A low-energy model is built to study systems such as Dirac/Weyl semimetals, according to statistical quantum electrodynamics formalism. We report that the introduction of a pseudoscalar, associated to longitudinal photons propagating along a magnetic field B, could transforms a Dirac semimetal into a Weyl semimetal with a pair of Weyl nodes for each point of Dirac. The nodes are separated by a pseudovector electric field induced dynamically along B associated to a chiral effect on the Fermi surface. A topological quantum transition is produced between a chiral-and non chiral symmetry phase. A general expression to the longitudinal magnetoconductivity is found. It provides the possibility of generalizing the usual expressions of the magnetoconductivity reported in the literature. This has a quadratic dependence on B, which is associated with a positive contribution to the magnetoconductivity. This is a prominent signature of the chiral magnetic effect in Dirac/Weyl systems in parallel electric and magnetic fields. We report a chiral effect induced by longitudinal photons associated to a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance in Dirac systems via an axial anomaly relation. We show some numerical results, and reproduced with a high level of accuracy some of the experimental results, in the low temperature region, obtained to the magnetoresistance of ZrTe5 and Na3Bi. We believe that a wide variety of these semimetals can be studied by using our general expression to the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance.

We study the role of temperature and magnetic field on the equation of state and macroscopic properties of Bose-Einstein condensate stars. These compact objects are composed of a condensed gas of interacting neutral vector bosons coupled to a uniform and constant magnetic field. We found that the main consequence of a finite temperature in the magnetized equations of state is to increase the inner pressure of the star. As a consequence, magnetized hot Bose-Einstein condensate stars are larger and heavier than their zero-temperature counterparts. However, the maximum masses obtained by the model remain almost unchanged, and the magnetic deformation of the star increases with the temperature. Besides, augmenting the temperature reduces the number of stable stars, an effect that the magnetic field enhances. The implications of our results for the star's evolution, compactness, redshift, and mass quadupolar moment are also analyzed.

We study the thermodynamic properties of a relativistic magnetized neutral vector boson gas at any temperature. By comparing the results with the low temperature and the non relativistic descriptions of this gas, we found that the fully relativistic case can be separated in two regimes according to temperature. For low temperatures, magnetic field effects dominate and the system shows a spontaneous magnetization, its pressure splits in two components and, eventually, a transversal magnetic collapse might occur. In the high temperature region, the gas behavior is led by pair production. The presence of antiparticles preserves the isotropy in the pressure, and increases the magnetization and the total pressure of the system by several orders. Astrophysical implications of those behaviors are discussed.

We study the transverse propagation of photons in a magnetized vacuum considering radiative corrections in the one-loop approximation. The dispersion equation is modified due to the magnetized photon self-energy in the transparency region ($0<ω<2m_e$). The aim of our study is to explore propagation of photons in a neutron star magnetosphere (described by magnetized vacuum). The solution of the dispersion equation is obtained in terms of analytic functions. The larger the magnetic field, the lower the phase velocity and the more the dispersion curve deviates from the light-cone. For fixed values of the frequency, we study the dependence of photon time delay with the magnetic field strength, as well as with distance. For the latter, we adopt a magnetic dipole configuration and obtain that -- contrary to the expectation, according to the traditional time delay of photons in the interstellar medium -- photons of higher energy experience a longer time delay. A discussion of potential causes of this behaviour is presented.

We study a possible mechanism for astrophysical jet production from a neutron star composed by a partially bosonized npe-gas. We obtain that the expulsion of a stable stream of matter might be triggered by the quantum magnetic collapse of one or various components of the gas, while its collimation is due to the formation of a strong self-generated magnetic field.

We study magnetic field effects on the Equations of State (EoS) and the structure of Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) stars, i.e. a compact object composed by a gas of interacting spin one bosons formed up by the pairing of two neutrons. To include the magnetic field in the thermodynamic description, we suppose that particle-magnetic field and particle-particle interactions are independent. We consider two configurations for the magnetic field: one where it constant and externally fixed, and another where it is produced by the bosons by self-magnetization. Since the magnetic field produces the splitting of pressures in the directions along and perpendicular to the magnetic axis, stable configurations of self-magnetized and magnetized BEC stars are studied using the recently found $γ$-structure equations that describe axially symmetric objects. The magnetized BEC stars are, in general spheroidal, less massive and smaller than the non-magnetic ones, being these effects more relevant at low densities. For the self-magnetized BEC stars their inner profiles of magnetic field can be computed as a function of the equatorial radii. The values obtained for the core and surface magnetic fields are in agreement with those typical of compact objects.

We study the thermodynamic properties of a neutral vector boson gas in presence of a constant magnetic field, by means of a semi-classical approach that allows to introduce the spin in the non-relativistic spectrum of the bosons. Bose-Einstein condensation is obtained and it turns out to depend on all the parameters involved in the problem: temperature, particle density and magnetic field. An spontaneous magnetization appears at low temperature as a consequence of the condensed state. The axial symmetry imposed in the system by the magnetic field presence, splits the pressure in two components, one along and another perpendicular to the magnetic axis. Under certain conditions, the perpendicular pressure becomes negative signaling that the system undergoes a transversal magnetic collapse. The spontaneous magnetization might be useful to model magnetic field production inside compact stars, while the negative pressures imposes certain limits to the temperatures and densities needed inside these objects to support a given magnetic field.

The thermodynamical properties of a neutral vector boson gas in a constant magnetic field are studied starting from the spectrum given by Proca formalism. Bose Einstein Condensation (BEC) and magnetization are obtained, for the three and one dimensional cases, in the limit of low temperatures. In three dimensions the gas undergoes a phase transition to an usual BEC in which the critical temperature depends on the magnetic field. In one dimension a diffuse condensate appears as for the charged vector boson gas. In both cases, the condensation is reached not only by decreasing the temperature but also by increasing the magnetic field. In three and one dimensions self-magnetization is possible. The anisotropy in the pressures due to axial symmetry imposed to the system by the magnetic field is also discussed. The astrophysical implications are commented.

We report the generation of a pseudovector electric current having imbalanced chirality in an electron-positron strongly magnetized gas in QED. It propagates along the external applied magnetic field B as a chiral magnetic effect in QED. It is triggered by a perturbative electric field parallel to B, associated to a pseudovector longitudinal mode propagating along B. An electromagnetic chemical potential was introduced, but our results remain valid even for vanishing chemical potential. A nonzero fermion mass was assumed, which is usually considered vanishing in the literature. In the quantum field theory formalism at finite temperature and density, an anomaly relation for the axial current was found for a medium of massive fermions. It bears some analogy to the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly. From the expression for the chiral current in terms of the photon self-energy tensor in a medium, it is obtained that electrons and positrons scattered by longitudinal photons (inside the light cone) contribute to the chiral current, as well as the pair creation due to longitudinal photons (out of light cone). In the static limit, an electric pseudovector current is obtained in the lowest Landau level

We have calculated the time damping of the photon in two particular cases: the degenerate gas as well as the diluted gas limit being both important from the Astrophysical point of view. In particular the diluted gas limit could describe the magnethosphere of neutron stars. The solutions have been used to obtain a finite Quantum Faraday angle in both limits. A resonant behavior for the Faraday angle is also obtained. To reproduce the semi-classical result for the Faraday rotation angle the weak field limit is considered.

The photon magnetic moment for radiation propagating in magnetized vacuum is defined as a pseudo-tensor quantity, proportional to the external electromagnetic field tensor. After expanding the eigenvalues of the polarization operator in powers of $k^2$, we obtain approximate dispersion equations (cubic in $k^2$), and analytic solutions for the photon magnetic moment, valid for low momentum and/or large magnetic field.
The paramagnetic photon experiences a red shift, with opposite sign than the gravitational one, which differs for parallel and perpendicular polarizations. It is due to the drain of photon transverse momentum and energy by the external field. By defining an effective transverse momentum, the constancy of the speed of light orthogonal to the field is guaranteed. We conclude that the propagation of the photon non-parallel to the magnetic behaves as if there is a quantum compression of vacuum or warp of space-time in an amount depending on its angle with regard to the field.

It is argued that such magnetic moment it cannot be a linear function of the angular momentum and that there is no room for the existence of an hypothetical perpendicular component, as recently claimed in the literature. It is discussed that in the region beyond the first threshold, where photons may decay in electron-positron pairs, the photon magnetic moment cannot be defined independently of the magnetic moment of the created pairs. It is shown that for magnetic fields large enough, the vacuum becomes unstable and decays also in electron-positron pairs.

Strange quark matter could be found in the core of neutron stars or forming strange quark stars. As is well known, these astrophysical objects are endowed with strong magnetic fields which affect the microscopic properties of matter and modify the macroscopic properties of the system. In this paper we study the role of a strong magnetic field in the thermodynamical properties of a magnetized degenerate strange quark gas, taking into account beta-equilibrium and charge neutrality. Quarks and electrons interact with the magnetic field via their electric charges and anomalous magnetic moments. In contrast to the magnetic field value of 10^19 G, obtained when anomalous magnetic moments are not taken into account, we find the upper bound B < 8.6 x 10^17 G, for the stability of the system. A phase transition could be hidden for fields greater than this value.

The rotation of the polarization vector for light propagating perpendicular to an external constant external magnetic field $B$, is calculated in quantum vacuum, where it leads to different photon eigenmodes of the magnetized photon self-energy tensor for polarizations along and orthogonal to $B$ (Cotton-Mouton effect in QED vacuum). Its analogies and differences with Faraday effect are discussed and both phenomena are calculated for a relativistic electron gas at low densities, by starting from the low energy limit of the photon self-energy eigenvalues in presence of $B$. In the Cotton-Mouton case the polarization vector describes an ellipse whose axes vary periodically from zero to a maximum value. By assuming an effective electron density of order $10^3$ cm$^{-3}$ the quantum relativistic eigenvalues lead to a rotation of the polarization plane compatible with some of the limit values reported by PVLAS experiments. Other consequences, which are interesting for astrophysics, are also discussed.

We consider self-magnetization of charged and neutral vector bosons bearing a magnetic moment in a gas and in vacuum. For charged vector bosons (W bosons) a divergence of the magnetization in both the medium and the electroweak vacuum occurs for the critical field B=B_{wc}=m_{w}^{2}/e. For B>B_{wc} the system is unstable. This behavior suggests the occurrence of a phase transition at B=B_{c}, where the field is self-consistently maintained. This mechanism actually prevents $B$ from reaching the critical value B_{c}. For virtual neutral vector bosons bearing an anomalous magnetic moment, the ground state has a similar behavior for B=B_{nbc}=m_{nb}^{2}/q . The magnetization in the medium is associated to a Bose-Einstein condensate and we conjecture a similar condensate occurs also in the case of vacuum.
The model is applied to virtual electron-positron pairs bosonization in a magnetic field B \sim B_{pc}\lesssim 2m_{e}^{2}/e, where m_e is the electron mass. This would lead also to vacuum self-magnetization in QED, where in both cases the symmetry breaking is due to a condensate of quasi-massless particles.

We discuss the standard approach to the problem of the low momentum limit of the spectrum for a weakly interacting Bose gas. The Bogoliubov's spectrum is shown to be obtained as a Goldstone mode thanks to the introduction of a chemical potential $μ$. This procedure has, however, difficulties since the breaking of the gauge symmetry implies that the corresponding chemical potential must be taken as zero, unless it is introduced before breaking the symmetry. But if this is done, after the symmetry breaking $μ$ loses its meaning as a chemical potential. An alternative two-mode solution is suggested having two modes, one of them being the free-particle quadratic in momentum spectrum, the second bearing a gap. This gap leads to a $λ$-type behavior of the specific heat near the critical temperature.

It is shown that due to radiative corrections a photon having a non vanishing component of its momentum perpendicular to it, bears a non-zero magnetic moment. All modes of propagation of the polarization operator in one loop approximation are discussed and in this field regime the dispersion equation and the corresponding magnetic moment are derived. Near the first thresholds of cyclotron resonance the photon magnetic moment has a peak larger than the electron anomalous magnetic moment. Related to this magnetic moment, the arising of some sort of photon "dynamical mass" and a gyromagnetic ratio are discussed. These latter results might be interesting in an astrophysical context.

Our aim is to study the electron-positron vacuum pressures in presence of a strong magnetic field $B$. To that end, we obtain a general energy-momentum tensor, depending on external parameters, which in the zero temperature and zero density limit leads to vacuum expressions which are approximation-independent. Anisotropic pressures arise, and in the tree approximation of the magnetic field case, the pressure along $B$ is positive, whereas perpendicular to $B$ it is negative. Due to the common axial symmetry, the formal analogy with the Casimir effect is discussed, for which in addition to the usual negative pressure perpendicular to the plates, there is a positive pressure along the plates. The formal correspondence between the Casimir and black body energy-momentum tensors is analyzed. The fermion hot vacuum behavior in a magnetic field is also briefly discussed.

Quark matter is expected to exist in the interior of compact stellar objects as neutron stars or even the more exotic strange stars, based on the Bodmer-Witten conjecture. Bare strange quark stars and (normal) strange quark-matter stars, those possessing a baryon (electron-supported) crust, are hypothesized as good candidates to explain the properties of a set of peculiar stellar sources as the enigmatic X-ray source RX J1856.5-3754, some pulsars as PSR B1828-11 and PSR B1642-03, and the anomalous X-ray pulsars and soft gamma-ray repeaters. In the MIT bag model, quarks are treated as a degenerate Fermi gas confined to a region of space having a vacuum energy density $B_{bag}$ (the Bag constant). In this note, we modif{}y the MIT Bag Model by including the electromagnetic interaction. We also show that this version of the MIT model implies the anisotropy of the Bag pressure due to the presence of the magnetic field. The equations of state of degenerate quarks gases are studied in the presence of ultra strong magnetic fields. The behavior of a system made-up of quarks having (or not) anomalous magnetic moment is reviewed. A structural instability is found, which is related to the anisotropic nature of the pressures in this highly magnetized matter. The conditions for the collapse of this system are obtained and compared to a previous model of neutron stars build-up on a neutron gas having anomalous magnetic moment.

We study the non relativistic limit of the charge conjugation operation $\cal C$ in the context of the Dirac equation coupled to an electromagnetic field. The limit is well defined and, as in the relativistic case, $\cal C$, $\cal P$ (parity) and $\cal T$ (time reversal) are the generators of a matrix group isomorphic to a semidirect sum of the dihedral group of eight elements and $\Z_2$. The existence of the limit is supported by an argument based in quantum field theory. Also, and most important, the limit exists in the context of galilean relativity. Finally, if one complexifies the Lorentz group and therefore the galilean spacetime $x_μ$, then the explicit form of the matrix for $\cal C$ allows to interpret it, in this context, as the complex conjugation of the spatial coordinates: $\vec{x} \to \vec{x}^*$. This result is natural in a fiber bundle description.

The problem of a condensate of a relativistic neutral vector boson gas constituted of particles bearing a magnetic moment is discussed. Such a vector boson system is expected to be formed either by parallel spin-pairing of neutrons in a sufficiently strong magnetic field, or by neutral atoms under specific conditions of magnetic field strength and density. A strong self-magnetization arises due to a Bose-Einstein-like condensation. Then the system, which may resemble the superfluid said to exist in the core of neutron stars, becomes more unstable under transverse collapse than the ordinary fermion gas. In the nonrelativistic limit of laboratory conditions, an analogy with the behavior of exploding Bose-Einstein condensates for critical values of magnetic field strength and particle density; reported by several authors, is briefly discussed.

We study the electron-positron vacuum in a strong magnetic field $B$ in parallel with Casimir effect. Use is made of the energy-momentum tensor, taken as the zero temperature and zero density limit of the relativistic quantum statistical tensor. In both magnetic field and Casimir cases it is shown the arising of anisotropic pressures. In the first case the pressure transversal to the field $B$ is negative, whereas along $B$ an usual positive pressure arises. Similarly, in addition to the usual negative Casimir pressure perpendicular to the plates, the existence of a positive pressure along the plates is predicted. The anisotropic pressures suggests a flow of the virtual particles in both cases. By assuming regions of the universe having random orientation of the lines of force, cosmological consequences are discussed in the magnetic field case.

For critical fields the magnetic pressure may produce the vanishing of the equatorial pressure of the neutron gas. Taking it as a model for neutron stars, the outcome could be a transverse collapse of the star. This fixes a limit to the fields to be observable in stable neutron star pulsars as a function of their density. The final structure left over after the implosion might be a mixed phase of nucleons and meson condensate, a strange star, or a highly distorted black hole or black "cigar", but no any magnetar, if viewed as a super strongly magnetized neutron star. However, we do not exclude the possibility of a supersotrong magnetic fields arising in supernova explosions which lead directly to strange stars.
