Lasso is a popular and efficient approach to simultaneous estimation and variable selection in high-dimensional regression models. In this paper, a robust LAD-lasso method for multiple outcomes is presented that addresses the challenges of non-normal outcome distributions and outlying observations. Measured covariate data from space or time, or spectral bands or genomic positions often have natural correlation structure arising from measuring distance between the covariates. The proposed multi-outcome approach includes handling of such covariate blocks by a group fusion penalty, which encourages similarity between neighboring regression coefficient vectors by penalizing their differences for example in sequential data situation. Properties of the proposed approach are first illustrated by extensive simulations, and secondly the method is applied to a real-life skewed data example on retirement behavior with heteroscedastic explanatory variables.

Abstract:
We have integrated single and coupled superconducting transmon qubits into flip-chip modules. Each module consists of two chips -- one quantum chip and one control chip -- that are bump-bonded together. We demonstrate time-averaged coherence times exceeding $90\,μs$, single-qubit gate fidelities exceeding $99.9\%$, and two-qubit gate fidelities above $98.6\%$. We also present device design methods…

We also present device design methods and discuss the sensitivity of device parameters to variation in interchip spacing. Notably, the additional flip-chip fabrication steps do not degrade the qubit performance compared to our baseline state-of-the-art in single-chip, planar circuits. This integration technique can be extended to the realisation of quantum processors accommodating hundreds of qubits in one module as it offers adequate input/output wiring access to all qubits and couplers.

Zero-inflated explanatory variables are common in fields such as ecology and finance. In this paper we address the problem of having excess of zero values in some explanatory variables which are subject to multioutcome lasso-regularized variable selection. Briefly, the problem results from the failure of the lasso-type of shrinkage methods to recognize any difference between zero value occurring either in the regression coefficient or in the corresponding value of the explanatory variable. This kind of confounding will obviously increase number of false positives - all non-zero regression coefficients do not necessarily represent real outcome effects.
We present here the adaptive LAD-lasso for multiple outcomes which extends the earlier work of multivariate LAD-lasso with adaptive penalization. In addition of well known property of having less biased regression coefficients, we show here how the adaptivity improves also method's ability to recover from influences of excess of zero values measured in continuous covariates.

Chenopodium album seedling emergence studies were conducted at nine European and two North American locations comparing local populations with a common population from Denmark. It is hypothesized that C. album seedling recruitment timing and magnitude have adapted to environmental and cropping system practices of a locality. Limitations in the habitat (filter 1) were reflected in local C. album population recruitment season length. Generally, the duration of seedling recruitment of both populations (local; DEN-COM) increased with decreasing latitude, north-to-south. In general, compared to the local population, DEN-COM recruitment at locations north of Denmark was longer and south of Denmark was shorter, and ended sooner. Generally, the local cropping system disturbances (CSD) period increased with decreasing latitude. The total duration of the CSD period was over twice as long in the south as that in the north. Recruitment at each locality possessed seasonal structure (time, number) consisting of 2-4 discrete seasonal cohorts. This may be an adaptive means by which C. album searches for, and exploits, recruitment opportunity just prior to, and after, predictable disturbances. The control of C. album seedling emergence is contained in the heteroblastic traits of its locally adapted seeds, and is stimulated by a complex interaction of light, heat, water, nitrate and oxygen signals inherent in the local environment. Our observations of complex recruitment patterns occurring at critical cropping times is strong evidence that C. album possesses a flexible and sensitive germination regulation system adaptable to opportunity in many different Eurasian and North American agricultural habitats.
