By employing the closest point method, we extend the applicability of minimizing movements to the surface PDE setting. The corresponding approximation methods are created, and their convergence is observed. The numerical methods are then used to develop threshold dynamics algorithms for surface-constrained interfacial motions. In particular, show how the minimizing movements enable one to approximate multiphase, volume-preserving, curvature flows on surfaces via generalized MBO and HMBO algorithms.

Abstract:
This paper is an extension of the result by Christowiak and Kreisbeck (2017), which addresses the Gamma-convergence approach to a homogenization problem for composite materials consisting of two distinct types of parallel layers. In Christowiak et al. (2017), one of the layers of the material undergoes only local rotations while the other allows local rotation and plastic deformation along a singl…

This paper is an extension of the result by Christowiak and Kreisbeck (2017), which addresses the Gamma-convergence approach to a homogenization problem for composite materials consisting of two distinct types of parallel layers. In Christowiak et al. (2017), one of the layers of the material undergoes only local rotations while the other allows local rotation and plastic deformation along a single slip system. On the other hand, real materials show an interplay of multiple directions of slip. Here we obtain the Gamma-limit for the problem where the number of slip directions is increased to two. When the slip systems are orthogonal, we derive the full homogenized energy based on generalized convex envelopes of the original energy density. Since these envelopes are not completely known for angles between slip directions differing from the right angle, we present a partial, conditional homogenization result in this general case. The analysis is based on a modification of the classical construction of laminate microstructures but several nontrivial difficulties arise due to nonconvex constraints being present in the composite energy.

We formulate a large-strain model of single-slip crystal elastoplasticity in the framework of energetic solutions. Numerical performance of the model is compared with lab experiments on the compression of a stack of note papers.

Abstract:
We extend thresholding methods for numerical realization of mean curvature flow on obstacles to the anisotropic setting where interfacial energy depends on the orientation of the interface. This type of schemes treats the interface implicitly, which supports natural implementation of topology changes, such as merging and splitting, and makes the approach attractive for applications in material sci…

We extend thresholding methods for numerical realization of mean curvature flow on obstacles to the anisotropic setting where interfacial energy depends on the orientation of the interface. This type of schemes treats the interface implicitly, which supports natural implementation of topology changes, such as merging and splitting, and makes the approach attractive for applications in material science. The main tool in the new scheme are convolution kernels developed in previous studies, that approximate the given anisotropy in a nonlocal way. We provide a detailed report on the numerical properties of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:
We consider a hyperbolic free boundary problem by means of minimizing time discretized functionals of Crank-Nicolson type. The feature of this functional is that it enjoys energy conservation in the absence of free boundaries, which is an essential property for numerical calculations. The existence and regularity of minimizers is shown and an energy estimate is derived. These results are then used…

The existence and regularity of minimizers is shown and an energy estimate is derived. These results are then used to show the existence of a weak solution to the free boundary problem in the 1-dimensional setting.

We develop a numerical method for realizing mean curvature motion of interfaces separating multiple phases, whose areas are preserved throughout time. The foundation of the method is a thresholding algorithm of the Bence-Merriman-Osher type. The original algorithm is reformulated in a vector setting, which allows for a natural inclusion of constraints, even in the multiphase case. Moreover, a new method for overcoming the inaccuracy of thresholding methods on non-adaptive grids is designed, since this inaccuracy becomes especially prominent in area-preserving motions. Formal analysis of the method and numerical tests are presented.
