Evidence for antiferromagnetism coexisting with charge order in the trilayer cuprate HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+ δ}$
Abstract: Multilayered cuprates possess not only the highest superconducting temperature transition but also offer a unique platform to study disorder-free CuO$_2$ planes and the interplay between competing orders with superconductivity. Here, we study the underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{8+ δ}$ and we report the first quantum oscillation and Hall effect measurements in magnetic field up… ▽ More

The Photon Hall Pinwheel, Radiation of Angular Momentum by a Diffusing Magneto-optical Medium
Abstract: We consider an optically thick spherical agglomerate of magneto-optical scatterers with a central isotropic, unpolarized light source, placed in a homogeneous magnetic field. The Photon Hall Effect induces a rotating Poynting vector, both inside and outside the medium. We show that electromagnetic (orbital) angular momentum leaks out and induces a torque proportional to the injection power of the… ▽ More

Nuclear magnetic resonance signature of the spin-nematic phase in LiCuVO$_{4}$ at high magnetic fields
Abstract: We report a 51V nuclear magnetic resonance investigation of the frustrated spin-1/2 chain compound LiCuVO4, performed in pulsed magnetic fields and focused on high-field phases up to 55 T. For the crystal orientations H // c and H // b we find a narrow field region just below the magnetic saturation where the local magnetization remains uniform and homogeneous, while its value is field dependent.… ▽ More

Abstract: We have developed a pulsed magnet system with panoramic access for synchrotron x-ray diffraction in magnetic fields up to 31T and at low temperature down to 1.5 K. The apparatus consists of a split-pair magnet, a liquid nitrogen bath to cool the pulsed coil, and a helium cryostat allowing sample temperatures from 1.5 up to 250 K. Optical manipulation of the exciton charge state in single layer tungsten disulfide
Abstract: Raman scattering and photoluminescence (PL) emission are used to investigate a single layer of tungsten disulfide (WS$_{2}$) obtained by exfoliating n-type bulk crystals. Direct gap emission with both neutral and charged exciton recombination is observed in the low temperature PL spectra. The ratio between the trion and exciton emission can be tuned simply by varying the excitation power. Moreover… ▽ More

A single-oscillator quantum model for magnetochiral birefringence
Abstract: We derive an analytical expression for the magnetochiral birefringence of a dilute diamagnetic chiral molecular medium subjet to a constant magnetic field. We use the single-oscillator model of Condon et al. [1, 2] to describe the optical properties of the individual molecules. The result is a function of the refractive index and the rotatory power. This result is compared to experimental data.

High magnetic field reveals the nature of excitons in a single GaAs/AlAs core/shell nanowire
Abstract: Magneto-photoluminescence measurements of individual zinc-blende GaAs/AlAs core/shell nanowires are reported. At low temperature a strong emission line at 1.507 eV is observed under low power (nW) excitation. Measurements performed in high magnetic field allowed us to detect in this emission several lines associated with excitons bound to defect pairs. Such lines were observed before in epitaxial… ▽ More

Casimir Momentum of a Chiral Molecule in a Magnetic Field
Abstract: In a classical description, a neutral, polarizable object acquires a kinetic momentum when exposed to crossed electric and magnetic fields. In the presence of only a magnetic field no such momentum exists classically, although it is symmetry-allowed for an object lacking mirror symmetry. We perform a full QED calculation to show that the quantum vacuum coupled to a chiral molecule provides a kinet… ▽ More

High frequency magnetic oscillations of the organic metal $θ$-(ET)$_4$ZnBr$_4$(C$_6$H$_4$Cl$_2$) in pulsed magnetic field of up to 81 T
Abstract: De Haas-van Alphen oscillations of the organic metal $θ$-(ET)$_4$ZnBr$_4$(C$_6$H$_4$Cl$_2$) are studied in pulsed magnetic fields up to 81 T. The long decay time of the pulse allows determining reliable field-dependent amplitudes of Fourier components with frequencies up to several kiloteslas. The Fourier spectrum is in agreement with the model of a linear chain of coupled orbits. In this model, a… ▽ More

Negative experimental evidence for magneto-orbital dichroism - supplemental information
Abstract: A light beam can carry both spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM). SAM is commonly evidenced by circular dichroism (CD) experiments {\em i. e.} differential absorption of left and right-handed circularly polarized light. Recent experiments, supported by theoretical work, indicate that the corresponding effect with OAM instead of SAM is not observed in chiral matter. Isot… ▽ More

Observation of the intrinsic Abraham force in time-varying magnetic and electric fields
Abstract: The Abraham force exerted by a time-dependent electromagnetic field on neutral, polarizable matter has two contributions. The one induced by a time-varying magnetic field and a static electric field is reported here for the first time. We discuss our results in the context of the radiative momentum in matter. QED Corrections to the Electromagnetic Abraham Force. Casimir Momentum of the Hydrogen atom?
Abstract: We develop a QED approach to find the contribution of the quantum vacuum to the electromagnetic Abraham force. Semi-classical theories predict diverging contributions from the quantum vacuum. We show that the divergencies disappear by Kramers-Bethe mass-renormalization. The finite remainder is compared to the relativistic corrections to the Abraham force. This work generalizes an earlier paper [1]… ▽ More

Transverse Momentum Transfer in Atom-Light Scattering
Abstract: We predict a photon Hall effect in the optical cross-section of atomic hydrogen, which is caused by the interference between an electric quadrupole transition and an electric dipole transition from the ground state to $3D_{3/2}$ and $3P_{3/2}$. This induces a magneto-transverse acceleration comparable to a fraction of $g$. In atoms with a two level electric dipole transition, a much smaller transv… ▽ More

Universal magnetic structure of the half-magnetization phase in Cr-based spinels
Abstract: Using an elastic neutron scattering technique under a pulsed magnetic field up to 30 T, we determined the magnetic structure in the half-magnetization plateau phase in the spinel CdCr$_2$O$_4$. The magnetic structure has a cubic $P4_3$32 symmetry, which is the same as that observed in HgCr$_2$O$_4$.
