Noise-free comparison of stochastic agent-based simulations using common random numbers
Abstract: Random numbers are at the heart of every agent-based model (ABM) of health and disease. By representing each individual in a synthetic population, agent-based models enable detailed analysis of intervention impact and parameter sensitivity. Yet agent-based modeling has a fundamental signal-to-noise problem, in which small changes between simulations cannot be reliably differentiated from stochasti… ▽ More

The Solar and Geomagnetic Storms in May 2024: A Flash Data Report
Abstract: In May 2024, the scientific community observed intense solar eruptions that resulted in an extreme geomagnetic storm and auroral extension, highlighting the need to document and quantify these events. This study mainly focuses on their quantification. The source active region (AR 13664) evolved from 113 to 2761 millionths of the solar hemisphere between 4 May and 14 May 2024. AR 13664's magnetic f… ▽ More

Initial results from the New Horizons exploration of 2014 MU69, a small Kuiper Belt Object
Abstract: The Kuiper Belt is a distant region of the Solar System. On 1 January 2019, the New Horizons spacecraft flew close to (486958) 2014 MU69, a Cold Classical Kuiper Belt Object, a class of objects that have never been heated by the Sun and are therefore well preserved since their formation. Here we describe initial results from these encounter observations. MU69 is a bi-lobed contact binary with a fl… ▽ More

On the Precise Determination of the Fermi Coupling Constant from the Muon Lifetime
Abstract: The determination of the Fermi coupling constant, G_F, is examined in the light of recently calculated 2-loop QED corrections and planned experiments to measure the muon lifetime to a level below 1ppm. The methods used in the calculation of the QED corrections are described in detail. Sources of the dominant theoretical and experimental uncertainties are identified. Finally the incorporation of… ▽ More

Complete O(N_f alpha^2) Weak Contributions to the Muon Lifetime
Abstract: The complete O(N_f alpha^2) weak contributions to the muon lifetime, denoted as Delta r^(2), are calculated in the MS-bar renormalization scheme. These come from 2-loop Feynman diagrams containing a loop formed by complete generations of massless fermions. They form an independent, gauge-invariant set of corrections that, because of the large number of light fermions in the Standard Model, is ex… ▽ More

An Improved Determination of the Fermi Coupling Constant, G_F
Abstract: Over 40 years after the calculation of the 1-loop QED corrections to the muon lifetime, new theoretical developments have made it possible to obtain an analytic expression for the complete 2-loop QED contributions in the Fermi theory. The exact result for the effects of virtual and real photons, virtual electrons, muons and hadrons as well as e+e- pair creation is Delta Gamma^(2)=Gamma_0(alpha… ▽ More

O(N_f alpha^2) Electromagnetic Charge Renormalization in the Standard Model
Abstract: The O(N_f alpha^2) electroweak radiative corrections to the Thomson scattering matrix element are calculated for a general renormalization scheme with massless fermions. A number of stringent internal consistency checks are performed. The Z-gamma mixi… ▽ More

Hadronic Contributions to the Muon Lifetime

$O(N_fα^2)$ Radiative Corrections in Low-Energy Electroweak Processes
Abstract: Of the the three best-measured electroweak observables, $α$, $G_μ$ and $M_Z$, the first two are extracted from low-energy processes. Both $G_μ$ and $M_Z$ are now known to an accuracy of about 2 parts in $10^5$ and there is a proposal to improve the measurement of the muon lifetime by a factor of 10 in an experiment at Brookhaven. Order $N_fα^2$ Corrections in Low-Energy Electroweak Processes
Abstract: We provide a compendium of techniques that can be used to compute $O(N_fα^2)$ corrections to low-energy electroweak processes. Specifically, these are the 2-loop electroweak corrections containing a light fermion loop. It is shown that the vast majority of such corrections can be reduced to expressions involving a universal master integral for which an exact analytic form in dimensional regulari… ▽ More

O(N_fα^2) Corrections to Muon Decay
Abstract: The calculation of the $O(N_fα^2)$ corrections to muon decay is described. These are the 2-loop diagrams containing a massless fermion loop and they form an important gauge-invariant subclass. It is shown that all such diagrams can be expressed in terms of a universal master integral. We focus on the calculation of box diagrams and in particular on the removal of their infrared divergences.

A Global Fit of LEP/SLC Data with Light Superpartners
Abstract: We find that re-analyzing the LEP/SLC data with light superpartners and low $α_s(\mz^2)\simeq 0.112$ yields a better fit to the data than the Standard Model, giving a satisfactory description of the $R_b$ measurement, and a better fit to $A_{LR}$.
