A multi-parameter analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of meteorological parameters, night sky brightness and seismic hazard on proposed sites for the new optical/infrared Egyptian astronomical telescope. The ERA5 reanalysis data set is used to get the following meteorological parameters: Total cloud coverage fraction, precipitable water vapor, relative humidity, wind speed & direction and Air temperature. To estimate the aerosol optical depth we used the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2). Light pollution over the candidate sites was measured from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day Night Band (DNB). The seismic input in terms of maximum acceleration and response spectra were computed using a physics-based ground motion approach to assess the seismic hazards and consequently the designation of seismic resistant structure for the proposed sites to be able to assess the seismic hazards for the candidate sites. Of the seven nominated sites, two sites are found to have the best measurements and might be considered future sites for the new Egyptian Astronomical telescope. The first site is located in the south of the Sinai peninsula, while the second one is located in the Red Sea mountains region.

Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) algorithms, which run on noisy quantum computers should be carefully designed to boost the output state fidelity. While several compilation approaches have been proposed to minimize circuit errors, they often omit the detailed circuit structure information that does not affect the circuit depth or the gate count. In the presence of spatial variation in the error rate of the quantum gates, adjusting the circuit structure can play a major role in mitigating errors. In this paper, we exploit the freedom of gate reordering based on the commutation rules to show the impact of gate error propagation paths on the output state fidelity of the quantum circuit, propose advanced predictive techniques to project the success rate of the circuit, and develop a new compilation phase post-quantum circuit mapping to improve its reliability. Our proposed approaches have been validated using a variety of quantum circuits with different success metrics, which are executed on IBM quantum computers. Our results show that rescheduling quantum gates based on their error propagation paths can significantly improve the fidelity of the quantum circuit in the presence of variable gate error rates.

Neutronics calculations have been performed of the MYRRHA ADS Reactor with a thorium-based fuel mixture, using the simulation programs MCNPX (Waters, 2002) and Geant4 (Agostinelli, 2003). Thorium is often considered for ADS systems, and this is the first evaluation of the possibilities for thorium based fuels using a reactor design which has been developed in detail. It also extends the application of the widely-used Geant4 program to the geometry of MYRRHA and to thorium. An asymptotic 232Th/233U mixture is considered, together with the standard MOX fuel and a possible 232Th/MOX starter. Neutron fluxes and spectra are calculated at several regions in the core: fuel cells, IPS cells and the two (Mo and Ac) isotope production cells. These are then used for simple calculations of the fuel evolution and of the potential for the incineration of minor actinide waste. Results from the two programs agree and support each other and show that the thorium fuel is viable, and has good evolution/breeding properties, and that minor actinide incineration, though it will not take place on a significant scale, will be demonstrable.

Intermediate-scale quantum technologies provide new opportunities for scientific discovery, yet they also pose the challenge of identifying suitable problems that can take advantage of such devices in spite of their present-day limitations. In solid-state materials, fractional quantum Hall (FQH) phases continue to attract attention as hosts of emergent geometrical excitations analogous to gravitons, resulting from the non-perturbative interactions between the electrons. However, the direct observation of such excitations remains a challenge. Here, we identify a quasi-one-dimensional model that captures the geometric properties and graviton dynamics of FQH states. We then simulate geometric quench and the subsequent graviton dynamics on the IBM quantum computer using an optimally-compiled Trotter circuit with bespoke error mitigation. Moreover, we develop an efficient, optimal-control-based variational quantum algorithm that can efficiently simulate graviton dynamics in larger systems. Our results open a new avenue for studying the emergence of gravitons in a new class of tractable models on the existing quantum hardware.

In this study, we present a spectroscopic analysis of the bright Be star kappa Dra. Two independent sets of radial velocity velocities (RV) measurements were obtained by direct measurement and using a line profile disentangling technique. Using a combination of the solutions found by the codes FOTEL and KOREL, we revisited the binary nature of kappa Dra and derived improved orbital elements. From the RVs of the Balmer lines and also from some strong metallic lines we found that all RVs variations are phase-locked with the orbital period. V/R variations were obtained for H_alpha, H_beta, H_gamma and some other photospheric lines and they are found to be phase-locked with the orbital motion. A moving absorption bump superimposed over the H_alpha and H_beta emission line profiles was detected. The orbital solutions for kappa Dra were derived assuming a circular orbit with a period 61.5549 day and K = 6.81 km/s . The question of the line profile variability was discussed. We attempted to search for absorption or emission lines of the unresolved secondary component, we failed to find them.

Stress research is a rapidly emerging area in thefield of electroencephalography (EEG) based signal processing. The use of EEG as an objective measure for cost effective andpersonalized stress management becomes important in particularsituations such as the non-availability of mental health facilities. In this study, long-term stress is classified using baseline EEGsignal recordings. The labelling for the stress and control groupsis performed using two methods (i) the perceived stress scalescore and (ii) expert evaluation. The frequency domain featuresare extracted from five-channel EEG recordings in addition tothe frontal and temporal alpha and beta asymmetries. The alphaasymmetry is computed from four channels and used as a feature.Feature selection is also performed using a t-test to identifystatistically significant features for both stress and control groups. We found that support vector machine is best suited to classifylong-term human stress when used with alpha asymmetry asa feature. It is observed that expert evaluation based labellingmethod has improved the classification accuracy up to 85.20%.Based on these results, it is concluded that alpha asymmetry maybe used as a potential bio-marker for stress classification, when labels are assigned using expert evaluation.

In this study, an early fire detection algorithm has been proposed based on low cost array sensing system, utilizing gas sensors, dust particles and ambient sensors such as temperature and humidity sensor. The odor or smell-print emanated from various fire sources and building construction materials at early stage are measured. For this purpose, odor profile data from five common fire sources and three common building construction materials were used to develop the classification model. Normalized feature extractions of the smell print data were performed before subjected to prediction classifier. These features represent the odor signals in the time domain. The obtained features undergo the proposed multi-stage feature selection technique and lastly, further reduced by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a dimension reduction technique. The hybrid PCA-PNN based approach has been applied on different datasets from in-house developed system and the portable electronic nose unit. Experimental classification results show that the dimension reduction process performed by PCA has improved the classification accuracy and provided high reliability, regardless of ambient temperature and humidity variation, baseline sensor drift, the different gas concentration level and exposure towards different heating temperature range.

Reversible logic has two main properties. First, the number of inputs is equal to the number of outputs. Second, it implements a one-to-one mapping; i.e., one can reconstruct the inputs from the outputs. These properties enable its applications in building quantum computing architectures.
In this paper, we study reverse engineering of reversible logic circuits, including reverse engineering of non-reversible functions embedded into reversible circuits. We propose the number of embeddings of non-reversible functions into a reversible circuit as the security metric for reverse engineering. We analyze the security benefits of automatic synthesis of reversible circuits. We use our proposed security metric to show that the functional synthesis approaches yield reversible circuits that are more resilient to reverse engineering than the structural synthesis approaches. Finally, we propose scrambling of the inputs and outputs of a reversible circuit to thwart reverse engineering.

We studied both components of a slightly overlooked visual binary HR 1847 spectroscopically to determine its basic physical and orbital parameters. Basic stellar parameters were determined by comparing synthetic spectra to the observed echelle spectra, which cover both the optical and near-IR regions. New observations of this system used the Ondřejov and Rozhen 2-m telescopes and their coudé spectrographs. Radial velocities from individual spectra were measured and then analysed with the code {\FOTEL} to determine orbital parameters. The spectroscopic orbit of HR 1847A is presented for the first time. It is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a B-type primary, a period of 719.79 days, and a highly eccentric orbit with e=0.7. We confirmed that HR 1847B is a Be star. Its Hαemission significantly decreased from 2003 to 2008. Both components have a spectral type B7-8 and luminosity class IV-V.

We present an analysis of new spectroscopic observations of the bright Be star kappa Dra obtained at the Ondrejov observatory during 1992 - 2003 and UBV photometric observations secured at several observatories. The fundamental stellar parameters have been obtained from a comparison with a grid of NLTE model atmospheres. The best fit was found for Teff=14000K, log g = 3.5, and v sin i = 170km/s. These values together with a Hipparcos parallax lead to a stellar mass M=4.8+-0.8 M_solar and radius R=6.4+-0.5 R_solar. Long-term variations of kappa Dra were analysed using measurements of equivalent widths, central intensities, peak intensities of emission lines and emission peak velocity differences for H-alpha, H-beta, H-gamma, H-delta, and some helium, silicon, and iron lines. It turned out that the previously reported period of 23 years in the variation of the emission strength is probably a cyclic, not a strictly periodic phenomenon. An attempt to find out a period from all available records of the H-beta emission strength led to a value of 8044+-167 days (22.0 years) but the phase plots show that each cycle has a different shape and length. For the moment, the nature and origin of the disk around kappa Dra still remains unknown. From the comparison of the electronic spectra obtained at different phases of the long-term cycle and synthetic spectra it appears that there are no detectable changes in the photospheric part of the Balmer lines related to variations in the Balmer emission strength which could be attributed to an extended photosphere corresponding to inner parts of the disk, optically thick in continuum.
