Abstract:

YbBiPt is a heavy-fermion compound possessing significant short-range antiferromagnetic correlations below a temperature of $T^{\textrm{*}}=0.7$ K, fragile antiferromagnetic order below $T_{\rm{N}}=0.4$ K, a Kondo temperature of $T_{\textrm{K}} \approx1$ K, and crystalline-electric-field splitting on the order of $E/k_{\textrm{B}}=1\,\textrm{-}\,10$ K. Whereas the compound has a face-centered-cubic lattice at ambient temperature, certain experimental data, particularly those from studies aimed at determining its crystalline-electric-field scheme, suggest that the lattice distorts at lower temperature. Here, we present results from high-resolution, high-energy x-ray diffraction experiments which show that, within our experimental resolution of $\approx6\,\textrm{-}\,10\times10^{-5}$ Å, no structural phase transition occurs between $T=1.5$ and $50$ K. In combination with results from dilatometry measurements, we further show that the compound's thermal expansion has a minimum at $\approx18$ K and a region of negative thermal expansion for $9<T<18$ K. Despite diffraction patterns taken at $1.6$ K which indicate that the lattice is face-centered cubic and that the Yb resides on a crystallographic site with cubic point symmetry, we demonstrate that the linear thermal expansion may be modeled using crystalline-electric-field level schemes appropriate for Yb$^{3+}$ residing on a site with either cubic or less than cubic point symmetry.

In addition, using this dilatometer, a simultaneous multi-axis dilation measurement has been done. This compact dilatometer has many advantages such as its ability to measure very small samples with lengths at sub-mm levels, low temperature and field dependence, ability to rotate, and works well irrespective of being in a changing liquid or gas environment (i.e. within a flow cryostat or mixing chamber).

In this paper, we present the systematic measurements of the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the thermodynamic and transport properties of the Yb-based heavy fermion YbPtBi for temperatures down to 0.02 K with magnetic fields up to 140 kOe to address the possible existence of a field-tuned quantum critical point. Measurements of magnetic field and temperature dependent resistivity, specific heat, thermal expansion, Hall effect, and thermoelectric power indicate that the AFM order can be suppressed by applied magnetic field of $H_{c}$ $\sim$ 4 kOe. In the $H-T$ phase diagram of YbPtBi, three regimes of its low temperature states emerges: (I) AFM state, characterized by spin density wave (SDW) like feature, which can be suppressed to $T$ = 0 by the relatively small magnetic field of $H_{c}$ $\sim$ 4\,kOe, (II) field induced anomalous state in which the electrical resistivity follows $Δρ(T) \propto T^{1.5}$ between $H_{c}$ and $\sim$ 8 kOe, and (III) Fermi liquid (FL) state in which $Δρ(T) \propto T^{2}$ for $H \geq$ 8 kOe. Regions I and II are separated at $T$ = 0 by what appears to be a quantum critical point. Whereas region III appears to be a FL associated with the hybridized 4$f$ states of Yb, region II may be a manifestation of a spin liquid state.

On the low-H side of this phase we find evidence for a first-order transition and suggest that YbAgGe at 4.5 T may be close to a quantum critical end point. On the high-H side our results are consistent with a second-order transition suppressed to a quantum critical point near 7.2 T. We discuss these results in light of global phase diagrams proposed for Kondo lattice systems.

Thermal expansion, or dilation, is closely related to the specific heat, and provides useful information regarding material properties. The accurate measurement of dilation in confined spaces coupled with other limiting experimental environments such as low temperatures and rapidly changing high magnetic fields requires a new sensitive millimeter size dilatometer that has little or no temperature and field dependence. We have designed an ultra compact dilatometer using an atomic force microscope (AFM) piezoresistive cantilever as the sensing element and demonstrated its versatility by studying the charge density waves (CDWs) in alpha uranium to high magnetic fields (up to 31 T). The performance of this piezoresistive dilatometer was comparable to that of a titanium capacitive dilatometer.

Using the Ehrenfest relation and heat capacity measurements, uniaxial pressure derivatives for long range magnetic ordering and charge density wave transition temperatures are evaluated and compared with the results of the direct measurements under hydrostatic pressure. In-plane and c-axis pressure have opposite effect on the phase transitions in these materials, with in-plane effects being significantly weaker. Quantum oscillations in magnetostriction were observed for the three pure compounds, with the possible detection of new frequencies in SmAgSb2 and LaAgSb2. The uniaxial (along the c-axis) pressure derivatives of the dominant extreme orbits (beta) were evaluated for YAgSb2 and LaAgSb2.

Thermal expansion data suggest that the x - T phase diagram may be more complex than initially reported. T_c data at elevated pressure can be scaled to the ambient pressure CuxTiSe2 phase diagram, however, significantly different scaling factors are needed to accommodate the literature data on the charge density wave transition suppression under pressure.

We report high magnetic field linear magnetostriction experiments on CeCoIn$_5$ single crystals. Two features are remarkable: (i) a sharp discontinuity in all the crystallographic axes associated with the upper superconducting critical field $B_{c2}$ that becomes less pronounced as the temperature increases; (ii) a distinctive second order-like feature observed only along the c-axis in the high field (10 T $ \lesssim B \leq B_{c2}$) low temperature ($T \lesssim$ 0.35 K) region. This second order transition is observed only when the magnetic field lies within 20$^o$ of the ab-planes and there is no signature of it above $B_{c2}$, which raises questions regarding its interpretation as a field induced magnetically ordered phase. Good agreement with previous results suggests that this anomaly is related to the transition to the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconducting state.

The $γ\to α$ isostructural transition in the Ce$_{0.9-x}$La$_x$Th$_{0.1}$ system is measured as a function of La alloying using specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, thermal expansivity/striction measurements. A line of discontinuous transitions, as indicated by the change in volume, decreases exponentially from 118 K to close to zero with increasing La doping and the transition changes from being first-order to continuous at a critical concentration $0.10 \leq x_c \leq 0.14$. At the tricritical point, the coefficient of the linear $T$ term in the specific heat $γ$ and the magnetic susceptibility start to increase rapidly near $x$ = 0.14 and gradually approaches large values at $x$=0.35 signifying that a heavy Fermi-liquid state evolves at large doping. Near $x_c$, the Wilson ratio, $R_W$, has a value of 3.0, signifying the presence of magnetic fluctuations. Also, the low-temperature resistivity shows that the character of the low-temperature Fermi-liquid is changing.

Uranium is the only known element that features a charge-density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. We report a comparison of the specific heat of single-crystal and polycrystalline $α$-uranium. \red{Away from the the phase transition the specific heat of the polycrystal is larger than that of the single crystal, and the aim of this paper is to explain this difference.} In the single crystal we find excess contributions to the heat capacity at 41 K, 38 K, and 23 K, with a Debye temperature, $Θ_D$ = 256 K. In the polycrystalline sample the heat capacity curve is thermally broadened ($Θ_D$ = 184 K), but no excess heat capacity was observed. The excess heat capacity, $C_φ$ (taken as the difference between the single crystal and polycrystal heat capacities) is well described in terms of collective-mode excitations above their respective pinning frequencies. This attribution is represented by a modified Debye spectrum with two cutoff frequencies, a pinning frequency, $ν_o$, for the pinned CDW (due to grain boundaries in the polycrystal), and a normal Debye acoustic frequency occurring in the single crystal. We explain the 50-year-old difference in Debye temperatures between heat capacity and ultrasonic measurements.

We have measured the electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect on several new single crystal samples and one polycrystalline sample of alpha-uranium. The residual resistivity ratios of these samples vary from 13 to 315. Matthiessen's law appears to hold above the onset of the charge density wave phase transitions that begin near 43 K, but not below this temperature. Sharp features at all three charge density wave transitions are observed and the effects of high magnetic fields on them are presented and discussed. The magnetoresistance is anisotropic, reaches 1000% at 2 K and 18 T, and does not exhibit Kohler scaling. The Hall coefficient is positive, independent of magnetic field, and slightly temperature dependent above about 40 K in agreement with earlier studies. Below 40 K the Hall coefficient changes sign as the temperature falls, varies with field, and becomes much more strongly negative at the lowest temperatures than has been reported. Some of our results suggest that a spin density wave may coexist with the charge density wave states. Superconductivity is observed in two of our samples, we argue that it is intrinsic to alpha-uranium and suggest that it is consistent with a two-band model. Several parameters characterizing the transport and superconductivity of alpha-uranium are estimated.
