Although fundamental to the advancement of Machine Learning, the classic evaluation metrics extracted from the confusion matrix, such as precision and F1, are limited. Such metrics only offer a quantitative view of the models' performance, without considering the complexity of the data or the quality of the hit. To overcome these limitations, recent research has introduced the use of psychometric metrics such as Item Response Theory (IRT), which allows an assessment at the level of latent characteristics of instances. This work investigates how IRT concepts can enrich a confusion matrix in order to identify which model is the most appropriate among options with similar performance. In the study carried out, IRT does not replace, but complements classical metrics by offering a new layer of evaluation and observation of the fine behavior of models in specific instances. It was also observed that there is 97% confidence that the score from the IRT has different contributions from 66% of the classical metrics analyzed.

In order to understand how nonlocal diffusion and pulse intervention affect dynamics of species, we focus on an age-structured nonlocal diffusion model in moving and heterogeneous environment, where nonlocal diffusion describes the long range dispersal of species itself and time-periodic harvesting pulse exacting on the adult reflects human intervention. A generalized principal eigenvalue involving harvesting rate used to identify the spreading and vanishing outcomes is firstly defined and the existence of the principal eigenvalue is given under some conditions. Subsequently, properties of the generalized principal eigenvalue and the principal eigenvalue related to harvesting rate and length of habitat interval are analyzed, respectively. The criteria to governing spreading or vanishing of the species are finally investigated, with sufficient conditions for spreading-vanishing established. Our results indicate that complexities can be induced by the internal long rang dispersal and expanding capacities of species, as well as external harvesting intervention of human. Specifically, appropriate harvesting rate and expanding capacities can even change the reciprocal outcomes of species from co-existence to co-extinction.

To understand how impulsive intervention and regional evolution jointly influence the spread of faecal-oral diseases, this paper develops an impulsive faecal-oral model in a periodically evolving environment. The well-posedness of the model is first checked. Then, the existence of the principal eigenvalue dependent on impulse intensity and evolving rate is proved based on Krein-Rutman theorem. With the help of this value, the threshold dynamical behaviours of the model are explored. More importantly, this paper also derives the monotonicity of the principal eigenvalue with respect to initial region and impulse intensity and estimates the principal eigenvalue in some special cases. Finally, numerical simulations are used to verify the correctness of the theoretical results and to explore the impact of regional evolution rate on the spread of the diseases. Our research shows that large impulsive intensity $1-g'(0)$ and small evolving rate $ρ(t)$ play a positive role in the prevention and control of the diseases.

This paper deals with an impulsive degenerate logistic model, where pulses are introduced for modeling interventions or disturbances, and degenerate logistic term may describe refugees or protections zones for the species. Firstly, the principal eigenvalue depending on impulse rate, which is regarded as a threshold value, is introduced and characterized. Secondly, the asymptotic behavior of the population is fully investigated and sufficient conditions for the species to be extinct, persist or grow unlimitedly are given. Our results extend those of well-understood logistic and Malthusian models. Finally, numerical simulations emphanzise our theoretical results highlighting that medium impulse rate is more favorable for species to persist, small rate results in extinction and large rate leads the species to an unlimited growth.

In order to understand how impulsive interventions and environmental perturbations affect dynamics of competitors, we focus on a diffusive competition model with free boundaries and periodic pulses in a temporally heterogeneous environment with upward or downward advection. The dependence of the principal eigenvalue of corresponding periodic impulsive eigenvalue problem on advection rates, habitat sizes and pulses is investigated, which gives precise conditions that classify the dynamics into four types of competition outcomes including coexistence, co-extinction, two different competition exclusions for small or negative advection rates. Some sufficient conditions on pulses or initial habitats for species spreading or vanishing, and spreading speeds are then established. Our results not only extend the existing ones to the case with pulses, but also reveal the effects of human and natural factors, that is, impulsive interventions factors including positive or negative impulsive effect, pulse intensity and timing can significantly affect and alter the competition outcomes. The different performances of the superior and inferior affected by environmental perturbations are also reflected in the simulations.

Intelligent systems that use Machine Learning classification algorithms are increasingly common in everyday society. However, many systems use black-box models that do not have characteristics that allow for self-explanation of their predictions. This situation leads researchers in the field and society to the following question: How can I trust the prediction of a model I cannot understand? In this sense, XAI emerges as a field of AI that aims to create techniques capable of explaining the decisions of the classifier to the end-user. As a result, several techniques have emerged, such as Explanation-by-Example, which has a few initiatives consolidated by the community currently working with XAI. This research explores the Item Response Theory (IRT) as a tool to explaining the models and measuring the level of reliability of the Explanation-by-Example approach. To this end, four datasets with different levels of complexity were used, and the Random Forest model was used as a hypothesis test. From the test set, 83.8% of the errors are from instances in which the IRT points out the model as unreliable.

Electrical energy is considered as a fundamental parameter for inclusion in Fermi gas theory, in addition to thermal energy. It is argued that electrical energy can move some electrons to above the Fermi Level, providing free charges to carry the electrical current, even at absolute zero temperature. The Drude model, Ohm's law, quantum resistance, and the electrical resistivity due to electron-electron scattering appear naturally as a consequence of the theoretical description, which is based on the quantization of the angular momentum and the Fermi-Dirac distribution, considering total energy as $ε$ = k$_B$$T$ + $Φ_0$$I$. The electrical and magnetic forces acting on an electron are related to the ratio between the Fermi velocity and the speed of light and show that the electron motion is due to helical paths. Considering the center of mass description for the Bohr atom, it was possible to show that the magnetic force is related to the electrical force as $F_M$ = ($α$/$π$) $F_E$, which demonstrates that the electrons move in helical paths along the orbit. The helical motion naturally provides for quantization of the magnetic flux, the spin of the electron, and the first correction term of the anomalous magnetic moment. Applying the model to describe the electron-electron scattering allows prediction of the behavior of the electrical resistivity of many metals at low temperatures, which is in excellent agreement with empirical observations.

We discuss the existence of multiple positive solutions leading to the occurrence of an S-shaped bifurcation curve to the equations of the form $$ -Δ_p u= f(μ,λ, u)~ \mbox{in} ~Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N $$ where $Δ_p$ is a $p$-Laplacian, $p>1$, $N\geq 1$, $μ, λ\in \mathbb{R}$. We deal with relatively unexplored cases when $f(μ,λ, u)$ is non-Lipschitz at $u=0$, $f(μ,λ, 0) = 0 $ and $ f(μ,λ, u) <0$, $u \in (0,r)$, for some $r<+\infty$. We develop the nonlinear generalized Rayleigh quotients method to find a range of parameters where the equation may have distinct branches of positive solutions. As a consequence, applying the Nehari manifold method and the mountain pass theorem, we prove that the equation for some range of values $μ, λ$, has at least three positive solutions with two linearly unstable solutions and one linearly stable.
The results evidence that the bifurcation curve is S-shaped and exhibits the so-called dual cusp catastrophe which is characterized by the fact that the corresponding dynamic equation has stable states only within the cusp-shaped region in the control plane of parameters. Our results are new even in the one-dimensional case and $p=2$.

The experiments covered by Machine Learning (ML) must consider two important aspects to assess the performance of a model: datasets and algorithms. Robust benchmarks are needed to evaluate the best classifiers. For this, one can adopt gold standard benchmarks available in public repositories. However, it is common not to consider the complexity of the dataset when evaluating. This work proposes a new assessment methodology based on the combination of Item Response Theory (IRT) and Glicko-2, a rating system mechanism generally adopted to assess the strength of players (e.g., chess). For each dataset in a benchmark, the IRT is used to estimate the ability of classifiers, where good classifiers have good predictions for the most difficult test instances. Tournaments are then run for each pair of classifiers so that Glicko-2 updates performance information such as rating value, rating deviation and volatility for each classifier. A case study was conducted hereby which adopted the OpenML-CC18 benchmark as the collection of datasets and pool of various classification algorithms for evaluation. Not all datasets were observed to be really useful for evaluating algorithms, where only 10% were considered really difficult. Furthermore, the existence of a subset containing only 50% of the original amount of OpenML-CC18 was verified, which is equally useful for algorithm evaluation. Regarding the algorithms, the methodology proposed herein identified the Random Forest as the algorithm with the best innate ability.

Energy efficiency is a topic that has attracted the attention of researchers in recent years, in order to seek sustainability solutions for energy production and reduction of its costs, aiming to provide a balance between development and protection of natural resources. Thus, we proposed the EnergySaver software that has as its objective the monitoring of electric energy consumption, from data capture to consumption forecast for the following month. To create Energy Saver, we used Open Source technologies applied to the Internet of Things (IoT), embedded systems, and Long Short-Term Memory Neural Networks (LSTM). However, in order to have harmony between the current researchers and those who may manipulate this software in the future, it is essential to create a Software Manual, where all the details of its implementation are described in detail. Therefore, this article describes all the steps for the implementation of the system, from the methodological scheme of the system, its modeling with UML, to the modules that compose it, becoming a Manual for its use.

The mean field theory is revisited in the classical and quantum mechanical limits. Taking into account the boundary conditions at the phase transition and the third law of the thermodynamics the physical properties of the ordered and disordered phases were reported. The equation for the order parameter predicts the occurrence of a saturation of $Ψ^2$ = 1 near $Θ_S$, the temperature below the quantum mechanical ground state is reached. The theoretical predictions are also compared with high resolution thermal expansion data of SrTiO$_{\text{3}}$ monocrystalline samples and other some previous results. An excellent agreement has been found suggesting a universal behavior of the theoretical model to describe continuous structural phase transitions.

Despite the availability of benchmark machine learning (ML) repositories (e.g., UCI, OpenML), there is no standard evaluation strategy yet capable of pointing out which is the best set of datasets to serve as gold standard to test different ML algorithms. In recent studies, Item Response Theory (IRT) has emerged as a new approach to elucidate what should be a good ML benchmark. This work applied IRT to explore the well-known OpenML-CC18 benchmark to identify how suitable it is on the evaluation of classifiers. Several classifiers ranging from classical to ensembles ones were evaluated using IRT models, which could simultaneously estimate dataset difficulty and classifiers' ability. The Glicko-2 rating system was applied on the top of IRT to summarize the innate ability and aptitude of classifiers. It was observed that not all datasets from OpenML-CC18 are really useful to evaluate classifiers. Most datasets evaluated in this work (84%) contain easy instances in general (e.g., around 10% of difficult instances only). Also, 80% of the instances in half of this benchmark are very discriminating ones, which can be of great use for pairwise algorithm comparison, but not useful to push classifiers abilities. This paper presents this new evaluation methodology based on IRT as well as the tool decodIRT, developed to guide IRT estimation over ML benchmarks.

The presence of both strongly-singular and non-continuous terms bring up difficulties in associating a differentiable functional to the problem with finite energy in the whole space $W_0^{1,Φ}(Ω)$. To overcome this obstacle, we established an optimal condition for the existence of $W_0^{1,Φ}(Ω)$-solutions to a strongly-singular problem, which allows us to constrain the energy functional to a subset of $W_0^{1,Φ}(Ω)$ to apply techniques of convex analysis and generalized gradient in Clarke sense.

The main feature here is to consider quasilinear elliptic systems involving both nonsingular nonlinearities combined with indefinite potentials and singular cases perturbed by superlinear and subcritical couple terms. These prevent us to use arguments based on Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition and variational methods for differentiable functionals. By exploring the Nehari method and doing a fine analysis on the fibering map associated, we get estimates that allow us unify the arguments to show multiplicity of semi-trivial solutions in both cases.

In this paper, we show existence of \textit{continuums} of positive solutions for non-local quasilinear problems with strongly-singular reaction term on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N \geq 2$. We approached non-autonomous and non-local equations by applying the Bifurcation Theory to the corresponding $ε$-perturbed problems and using a comparison principle for $W_{\mathrm{loc}}^{1,p}(Ω)$-sub and supersolutions to obtain qualitative properties of the $ε$-\textit{continuum} limit. Moreover, this technique empowers us to study a strongly-singular and non-homogeneous Kirchhoff problem to get the existence of a \textit{continuum} of positive solutions.

beyond the Nehari extremal value, as defined in Il'yasov [Topol. Methods Nonlinear Anal., 2017], when the potential $b \in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$ may change its sign, $0<a\in L^{\frac{2}{1+γ}}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$, $V$ is a positive continuous function, $N\geq 3$ and $λ>0$ is a real parameter. The main difficulties come from the non-differentiability of the energy functional and the fact that the intersection of the boundaries of the connected components of the Nehari set is non empty. We overcome these difficulties by exploring topological structures of that boundary to build non-empty sets whose boundaries have empty intersection and minimizing over them by controlling the energy level.

Our approach is based on sub-supersolutions techniques, fixed point theory, in the study of $ W^{1,p}_{loc}(Ω)$-topology of a solution application and a new comparison principle for sub-supersolutions in $W^{1,p}_{loc}(Ω)$ to a problem with $p$-Laplacian operator perturbed by a very singular term at zero and sublinear at infinity.

Four new photon detectors, based on MPGD technology and covering a total active area larger than 1.2~$m^2$ have replaced the previously used MWPC-based photon detectors. The new detector architecture, resulting from a dedicated, eight years long, R\&D program, consists in a hybrid MPGD combination of two THGEMs and a Micromegas stage; the first THGEM, coated with a CsI layer, acts as a reflective photocathode. The signals are extracted from the anode pads by capacitive coupling and read-out by analog front-end electronics based on the APV25 chip. The new COMPASS RICH-1 photon detectors are described in detail: the detector design, the engineering aspects, the mass production, and the quality assessment are discussed. The assembly of the MPGD components and the installation of the new detectors are illustrated together with the main aspects of the commissioning. Preliminary indication of performance results are also presented.

SrTiO$_{3}$ undergoes a cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition at 105K. This antiferrodistortive transition is believed to be in competition with incipient ferroelectricity. Substituting strontium by isovalent calcium induces a ferroelectric order. Introducing mobile electrons to the system by chemical non-isovalent doping, on the other hand, leads to the emergence of a dilute metal with a superconducting ground state. The link between superconductivity and the other two instabilities is an open question, which gathers momentum in the context of the growing popularity of the paradigm linking unconventional superconductors and quantum critical points. We present a set of specific-heat, neutron-scattering and dielectric permittivity and polarization measurements on Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$ ($0<x<0.009$) and a low-temperature electric conductivity in Sr$_{0.9978}$Ca$_{0.0022}$TiO$_{3-δ}$. Calcium substitution was found to enhance the transition temperature for both anti-ferrodistortive and ferroelectric transitions. Moreover, we find that Sr$_{0.9978}$Ca$_{0.0022}$TiO$_{3-δ}$ has a superconducting ground state. The critical temperature in this rare case of a superconductor with a ferroelectric parent, is slightly lower than in SrTiO$_{3-δ}$ of comparable carrier concentration. A three-dimensional phase diagram for Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3-δ}$ tracking the three transition temperatures as a function of x and $δ$ results from this study, in which ferroelectric and superconducting ground states are not immediate neighbours.

This dichotomy -- semiconductor-like in one direction and metallic in a mutually perpendicular direction -- gives rise to substantial transverse thermoelectric (TE) effects and a transverse TE figure of merit among the largest known for a single compound.

In this work we show that superconductivity can be observed in Nb2SnC depending on the synthesis method used. The quality of the superconductor is strongly dependent of the synthesis method and the optimal results were reached for samples synthesized at 2.5 GPa and 523 +/- 50oC. We report on the application of the Resistively Shunted Junction (RSJ) model to granular high-TC superconductors. Some derived predictions of the RSJ model are applied to a set of superconducting granular samples which can be considered as a network of Josephson junctions. The investigated samples belong to both hole-doped Y1-xPrxBa2Cu3O7-d (x = 0.0, 0.35, and 0.45) and the electron-doped Sm2-xCexCuO4-d (x = 0.18) systems which display the so-called double resistive superconducting transition. We have performed several transport measurements in these compounds including temperature and magnetic field dependence of the electrical resistance, R(T,H), and I-V characteristics. Several aspects of the I-V characteristics were quantitatively well described by the RSJ model. The combined results strongly suggest that dissipation in granular superconducting samples is a natural consequence of the normal current flowing in parallel with the supercurrent current.

A two-fluid model is proposed to describe the transport properties of granular superconductors. Using the resistively shunted junction model and some aspects of the two-level system theory, a statistical model is developed which takes into account the ratio between the number of normal and superconducting electrons carrying the applied current. The theoretical model reveals excellent agreement when compared to transport properties of four high-Tc superconductors. The results suggest that the two-fluid model is independent of the sample composition, critical temperature and whether the superconducting compound is electron or hole-doped.

The long-time dynamics of the critical contact process which is brought suddenly out of an uncorrelated initial state undergoes ageing in close analogy with quenched magnetic systems. In particular, we show through Monte Carlo simulations in one and two dimensions and through mean-field theory that time-translation invariance is broken and that dynamical scaling holds. We find that the autocorrelation and autoresponse exponents lambda_{Gamma} and lambda_R are equal but, in contrast to systems relaxing to equilibrium, the ageing exponents a and b are distinct. A recent proposal to define a non-equilibrium temperature through the short-time limit of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio is therefore not applicable.

The recently proposed Langevin equation, aimed to capture the relevant critical features of stochastic sandpiles, and other self-organizing systems is studied numerically. This equation is similar to the Reggeon field theory, describing generic systems with absorbing states, but it is coupled linearly to a second conserved and static (non-diffusive) field. It has been claimed to represent a new universality class, including different discrete models: the Manna as well as other sandpiles, reaction-diffusion systems, etc. In order to integrate the equation, and surpass the difficulties associated with its singular noise, we follow a numerical technique introduced by Dickman. Our results coincide remarkably well with those of discrete models claimed to belong to this universality class, in one, two, and three dimensions. This provides a strong backing for the Langevin theory of stochastic sandpiles, and to the very existence of this new, yet meagerly understood, universality class.

The results indicate the occurrence of superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition (SIT) driven by the applied electrical current, and suggest that the current-induced SIT can be considered as the dynamical counterpart of the magnetic-field- tuned SIT.

We study a quantum extension of the spherical $p$-spin-glass model using the imaginary-time replica formalism. We solve the model numerically and we discuss two analytical approximation schemes that capture most of the features of the solution. The phase diagram and the physical properties of the system are determined in two ways: by imposing the usual conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium and by using the condition of marginal stability. In both cases, the phase diagram consists of two qualitatively different regions. If the transition temperature is higher than a critical value $T^{\star}$, quantum effects are qualitatively irrelevant and the phase transition is {\it second} order, as in the classical case. However, when quantum fluctuations depress the transition temperature below $T^{\star}$, the transition becomes {\it first order}. The susceptibility is discontinuous and shows hysteresis across the first order line, a behavior reminiscent of that observed in the dipolar Ising spin-glass LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$ in an external transverse magnetic field. We discuss in detail the thermodynamics and the stationary dynamics of both states. The spectrum of magnetic excitations of the equilibrium spin-glass state is gaped, leading to an exponentially small specific heat at low temperatures. That of the marginally stable state is gapless and its specific heat varies linearly with temperature, as generally observed in glasses at low temperature. We show that the properties of the marginally stable state are closely related to those obtained in studies of the real-time dynamics of the system weakly coupled to a quantum thermal bath. Finally, we discuss a possible application of our results to the problem of polymers in random media.

We study the spin-glass transition in a disordered quantum model. There is a region in the phase diagram where quantum effects are small and the phase transition is second order, as in the classical case. In another region, quantum fluctuations drive the transition first order. Across the first order line the susceptibility is discontinuous and shows hysteresis. Our findings reproduce qualitatively observations on LiHo$_x$Y$_{1-x}$F$_4$. We also discuss a marginally stable spin-glass state and derive some results previously obtained from the real-time dynamics of the model coupled to a bath.
