We revisit the small field double-well inflationary model and investigate its observational viability in light of the current Cosmic Microwave Background data. In particular, considering scenarios with minimal and nonminimal coupling between the inflaton field and the Ricci scalar, we perform a Monte Carlo Markov chain analysis to probe the model's parameter space. We also investigate the consequences of the cosmological results in the canonical type-I seesaw mechanism context and obtain constraints on the vacuum expectation value of the inflaton field, together with the amplitude of the coupling to gravity in the nonminimal case. We employ a Bayesian procedure to compare the model's predictions with the Starobinsky inflationary scenario and find a strong statistical preference for the latter against the minimal and nonminimal coupled double-well scenario.

In the warm inflation scenario, the early cosmic acceleration is driven by the inflaton coupled to thermal fields, decaying into radiation and leaving a hot universe populated by relativistic particles after the end of inflation. The interaction is usually modeled by a dissipation coefficient $Υ$ that contains the microphysics of the model. In this work, we adopt a well-motivated potential $V(φ)=\fracλ{4}φ^4$ and constrain a variety of $Υ$ parameterizations by using updated Cosmic Microwave Background data from the \textit{Planck} and \textit{BICEP/Keck Array} collaborations. We also use a Bayesian statistical criterion to compare the observational viability of these models. Our results show a significant improvement in the constraints over past results reported in the literature and also that some of these warm inflation models can be competitive compared to Starobinsky inflation.

Natural inflation is a well-motivated model for the early universe in which an inflaton potential of the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone form, $V(φ) = Λ^4[1 + \cos{(φ/f)}]$, can naturally drive a cosmic accelerated epoch. This paper investigates the observational viability of the minimally and non-minimally coupled natural inflation scenarios in light of current Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations. We find that a small and negative coupling of the field with gravity can alleviate the well-known observational discrepancies of the minimally coupled model. We perform a Monte Carlo Markov Chain analysis of the Planck 2018 CMB and BICEP/Keck Array B-mode polarization data to estimate how strong the coupling $ξ$ should be to achieve concordance with data. We also briefly discuss the impact of these results on the physical interpretation of the natural inflation scenario.

We investigate the impact of a non-minimal coupling of the scalar field with gravity in inflationary models, where a small coupling is allowed. As a concrete example, we consider the Witten-O'Raifeartaigh model, where, in line with other models, the presence of a coupling strength $ξ$ can recover concordance of the inflationary parameters with cosmic microwave background (CMB) constraints, provided by the Planck collaboration. We go beyond the slow-roll regime and investigate the impact in the description of CMB anisotropies by performing a statistical analysis of the model with the most recent Planck + Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) data to seek for any indication of a non-zero coupling by data within the model. We find that not only the presence of a non-minimal coupling is seen, but the model has a slight statistical preference when compared with the standard $Λ$CDM one. We also discuss the results on the minimally-coupled model, which in general, favours the simple setting where the associated mass scale is equal to the reduced Planck mass $M_p$ while being, in general, disfavored concerning the standard model.

The ThIrSi superconductor, with $T_c = 6.5$ K, is expected to show unusual features in view of its noncentrosymmetric structure and the presence of heavy elements featuring a sizable spin-orbit coupling. Here, we report a comprehensive study of its electronic properties by means of local-probe techniques: muon-spin rotation and relaxation ({\textmu}SR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Both the superfluid density $ρ_\mathrm{sc}(T)$ (determined via transverse-field {\textmu}SR) and the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}(T)$ (determined via NMR) suggest a nodeless superconductivity. Furthermore, the absence of spontaneous magnetic fields below $T_c$, as evinced from zero-field {\textmu}SR measurements, indicates a preserved time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state of ThIrSi. Temperature-dependent upper critical fields as well as field-dependent superconducting muon-spin relaxations suggest the presence of multiple superconducting gaps in ThIrSi.

We establish constraints on $f(T)$ gravity by considering the possibility of a scenario that supports a phantom crossing of the equation of state parameter $ω_{DE}$. After determining the viable parameter space of the model, while checking the impact on the background dynamics, we perform an analysis to obtain constraints on cosmological parameters and determine the viability of this scenario. To this end, we use combined data sets from cosmic chronometers (CC), baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO), redshift space distortion (RSD) and Type Ia supernovae (SN) measurements from the latest Pantheon$+$ set, in which the impact on the absolute magnitude due to the change of the effective gravitational constant is also considered. It is found that a state where a phantom crossing of $ω_{DE}$ happens is favored by data, and the $f(T)$ model is competitive with the $Λ$CDM one by statistical criteria, such as AIC and BIC. Additionally, we find evidence of the Hubble tension being alleviated within the $f(T)$ model, at the same time that it does not worsen the growth one, indicating a possibility of the present scenario as an option to address the current cosmic tensions.

We investigate theoretical and observational aspects of a warm inflation scenario driven by the $β$-exponential potential, which generalizes the well-known power law inflation. In such a scenario, the decay of the inflaton field into radiation happens during the inflationary phase. In our study, we consider a dissipation coefficient ($Γ$) with cubic dependence on the temperature ($T$) and investigate the consequences in the inflationary dynamics, focusing on the impact on the spectral index $n_s$, its running $n_{run}$ and tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. We find it possible to realize inflation in agreement with current cosmic microwave background data in weak and strong dissipation regimes. We also investigate theoretical aspects of the model in light of the swampland conjectures, as warm inflation in the strong dissipation regime has been known as a way to satisfy the three conditions currently discussed in the literature. We find that when $Γ\propto T^3$, the $β$-exponential model can be accommodated into the conjectures.

Despite intense experimental efforts, the nature of the unconventional superconducting order parameter of UTe$_2$ remains elusive. This puzzle stems from different reported numbers of superconducting transitions at ambient pressure, as well as a complex pressure-temperature phase diagram. To bring new insights into the superconducting properties of UTe$_2$, we measured the heat capacity and electrical resistivity of single crystals under compressive uniaxial stress $σ$ applied along different crystallographic directions. We find that the critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of the single observed bulk superconducting transition decreases with $σ$ along $[100]$ and $[110]$ but increases with $σ$ along $[001]$. Aside from its effect on $T_{\rm c}$, we notice that $c$-axis stress leads to a significant piezoresistivity, which we associate with the shift of the zero-pressure resistivity peak at $T^\star \approx 15\, \rm K$ to lower temperatures under stress. Finally, we show that an in-plane shear stress $σ_{xy}$ does not induce any observable splitting of the superconducting transition over a stress range of $σ_{xy}\approx 0.17 \, \rm GPa$. This result suggests that the superconducting order parameter of UTe$_2$ may be single-component at ambient pressure.

We investigate the impact of the coupling in the prediction of the inflationary parameters, thereby affecting the viability of the model. We find that a small coupling of order $ξ\sim10^{-3}$ is preferred by data at the $n_s-r$ plane level, and that the presence of a non-zero $ξ$ allows for a large interval of the mass scale $M$, in which it is possible to achieve a low tensor-to-scalar ratio. We also establish constraints imposed by a subsequent reheating era, in which its duration and temperature can be related to CMB observables, which in return, restricts the possible values for the $n_s$ and $r$ parameters.

In the present work we demonstrate that C-doped Zr$_{5}$Pt$_{3}$ is an electron-phonon superconductor (with critical temperature T$_\mathrm{C}$ = 3.7\,K) with a nonsymmorphic topological Dirac nodal-line semimetal state, which we report here for the first time. The superconducting properties of Zr$_{5}$Pt$_{3}$C$_{0.5}$ have been investigated by means of magnetization and muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. We find that at low temperatures the depolarization rate is almost constant and can be well described by a single-band $s-$wave model with a superconducting gap of $2Δ(0)/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C}$ = 3.84, close to the value of BCS theory. From transverse field $μ$SR analysis we estimate the London penetration depth $λ_{L}$ = 469 nm, superconducting carrier density $n_{s}$ = 2$\times$10$^{26}$ $m^{-3}$, and effective mass m$^{*}$ = 1.584 $m_{e}$. Zero field $μ$SR confirms the absence of any spontaneous magnetic moment in the superconducting ground state. To gain additional insights into the electronic ground state of C-doped Zr$_5$Pt$_3$, we have also performed first-principles calculations within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). The observed homogenous electronic character of the Fermi surface as well as the mutual decrease of $T_\mathrm{C}$ and density of states at the Fermi level are consistent with the experimental findings. However, the band structure reveals the presence of robust, gapless fourfold-degenarate nodal lines protected by $6_{3}$ screw rotations and glide mirror planes. Therefore, Zr$_5$Pt$_3$ represents a novel, unprecedented condensed matter system to investigate the intricate interplay between superconductivity and topology.

Newly-discovered superconductor UTe$_2$ is a strong contender for a topological spin-triplet state wherein a multi-component order parameter arises from two nearly-degenerate superconducting states. A key issue is whether both of these states intrinsically exist at ambient pressure. Through thermal expansion and calorimetry, we show that UTe$_2$ at ambient conditions exhibits two detectable transitions only in some samples, and the size of the thermal expansion jump at each transition varies when the measurement is performed in different regions of the sample. This result indicates that the two transitions arise from two spatially separated regions that are inhomogeneously mixed throughout the volume of the sample, each with a discrete superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$). Notably, samples with higher T$_c$ only show a single transition at ambient pressure. Above 0.3 GPa, however, two transitions are invariably observed in ac calorimetry. Our results not only point to a nearly vertical line in the pressure-temperature phase diagram but also provide a unified scenario for the sample dependence of UTe$_{2}$.

UTe$_2$ is a recently discovered unconventional superconductor that has attracted much interest due to its many intriguing properties - a large residual density-of-states in the superconducting state, re-entrant superconductivity in high magnetic fields, and potentially spin-triplet topological superconductivity. Our ac calorimetry, electrical resistivity, and x-ray absorption study of UTe$_2$ under applied pressure reveals key new insights on the superconducting and magnetic states surrounding pressure-induced quantum criticality at P$_{c1}$ = 1.3 GPa. First, our specific heat data at low pressures, combined with a phenomenological model, show that pressure alters the balance between two closely competing superconducting orders. Second, near 1.5 GPa we detect two bulk transitions that trigger changes in the resistivity which are consistent with antiferromagnetic order, rather than ferromagnetism. The presence of both bulk magnetism and superconductivity at pressures above P$_{c2}$ = 1.4 GPa results in a significant temperature difference between resistively and thermodynamically determined transitions into the superconducting state, which indicates a suppression of the superconducting volume fraction by magnetic order. Third, the emergence of magnetism is accompanied by an increase in valence towards a U$^{4+}$ (5f2) state, which indicates that UTe$_2$ exhibits intermediate valence at ambient pressure. Our results suggest that antiferromagnetic fluctuations may play a more significant role on the superconducting state of UTe$_2$ than previously thought.

We propose to build and operate a detector that, for the first time, will measure the process $pp\toνX$ at the LHC and search for feebly interacting particles (FIPs) in an unexplored domain. The TI18 tunnel has been identified as a suitable site to perform these measurements due to very low machine-induced background. The detector will be off-axis with respect to the ATLAS interaction point (IP1) and, given the pseudo-rapidity range accessible, the corresponding neutrinos will mostly come from charm decays: the proposed experiment will thus make the first test of the heavy flavour production in a pseudo-rapidity range that is not accessible by the current LHC detectors. In order to efficiently reconstruct neutrino interactions and identify their flavour, the detector will combine in the target region nuclear emulsion technology with scintillating fibre tracking layers and it will adopt a muon identification system based on scintillating bars that will also play the role of a hadronic calorimeter. The time of flight measurement will be achieved thanks to a dedicated timing detector. The detector will be a small-scale prototype of the scattering and neutrino detector (SND) of the SHiP experiment: the operation of this detector will provide an important test of the neutrino reconstruction in a high occupancy environment.

In this letter, we have examined the superconducting ground state of the HfV$_2$Ga$_4$ compound using resistivity, magnetization, zero-field (ZF) and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. Resistivity and magnetization unveil the onset of bulk superconductivity with $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 3.9~K, while TF-$μ$SR measurements show that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is well described by a nodal two-gap $s$+$d$-wave order parameter model. In addition, ZF muon relaxation rate increases with decreasing temperature below 4.6 K, indicating the presence of weak spin fluctuations. These observations suggest an unconventional multiband nature of the superconductivity possibly arising from the distinct $d$-bands of V and Hf ions with spin fluctuations playing an important role. To better understand these findings, we carry out first-principles electronic-structure calculations, further highlighting that the Fermi surface consists of multiple disconnected sheets with very different orbital weights and spin-orbit coupling, bridging the way for a nodal multiband superconductivity scenario. In this vein, therefore, HfV$_2$Ga$_4$-family stands out as an open avenue to novel unexplored unconventional superconducting compounds, such as ScV$_2$Ga$_4$ and ZrV$_2$Ga$_4$, and other many rare earths based materials.

MV$_2$Ga$_4$ (M = Sc, Zr, Hf) compounds belong to an emerging class of materials showing a unique combination of unusual superconducting behavior with extended linear chains in the crystal structure. In order to gain insights {into} its mechanical and thermal properties, we have performed first-principles electronic-structure calculations in the framework of the Density Functional Theory (DFT). From the calculated second-order elastic constants, we have systematically shown that the extended linear vanadium chain substructures indeed give rise to an anisotropic regime in the elastic and mechanical moduli. The high density of valence and conduction electrons along the linear vanadium chains leads to a directional dependence of the reciprocal linear compressibility, Young's modulus and shear modulus. Poisson's ratio for several elongation directions is also drastically affected by the presence of extended V chains. If the elongation is along the V chains, all compounds exhibit {practically} the same Poisson ratio in directions perpendicular to it, further highlighting the importance of the V chains to the mechanical properties. Moreover, based on our results, we have discussed the possible consequences of the elastic anisotropy on the superconducting properties of the compounds. Finally, using the Debye-Grüneisen approximation, our calculations of thermal properties show {a good agreement with the available experimental low temperature heat capacity data above the superconducting critical temperature.

Abstract:
The physical properties of the Zr$_5$Pt$_3$ compound with interstitial carbon in hexagonal D8$_8$-structure was investigated. A set of macroscopic measurements reveal a bulk superconducting at approximately 7 K for Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_{0.3}$ close to Zr$_5$Pt$_3$, also with a correlate anomalous resistivity behavior. However, both the signatures of strong electron-electron interaction, and the electron…

However, both the signatures of strong electron-electron interaction, and the electronic contribution to specific heat, increase dramatically with the C doping. For the first time the x-ray photoelectron spectra compared with DFT/PWLO calculations of electronic structure show a complex Fermi surface with high density of states for Zr$_5$Pt$_3$. Also results show the signature of unconventional superconductivity. Indeed, was observed an unusual behavior for lower and upper critical field diagrams of Zr$_5$Pt$_3$C$_{0.3}$. The temperature dependence of penetration length and electronic contribution to specific heat suggests that electronic pairing deviates of $s$-wave the BCS scenario.

The HfV$_2$Ga$_4$ compound was recently reported to exhibit unusual bulk superconducting properties, with the possibility of multiband behavior. To gain insight into its properties, we performed ab-initio electronic structure calculations based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT). Our results show that the density of states at the Fermi energy is mainly composed by V--$d$ states. The McMillan formula predicts a superconducting critical temperature ($T_{c}$) of approximately $3.9\,$K, in excellent agreement with the experimental value at $4.1\,$K, indicating that superconductivity in this new compound may be explained by the electron-phonon mechanism. Calculated valence charge density maps clearly show directional bonding between Hf and V atoms with 1D highly populated V-chains, and some ionic character between Hf--Ga and V--Ga bonds. Finally, we have shown that there are electrons occupying two distinct bands at the Fermi level, with different characters, which supports experimental indications of possible multiband superconductivity. Based on the results, we propose the study of a related compound, ScV$_2$Ga$_4$, showing that it has similar electronic properties, but probably with a higher $T_c$ than HfV$_2$Ga$_4$.
