Exactly solvable (spinless) lattice fermions with wide range interactions are constructed explicitly based on {\em exactly solvable stationary and reversible Markov chains} $\mathcal{K}^R$ reported a few years earlier by Odake and myself. The reversibility of $\mathcal{K}^R$ with the stationary distribution $π$ leads to a positive classical Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}^R$. The exact solvability of $\mathcal{H}^R$ warrants that of a spinless lattice fermion $c_x$, $c_x^\dagger$, $\mathcal{H}^R_f=\sum_{x,y\in\mathcal{X}}c_x^\dagger\mathcal{H}^R(x,y) c_y$ based on the principle advocated recently by myself. The reversible Markov chains $\mathcal{K}^R$ are constructed by convolutions of the orthogonality measures of the discrete orthogonal polynomials of Askey scheme. Several explicit examples of the fermion systems with wide range interactions are presented.

15 exactly solvable inhomogeneous (spinless) fermion systems on one-dimensional lattices are constructed explicitly based on the discrete orthogonal polynomials of Askey scheme, e.g. the Krawtchouk, Hahn, Racah, Meixner, $q$-Racah polynomials. The Schrödinger and Heisenberg equations are solved explicitly, as the entire set of the eigenvalues and eigenstates are known explicitly. The ground state two point correlation functions are derived explicitly. The multi point correlation functions are obtained by Wick's Theorem. Corresponding 15 exactly solvable XX spin systems are also displayed. They all have nearest neighbour interactions. The exact solvability of Schrödinger equation means that of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. This leads to 15 exactly solvable Birth and Death fermions and 15 Birth and Death spin models. These provide plenty of materials for calculating interesting quantities, e.g. entanglement entropy, etc.

A search for proton decay into $e^+/μ^+$ and a $η$ meson has been performed using data from a 0.373 Mton$\cdot$year exposure (6050.3 live days) of Super-Kamiokande. Compared to previous searches this work introduces an improved model of the intranuclear $η$ interaction cross section, resulting in a factor of two reduction in uncertainties from this source and $\sim$10\% increase in signal efficiency. No significant data excess was found above the expected number of atmospheric neutrino background events resulting in no indication of proton decay into either mode. Lower limits on the proton partial lifetime of $1.4\times\mathrm{10^{34}~years}$ for $p\rightarrow e^+η$ and $7.3\times\mathrm{10^{33}~years}$ for $p\rightarrow μ^+η$ at the 90$\%$ C.L. were set. These limits are around 1.5 times longer than our previous study and are the most stringent to date.

The main strategy is the analysis of the structure of Krylov subspace $\mathcal{K}_M(\mathcal{H},η)$ spanned by the multiple applications of the Liouville operator $\mathcal{L}$ defined by the commutator in terms of a Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}$, $\mathcal{L}:=[\mathcal{H},\cdot]$ acting on an operator $η$, $\mathcal{K}_M(\mathcal{H},η)=\text{span}\{η,\mathcal{L}η,\ldots,\mathcal{L}^{M-1}η\}$. For a given inner product $(\cdot,\cdot)$ of the operators, the orthonormal basis $\{\mathcal{O}_n\}$ is constructed from $\mathcal{O}_0=η/\sqrt{(η,η)}$ by Lanczos algorithm. The moments $μ_m=(\mathcal{O}_0,\mathcal{L}^m\mathcal{O}_0)$ are closely related to the important data $\{b_n\}$ called Lanczos coefficients. I present the exact and explicit expressions of the moments $\{μ_m\}$ for 16 quantum mechanical systems which are {\em exactly solvable both in the Schrödinger and Heisenberg pictures}. The operator $η$ is the variable of the eigenpolynomials. Among them six systems show a clear sign of `non-complexity' as vanishing higher Lanczos coefficients $b_m=0$, $m\ge3$.

An analysis of solar neutrino data from the fourth phase of Super-Kamiokande~(SK-IV) from October 2008 to May 2018 is performed and the results are presented. The observation time of the data set of SK-IV corresponds to $2970$~days and the total live time for all four phases is $5805$~days. For more precise solar neutrino measurements, several improvements are applied in this analysis: lowering the data acquisition threshold in May 2015, further reduction of the spallation background using neutron clustering events, precise energy reconstruction considering the time variation of the PMT gain. The observed number of solar neutrino events in $3.49$--$19.49$ MeV electron kinetic energy region during SK-IV is $65,443^{+390}_{-388}\,(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 925\,(\mathrm{syst.})$ events. Corresponding $\mathrm{^{8}B}$ solar neutrino flux is $(2.314 \pm 0.014\, \rm{(stat.)} \pm 0.040 \, \rm{(syst.)}) \times 10^{6}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$, assuming a pure electron-neutrino flavor component without neutrino oscillations. The flux combined with all SK phases up to SK-IV is $(2.336 \pm 0.011\, \rm{(stat.)} \pm 0.043 \, \rm{(syst.)}) \times 10^{6}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. Based on the neutrino oscillation analysis from all solar experiments, including the SK $5805$~days data set, the best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters are $\rm{sin^{2} θ_{12,\,solar}} = 0.306 \pm 0.013 $ and $Δm^{2}_{21,\,\mathrm{solar}} = (6.10^{+ 0.95}_{-0.81}) \times 10^{-5}~\rm{eV}^{2}$, with a deviation of about 1.5$σ$ from the $Δm^{2}_{21}$ parameter obtained by KamLAND. The best-fit neutrino oscillation parameters obtained from all solar experiments and KamLAND are $\sin^{2} θ_{12,\,\mathrm{global}} = 0.307 \pm 0.012 $ and $Δm^{2}_{21,\,\mathrm{global}} = (7.50^{+ 0.19}_{-0.18}) \times 10^{-5}~\rm{eV}^{2}$.

They are convolutions of an $n+1$-nomial distribution $W_n({\boldsymbol x};N)$ and an $n$-tuple of binomial distributions $\prod_{i}W_1(x_i;N)$. The one for the original Rahman polynomials is $K_n^{(1)}({\boldsymbol x},{\boldsymbol y};N) =\sum_{\boldsymbol z}W_n({\boldsymbol x}-{\boldsymbol z};N-\sum_{i}z_i) \prod_{i}W_1(z_i;y_i)$. The closely related one is \ $K_n^{(2)}({\boldsymbol x},{\boldsymbol y};N) =\sum_{\boldsymbol z}W_n({\boldsymbol x}-{\boldsymbol z};N-\sum_{i}y_i) \prod_{i}W_1(z_i;y_i)$. The original Markov chain was introduced and discussed by Hoare, Rahman and Grünbaum as a multivariable version of the known soluble single variable one. The new one is a generalisation of that of Odake and myself. The anticipated solubility of the model gave Rahman polynomials the prospect of the first multivariate hypergeometric function of Aomoto-Gelfand type connected with solvable dynamics. The promise is now realised. The $n^2$ system parameters $\{u_{i\,j}\}$ of the Rahman polynomials are completely determined. These $u_{i\,j}$'s are irrational functions of the original system parameters, the probabilities of the multinomial and binomial distributions.

The polynomials, depending on $n+1$ parameters ($\{c_i\}$ and $β$), satisfy the difference equation with the coefficients $B_j(x)$ and $D_j(x)$ $j=1,\ldots,n$, which is the straightforward generalisation of the difference equation governing the single variable Meixner polynomials. The polynomials are truncated $(n+1,2n+2)$ hypergeometric functions of Aomoto-Gelfand. The polynomials and the derivation are very similar to those of the multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials reported recently.

We report on the results of our simultaneous observations of three large stellar flares with soft X-rays (SXRs) and an H$\mathrmα$ emission line from two binary systems of RS CVn type. The energies released in the X-ray and H$\mathrmα$ emissions during the flares were $10^{36}$--$10^{38}$ and $10^{35}$--$10^{37}$ erg, respectively. It renders the set of the observations as the first successful simultaneous X-ray/H$\mathrmα$ observations of the stellar flares with energies above $10^{35}$ erg; although the coverage of the H$\mathrmα$ observations of the stellar flares with energies above $10^{35}$ erg; although the coverage of the H$\mathrmα$ observations was limited, with $\sim$10\% of the $e$-folding time in the decay phase of the flares, that of the SXR ones was complete. Combining the obtained physical parameters and those in literature for solar and stellar flares, we obtained a good proportional relation between the emitted energies of X-ray and H$\mathrmα$ emissions for a flare energy range of $10^{29}$--$10^{38}$ erg. The ratio of the H$\mathrmα$-line to bolometric X-ray emissions was $\sim$0.1, where the latter was estimated by converting the observed SXR emission to that in the 0.1--100 keV band according to the best-fitting thin thermal model. We also found that the $e$-folding times of the SXR and H$\mathrmα$ light curves in the decaying phase of a flare are in agreement for a time range of $1$--$10^4$~s. Even very large stellar flares with energies of six orders of magnitude larger than the most energetic solar flares follow the same scaling relationships with solar and much less energetic stellar flares. This fact suggests that their physical parameters can be estimated on the basis of the known physics of solar and stellar flares.

The difference equations specified by the birth/death rates have polynomial eigenvectors which form the complete set of orthogonal multivariate Hahn polynomials. Although the degree one eigenpolynomials are easy to derive, the complete hypergeometric expressions are yet to be determined. In a certain limit, these Hahn polynomials reduce to the multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials. The known limiting procedures to the Meixner and Charlier polynomials produce trivial results of the direct products of the single variable polynomials.

Exploiting the resolution high enough for the low-mass galaxies, we derive gas dynamics with the H$α$ lines by the fitting of 3-dimensional disk models. We obtain an average maximum rotation velocity ($v_\mathrm{rot}$) of $15\pm3~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ and an average intrinsic velocity dispersion ($σ_0$) of $27\pm10~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ for 15 spatially resolved EMPGs out of the 33 EMPGs, and find that all of the 15 EMPGs have $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0<1$ suggesting dispersion dominated systems. There is a clear decreasing trend of $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0$ with the decreasing stellar mass and metallicity. We derive the gas mass fraction ($f_\mathrm{gas}$) for all of the 33 EMPGs, and find no clear dependence on stellar mass and metallicity. These $v_\mathrm{rot}/σ_0$ and $f_\mathrm{gas}$ trends should be compared with young high-$z$ galaxies observed by the forthcoming JWST IFS programs to understand the physical origins of the EMPGs in the local universe.

In this paper, we introduce stochastic simulated quantum annealing (SSQA) for large-scale combinatorial optimization problems. SSQA is designed based on stochastic computing and quantum Monte Carlo, which can simulate quantum annealing (QA) by using multiple replicas of spins (probabilistic bits) in classical computing. The use of stochastic computing leads to an efficient parallel spin-state update algorithm, enabling quick search for a solution around the global minimum energy. Therefore, SSQA realizes quantum-like annealing for large-scale problems and can handle fully connected models in combinatorial optimization, unlike QA. The proposed method is evaluated in MATLAB on graph isomorphism problems, which are typical combinatorial optimization problems. The proposed method achieves a convergence speed an order of magnitude faster than a conventional stochastic simulaated annealing method. Additionally, it can handle a 100-times larger problem size compared to QA and a 25-times larger problem size compared to a traditional SA method, respectively, for similar convergence probabilities.

A coinless quantisation procedure of general reversible Markov chains on graphs is presented. A quantum Hamiltonian H is obtained by a similarity transformation of the fundamental transition probability matrix K in terms of the square root of the reversible distribution. The evolution of the classical and quantum Markov chains are described by the solutions of the eigenvalue problem of the quantum Hamiltonian H. About twenty plus exactly solvable Markov chains based on the hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials of Askey scheme, derived by Odake-Sasaki, would provide a good window for scrutinising the quantum/classical contrast of Markov chains. Among them five explicit examples, related to the Krawtchouk, Hahn, q-Hahn, Charlier and Meixner, are demonstrated to illustrate the actual calculations.

A coinless quantisation procedure of continuous and discrete time Birth and Death (BD) processes is presented. The quantum Hamiltonian H is derived by similarity transforming the matrix L describing the BD equation in terms of the square root of the stationary (reversible) distribution. The quantum and classical systems share the entire eigenvalues and the eigenvectors are related one to one. When the birth rate B(x) and the death rate D(x) are chosen to be the coefficients of the difference equation governing the orthogonal polynomials of Askey scheme, the quantum system is exactly solvable. The eigenvectors are the orthogonal polynomials themselves and the eigenvalues are given analytically. Many examples are periodic since their eigenvalues are all integers, or all integers for integer parameters. The situation is very similar to the exactly solvable one dimensional quantum mechanical systems. These exactly solvable Markov chains contain many adjustable free parameters which could be helpful for various simulation purposes.

A Rayleigh-type surface acoustic wave (SAW) is used in various fields as classical and quantum information carriers because of its surface localization, high electrical controllability, and low propagation loss. Coupling and hybridization between the SAW and other physical systems such as magnetization, electron charge, and electron spin are the recent focuses in phononics and spintronics. A precise measurement of the surface wave amplitude is often necessary to discuss the coupling strengths. However, there are only a few such measurement techniques and they generally require a rather complex analysis. Here we develop and demonstrate a straightforward measurement technique that can quantitatively characterize the SAW. The technique optically detects the surface waving due to the coherently driven SAW by the optical path modulation. Furthermore, when the measurement system operates in the shot-noise-limited regime, the surface slope and displacement at the optical spot can be deduced from the optical path modulation signal. Our demonstrated technique will be an important tool for SAW-related research.

We construct a general theory of $Z_2$ topological phase transitions in two-dimensional systems with time-reversal symmetry. We investigate the possibilities of $Z_2$ topological phase transitions at band inversions at all high-symmetry points in $k$-space in all the 80 layer groups. We exclude the layer groups with inversion symmetry because the $Z_2$ topological phase transition is known to be associated with band inversions with an exchange of parities. Among the other layer groups, we find 21 layer groups with insulator-to-insulator transitions with band inversion, and this problem is finally reduced to five point groups $C_3, C_4, C_6, S_4$, and $C_{3h}$. We show how the change of the $Z_2$ topological invariant at a band inversion is entirely determined by the irreps of occupied and unoccupied bands at the high-symmetry point. For example, in the case of $C_3$, we show that the $Z_2$ topological invariants change whenever the band inversion occurs between two Kramers pairs whose $C_3$ eigenvalues are $\{e^{πi / 3}, e^{-πi / 3}\}$ and $\{-1, -1\}$. These results are not included in the theory of symmetry-based indicators or topological quantum chemistry.

Neutrinos associated with solar flares (solar-flare neutrinos) provide information on particle acceleration mechanisms during the impulsive phase of solar flares. We searched using the Super-Kamiokande detector for neutrinos from solar flares that occurred during solar cycles $23$ and $24$, including the largest solar flare (X28.0) on November 4th, 2003. In order to minimize the background rate we searched for neutrino interactions within narrow time windows coincident with $γ$-rays and soft X-rays recorded by satellites. In addition, we performed the first attempt to search for solar-flare neutrinos from solar flares on the invisible side of the Sun by using the emission time of coronal mass ejections (CMEs). By selecting twenty powerful solar flares above X5.0 on the visible side and eight CMEs whose emission speed exceeds $2000$ $\mathrm{km \, s^{-1}}$ on the invisible side from 1996 to 2018, we found two (six) neutrino events coincident with solar flares occurring on the visible (invisible) side of the Sun, with a typical background rate of $0.10$ ($0.62$) events per flare in the MeV-GeV energy range. No significant solar-flare neutrino signal above the estimated background rate was observed. As a result we set the following upper limit on neutrino fluence at the Earth $\mathitΦ<1.1\times10^{6}$ $\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level for the largest solar flare. The resulting fluence limits allow us to constrain some of the theoretical models for solar-flare neutrino emission.

Scintillators have long been known as radiation detectors and are still used in various applications. Recently, scintillators containing $^6$Li have been developed as neutron detectors and have attracted attention. $^6$Li absorbs thermal neutrons and emits $α$+$^3$H, which is promising as a neutron detector if it can be separated from background gamma rays. We have been developing Eu:LiI-CaI$_2$-based scintillators (Eu:LiCaI) for this purpose. In scintillator detectors, waveform information is generally used to distinguish particles such as neutrons and gamma rays. We propose a new particle identification method using emission wavelengths information. In this study, experiments were conducted using Eu:LiCaI crystals, multi-pixel photon counter optical sensors, and long-wavelength cut filters to verify the proposed method. The results of irradiating a $^{252}$Cf neutron source and a $^{60}$Co gamma-ray source indicate that there is a particle dependence of the output signal ratio between with and without filters. This means that different types of radiation particles have different emission wavelengths. This is the first demonstration of a wavelength-based particle identification method.

By putting two harmonic oscillator potential $x^2$ side by side with a separation $2d$, two exactly solvable piecewise analytic quantum systems with a free parameter $d>0$ are obtained. Due to the mirror symmetry, their eigenvalues $E$ for the even and odd parity sectors are determined exactly as the zeros of certain combinations of the confluent hypergeometric function ${}_1F_1$ of $d$ and $E$, which are common to $V_{D}$ and $V_{S}$ but in two different branches. The eigenfunctions are the piecewise square integrable combinations of ${}_1F_1$, the so called $U$ functions. By comparing the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for various values of the separation $d$, vivid pictures unfold showing the tunneling effects between the two wells.

A new interpretation and applications of the ``Diophantine'' and factorisation properties of {\em finite} orthogonal polynomials in the Askey scheme are explored. The corresponding twelve polynomials are the ($q$-)Racah, (dual, $q$-)Hahn, Krawtchouk and five types of $q$-Krawtchouk. These ($q$-)hypergeometric polynomials, defined only for the degrees of $0,1,\ldots,N$, constitute the main part of the eigenvectors of $N+1$-dimensional tri-diagonal real symmetric matrices, which correspond to the difference equations governing the polynomials. The {\em monic} versions of these polynomials all exhibit the ``Diophantine'' and factorisation properties at higher degrees than $N$. This simply means that these higher degree polynomials are zero-norm ``eigenvectors'' of the $N+1$-dimensional tri-diagonal real symmetric matrices. A new type of multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials belonging to these twelve polynomials could be introduced by using the higher degree polynomials as the seed solutions of the multiple Darboux transformations for the corresponding matrix eigenvalue problems. The shape-invariance properties of the simplest type of the multi-indexed polynomials are demonstrated. The explicit transformation formulas are presented.

We present kinematics of 6 local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) with low metallicities ($0.016-0.098\ Z_{\odot}$) and low stellar masses ($10^{4.7}-10^{7.6} M_{\odot}$). Taking deep medium-high resolution ($R\sim7500$) integral-field spectra with 8.2-m Subaru, we resolve the small inner velocity gradients and dispersions of the EMPGs with H$α$ emission. Carefully masking out sub-structures originated by inflow and/or outflow, we fit 3-dimensional disk models to the observed H$α$ flux, velocity, and velocity-dispersion maps. All the EMPGs show rotational velocities ($v_{\rm rot}$) of 5--23 km s$^{-1}$ smaller than the velocity dispersions ($σ_{0}$) of 17--31 km s$^{-1}$, indicating dispersion-dominated ($v_{\rm rot}/σ_{0}=0.29-0.80<1$) systems affected by inflow and/or outflow. Except for two EMPGs with large uncertainties, we find that the EMPGs have very large gas-mass fractions of $f_{\rm gas}\simeq 0.9-1.0$. Comparing our results with other H$α$ kinematics studies, we find that $v_{\rm rot}/σ_{0}$ decreases and $f_{\rm gas}$ increases with decreasing metallicity, decreasing stellar mass, and increasing specific star-formation rate. We also find that simulated high-$z$ ($z\sim 7$) forming galaxies have gas fractions and dynamics similar to the observed EMPGs. Our EMPG observations and the simulations suggest that primordial galaxies are gas-rich dispersion-dominated systems, which would be identified by the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) observations at $z\sim 7$.

The present work focuses on detecting more distant supernovae whose event rate may be too small to trigger in real time, but may be identified using an offline approach. The analysis of data collected from 2008 to 2018 found no evidence of distant supernovae bursts. This establishes an upper limit of 0.29 year$^{-1}$ on the rate of core-collapse supernovae out to 100 kpc at 90% C.L.. For supernovae that fail to explode and collapse directly to black holes the limit reaches to 300 kpc.

In 2020, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment moved to a new stage (SK-Gd) in which gadolinium (Gd) sulfate octahydrate was added to the water in the detector, enhancing the efficiency to detect thermal neutrons and consequently improving the sensitivity to low energy electron anti-neutrinos from inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions. SK-Gd has the potential to provide early alerts of incipient core-collapse supernovae through detection of electron anti-neutrinos from thermal and nuclear processes responsible for the cooling of massive stars before the gravitational collapse of their cores. These pre-supernova neutrinos emitted during the silicon burning phase can exceed the energy threshold for IBD reactions. We present the sensitivity of SK-Gd to pre-supernova stars and the techniques used for the development of a pre-supernova alarm based on the detection of these neutrinos in SK, as well as prospects for future SK-Gd phases with higher concentrations of Gd. For the current SK-Gd phase, high-confidence alerts for Betelgeuse could be issued up to nine hours in advance of the core-collapse itself.

Radioactivity induced by cosmic muon spallation is a dominant source of backgrounds for $\mathcal{O}(10)~$MeV neutrino interactions in water Cherenkov detectors. In particular, it is crucial to reduce backgrounds to measure the solar neutrino spectrum and find neutrino interactions from distant supernovae. In this paper we introduce new techniques to locate muon-induced hadronic showers and efficiently reject spallation backgrounds. Applying these techniques to the solar neutrino analysis with an exposure of $2790\times22.5$~kton.day increases the signal efficiency by $12.6\%$, approximately corresponding to an additional year of detector running. Furthermore, we present the first spallation simulation at SK, where we model hadronic interactions using FLUKA. The agreement between the isotope yields and shower pattern in this simulation and in the data gives confidence in the accuracy of this simulation, and thus opens the door to use it to optimize muon spallation removal in new data with gadolinium-enhanced neutron capture detection.

A new search for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) flux has been conducted at Super-Kamiokande (SK), with a $22.5\times2970$-kton$\cdot$day exposure from its fourth operational phase IV. The new analysis improves on the existing background reduction techniques and systematic uncertainties and takes advantage of an improved neutron tagging algorithm to lower the energy threshold compared to the previous phases of SK. This allows for setting the world's most stringent upper limit on the extraterrestrial $\barν_e$ flux, for neutrino energies below 31.3 MeV. The SK-IV results are combined with the ones from the first three phases of SK to perform a joint analysis using $22.5\times5823$ kton$\cdot$days of data. This analysis has the world's best sensitivity to the DSNB $\barν_e$ flux, comparable to the predictions from various models. For neutrino energies larger than 17.3 MeV, the new combined $90\%$ C.L. upper limits on the DSNB $\barν_e$ flux lie around $2.7$ cm$^{-2}$$\cdot$$\text{sec}^{-1}$, strongly disfavoring the most optimistic predictions. Finally, potentialities of the gadolinium phase of SK and the future Hyper-Kamiokande experiment are discussed.

In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m$^3$/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m$^3$/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be $115\pm1$ $μ$s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of $111\pm2$ ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. This paper describes changes made to the water circulation system for this detector upgrade, the Gd loading procedure, detector commissioning, and the first neutron calibration measurements in SK-Gd.

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) is utilized in diverse fields ranging from physics, engineering, to biology, for transducing, sensing and processing various signals. Optical measurement of SAW provides valuable information since the amplitude and the phase of the displacement field can be measured locally with the resolution limited by the spot size of the optical beam. So far, optical measurement techniques rely on modulation of optical path, phase, or diffraction associated with SAW. Here, we demonstrate that SAW can be measured with an optical polarimeter. We show that the slope of the periodically tilting surface due to the coherently driven SAW is translated into the angle of polarization rotation, which can be straightforwardly calibrated when polarimeters work in the shot-noise-limited regime. The polarimetric measurement of SAW is thus beneficial for quantitative studies of SAW-based technologies.

Abstract:

Both low-energy ($7-100$ MeV) and high-energy ($0.1-10^5$ GeV) samples were analyzed in order to cover a very wide neutrino spectrum. Follow-ups of 36 (out of 39) gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-2 catalog were examined; no significant excess above the background was observed, with 10 (24) observed neutrinos compared with 4.8 (25.0) expected events in the high-energy (low-energy) samples. A statistical approach was used to compute the significance of potential coincidences. For each observation, p-values were estimated using neutrino direction and LVC sky map ; the most significant event (GW190602_175927) is associated with a post-trial p-value of $7.8\%$ ($1.4σ$). Additionally, flux limits were computed independently for each sample and by combining the samples. The energy emitted as neutrinos by the identified gravitational wave sources was constrained, both for given flavors and for all-flavors assuming equipartition between the different flavors, independently for each trigger and by combining sources of the same nature.

We report that the RS CVn-type star GT Mus (HR 4492, HD 101379 + HD 101380) was the most active star in the X-ray sky in the last decade in terms of the scale of recurrent energetic flares. We detected 11 flares from GT Mus in 8 yr of observations with Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) from 2009 August to 2017 August. The detected flare peak luminosities were 1-4 $\times$ 10$^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the 2.0-20.0 keV band for its distance of 109.6 pc. Our timing analysis showed long durations ($τ_{\rm r} + τ_{\rm d}$) of 2-6 days with long decay times ($τ_{\rm d}$) of 1-4 days. The released energies during the decay phases of the flares in the 0.1-100 keV band ranged 1-11 $\times$ 10$^{38}$ erg, which are at the upper end of the observed stellar flare. The released energies during whole duration time ranged 2-13 $\times$ 10$^{38}$ erg in the same band. We carried out X-ray follow-up observations for one of the 11 flares with Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) on 2017 July 18 and found that the flare cooled quasi-statically. On the basis of a quasi-static cooling model, the flare loop length is derived to be 4 $\times$ 10$^{12}$ cm (or 60 R$_{\odot}$). The electron density is derived to be 1 $\times$ 10$^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$, which is consistent with the typical value of solar and stellar flares (10$^{10-13}$ cm$^{-3}$). The ratio of the cooling timescales between radiative cooling ($τ_{\rm rad}$) and conductive cooling ($τ_{\rm cond}$) is estimated to be $τ_{\rm rad}$ $\sim$ 0.1$τ_{\rm cond}$ from the temperature; thus radiative cooling was dominant in this flare.

Due to a very low production rate of electron anti-neutrinos ($\barν_e$) via nuclear fusion in the Sun, a flux of solar $\barν_e$ is unexpected. An appearance of $\barν_e$ in solar neutrino flux opens a new window for the new physics beyond the standard model. In particular, a spin-flavor precession process is expected to convert an electron neutrino into an electron anti-neutrino (${ν_e\to\barν_e}$) when neutrino has a finite magnetic moment. In this work, we have searched for solar $\barν_e$ in the Super-Kamiokande experiment, using neutron tagging to identify their inverse beta decay signature. We identified 78 $\barν_e$ candidates for neutrino energies of 9.3 to 17.3 MeV in 2970.1 live days with a fiducial volume of 22.5 kiloton water (183.0 kton$\cdot$year exposure). The energy spectrum has been consistent with background predictions and we thus derived a 90% confidence level upper limit of ${4.7\times10^{-4}}$ on the $ν_e\to\barν_e$ conversion probability in the Sun. We used this result to evaluate the sensitivity of future experiments, notably the Super-Kamiokande Gadolinium (SK-Gd) upgrade.

The angular momentum interconversion between electron spin and other type of angular momenta is useful to develop new spintronic functionalities. The conversions from the angular momentum of photon and mechanical rotation to ferromagnetic spin moment have been well studied. While the recent studies theoretically suggested circular vibration of atoms works as angular momentum of phonon, the direct experimental demonstration of conversion to spin moments remains to be performed. Here we demonstrate that the phonon angular momentum of surface acoustic wave can control the magnetization of a ferromagnetic Ni film by means of the phononic-to-electronic conversion of angular momentum in Ni/LiNbO$_3$ hybrid device. This result clearly shows the phonon angular momentum is useful to further fictionalize spintronic devices.

Growing demand for high-speed Ising-computing-specific hardware has prompted a need for determining how the accuracy depends on a hardware implementation with physically limited resources. For instance, in digital hardware such as field-programmable gate arrays, as the number of bits representing the coupling strength is reduced, the density of integrated Ising spins and the speed of computing can be increased while the calculation accuracy becomes lower. To optimize the accuracy-efficiency trade-off, we have to estimate the change in performance of the Ising computing machine depending on the number of bits representing the coupling strength. In this study, we tackle this issue by focusing on the Hopfield model with discrete coupling. The Hopfield model is a canonical Ising computing model. Previous studies have analyzed the effect of a few nonlinear functions (e.g. sign) for mapping the coupling strength on the Hopfield model with statistical mechanics methods, but not the effect of discretization of the coupling strength in detail. Here, we derived the order parameter equations of the Hopfield model with discrete coupling by using the replica method and clarified the relationship between the number of bits representing the coupling strength and the critical memory capacity. In this paper, we used the replica method for the Hopfield model with general nonlinear coupling (Sompolinsky (1986)) to analyze the model with a multi-bit discrete coupling strength, and we novelly derived the de Almeida-Thouless line of the model with general nonlinear coupling.

We report multi-wavelength monitoring observations of an M-dwarf flare star AD Leonis with Seimei Telescope (6150--7930 Å), SCAT (Spectroscopic Chuo-university Astronomical Telescope; 3700--7500 Å), NICER (Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer; 0.2--12.0 keV), and collaborations of OISTER (Optical and Infrared Synergetic Telescopes for Education and Research) program. Twelve flares are detected in total which include ten H$α$, four X-ray, and four optical-continuum flares; one of them is a superflare with the total energy of $\sim$ 2.0$\times$10$^{33}$ erg. We found that (1) during the superflare, the H$α$ emission line full width at 1/8 maximum dramatically increases to 14 Å from 8 Å in the low-resolution spectra (R$\sim$ 2000) accompanied with the large white-light flares, (2) some weak H$α$/X-ray flares are not accompanied with white-light emissions, and (3) the non-flaring emissions show clear rotational modulations in X-ray and H$α$ intensity in the same phase. To understand these observational features, one-dimensional hydrodynamic flare simulations are performed by using the RADYN code. As a result of simulations, we found the simulated H$α$ line profiles with hard and high-energy non-thermal electron beams are consistent with that of the initial phase line profiles of the superflares, while those with more soft- and/or weak-energy beam are consistent with those in decay phases, indicating the changes in the energy fluxes injected to the lower atmosphere. Also, we found that the relation between optical continuum and H$α$ intensity is nonlinear, which can be one cause of the non-white-light flares. The flare energy budget exhibits diversity in the observations and models, and more observations of stellar flares are necessary for constraining the occurrence of various emission line phenomena in stellar flares.

We develop a convenient description by grid diagrams which are polytopes determined by mass parameters of the model. To illustrate the validity of our method, we work out non-planar domain wall networks for lower $N$ in $3+1$ dimensions. In general, the networks can have compact vacuum bubbles, which are finite vacuum regions surrounded by domain walls, when the polytopes of the grid diagrams have inner vertices, and the size of bubbles can be controlled by moduli parameters. We also construct domain wall networks with bubbles in the shapes of the Platonic, Archimedean, Catalan, and Kepler-Poinsot solids.

In $D=2$, there are three vacua and three domain walls meeting at a junction point, in which the conventional topological charges $Y$ and $Z$ exist for the BPS domain wall junctions and the BPS domain walls, respectively as known before. In $D=3$, there are four vacua, six domain walls, four junction lines on which three domain walls meet, and one junction point on which all the six domain walls meet. We define a new topological charge $X$ for the junction point in addition to the conventional topological charges $Y$ and $Z$. In general dimensions, we find that the configuration expressed in the $D$-dimensional real space is dual to a regular $D$-simplex in the $D$-dimensional internal space and that a $d$-dimensional subsimplex of the regular $D$-simplex corresponds to a $(D-d)$-dimensional intersection. Topological charges are generalized to the level-$d$ wall charge $W_d$ for the $d$-dimensional subsimplexes.

The discrete orthogonality relations hold for all the orthogonal polynomials obeying three term recurrence relations. We show that they also hold for multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials, which are new orthogonal polynomials obtained by deforming these classical orthogonal polynomials. The discrete orthogonality relations could be considered as more encompassing characterisation of orthogonal polynomials than the three term recurrence relations. As the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials start at a positive degree $\ell_{\mathcal D}\ge1$, the three term recurrence relations are broken. The extra $\ell_{\mathcal D}$ `lower degree polynomials', which are necessary for the discrete orthogonality relations, are identified. The corresponding Christoffel numbers are determined. The main results are obtained by the blow-up analysis of the second order differential operators governing the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials around the zeros of these polynomials at a degree $\ell_{\mathcal D}+\mathcal{N}$. %changed The discrete orthogonality relations are shown to hold for another group of `new' orthogonal polynomials called Krein-Adler polynomials based on the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials.

The quantum mechanical system of this piecewise analytic potential has infinitely many discrete eigenstates with the corresponding eigenfunctions given by the Whittaker W function. The eigenvalues are the square of the zeros of the Whittaker function $W_{k,ν}(x)$ and its linear combination with $W'_{k,ν}(x)$ as a function of $ν$ with fixed $k$ and $x$. Multi-indexed Meixner and Little $q$-Jacobi (Laguerre) Polynomials
Authors:

Abstract:
As the fourth stage of the project multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, we present the multi-indexed Meixner and little $q$-Jacobi (Laguerre) polynomials in the framework of `discrete quantum mechanics' with real shifts defined on the semi-infinite lattice in one dimension. They are obtained, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials reported earlier, from the quantum…

They are obtained, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials reported earlier, from the quantum mechanical systems corresponding to the original orthogonal polynomials by multiple application of the discrete analogue of the Darboux transformations or the Crum-Krein-Adler deletion of virtual state vectors. The virtual state vectors are the solutions of the matrix Schrödinger equation on all the lattice points having negative energies and infinite norm. This is in good contrast to the ($q$-)Racah systems defined on a finite lattice, in which the `virtual state' vectors satisfy the matrix Schrödinger equation except for one of the two boundary points.

Abstract:
We have investigated microwave nonreciprocity in a noncentro-symmetric magnet CuB2O4. We simultaneously observed differently originated nonreciprocities; the classical magnetic dipolar effect and the magneto-chiral (MCh) effect. By rotating magnetic field in a tetragonal plane, we clearly unveil qualitative difference between them. The MCh effect signal reveals chiral transitions from one enantiom…

The MCh effect signal reveals chiral transitions from one enantiomer to the other via intermediate achiral state. We show magnetoelectric effect plays an essential role for the emergence of microwave MCh effect.

One-dimensional Schrödinger equation with non-analytic potential $V(x)= -g^2\exp (-|x|)$ and its exact Bessel-function solvability
Authors:
Ryu Sasaki,
Miloslav Znojil
Abstract:
Exact solvability (ES) of one-dimensional quantum potentials $V(x)$ is a vague concept. We propose that beyond its most conventional range the ES status should be attributed also to many less common interaction models for which the wave functions remain piecewise proportional to special functions. The claim is supported by constructive analysis of a toy model $V(x)= -g^2\exp (-|x|)$. The detailed…

We propose that beyond its most conventional range the ES status should be attributed also to many less common interaction models for which the wave functions remain piecewise proportional to special functions. The claim is supported by constructive analysis of a toy model $V(x)= -g^2\exp (-|x|)$. The detailed description of the related bound-state and scattering solutions of Schrödinger equation is provided in terms of Bessel functions which are properly matched in the origin.
