A geometrical approach to the sharp Hardy inequality in Sobolev-Slobodeckiĭ spaces
Abstract: We give a partial negative answer to a question left open in a previous work by Brasco and the first and third-named authors concerning the sharp constant in the fractional Hardy inequality on convex sets. Our approach has a geometrical flavor and equivalently reformulates the sharp constant in the limit case $p=1$ as the Cheeger constant for the fractional perimeter and the Lebesgue measure with… ▽ More

Abstract: We prove several functional and geometric inequalities only assuming the linearity and a quantitative $\mathrm{L}^\infty$-to-Lipschitz smoothing of the heat semigroup in metric-measure spaces. Lipschitz approximation of almost $\mathbb G$-perimeter minimizing boundaries in plentiful groups
Abstract: We prove that the boundary of an almost minimizer of the intrinsic perimeter in a plentiful group can be approximated by intrinsic Lipschitz graphs. Plentiful groups are Carnot groups of step~$2$ whose center of the Lie algebra is generated by any co-dimension one horizontal subspace. On the monotonicity of non-local perimeter of convex bodies
Abstract: Under mild assumptions on the kernel $K\ge0$, the non-local $K$-perimeter $P_K$ satisfies the monotonicity property on nested convex bodies, i.e., if $A\subset B\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ are two convex bodies, then $P_K(A)\le P_K(B)$. Although the analogous result fails for general weighted anisotropic perimeters, a similar characterization holds for radially-weighted anisotropic densities.

On the monotonicity of perimeter of convex bodies
Abstract: Let $n\ge2$ and let $Φ\colon\mathbb{R}^n\to[0,\infty)$ be a positively $1$-homogeneous and convex function. Given two convex bodies $A\subset B$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, the monotonicity of anisotropic $Φ$-perimeters holds, i.e. $P_Φ(A)\le P_Φ(B)$. In this note, we prove a quantitative lower bound on the difference of the $Φ$-perimeters of $A$ and $B$ in terms of their Hausdorff distance.

Improved Lipschitz approximation of $H$-perimeter minimizing boundaries
Abstract: We prove two new approximation results of $H$-perimeter minimizing boundaries by means of intrinsic Lipschitz functions in the setting of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$ with $n\ge2$. The first one is an improvement of a result of Monti and is the natural reformulation in $\mathbb{H}^n$ of the classical Lipschitz approximation in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The second one is an adaptation of the approxima… ▽ More

Strong local optimality for a bang-bang-singular extremal: the fixed-free case
Abstract: In this paper we give sufficient conditions for a Pontryagin extremal trajectory, consisting of two bang arcs followed by a singular one, to be a strong local minimizer for a Mayer problem. The problem is defined on a manifold $M$ and the end-points constraints are of fixed-free type. We use a Hamiltonian approach and its connection with the second order conditions in the form of an accessory prob… ▽ More

Sobolev subspaces of nowhere bounded functions
Abstract: We prove that in any Sobolev space which is subcritical with respect to the Sobolev Embedding Theorem there exists a closed infinite dimensional linear subspace whose non zero elements are nowhere bounded functions. We also prove the existence of a closed infinite dimensional linear subspace whose non zero elements are nowhere $L^q$ functions for suitable values of $q$ larger than the Sobolev expo… ▽ More

Space-charge effects in high-energy photoemission
Abstract: Pump-and-probe photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) with femtosecond pulsed sources opens new perspectives in the investigation of the ultrafast dynamics of physical and chemical processes at the surfaces and interfaces of solids. Nevertheless, for very intense photon pulses a large number of photoelectrons are simultaneously emitted and their mutual Coulomb repulsion is sufficiently strong to signifi… ▽ More

A Hamiltonian approach to sufficiency in optimal control with minimal regularity conditions: Part I
Abstract: In this paper we develop a Hamiltonian approach to sufficient conditions in optimal control problems. We extend the known conditions for $C^2$ maximised Hamiltonians into two directions: on the one hand we explain the role of a super Hamiltonian (i.e. a Hamiltonian which is greater then or equal to the maximised one) on the other we develop the theory under some minimal regularity assumptions. The… ▽ More

Minimum-time strong optimality of a singular arc: the multi-input non involutive case
Abstract: We consider the minimum-time problem for a multi-input control-affine system, where we assume that the controlled vector fields generate a non-involutive distribution of constant dimension, and where we do not assume a-priori bounds for the controls. We use Hamiltonian methods to prove that the coercivity of a suitable second variation associated to a Pontryagin singular arc is sufficient to prove… ▽ More

Structural stability for bang--singular--bang extremals in the minimum time problem
Abstract: In this paper we study the structural stability of a bang-singular-bang extremal in the minimum time problem between fixed points. The dynamics is single-input and control-affine. On the nominal problem ($r = 0$), we assume the coercivity of a suitable second variation along the singular arc and regularity both of the bang arcs and of the junction points, thus obtaining the strict strong local o… ▽ More

Confidence Intervals for the Mutual Information
Abstract: By combining a bound on the absolute value of the difference of mutual information between two joint probablity distributions with a fixed variational distance, and a bound on the probability of a maximal deviation in variational distance between a true joint probability distribution and an empirical joint probability distribution, confidence intervals for the mutual information of two random vari… ▽ More

A Tight Lower Bound on the Mutual Information of a Binary and an Arbitrary Finite Random Variable in Dependence of the Variational Distance
Abstract: In this paper a numerical method is presented, which finds a lower bound for the mutual information between a binary and an arbitrary finite random variable with joint distributions that have a variational distance not greater than a known value to a known joint distribution. This lower bound can be applied to mutual information estimation with confidence intervals.

Abstract: The absence of sharp structures in the core-valence-valence Auger line shapes of partially filled bands has severely limited the use of electron spectroscopy in magnetic crystals and other correlated materials. Relevance of the EEL spectroscopy for in-situ studies of the growth mechanism of copper-phthalocyanine molecules on metal surfaces: Al(100)
Abstract: Reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in specular and off specular geometry has been employed to study the early stage of the copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) growth on Al (100) substrate. EEL spectroscopy has been a useful tool in order to study electronic structure of molecular films also in the submonolayer regime. The electronic structure of the first deposited layer of CuPc is str… ▽ More
