The ISM has only been formulated with an imitation (''ferromagnetic'') interaction between velocities. Here we show how to add position-dependent forces in the model, which allows to consider effects such as cohesion, excluded volume, confinement and perturbation with external position-dependent field. We study numerically a one-particle case.

We study the so-called neural network flow of spin configurations in the 2-d Ising ferromagnet. This flow is generated by successive reconstructions of spin configurations, obtained by an artificial neural network like a restricted Boltzmann machine or an autoencoder. It was reported recently that this flow may have a fixed point at the critical temperature of the system, and even allow the computation of critical exponents. Here we focus on the flow produced by a fully-connected autoencoder, and we refute the claim that this flow converges to the critical point of the system by directly measuring physical observables, and showing that the flow strongly depends on the network hyperparameters. We explore the network metric, the reconstruction error, and we relate it to the so called intrinsic dimension of data, to shed light on the origin and properties of the flow.

The effect of the spin-orbit coupling is included at effective level as a rotation of the electronic spin as the electrons hop from site to site. Our result reveals that a finite Hall conductivity in the planar 120$^{\circ}$ structure takes place if a finite spin-orbit coupling is present. A quantized Hall conductivity occurs at global band gaps resulting from the topologically non-trivial band structure.

Even more, in the region dominated by the exchange interaction, a standard BKT transition occurs. In the opposite regime, the one dominated by the DM interaction, a kind of inverse BKT transition (iBKT) takes place. As temperature rises, the vortex-antivortex lattice starts melting by annihilation of pairs of vortex-antivortex, in a sort of "inverse" BKT transition.

Swirling topological spin configurations, known as magnetic skyrmions, are known to be stabilised in chiral ferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). In particular, for appropriate values of the external magnetic field they appear in a topological crystalline phase, termed Skyrmion crystal phase (SkX). A similar phenomenon is present in the antiferromagnetic case, for the Heisenberg triangular antiferromagnet (HTAF) with DMI. Here, the most striking feature is that the emergent topological phase consists of three SkX interpenetrated sublattices. On the other hand, the pure HTAF, being described by an SO(3) order parameter, can host Z2 vortices. This rises the fundamental question on whether both non trivial structures are related. In this paper we unravel a hidden connection between both topological entities by studying the HTAF with anisotropic DMI. To this end, we combine an effective field theory description, the Luttinger-Tisza approximation and Monte Carlo simulations. We show that even a slight anisotropy in the DMI proves to be the key ingredient to deform the interpenetrated SkX structure and reveal a Z2-vortex crystal.

Magnetic skyrmions, topological spin textures observed in chiral magnets, have attracted huge interest due to their applications in the field of spintronics. In this work we study the stability of circular isolated skyrmions in ferromagnetic chiral magnets under the influence of different perturbations and external fields. To this end we develop a general systematic procedure based in a harmonic expansion series of the skyrmion boundary which allows the identifycation of the breakdown of the skyrmion circular shape on each instability channel independently. We apply our approach to a few representative spin models with actual interest in order to obtain the zero temperature phase diagram, where isolated skyrmions emerge as metaestable states. The results presented in this paper are in agreement with properties of isolated skyrmions observed in recent experiments opening the possibility of extending the analysis to more complex situations.

We study the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a magnetic field. We focus in particular in the emergence of a composite spin crystal phase, dubbed antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattice, that was recently observed in [Phys. Rev. B 92, 214439 (2015)] for intermediate fields. This complex phase can be made up from three inter-penetrated skyrmion lattices, one for each sub-lattice of the original triangular one. Following these recent numerical results, in this paper we explicitly construct the low-energy effective action that reproduces the correct phenomenology and could serve as a starting point to study the coupling to charge carriers, lattice vibrations, structural disorder and transport phenomena.

Based on a detailed symmetry analysis, we state the general rules to build up the effective low energy field theory describing a system of electrons weakly interacting with the lattice degrees of freedom. The basic elements in our construction are what we call the "memory tensors", that keep track of the microscopic discrete symmetries into the coarse-grained action. The present approach can be applied to lattice systems in arbitrary dimensions and in a systematic way to any desired order in derivatives. We apply the method to the honeycomb lattice and re-obtain the by now well-known effective action of Dirac fermions coupled to fictitious gauge fields. As a second example, we derive the effective action for electrons in the kagomé lattice, where our approach allows to obtain in a simple way the low energy electron-phonon coupling terms.

We present an exactly solvable model of a scalar field in an AdS$_{d+1}$ like background interpolating between a $Z_2$ preserving and a $Z_2$ breaking minima of the potential. We define its holographic dual through the AdS/CFT dictionary and argue that at zero temperature the $d-$dimensional strongly coupled system on the boundary of AdS$_{d+1}$ exhibits a phase with a spontaneously broken discrete symmetry. In the presence of a black hole in the bulk ($T\neq 0$) we find that, although the metastable phase is present, the discrete symmetry gets restored. We compute exactly the lowest order boundary correlation functions in the spontaneously broken phase at T=0, finding out a pole of the propagator for zero momenta that signals the presence of a massless mode.

In this Thesis, we focus on the study of the low energy approximation to non-critical string theories. We present an exhaustive study of their solutions, which are divided in three cases: vacuum, NSNS charged, and RR charged solutions. In the first case, we find all possible solutions, including the previously known ones, which are special cases of ours. In the second case, we present the fundamental non-critical string, doubly localized in Minkowski \times the cigar vacuum. There are only a few known solutions doubly localized. Also, we completely solve the problem of finding NSNS solutions that fill all the Minkowski space. In the third case, we present new parametric families that contain some of the previously known solutions at particular values of the parameters. For the latter families, we have obtained the gauge duals in the context of the gauge/gravity duality, and we show that, in a particular region of the parameter space, these theories can confine. Finally, we study the obtained YM in D=3 and YM in D=4 theories, and we show the corresponding glueball spectra, that are in very good agreement with those predicted by lattice QCD.

We carry out a gauge invariant analysis of certain perturbations of $D-2$-branes solutions of low energy string theories. We get generically a system of second order coupled differential equations, and show that only in very particular cases it is possible to reduce it to just one differential equation. Later, we apply it to a multi-parameter, generically singular family of constant dilaton solutions of non-critical string theories in $D$ dimensions, a generalization of that recently found in arXiv:0709.0471[hep-th]. According to arguments coming from the holographic gauge theory-gravity correspondence, and at least in some region of the parameters space, we obtain glue-ball spectra of Yang-Mills theories in diverse dimensions, putting special emphasis in the scalar metric perturbations not considered previously in the literature in the non critical setup. We compare our numerical results to those studied previously and to lattice results, finding qualitative and in some cases, tuning properly the parameters, quantitative agreement. These results seem to show some kind of universality of the models, as well as an irrelevance of the singular character of the solutions. We also develop the analysis for the T-dual, non trivial dilaton family of solutions, showing perfect agreement between them.

We consider solutions of (super) gravities associated to non-critical (super) string theories in arbitrary space-time dimension D=p+3, that describe generically non extremal black p-branes charged under NSNS or RR gauge fields, embedded in some non critical vacuum. In the case of vacuum (uncharged) backgrounds, we solve completely the problem obtaining all the possible solutions, that consist of the (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times a linear dilaton times a S^1, and a three parameter family of solutions that include (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times the cigar, and its T-dual (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times the trumpet. For NSNS charged solutions, we also solve in closed form the problem, obtaining several families of solutions, that include in particular the fundamental non-critical string solution embedded in the cigar vacuum, recently found in hep-th/0604202, a solution that we interpret as a fundamental non-critical string embedded in the linear dilaton vacuum, and a two-parameter family of regular curvature solutions asymptotic to AdS_{1,2}\times S^1. In the case of RR charged Dp-branes solutions, an ansatz allows us to find a non conformal, constant curvature, asymptotically AdS_{1,p+1} space, T-dual to AdS_{1,p+2}, together with a two-parameter family of solutions that includes the non conformal, AdS black hole like solution associated with the earlier space. The solutions obtained by T-duality are Einstein spaces consisting of a two-parameter family of conformal, constant dilaton solutions, that include, in particular, the AdS black hole of hep-th/0403254. We speculate about the possible applications of some of them in the framework of the gauge-gravity correspondence.

We obtain the (super) gravity solution in arbitrary space-time dimension less than ten, that gives a low energy description of a fundamental string embedded in a non critical vacuum, product of $d$-dimensional Minkowski space-time and a cigar-like geometry with scale $r_0$. This solution, one of the few known examples of objects doubly localized, both at the origin of the transverse space as well as at the tip of the cigar, is determined by its charge $Q$ under the Kalb-Ramond gauge field $B$, and presumably preserves, for even $d$, $2^\frac{d}{2}$ supercharges. Moreover, we show that the solution is reliable at least in a region far away from both origins, as it is the case with the well known branes of critical string theory.
