The mixed-valent iridate Ba3InIr2O9 has been discussed as a promising candidate for quantum spin-liquid behavior. The compound exhibits Ir$^{4.5+}$ ions in face-sharing IrO6 octahedra forming Ir2O9 dimers with three t2g holes per dimer. Our results establish Ba3InIr2O9 as a cluster Mott insulator. Strong intra-dimer hopping delocalizes the three t2g holes in quasi-molecular dimer states while inter-dimer charge fluctuations are suppressed by Coulomb repulsion. The magnetism of Ba3InIr2O9 emerges from spin-orbit entangled quasi-molecular moments with yet unexplored interactions, opening up a new route to unconventional magnetic properties of 5d compounds. Using single-crystal x-ray diffraction we find the monoclinic space group C2/c already at room temperature. Dielectric spectroscopy shows insulating behavior. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) reveals a rich excitation spectrum below 1.5 eV with a sinusoidal dynamical structure factor that unambiguously demonstrates the quasi-molecular character of the electronic states. Below 0.3 eV, we observe a series of excitations. According to exact diagonalization calculations, such low-energy excitations reflect the proximity of Ba3InIr2O9 to a hopping-induced phase transition based on the condensation of a quasi-molecular spin-orbit exciton. The dimer ground state roughly hosts two holes in a bonding j=1/2 orbital and the third hole in a bonding j=3/2 orbital.

Characterization of complexity within the sociological interpretation has resulted in a large number of notions, which are relevant in different situations. From the statistical mechanics point of view, these notions resemble entropy. In a recent work, intriguing non-monotonous properties were observed in an opinion dynamics Sznajd model. These properties were found to be consequences of the hierarchical organization assumed for the system, though their nature remained unexplained. In the present work we bring an unified entropical framework that provides a deeper understanding of those system features. By perfoming numerical simulations, the system track probabilistic dependence on the initial structures is quantified in terms of entropy. Several entropical regimes are unveiled. The myriad of possible system outputs is enhanced within a maximum impredictability regime. A mutual structural weakness of the initial parties could be associated to this regime, fostering the emergence of a third position.

In the quest for realizations of quantum spin liquids, the exploration of Kitaev materials - spin-orbit entangled Mott insulators with strong bond-directional exchanges - has taken center stage. However, in these materials the local spin-orbital j=1/2 moments typically show long-range magnetic order at low temperature, thus defying the formation of a spin-liquid ground state. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), we here report on a proximate spin liquid regime with clear fingerprints of Kitaev physics in the magnetic excitations of the honeycomb iridates alpha-Li2IrO3 and Na2IrO3. We observe a broad continuum of magnetic excitations that persists up to at least 300K, more than an order of magnitude larger than the magnetic ordering temperatures. We prove the magnetic character of this continuum by an analysis of the resonance behavior. RIXS measurements of the dynamical structure factor for energies within the continuum show that dynamical spin-spin correlations are restricted to nearest neighbors. Notably, these spectroscopic observations are also present in the magnetically ordered state for excitation energies above the conventional magnon excitations. Phenomenologically, our data agree with inelastic neutron scattering results on the related honeycomb compound RuCl3, establishing a common ground for a proximate Kitaev spin-liquid regime in these materials.

Young's archetypal double-slit experiment forms the basis for modern diffraction techniques: the elastic scattering of waves yields an interference pattern that captures the real-space structure. Here, we report on an inelastic incarnation of Young's experiment and demonstrate that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measures interference patterns which reveal the symmetry and character of electronic excited states in the same way as elastic scattering does for the ground state. A prototypical example is provided by the quasi-molecular electronic structure of insulating Ba3CeIr2O9 with structural Ir dimers and strong spin-orbit coupling. The double 'slits' in this resonant experiment are the highly localized core levels of the two Ir atoms within a dimer. The clear double-slit-type sinusoidal interference patterns that we observe allow us to characterize the electronic excitations, demonstrating the power of RIXS interferometry to unravel the electronic structure of solids containing, e.g., dimers, trimers, ladders, or other superstructures.

The local j=1/2 moments form an fcc lattice and are found to order antiferromagnetically at $T_N$=14K, more than an order of magnitude below the Curie-Weiss temperature. Model calculations show that the geometric frustration of the fcc Heisenberg antiferromagnet is further enhanced by a next-nearest neighbor exchange, indicated by ab initio theory. Magnetic order is driven by a bond-directional Kitaev exchange and by local distortions via a strong magneto-elastic effect - both effects are typically not expected for j=1/2 compounds making Ba2CeIrO6 a riveting example for the rich physics of spin-orbit entangled Mott insulators.

The deterministic KPZ equation has been recently formulated as a gradient flow, in a nonequilibrium potential (NEP) \[Φ[h(\mathbf{x},t)]=\int\mathrm{d}\mathbf{x}\left[\fracν{2}(\nabla h)^2-\fracλ{2}\int_{h_0(\mathbf{x},0)}^{h(\mathbf{x},t)}\mathrm{d}ψ(\nablaψ)^2\right].\] This NEP---which provides at time $t$ the landscape where the stochastic dynamics of $h(\mathbf{x},t)$ takes place---is however…

After pinpointing some consequences of these facts, we study the time behavior of the NEP's first few moments and analyze its signatures when an external driving force $F$ is included. We finally show that the asymptotic form of the NEP's time derivative $\dotΦ[h]$ turns out to be valid for any substrate dimensionality $d$, thus providing a valuable tool for studies in $d>1$.

Recently, a variational approach has been introduced for the paradigmatic Kardar--Parisi--Zhang (KPZ) equation. Here we review that approach, together with the functional Taylor expansion that the KPZ nonequilibrium potential (NEP) admits. Such expansion becomes naturally truncated at third order, giving rise to a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation to be regarded as a gradient-flow counterpart to the KPZ equation. A dynamic renormalization group analysis at one-loop order of this new mesoscopic model yields the KPZ scaling relation alpha+z=2, as a consequence of the exact cancelation of the different contributions to vertex renormalization. This result is quite remarkable, considering the lower degree of symmetry of this equation, which is in particular not Galilean invariant. In addition, this scheme is exploited to inquire about the dynamical behavior of the KPZ equation through a path-integral approach. Each of these aspects offers novel points of view and sheds light on particular aspects of the dynamics of the KPZ equation.

In order to perform numerical simulations of the KPZ equation, in any dimensionality, a spatial discretization scheme must be prescribed. The known fact that the KPZ equation can be obtained as a result of a Hopf--Cole transformation applied to a diffusion equation (with \emph{multiplicative} noise) is shown here to strongly restrict the arbitrariness in the choice of spatial discretization schemes. On one hand, the discretization prescriptions for the Laplacian and the nonlinear (KPZ) term cannot be independently chosen. On the other hand, since the discretization is an operation performed on \emph{space} and the Hopf--Cole transformation is \emph{local} both in space and time, the former should be the same regardless of the field to which it is applied. It is shown that whereas some discretization schemes pass both consistency tests, known examples in the literature do not. The requirement of consistency for the discretization of Lyapunov functionals is argued to be a natural and safe starting point in choosing spatial discretization schemes. We also analyze the relation between real-space and pseudo-spectral discrete representations. In addition we discuss the relevance of the Galilean invariance violation in these consistent discretization schemes, and the alleged conflict of standard discretization with the fluctuation--dissipation theorem, peculiar of 1D.

The system is subjected to both temporal and spatiotemporal perturbations. Through the analysis of the system's time evolution and its time correlations, we have obtained numerical evidence for two stochastic resonance-like behaviors. Such behavior is seen when a generalized signal-to-noise ratio function are depicted as a function of the external noise intensity or as function of the system size. The underlying mechanism seems to be associated to a noise-induced chaos reduction. The possible relevance of those findings for an optimal climate prediction are discussed, using an analysis of the noise effects on the evolution of finite perturbations and errors.

An analytical soluble model based on a Continuous Time Random Walk (CTRW) scheme for the adsorption-desorption processes at interfaces, called bulk-mediated surface diffusion, is presented. The time evolution of the effective probability distribution width on the surface is calculated and analyzed within an anomalous diffusion framework. The asymptotic behavior for large times shows a sub-diffusive regime for the effective surface diffusion but, depending on the observed range of time, other regimes may be obtained. Montecarlo simulations show excellent agreement with analytical results. As an important byproduct of the indicated approach, we present the evaluation of the time for the first visit to the surface.

Transitions between the lattice states are induced by a combination of two processes: one periodic deterministic and the other stochastic. We study the dynamics of a system of particles moving in that medium, and characterize the problem from different points of view: mean first passage time (MFPT), probability of return to a given site ($P_{s_0}$), and the total length displacement or number of visited lattice sites ($Λ$). We observe a double {\it resonant activation}-like phenomenon when we plot the MFPT and $P_{s_0}$ as functions of the intensity of the transition rate stochastic component.

The voltage-sensitive channels are open or closed depending on the value taken by an external potential that has two contributions: a deterministic periodic and a stochastic one. Here we assume that the noise source is colored and non Gaussian, with a $q$-dependent probability distribution (where $q$ is a parameter indicating the departure from Gaussianity). We analyze the behavior of the oscillation amplitude as a function of both $q$ and the noise correlation time. The main result is that in addition to the resonant-like maximum as a function of the noise intensity, there is a new resonant maximum as a function of the parameter $q$.

Here we have assumed that the external potential has two contributions: a determinist periodic and a stochastic one. Our model shows a resonant-like maximum when we plot the amplitude of the oscillations in the absorption current vs. noise intensity. The model was solved both numerically and using an analytic approximation and was found to be in good accord with numerical simulations.
