In this work, we investigate the application of the plasma shutters for heavy ion acceleration driven by a high-intensity laser pulse. We use particle-in-cell (PIC) and hydrodynamic simulations. The laser pulse, transmitted through the opaque shutter, gains a steep-rising front and its peak intensity is locally increased at the cost of losing part of its energy. These effects have a direct influence on subsequent ion acceleration from the ultrathin target behind the shutter. In our 3D simulations of silicon nitride plasma shutter and a silver target, the maximal energy of high-Z ions increases significantly when the shutter is included for both linearly and circularly polarized laser pulses. Moreover, application of the plasma shutter for linearly polarized pulse results in focusing of ions towards the laser axis in the plane perpendicular to the laser polarization. The generated high energy ion beam has significantly lower divergence compared to the broad ion cloud, generated without the shutter. The effects of prepulses are also investigated assuming a double plasma shutter. The first shutter can withstand the assumed sub-ns prepulse (treatment of ns and ps prepulses by other techniques is assumed) and the pulse shaping occursvia interaction with the second shutter. On the basis of our theoretical findings, we formulated an approach towards designing a double plasma shutter for high-intensity and high-power laser pulses and built a prototype.

We demonstrate the differences in hot electron absorption mechanisms dominant in the interaction of femtosecond laser pulse with intensities 1e18 W/cm2 and 1e21 W/cm2 on fully ionized target with steep density profile and preplasma with moderate scale length (3 microns). We show that acceleration of each electron starts at the moment when magnetic component of standing electromagnetic wave changes its polarity in regime without preplasma. In the presence of preplasma the stochastic heating is the dominant absorption mechanism along with the longitudinal electric field. It is observed, that wave's energy is absorbed only if standing wave is already created at the position of electron during the interaction with the pulse with intensity 1e18 W/cm2. In the case with intensity 1e21 W/cm2, part of electrons is pre-accelerated in front of the target before the reflection and following stochastic heating. The presence of preplasma results in electron temperatures close to or even exceeding ponderomotive scaling. At higher intensity, the re-injection of electrons previously repelled by incident wave's ponderomotive force into high-field regions is allowed if standing wave is created.

Usage of double-layer targets consisting of heavy and light material with modulated interface between them provides a way for laser-driven generation of collimated ion beams. With extensive 2D3V PIC simulations we show that this configuration may result in a development of a relativistic instability with Rayleigh-Taylor and Richtmyer-Meshkov like features. Initially small perturbations are amplified during the laser-target interaction leading to the formation of low-density plasma regions and high-density bunches between them, which are accelerated by the laser radiation pressure as whole compact structures. That results in collimated quasi-monoenergetic proton beam with high average energy. The properties of this proton beam such as its low emittance (one order of magnitude lower compared to that of conventional accelerators) and divergence are discussed. Results are compared with similar acceleration schemes such as double-layer target without corrugation and single-layer target.

Laser-driven proton acceleration from novel cryogenic hydrogen target of the thickness of tens of microns irradiated by multiPW laser pulse is investigated here for relevant laser parameters accessible in near future. It is demonstrated that the efficiency of proton acceleration from relatively thick hydrogen solid ribbon largely exceeds the acceleration efficiency for a thinner ionized plastic foil, which can be explained by enhanced hole boring driven by laser ponderomotive force in the case of light ions and lower target density. Three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations of laser pulse interaction with relatively thick hydrogen target show larger energies of protons accelerated in the target interior during the hole boring phase and reduced energies of protons accelerated from the rear side of the target by quasistatic electric field compared with the results obtained from two-dimensional (2D) PIC calculations. Linearly and circularly polarized multiPW laser pulses of duration exceeding 100 fs show similar performance in terms of proton acceleration from both the target interior as well as from the rear side of the target. When ultrashort pulse ($\sim$ 30 fs) is assumed, the number of accelerated protons from the target interior is substantially reduced.

The influence of laser frequency on laser-driven ion acceleration is investigated by means of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. When ultrashort intense laser pulse at higher harmonic frequency irradiates a thin solid foil, the target may become relativistically transparent for significantly lower laser pulse intensity compared to irradiation at fundamental laser frequency. The relativistically induced transparency results in an enhanced heating of hot electrons as well as increased maximum energies of accelerated ions and their numbers. Our simulation results have shown the increase of maximum proton energy and of the number of high-energy protons by a factor of 2 after the interaction of an ultrashort laser pulse of maximum intensity $7 \times 10^{21}~\rm{W/cm^2}$ with a fully ionized plastic foil of realistic density and of optimal thickness between $100~\rm{nm}$ and $200~\rm{nm}$ when switching from the fundamental frequency to the third harmonics.

The interaction of laser pulses with thin grating targets, having a periodic groove at the irradiated surface, has been experimentally investigated. Ultrahigh contrast ($\sim 10^{12}$) pulses allowed to demonstrate an enhanced laser-target coupling for the first time in the relativistic regime of ultra-high intensity $>10^{19} \mbox{W/cm}^{2}$. A maximum increase by a factor of 2.5 of the cut-off energy of protons produced by Target Normal Sheath Acceleration has been observed with respect to plane targets, around the incidence angle expected for resonant excitation of surface waves. A significant enhancement is also observed for small angles of incidence, out of resonance.
