Topological defects in elastic media may be described by a geometric field akin to three-dimensional gravity. From this point of view, disclinations are line defects of zero width corresponding to a singularity of the curvature in an otherwise flat background. On the other hand, in two dimensions, the Frank free energy of a nematic liquid crystal may be interpreted as an Abelian Higgs Lagrangian. In this work, we construct an Abelian Higgs model coupled to "gravity" for the nematic phase, with the perspective of finding more realistic disclinations. That is, a cylindrically symmetric line defect of finite radius, invariant under translations along its axis. Numerical analysis of the equations of motion indeed yield a $+1$ winding number "thick" disclination. The defect is described jointly by the gauge and the Higgs fields, that compose the director field, and the background geometry. Away from the defect, the geometry is conical, associated to a dihedral deficit angle. The gauge field, confined to the defect, gives a structure to the disclination while the Higgs field, outside, represents the nematic order.

From the study of the trajectories, we observe a tendency for the light rays to wrap, and eventually be trapped, around the neck of the device. The wave equation appears to have an effective attractive potential, and their solutions confirm the bound states suggested by the trajectories. The relevant equations are solved numerically using neural networks.

Black holes have been a subject of investigation over years not only because they have interesting physical properties, but also because they seem to be the appropriate tool for studying gravity in quantum scale. Although a lot of effort has been made to understand the aspects of spacetime on the quantum scale, the approach which includes noncommutativity of spacetime proves to be promising among several possibilities. In this paper, we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method to study the thermodynamic properties of cylindrical black holes (black strings) in noncommutative spacetime. It is also investigated the behavior of the black string in the presence of back reaction as well as its influence on the system can be understood as an anomaly. This work aims to provide understanding about black strings thermodynamics in noncommutative spacetime since this scale of spacetime is important for the comprehension of the relation between quantum mechanics and general relativity.

Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) was the first laboratory to measure the gravitational waves. It was needed an exceptional experimental design to measure distance changes much less than a radius of a proton. In the same way, the data analyses to confirm and extract information is a tremendously hard task. Here, it is shown a computational procedure base on artificial neural networks to detect a gravitation wave event and extract the knowledge of its ring-down time from the LIGO data. With this proposal, it is possible to make a probabilistic thermometer for gravitational wave detection and obtain physical information about the astronomical body system that created the phenomenon. Here, the ring-down time is determined with a direct data measure, without the need to use numerical relativity techniques and high computational power.

We investigate some consequences of a specific non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor on the physics of certain cosmic string configurations. This non-conservation is induced by a new gravitational theory recently introduced as an attempt to incorporate dissipative systems in the gravity description. This model of gravity is endowed with a variational principle, where an action-dependence on the geometric sector is assumed. For the Abelian-Higgs string we derive the dynamical equations and provide the numerical solutions describing the behavior of the Higgs and gauge fields as well as the profile of the metric functions for different cases of the parameter that characterises the model. Additionally, from this numerical approach we find how the inner structure of the cosmic string is affected by this underlying gravitational theory, by analyzing the deviations both on the mass per unit length and the deficit angle of the string. Next, we proceed with an analytical treatment obtaining the solution close to the string axis and also the corresponding vacuum solution. Our analytical results are also complemented with the study of a thick cosmic string model, where the defect is endowed with finite core. In this case we have obtained the proper interior solution which joined together with the vacuum metric outside provides an exact solution for the exterior geometry which generalizes previous results and leads to a decreasing of the mass per unit length of the cosmic string.

We perform the calculations for both an asymptotically flat and asymptotically (anti)de Sitter spacetimes. We found that the angular deficit generated by the string decreases as the parameter $ζ$ increases, in the case of a null cosmological constant. For a positive cosmological constant, we found that the cosmic horizon is affected in a non-trivial way by the parameter $ζ$.

In this paper we investigate the non-Abelian cosmic string in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. In order to do that we construct the complete set of equations of motion considering the presence of a cosmological constant. By using numerical analysis we provide the behavior of the Higgs and gauge fields and also for the metric tensor for specific values of the physical parameters of the theory. For de Sitter case, we find the appearance of horizons that although being consequence of the presence of the cosmological constant it strongly depends on the value of the gravitational coupling. In the anti-de Sitter case, we find that the system does not present horizons. In fact the new feature of this system is related with the behavior of the $(00)$ and $(zz)$ components of the metric tensor. They present a strongly increasing for large distance from the string.

In this paper we study regular cosmic string solutions of the non-Abelian Higgs model coupled with the Einstein gravity. In order to do that, we constructed a set of coupled differential ordinary equation. Because there is no closed solution for this set of equations, we solve it numerically. The solutions that we are interested in asymptote to a flat space-time with a planar angle deficit. This model under consideration present two bosonic sectors, besides the non-Abelian gauge one, coupled minimally with the gravitational fields. The two bosonic sectors may present a direct coupling, which plays an important role on the behavior of the matter and gauge fields and also on the behavior on the geometry of the spacetime. We explicitly analyze the behaviors of the energy density and planar angle deficit as function of the energy scale where the gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken and the coupling interaction between the bosonic sectors.

The increasing use of social networks generates enormous amounts of data that can be used for many types of analysis. Some of these data have temporal and geographical information, which can be used for comprehensive examination. In this paper, we propose a new method to analyze the massive volume of messages available in Twitter to identify places in the world where topics such as TV shows, climate change, disasters, and sports are emerging. The proposed method is based on a neural network that is used to detect outliers from a time series, which is built upon statistical data from tweets located on different political divisions (i.e., countries, cities). The outliers are used to identify topics within an abnormal behavior in Twitter. The effectiveness of our method is evaluated in an online environment indicating new findings on modeling local people's behavior from different places.
