toward antiferromagnetism (A-type and C-type respectively). The basic physics governing the phase diagram can be understood in terms of the surface orbital polarizations. It is also found that the strong surface segregation of Sr atoms is mostly caused by the electrostatic interaction and will further enhance the tendency to surface antiferromagnetism.

We found that the rotation and the tilting of RuO$_6$ octahedron are responsible for the ferro- and antiferro-magnetism, respectively, while the flattening of RuO$_6$ is the key factor to stabilize those magnetic ground states. Our results imply that the magnetic and the structural instabilities in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ are closely correlated cooperatively rather than competitively.

Moreover, with M=W, the electronic and magnetic properties suddenly change to insulating and antiferromagnetic with the N{é}el temperature of only 16$\sim$37 K. Based on detailed electronic structure calculations, a new mechanism is proposed which stabilizes the strong ferromagnetic state for M=Mo and Re and is passivated for M=W.

This approach is found to provide a good description of the spin dynamics of the doped manganites, observed earlier within the ab initio calculations. Our analysis not only provides some insight into the roles of the eg and the t2g states but also indicates that the oxygen p states play an important role in the spin dynamics. This may cast doubt on the adaptability of the conventional model Hamiltonian approaches to the analysis of spin dynamics of doped manganites.

The high-pressure phases of FeO and MnO were studied by the first principles calculations. The present theoretical study predicts that the high-pressure phase of MnO is a metallic normal B8 structure (nB8), while that of FeO should take the inverse B8 structure (iB8). The novel feature of the unique high-pressure phase of stoichiometric FeO is that the system should be a band insulator in the ordered antiferromagnetic (AF) state and that the existence of a band gap leads to special stability of the phase. The observed metallicity of the high-pressure and high-temperature phase of FeO may be caused by the loss of AF order and also by the itinerant carriers created by non-stoichiometry. Analysis of x-ray diffraction experiments provides a further support to the present theoretical prediction for both FeO and MnO. Strong stability of the high-pressure phase of FeO will imply possible important roles in Earth's core.

The electronic structure of the doped manganites Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ was calculated by the LSDA+U method which takes into account the local Coulomb interaction between d-electrons of transition metal ions. In contrast to the standard local spin density approximation (LSDA) no Jahn-Teller lattice distortions are needed to reproduce the experimentally observed orbital ordering in the undoped PrMnO$_3$. The correct ground state : a charge and orbital ordered antiferromagnetic insulator, was obtained for Pr$_{1/2}$Ca$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$. The results are in good agreement with the neutron diffraction data.
