This paper extends the fundamental theorem of Bloch-Ochiai to the context of C-pairs: If (X, D) is a C-pair with large irregularity, then no entire C-curve in X is ever dense. In its most general form, the paper's main theorem applies to normal Kähler pairs with arbitrary singularities. However, it also strengthens known results for compact Kähler manifolds without boundary, as it applies to some settings that the classic Bloch-Ochiai theorem does not address.
The proof builds on work of Kawamata, Ueno, and Noguchi, recasting parabolic Nevanlinna theory as a "Nevanlinna theory for C-pairs". We hope the approach might be of independent interest.

A new method is proposed to predict the topological properties of one-dimensional periodic structures in wave physics, including quantum mechanics. From Bloch waves, a unique complex valued function is constructed, exhibiting poles and zeros. The sequence of poles and zeros of this function is a topological invariant that can be linked to the Berry-Zak phase. Since the characterization of the topological properties is done in the complex plane, it can easily be extended to the case of non-hermitian systems. The sequence of poles and zeros allows to predict topological phase transitions.

The scattering of scalar waves by a set of scatterers is considered. It is proven that the scattered field can be represented as an integral supported by any smooth surface enclosing the scatterers. This is a generalization of the series expansion over spherical harmonics and spherical Bessel functions for spherical geometries. More precisely, given a set of scatterers, the field scattered by any subset can be expressed as an integral over any smooth surface enclosing the given subset alone. It is then possible to solve the multiple scattering problem by using this integral representation instead of an expansion over spherical harmonics. This result is used to develop an extension of the Fast Multipole Method in order to deal with subsets that are not enclosed within non-intersecting balls.

In this article, we conduct comparative studies on the optical properties of metallic carbon nanotubes. Firstly, we compare the complex dielectric constant predicted by an analytical model, the Linear Surface Conductivity Model, with \textit{ab initio} calculations based on Density Functional Theory. We highlight the similarities and differences between these two models, with the major discrepancy being a significantly different behavior of the plasma frequency with respect to the carbon nanotube diameter. In the second step, we compare the predictions of these models with experimental measurements of the dielectric function. We demonstrate that the screened plasma frequency serves as a reliable quantifier for distinguishing between the two models. In conclusion, we find that the \textit{ab initio} calculations more accurately describe the optical properties of metallic carbon nanotubes compared to the commonly used Linear Surface Conductivity Model.

In this context, we introduce an algebra of orbifold jet differentials and their sections. These jet sections can be seen as algebraic differential operators acting on germs of curves, with meromorphic coefficients, whose poles are supported by D and multiplicities are bounded by the ramification indices of the components of D. We estimate precisely the curvature tensor of the corresponding directed structure V[D] in the general orbifold case-with a special attention to the compact case D = 0 and to the logarithmic situation where the ramification indices are infinite. Using holomorphic Morse inequalities on the tautological line bundle of the projectivized orbifold Green-Griffiths bundle, we finally obtain effective sufficient conditions for the existence of global orbifold jet differentials.

Campana raised the question if one can replace the Kodaira dimension by the numerical dimension in this characterization. We answer partially this question showing that a projective manifold admitting a rank one coherent subsheaf of the cotangent bundle with numerical dimension 1 is not special. We also establish the analytic characterization with the non-existence of Zariski dense entire curve and the arithmetic version with non-potential density in the (split) function field setting. Finally, we conclude with a few comments for higher codimensional foliations which may provide some evidence towards a generalization of the aforementioned results.

Inspired by the computation of the Kodaira dimension of symmetric powers Xm of a complex projective variety X of dimension n $\ge$ 2 by Arapura and Archava, we study their analytic and algebraic hyperbolic properties. First we show that Xm is special if and only if X is special (except when the core of X is a curve). Then we construct dense entire curves in (suf-ficiently hig) symmetric powers of K3 surfaces and product of curves. We also give a criterion based on the positivity of jet differentials bundles that implies pseudo-hyperbolicity of symmetric powers. As an application, we obtain the Kobayashi hyperbolicity of symmetric powers of generic projective hypersur-faces of sufficiently high degree. On the algebraic side, we give a criterion implying that subvarieties of codimension $\le$ n -- 2 of symmetric powers are of general type. This applies in particular to varieties with ample cotangent bundles. Finally, based on a metric approach we study symmetric powers of ball quotients.

In this work, we investigate the positivity of logarithmic and orbifold cotangent bundles along hyperplane arrangements in projective spaces. We show that a very interesting example given by Noguchi (as early as in 1986) can be pushed further to a very great extent. Key ingredients of our approach are the use of Fermat covers and the production of explicit global symmetric differentials. This allows us to obtain some new results in the vein of several classical results of the literature on hyperplane arrangements. These seem very natural using the modern point of view of augmented base loci, and working in Campana's orbifold category. As an application of our results, we derive two new orbifold hyperbolicity results, going beyond some classical results of value distribution theory.

This paper presents investigations on the generalized laws of refraction and reflection for metasurfaces made of diffractive elements. It introduces a phenomenological model that reproduces all the features of the experiments dedicated to the generalized Snell-Descartes laws. Our main finding is that the generalized laws of refrac-tion and reflection as previously stated have to be modified in order to describe the propagation of light through metasurfaces made of diffractive elements. We provide the appropriate laws that take a different form depending on the properties of the metasurface. Our models apply to both periodic and non-periodic metasurfaces. We show that the generalized law of refraction strictly exists only for linear-phase profiles and sawtooth-wave phase profiles under constraints that we specify. It can be approximatively defined for non-linear phase profiles. This document includes the article as the part I and the supporting informations as the part II.

Realizing single photon sources emitting in the telecom band on silicon substrates is essential to reach complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible devices that secure communications over long distances. In this work, we propose the monolithic growth of needlelike tapered InAs/InP quantum dot-nanowires (QD-NWs) on silicon substrates with a small taper angle and a nanowire diameter tailored to support a single mode waveguide. Such a NW geometry is obtained by a controlled balance over axial and radial growths during the gold-catalyzed growth of the NWs by molecular beam epitaxy. This allows us to investigate the impact of the taper angle on the emission properties of a single InAs/InP QD-NW. At room temperature, a Gaussian far-field emission profile in the telecom O-band with a 30° beam divergence angle is demonstrated from a single InAs QD embedded in a 2° tapered InP NW. Moreover, single photon emission is observed at cryogenic temperature for an off-resonant excitation and the best result, $g^2(0) = 0.05$, is obtained for a 7° tapered NW. This all-encompassing study paves the way for the monolithic growth on silicon of an efficient single photon source in the telecom band based on InAs/InP QD-NWs.

Lattices of compatibly embedded finite fields are useful in computer algebra systems for managing many extensions of a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ at once. They can also be used to represent the algebraic closure $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$, and to represent all finite fields in a standard manner. The most well known constructions are Conway polynomials, and the Bosma-Cannon-Steel framework used in Magma. In this work, leveraging the theory of the Lenstra-Allombert isomorphism algorithm, we generalize both at the same time. Compared to Conway polynomials, our construction defines a much larger set of field extensions from a small pre-computed table; however it is provably as inefficient as Conway polynomials if one wants to represent all field extensions, and thus yields no asymptotic improvement for representing $\bar{\mathbb{F}}_p$. Compared to Bosma-Cannon-Steel lattices, it is considerably more efficient both in computation time and storage: all algorithms have at worst quadratic complexity, and storage is linear in the number of represented field extensions and their degrees. Our implementation written in C/Flint/Julia/Nemo shows that our construction in indeed practical.

This note is a reply to the paper arXiv:1801.05590: "The equivalence of the Power-Zineau-Woolley picture and the Poincar{é} gauge from the very first principles" by G. K{ó}nya, et al.
In a recent paper [2], we have shown that the Power-Zienau-Woolley Hamiltonian does not derived from the minimal-coupling hamiltonian with the help of a gauge transformation. This result has been challenged by G. K{ó}nya, al. in a comment 1 where the authors claim the equivalence between the Power-Zienau-Woolley hamiltonian and the minimal-coupling hamiltonian in the Poincar{é} gauge. They claim that we have made one error and one wrong emphasis in our paper: The error as summarized by G. K{ó}nya al. would be: "The canonical field momentum is not gauge invariant. Equivalent transformations of the Lagrangian do change the momentum. In field theories, gauge transformations are special cases of such transformations. The electric field E is gauge invariant, but its capacity of being the canonical momentum is not. " The wrong emphasis as summarized by G.K{ó}nya al. would be: "The use of the canonical coordinate/momentum pair A p and E in Poincar{é} gauge is presented as mandatory in Rousseau and Felbacq paper, whereas as there is a certain freedom of choice in selecting this pair. Also in Poincar{é} gauge it is possible to use A c as canonical coordinate, in which case the conjugate momentum will be D. This is the most convenient choice in terms of the set of nontrivial Dirac brackets. Cf. Table 1 in G. K{ó}nya al. paper 1 for possible choices."
We do not share these conclusions and show in this reply that these statements are incorrect. Specifically, we show that under a gauge transformation, the canonical momentum $π$(x,t) conjugated to the vector potential A(x,t) is given by $π$(x,t) = --$ε$\_0 E(x,t). This happens because the Lagrangian does not contains terms proportional to $\partial$\_t $φ$ (x,t) where $φ$ (x,t) is the scalar potential. Moreover our choice of canonical variables was challenged. Actually, our set of independent variables is exactly the same as in G. K{ó}nya al. except that we do not write explicitly the dependent variables in term of the independent ones. This is one great advantage of the Dirac procedure for constrained hamiltonian.

We define and study jet bundles in the geometric orbifold category. We show that the usual arguments from the compact and the logarithmic settings do not all extend to this more general framework. This is illustrated by simple examples of orbifold pairs of general type that do not admit any global jet differential, even if some of these examples satisfy the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture. This contrasts with an important result of Demailly (2010) proving that compact varieties of general type always admit jet differentials. We illustrate the usefulness of the study of orbifold jets by establishing the hyperbolicity of some orbifold surfaces, that cannot be derived from the current techniques in Nevanlinna's theory. We also conjecture that Demailly's theorem should hold for orbifold pairs with smooth boundary divisors under a certain natural multiplicity condition, and provide some evidence towards it.

Abstract:
We study the hyperbolicity of singular quotients of bounded symmetric domains. We give effective criteria for such quotients to satisfy Green-Griffiths-Lang's conjectures in both analytic and algebraic settings. As an application, we show that Hilbert modular varieties, except for a few possible exceptions, satisfy all expected conjectures.

We addressed the carrier dynamics in so-called G-centers in silicon (consisting of substitutional-interstitial carbon pairs interacting with interstitial silicons) obtained via ion implantation into a silicon-on-insulator wafer. For this point defect in silicon emitting in the telecommunication wavelength range, we unravel the recombination dynamics by time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. More specifically, we performed detailed photoluminescence experiments as a function of excitation energy, incident power, irradiation fluence and temperature in order to study the impact of radiative and non-radiative recombination channels on the spectrum, yield and lifetime of G-centers. The sharp line emitting at 969 meV ($\sim$1280 nm) and the broad asymmetric sideband developing at lower energy share the same recombination dynamics as shown by time-resolved experiments performed selectively on each spectral component. This feature accounts for the common origin of the two emission bands which are unambiguously attributed to the zero-phonon line and to the corresponding phonon sideband. In the framework of the Huang-Rhys theory with non-perturbative calculations, we reach an estimation of 1.6$\pm$0.1 $\angstrom$ for the spatial extension of the electronic wave function in the G-center. The radiative recombination time measured at low temperature lies in the 6 ns-range. The estimation of both radiative and non-radiative recombination rates as a function of temperature further demonstrate a constant radiative lifetime. Finally, although G-centers are shallow levels in silicon, we find a value of the Debye-Waller factor comparable to deep levels in wide-bandgap materials. Our results point out the potential of G-centers as a solid-state light source to be integrated into opto-electronic devices within a common silicon platform.

This generalizes the classical result of Miyaoka on the pseudo-effectivity of $c_2$ for minimal models. As an application we give a simple solution to Kawamata's effective non-vanishing conjecture in dimension $3$, where we prove that $H^0(X, K_X+H)\neq 0$, whenever $K_X+H$ is nef and $H$ is an ample, effective, reduced Cartier divisor. Furthermore, we study Lang-Vojta's conjecture for codimension one subvarieties and prove that minimal varieties of general type have only finitely many Fano, Calabi-Yau or Abelian subvarieties of codimension one, mildly singular, whose classes belong to the movable cone.

Surface plasma waves are collective oscillations of electrons that propagate along a metal-dielectric interface. In the last ten years, several groups have reproduced fundamental quantum optics experiments with surface plasmons. Observation of single-plasmon states, waveparticle duality, preservation of entanglement of photons in plasmon-assisted transmission, and more recently, two-plasmon interference have been reported. While losses are detrimental for the observation of squeezed states, they can be seen as a new degree of freedom in the design of plasmonic devices, thus revealing new quantum interference scenarios. Here we report the observation of two-plasmon quantum interference between two freely-propagating, non-guided SPPs interfering on lossy plasmonic beamsplitters. As discussed in the article "Quantum optics of lossy beam splitters" by Barnett et al. (Phys. Rev. A 57, 2134 (1998)) , the presence of losses (scattering or absorption) relaxes constraints on the reflection and transmission factors of the beamsplitter, allowing the control of their relative phase. By using this degree of freedom, we are able to observe either coalescence or anticoalescence of identical plasmons.

Quantum metamaterials generalize the concept of metamaterials (artificial optical media) to the case when their optical properties are determined by the interplay of quantum effects in the constituent 'artificial atoms' with the electromagnetic field modes in the system. The theoretical investigation of these structures demonstrated that a number of new effects (such as quantum birefringence, strongly nonclassical states of light, etc) are to be expected, prompting the efforts on their fabrication and experimental investigation. Here we provide a summary of the principal features of quantum metamaterials and review the current state of research in this quickly developing field, which bridges quantum optics, quantum condensed matter theory and quantum information processing.

These supplementary materials detail some calculations and some experimental results related to the propagation of light in the photonic billiard. We first justify why we focus only on the rays that are transmitted through the cylinders and justify the geometrical optics approximation. Then we explain the dynamical properties of ray propagation, demonstrate that asymptotically the Lyapunov exponent grows as $λ$ $\sim$ ln t$\star$ where t$\star$ = T /R is the photonic crystal period T divided by the cylinder radius R. Finally we close these supplementary materials by presenting some experimental results demonstrating the exponential sensitivity to the initial conditions.

Next, we use it to show that the Green-Griffiths locus of any projective manifold uniformized by a bounded symmetric domain of rank greater than one is the whole manifold. These results were extended by McQuillan in his proof of the Green-Griffiths conjecture for entire curves on such surfaces. In this work, we study hyperbolic properties of minimal surfaces of general type with minimal $c_1^2$, known as Horikawa surfaces. In principle these surfaces should be the most difficult case for the above conjecture as illustrate the quintic surfaces in $\bP^3$. Using orbifold techniques, we exhibit infinitely many irreducible components of the moduli of Horikawa surfaces whose very generic member has no rational curves or even is algebraically hyperbolic. Moreover, we construct explicit examples of algebraically hyperbolic and (quasi-)hyperbolic orbifold Horikawa surfaces.

Controlling the launching efficiencies and the directionality of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and their decoupling to freely propagating light is a major goal for the development of plasmonic devices and systems. Here, we report on the design and experimental observation of a highly efficient unidirectional surface plasmon launcher composed of eleven subwavelength grooves, each with a distinct depth and width. Our observations show that, under normal illumination by a focused Gaussian beam, unidirectional SPP launching with an efficiency of at least 52% is achieved experimentally with a compact device of total length smaller than 8 μm. Reciprocally, we report that the same device can efficiently convert SPPs into a highly directive light beam emanating perpendicularly to the sample.
