Battery energy storage systems (BESS) play an increasingly vital role in integrating renewable generation into power grids due to their ability to dynamically balance supply. Grid-tied batteries typically employ power converters, where part-load efficiencies vary non-linearly. While this non-linearity can be modeled with high accuracy, it poses challenges for optimization, particularly in ensuring computational tractability. In this paper, we consider a non-linear BESS formulation based on the Energy Reservoir Model (ERM). A data-driven approach is introduced with the input-convex neural network (ICNN) to approximate the nonlinear efficiency with a convex function. The epigraph of the convex function is used to engender a convex program for battery ERM optimization. This relaxed ICNN method is applied to two battery optimization use-cases: PV smoothing and revenue maximization, and it is compared with three other ERM formulations (nonlinear, linear, and mixed-integer). Specifically, ICNN-based methods appear to be promising for future battery optimization with desirable feasibility and optimality outcomes across both use-cases.

We examine pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) for intensity modulation and direct detection systems. Using a straight-forward, mixed noise model, we optimize the constellations with an autoencoder-based neural network (NN), an improve required signal-to-noise ratio of 4 dB for amplified spontaneous emission (ASE)-limited PAM4 and PAM8, without increasing system complexity. Performance can also be improved in O-band wavelength division multiplexing system with semiconductor optical amplifier amplification and chromatic dispersion. We show via simulation that for such a system operating at 53 Gbaud, we can extend the reach of PAM4 by 10-25 km with an optimized constellation and a NN decoder. We present an experimental validation of 4 dB improvement of an ASE-limited PAM4 at 60 Gbaud using an optimized constellation and a NN decoder.

A significant portion of driving hazards is caused by human error and disregard for local driving regulations; Consequently, an intelligent assistance system can be beneficial. This paper proposes a novel vision-based modular package to ensure drivers' safety by perceiving the environment. Each module is designed based on accuracy and inference time to deliver real-time performance. As a result, the proposed system can be implemented on a wide range of vehicles with minimum hardware requirements. Our modular package comprises four main sections: lane detection, object detection, segmentation, and monocular depth estimation. Each section is accompanied by novel techniques to improve the accuracy of others along with the entire system. Furthermore, a GUI is developed to display perceived information to the driver. In addition to using public datasets, like BDD100K, we have also collected and annotated a local dataset that we utilize to fine-tune and evaluate our system. We show that the accuracy of our system is above 80% in all the sections. Our code and data are available at https://github.com/Pandas-Team/Autonomous-Vehicle-Environment-Perception
