We study the Josephson effect in planar $SF_1F_2S$ junctions that consist of conventional $s$-wave superconductors ($S$) connected by two metallic monodomain ferromagnets ($F_1$ and $F_2$) with arbitrary transparency of interfaces. We solve the scattering problem in the clean limit based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation for both spin-singlet and odd in frequency spin-triplet pairing correlations. We calculate numerically the Josephson current-phase relation $I(φ)$. While the first harmonic of $I(φ)$ is completely generated by spin-singlet and short-range spin-triplet superconducting correlations, for noncollinear magnetizations of ferromagnetic layers the second harmonic has an additional long-range spin-triplet component. Therefore, for strong ferromagnetic influence, the long-range spin-triplet contribution to the second harmonic dominates. We find an exception due to the geometric resonance for equal ferromagnetic layers when the first harmonic is strongly enhanced. Both first and second harmonic amplitudes oscillate with ferromagnetic layer thicknesses due to $0-π$ transitions. We study the influence of interface transparencies and find additional resonances for finite transparency of interface between ferromagnetic layers.

Magnetic flux dynamics in type-II superconductors is studied within the model of a viscous nonlinear diffusion of vortices for various sample geometries. We find that time dependence of magnetic moment relaxation after the field is switched off can be accurately approximated by $m(t)\propto 1-\sqrt{t/\tildeτ}$ in the narrow initial time interval and by $m(t)\propto (1+t/τ)^{-1}$ at later times before the flux creep sets in. The characteristic times $\tildeτ$ and $τ$ are proportional to the viscous drag coefficient $η$. Quantitative agreement with available experimental data is obtained for both conventional and high-temperature superconductors with $η$ exceeding by many orders of magnitude the Bardeen-Stephen coefficient for free vortices. Huge enhancement of the drag, as well as its exponential temperature dependence, indicates a strong influence of pinning centers on the flux diffusion. Notwithstanding complexity of the vortex motion in the presence of pinning and thermal agitation, we argue that the initial relaxation of magnetization can still be considered as a viscous flux flow with an effective drag coefficient.

We determine the electronic DOS in F layers and the Josephson current for arbitrary orientation of the magnetizations using the solutions of Eilenberger equations in the clean limit and for a moderate disorder in ferromagnets. We find that fully developed long-range proximity effect can occur in highly asymmetric ferromagnetic bilayer Josephson junctions with orthogonal magnetizations. The effect manifests itself as an enhancement in DOS, and as a dominant second harmonic in the Josephson current-phase relation. Distinctive variation of DOS in ferromagnets with the angle between magnetizations is experimentally observable by tunneling spectroscopy. This can provide an unambiguous signature of the long-range spin-triplet proximity effect.

Surprisingly, the long-range spin-triplet correlations give the dominant second harmonic in the Josephson current-phase relation of highly asymmetric SF1F2S junctions. The effect is robust against moderate disorder and variations in the layers thickness and exchange energy of ferromagnets.

Middle layers consist of two equal ferromagnets with antiparallel (AF) or parallel (F) magnetizations that are not collinear with magnetizations in the neighboring F' layers. We use fully self-consistent numerical solutions of the Eilenberger equations to calculate the superconducting pair amplitudes and the Josephson current for arbitrary thickness of ferromagnetic layers and the angle between in-plane magnetisations. For moderate disorder in ferromagnets the triplet proximity effect is practically the same for AF and F structures, like in the dirty limit. Triplet Josephson current is dominant for $d'\approx\hbar v_F/2h'$, where $d'$ is the F' layer thickness and $h'$ is the exchange energy. Our results are in a qualitative agreement with the recent experimental observations [T. S. Khaire, M. A. Khasawneh, W. P. Pratt, and N. O. Birge, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{104}, 137002 (2010)].

We study the Josephson effect and pairing correlations in SFFS junctions that consist of conventional superconductors (S) connected through two metallic monodomain ferromagnets (F) with transparent and spin inactive interfaces. We solve the Eilenberger equations for arbitrary relative orientation of magnetizations of the two F layers in the clean limit and for moderate disorder in ferromagnets. Spatial variation of pair amplitudes, singlet $f_s$, and odd in frequency triplet $f_{t0}$ and $f_{t1}$, with 0 and $\pm1$ spin projections, as well as the Josephson current-phase relations are calculated for different values of the ferromagnetic layers thickness and angle $α$ between in-plane magnetizations. In contrast to the dirty limit case, we find that for $0<α<π$ both spin singlet and triplet pair amplitudes in F layers power-law decay in the same oscillatory manner with distance from the FS interfaces. This decay gets faster as the impurity-scattering rate in ferromagnets is increased. The computed triplet amplitude $f_{t1}$ has opposite signs in the two magnet regions, penetrates into the superconductors and monotonically decays over the same distance, which is the superconducting coherence length, as the singlet amplitude $f_s$ saturates to the bulk value. We point out that influence of misorientation of magnetizations on the Josephson current can not be attributed directly to the appearance of odd triplet correlations.

We argue that topological meron excitations, which are in a strong coupling phase (bound in pairs) in infinite quantum Hall ferromagnets, become deconfined in finite size quantum Hall systems. Although effectively for larger systems meron energy grows with the size of the system, when gyromagnetic ratio is small meron becomes the lowest lying state of a quantum Hall droplet. This comes as a consequence of the many-body correlations built in the meron construction that minimize the interaction energy. We demonstrate this by using mean field ansatzes for meron wave function. The ansatzes will enable us to consider much larger system sizes than in the previous work [A. Petkovic and M.V. Milovanovic, PRL 98, 066808 (2007)], where fractionalization into merons was introduced.

A doubling of the switching frequency is observed within certain intervals of the external magnetic field. Assuming sinusoidal current-phase relations of both junctions our model of a dc-SQUID embedded within a superconducting ring explains this feature by a sequence of current reversals in the ferromagnetic section of the junction in these field intervals. The switching anomalies are induced by the coupling between the magnetic fluxes in the two superconducting loops.

We study the Josephson effect in clean heterojunctions that consist of superconductors connected through two metallic ferromagnets with insulating interfaces. We solve the scattering problem based on the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equation for any relative orientation of in-plane magnetizations, arbitrary transparency of interfaces, and mismatch of Fermi wave vectors. Both spin singlet and triplet superconducting correlations are taken into account, and the Josephson current is calculated as a function of the ferromagnetic layers thicknesses and of the angle $α$ between their magnetizations. We find that the critical Josephson current $I_c$ is a monotonic function of $α$ when the junction is far enough from $0-π$ transitions. This holds when ferromagnets are relatively weak. For stronger ferromagnets, variation of $α$ induces switching between 0 and $π$ states and $I_c(α)$ is non-monotonic function, displaying characteristic dips at the transitions. However, the non-monotonicity is the effect of a weaker influence of the exchange potential in the case of non-parallel magnetizations. No substantial impact of spin-triplet superconducting correlations on the Josephson current has been found in the clean limit. Experimental control of the critical current and $0-π$ transitions by varying the angle between magnetizations is suggested.

Transport phenomena in clean ferromagnet-superconductor-ferromagnet (FSF) trilayers are studied theoretically for a general case of arbitrary orientation of in-plane magnetizations and interface transparencies. Generalized expressions for scattering probabilities are derived and the differential conductance is computed using solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. We focus on size and coherence effects that characterize ballistic transport, in particular on the subgap transmission and geometrical oscillations of the conductance. We find a monotonic dependence of conductance spectra and magnetoresistance on the angle of misorientation of magnetizations as their alignment is changed from parallel to antiparallel. Spin-triplet pair correlations in FSF heterostructures induced by non-collinearity of magnetizations are investigated by solving the Gor'kov equations in the clean limit. Unlike diffusive FSF junctions, where the triplet correlations have a long-range monotonic decay, we show that in clean ferromagnet-superconductor hybrids both singlet and triplet pair correlations induced in the F layers are oscillating and power-law decaying with the distance from the S-F interfaces.

Analytic expressions for charge and spin conductance spectra are derived for the general case of insulating interfaces (from metallic to tunnel limit), the Fermi velocity mismatch, and for parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) alignment of the electrode magnetizations. We focus on two characteristic features of finite size and coherency: subgap electronic transport, and oscillations of the differential conductance. Periodic vanishing of the Andreev reflection at the energies of geometrical resonances above the superconducting gap is a striking consequence of the quasiparticle interference. In contrast with the case of incoherent transport, a non-trivial spin-polarization without the excess spin accumulation is found for the AP alignment.

The energy bands and the global density of states are computed for superconductor / normal-metal superlattices in the clean limit. Dispersion relations are derived for the general case of insulating interfaces, including the mismatch of Fermi velocities and effective band masses. We focus on the influence of finite interface transparency and compare our results with those for transparent superlattices and trilayers. Analogously to the rapid variation on the atomic scale of the energy dispersion with layer thicknesses in transparent superlattices, we find strong oscillations of the almost flat energy bands (transmission resonances) in the case of finite transparency. In small-period transparent superlattices the BCS coherence peak disappears and a similar subgap peak is formed due to the Andreev process. With decreasing interface transparency the characteristic double peak structure in the global density of states develops towards a gapless BCS-like result in the tunnel limit. This effect can be used as a reliable STM probe for interface transparency.

Josephson effect in short ballistic SINIS and SIFIS double-tunnel junctions, consisting of clean superconductors (S), a normal metal (N) or metallic ferromagnet (F), and insulating interfaces (I) is studied. For SINIS double-tunnel junctions, sharp peaks in the critical Josephson current as a function of the junction width result from the resonant amplification of the Andreev process when the quasi-bound states enter the superconducting gap. For SIFIS double-tunnel junctions spin split quasi-bound states partially amplify the supercurrent and trigger the transitions between 0 and $π$ states of the junction. Instead of the critical current reaching a peak value (which happens when the Andreev states cross the Fermi surface in SINIS junctions), a narrow dip opens up exactly at the peak due to the compensation of partial currents flowing in opposite directions. This is related to the spin polarization of Andreev states and explains the coexistence of stable and metastable 0 and $π$ states in the vicinity of the transition. With increased barrier transparency, the described mechanism of $0-π$ transitions is modified by the broadening and overlapping of quasi-bound states (transmission resonances). Temperature-induced transitions both from 0 to $π$ and from $π$ to 0 states are studied by computing the phase diagram (temperature vs. junction width) for different interfacial transparencies varying from metallic (transparent) to the tunnel limit.

We consider the coherent regime in which quasiparticle transmission resonances contribute significantly to the Andreev process. The Josephson current is calculated for various parameters of the junction, and the influence of both interfacial transparency and FWVM is analyzed. For thin layers of strong ferromagnet and finite interfacial transparency, we find that coherent (geometrical) oscillations of the maximum Josephson current are superimposed on the oscillations related to the crossover between 0 and $π$ states. For the same case we find that the temperature-induced $0-π$ transition occurs if the junction is very close to the crossovers at zero temperature.

The scattering problem is solved for the general case of ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (FSF) double-barrier junction, including the interface transparency from metallic to tunnel limit, and the Fermi velocity mismatch. Charge and spin conductance spectra of FSF junctions are calculated for parallel (P) and antiparallel (AP) alignment of the electrode magnetization. Limiting cases of nonmagnetic normal-metal electrodes (NSN) and of incoherent transport are also presented. We focus on two characteristic features of finite size and coherency: subgap tunneling of electrons, and oscillations of the differential conductance. Periodic vanishing of the Andreev reflection at the energies of geometrical resonances above the superconducting gap is a striking consequence of the quasiparticle interference. Also, the non-trivial spin-polarization of the current is found for FSF junctions in AP alignment. This is in contrast with the incoherent transport, where the unpolarized current is accompanied by excess spin accumulation and destruction of superconductivity. Application to spectroscopic measurements of the superconducting gap and the Fermi velocity is also discussed.

Large peaks in DOS, due to a special case of Andreev reflection at the ferromagnetic barrier, correspond to spin-splitt bound states. Their energies are obtained as a function of the barrier thickness, exchange field strength, and of the macroscopic phase difference $φ$ at the link, related to the Josephson current. In the ground state, $φ$ can be 0 or $π$, depending on the ferromagnetic barrier influence. Conditions for the appearence of the zero-energy bound states (ZES) and for the spin polarized ground state (SPGS) are obtained analytically. The unconventional Josephson coupling in a ferromagnetic weak link between d-wave superconductors is studied theoretically.
For strong ferromagnetic barrier influence, the unconventional coupling, with ground state phase difference across the link $0<φ_{\rm gs}\leq π$, is obtained at small crystal misorientation of the superconducting electrodes, in contrast to the case of normal metal barrier, where it appears at large misorientations. In both cases, with decreasing temperature there is an increasing range of misorientations, where $φ_{\rm gs}$ varies continuously between 0 and $π$.
When the weak link is a part of a superconducting ring, this is accompanied by the flow of spontaneous supercurrent, of intensity which depends (for a given misorientation) on the reduced inductance $l=2πLI_c(T)/Φ_0$, and is non-zero only for $l$ greater than a critical value. For $l\gg 1$, another consequence of the unconventional coupling is the anomalous quantization of the magnetic flux.

The Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations are solved perturbatively, within the model of step-variation of the gap function, adjusting the Caroli, de Gennes and Matricon approach for low-lying excitations in cuprates. A large peak in the density of states in a "pancake" vortex is found, as a consequence of two-dimensionality and strong coupling.

Abstract:
The quasiparticle excitation spectrum of isolated vortices in clean layered d-wave superconductors is calculated. A large peak in the density of states in the "pancake" vortex core is found, in an agreement with the recent experimental data for high-temperature superconductors.

Analytical solutions are obtained within the model of step-variation of the gap function, adjusting the Caroli, de Gennes and Matricon approach for low-lying excitations in cuprates. A large peak in the density of states in the "pancake" vortex core is found, caused by the two-dimensional and strong coupling nature of high-temperature superconductivity.
