$t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ at NLO precision in a variable flavor number scheme
Abstract: Top-quark pair production in association with two b-jets is computed at next-to-leading order QCD precision, including effects of the b-quark mass, and matched to a $t\bar{t}$+jets simulation in a variable flavor number scheme. The Monte Carlo realization of this method, called fusing, consistently embeds the four-flavor calculation in a particle-level event generator. As a first phenomenological… ▽ More

Polarised cross sections for vector boson production with SHERPA
Abstract: Measurements of vector boson polarisation in vector boson production processes offer a powerful probe of the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism, scrutinising the Standard Model and new physics scenarios alike. A critical appraisal of NLO+PS matching methods
Abstract: In this publication, uncertainties in and differences between the MC@NLO and POWHEG methods for matching next-to-leading order QCD calculations with parton showers are discussed. Implementations of both algorithms within the event generator Sherpa and based on Catani-Seymour subtraction are employed to assess the impact on a representative selection of observables. In the case of MC@NLO a substant… ▽ More

Multi-jet merging with NLO matrix elements
Abstract: In the algorithm presented here, the ME+PS approach to merge samples of tree-level matrix elements into inclusive event samples is combined with the POWHEG method, which includes exact next-to-leading order matrix elements in the parton shower. The advantages of the method are discussed and the quality of its implementation in Sherpa is exemplified by results for e+e- annihilation into hadrons at… ▽ More

Next-to-leading order matrix elements and truncated showers
Abstract: An algorithm is presented that combines the ME+PS approach to merge sequences of tree-level matrix elements into inclusive event samples with the POWHEG method, which combines exact next-to-leading order matrix elements with parton showers. The quality of the approach and its implementation in Sherpa are exemplified by results for e+e- annihilation into hadrons at LEP, for Drell-Yan lepton-pair pr… ▽ More

NLO matrix elements and truncated showers
Abstract: In this publication, an algorithm is presented that combines the ME+PS approach to merge sequences of tree-level matrix elements into inclusive event samples with the POWHEG method, which combines exact next-to-leading order matrix element results with the parton shower. It was developed in parallel to the MENLOPS technique and has been implemented in the event generator Sherpa. The benefits of th… ▽ More

Automating the POWHEG method in Sherpa
Abstract: A new implementation of the POWHEG method into the Monte-Carlo event generator Sherpa is presented, focusing on processes with a simple colour structure. Results for a variety of processes, namely e+e- to hadrons, deep-inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering, hadroproduction of single vector bosons and of vector boson pairs as well as the production of Higgs bosons in gluon fusion serve as test cases… ▽ More

Rivet user manual
Abstract: This is the manual and user guide for the Rivet system for the validation and tuning of Monte Carlo event generators for high energy physics. As well as the core Rivet library, this manual describes the usage of the rivet program and the AGILe generator interface library. The depth and level of description is chosen for users of the system, starting with the basics of using validation code written… ▽ More

Hard photon production and matrix-element parton-shower merging
Abstract: We present a Monte-Carlo approach to prompt-photon production, where photons and QCD partons are treated democratically. The photon fragmentation function is modelled by an interleaved QCD+QED parton shower. This known technique is improved by including higher-order real-emission matrix elements. To this end, we extend a recently proposed algorithm for merging matrix elements and truncated parto… ▽ More

A posteriori inclusion of parton density functions in NLO QCD final-state calculations at hadron colliders: The APPLGRID Project
Abstract: A method to facilitate the consistent inclusion of cross-section measurements based on complex final-states from HERA, TEVATRON and the LHC in proton parton density function (PDF) fits has been developed. This can be used to increase the sensitivity of LHC data to deviations from Standard Model predictions. The method stores perturbative coefficients of NLO QCD calculations of final-state observ… ▽ More
