The method proposed in [I.R. Khairulin et al., JETP Letters 117(9), 652 (2023)] for converting the linearly polarized radiation of high-order harmonics of an optical field into the circularly polarized in an optically modulated active medium of a plasma-based X-ray laser has been de-veloped. This method is extended to the case of finite width of spectral lines (finite pulse dura-tion) of high harmonic radiation and nonlinear interaction of radiation with matter. The trans-formation of the polarization of the harmonic field is achieved by introducing a phase shift of π/2 between its polarization components, parallel and orthogonal to the polarization of the modulating field, through resonant dispersion on the spectral wings of the induced gain lines of the active medium and is accompanied by an increase in the power of high harmonics. It is shown that for harmonics with a finite bandwidth, the polarization of the output radiation is non-uniform in time. The reasons for such non-uniformity are analyzed and the conditions for its minimization are found. The influence of nonlinearity and amplified spontaneous radiation of the active medium on the high-harmonic polarization is investigated. The possibilities for the experimental implementation of this effect in a neon-like active medium of a plasma X-ray laser based on Ti12+ ions with an unperturbed wavelength of the inverted transition at 32.6 nm are analyzed.

In the present paper we describe this process in detail both for a single harmonic component and a sub-femtosecond pulse train formed by a set of harmonics. We derive the analytical theory and describe both analytically and numerically the evolution of the high-harmonic field during its propagation through the medium. We discuss also the possibility of an experimental implementation of the suggested technique in an active medium of an X-ray laser based on neon-like Ti^{12+} ions irradiated by an IR laser field with a wavelength of 3.9 microns.

We present a numerical study of the resonant high harmonic generation by tin ions in an elliptically-polarised laser field along with a simple analytical model revealing the mechanism and main features of this process. We show that the yield of the resonant harmonics behaves anomalously with the fundamental field ellipticity, namely the drop of the resonant harmonic intensity with the fundamental ellipticity is much slower than for high harmonics generated through the nonresonant mechanism. Moreover, we study the polarisation properties of high harmonics generated in elliptically-polarised field and show that the ellipticity of harmonics near the resonance is significantly higher than for ones far off the resonance. This introduces a prospective way to create a source of the quasi-monochromatic coherent XUV with controllable ellipticity potentially up to circular.

We derive the analytical theory describing the process of sub-femtosecond pulse formation from a quasi-monochromatic seeding extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation, which propagates in active medium of a hydrogen-like plasma-based X-ray laser dressed by a strong infrared laser field. We discuss the ultimate capabilities and limitations of this process on the basis of the derived analytical solution and extensive numerical studies for the case of Li2+ plasma-based X-ray laser with a carrier wavelength 13.5nm. We analyze the role of plasma dispersion and find the optimal conditions for the formation of attosecond pulses with the highest contrast. Under the optimal conditions, the influence of amplified spontaneous emission from the active medium is negligible. The peak intensity of the produced XUV pulses can exceed 10^10-10^11 W/cm^2, while the duration of pulses varies in the range of 400-600 as.

We present a study of the possibility to significantly enhance the efficiency of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) using few-cycle optical waveforms obtained by superposing two laser pulses of different color delayed optimally relative to each other. Special attention is paid to the dynamics of the depopulation of atomic states, which, one the one hand, promotes electrons to the continuum to take part in the high-energy photon emission, but, on the other hand, depletes the nonlinear medium. The use of the waveforms proposed here gives extra flexibility to control both the bound-state depopulation and the electron acceleration in the continuum. We demonstrate that the approach proposed here allows to increase by up to order of magnitude the efficiency of optical frequency conversion into sub-keV or few-keV photon energy ranges. High efficiency of HHG in optimal conditions is explained by the peculiarities of the photoelectron dynamics, which are in this case characterized by a combination of high-probability ejection of the electron responsible for the highest-order harmonic production and its subsequent strong acceleration accompanied by a relatively low probability of the bound-state depletion during the time interval between ionization and recollision.
