Centrosymmetric compounds which host three-dimensional topological spin structures comprise a distinct subclass of materials in which multiple-$\mathbf{q}$ magnetic order is stabilized by anisotropy and bond frustration in contrast to the more common path of antisymmetric exchange interactions. Here we investigate static and dynamic magnetic properties of the cubic perovskite SrFeO$_3$ $\unicode{x2013}$ a rare example of a centrosymmetric material hosting two types of topological spin textures: skyrmion- and hedgehog-lattice phases. Our detailed magnetization and dilatometry measurements describe the domain selection processes and phase transitions in SrFeO$_3$. Spin excitations are investigated using inelastic neutron scattering for all three zero-field phases. In the higher-temperature ordered phases, high-energy magnons increasingly lose coherence, so that spin fluctuations are dominated by a distinct quasielastic component at low energies. We anticipate that this could be generic to symmetric helimagnets in which the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken by the magnetic order.

The magnetic insulator Nd$_3$BWO$_9$ has been proposed as a proximate spin-liquid candidate, realizing the highly frustrated breathing kagome lattice. We report a combination of single-crystal neutron scattering studies and numerical simulations, showing that it is the inter-plane couplings that determine the physics. To explain the exotic magnetism, we derive a simple one-dimensional Ising model composed of twisted triangular spin-tubes, i.e., triple braids of Ising spin chains with almost-orthogonal anisotropy frames and competing ferro-antiferromagnetic interactions. This model can account for the ground state, excitations, the numerous field-induced fractional magnetization plateau phases and incommensurate magnetic correlations at elevated temperatures.

ZrW$_{2}$O$_{8}$ is the prototypical example of a material exhibiting negative thermal expansion (NTE). As well as being among the first NTE materials to be studied in detail, it has served as a test bed for ideas for the physical mechanisms that lead to this unusual behavior. It is now widely accepted that here, and in many other framework materials exhibiting NTE, a collection of low energy phonon modes, as opposed to just one or two, are responsible for the anomalous thermal properties. However, quantitative verification and analysis of the density functional theory (DFT) calculations which underpin this proposal are still lacking. In particular, probing the low energy phonons directly throughout reciprocal space using inelastic neutron scattering, as opposed to other techniques which only probe the Brillouin zone center, is technically challenging and hence rarely done. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering measurements in a large number of Brillouin zones, achieved via the time of flight technique, over a 400 K temperature range. We find excellent agreement between DFT calculations and experimental data at low temperature, albeit with a rescaling of the calculated phonon energies, and of the lattice parameter used in the calculations compared to the measured value. However, the shifts in phonon modes due to the reduction in lattice parameter on warming, that can be predicted using DFT, are not observed. This is most likely due to counteractive anharmonic effects arising from the increased amplitude of lattice vibrations at elevated temperatures. Notwithstanding, the good agreement between experiment and DFT gives high confidence that the theory's predictions of atomic motions for different modes is correct, and hence can be used as a reliable basis for quantitative analysis of NTE effects.

Hydrogen hydrates present a rich phase diagram influenced by both pressure and temperature, with the so-called C$_2$ phase emerging prominently above 2.5 GPa. In this phase, hydrogen molecules are densely packed within a cubic ice-like lattice and the interaction with the surrounding water molecules profoundly affects their quantum rotational dynamics. Herein, we delve into this intricate interplay by directly solving the Schrödinger's equation for a quantum H$_2$ rotor in the C$_2$ crystal field at finite temperature, generated through Density Functional Theory. Our calculations reveal a giant energy splitting relative to the magnetic quantum number of $\pm$3.2 meV for $l=1$. Employing inelastic neutron scattering, we experimentally measure the energy levels of H$_2$ within the C$_2$ phase at 6.0 and 3.4 GPa and low temperatures, finding remarkable agreement with our theoretical predictions. These findings underscore the pivotal role of hydrogen--water interactions in dictating the rotational behavior of the hydrogen molecules within the C$_2$ phase and indicate heightened induced-dipole interactions compared to other hydrogen hydrates.

Spin-nematic and spin-smectic phases have been reported in magnetic materials, which break rotational symmetry while preserving translational symmetry along certain directions. However, until now the analogy to liquid crystals remained incomplete because no magnetic analog of cholesteric order was known. Here we show that the bilayer perovskite Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$, previously believed to adopt a simple single-$\mathbf{q}$ spin-helical order, hosts two distinct types of multi-$\mathbf{q}$ spin textures and the first "spin-cholesteric". Its ground state represents a novel multi-$\mathbf{q}$ spin texture with unequally intense spin modulations at the two ordering vectors. This is followed in temperature by the new "spin-cholesteric" phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, in which the translational symmetry is broken only along one of the crystal directions while the weaker orthogonal modulation melts, giving rise to intense short-range dynamical fluctuations. Shortly before the transition to the paramagnetic state, vortex-crystal order spanned by two equivalent $\mathbf{q}$ vectors emerges. The "spin-cholesteric" phase completes the spin analogy with liquid crystals and renders Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$ a touchstone for studying transitions among multiple-$\mathbf{q}$ spin textures in a centrosymmetric host.

Low-dimensional quantum magnets are a versatile materials platform for studying the emergent many-body physics and collective excitations that can arise even in systems with only short-range interactions. Understanding their low-temperature structure and spin Hamiltonian is key to explaining their magnetic properties, including unconventional quantum phases, phase transitions, and excited states. We study the metal-organic coordination compound (C$_5$H$_9$NH$_3$)$_2$CuBr$_4$ and its deuterated counterpart, which upon its discovery was identified as a candidate two-leg quantum ($S = 1/2$) spin ladder in the strong-leg coupling regime. By growing large single crystals and probing them with both bulk and microscopic techniques, we deduce that two previously unknown structural phase transitions take place between 136 K and 113 K. The low-temperature structure has a monoclinic unit cell giving rise to two inequivalent spin ladders. We further confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 30 mK and discuss the implications of this two-ladder structure for the magnetic properties of (C$_5$H$_9$NH$_3$)$_2$CuBr$_4$.

We investigate the magnetic properties of the monoclinic D-type $\rm{Er_2Si_2O_7}$ with a distorted honeycomb lattice using powder and single crystal neutron scattering techniques, as well as single crystal magnetisation measurements. The powder neutron diffraction shows that below the ordering temperature, $T_{\rm N}=1.85$ K, the compound forms a ${\bf q}=0$ antiferromagnetic structure with four sublattices. For $H \! \parallel \! a$, magnetisation measurements reveal a narrow, but clearly visible plateau at one third of the magnetisation saturation value. The plateau's stabilisation is accompanied by a significant increase of the magnetic unit cell, as the magnetic peaks with fractional indices are observed in single crystal neutron diffraction experiments. At low-temperatures, the inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal the presence of low-energy dispersionless excitations. Their spectrum is sensitive to the applied field, it significantly softens on the magnetisation plateau, and demonstrates the behaviour expected for a non-collinear Ising antiferromagnet away from the plateau.

The cubic perovskite SrFeO$_3$ was recently reported to host hedgehog- and skyrmion-lattice phases in a highly symmetric crystal structure which does not support the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions commonly invoked to explain such magnetic order. Hints of a complex magnetic phase diagram have also recently been found in powder samples of the single-layer Ruddlesden-Popper analog Sr$_2$FeO$_4$, so a reinvestigation of the bilayer material Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$, believed to be a simple helimagnet, is called for. Our magnetization and dilatometry studies reveal a rich magnetic phase diagram with at least 6 distinct magnetically ordered phases and strong similarities to that of SrFeO$_3$. In particular, at least one phase is apparently multiple-$\mathbf{q}$, and the $\mathbf{q}$s are not observed to vary among the phases. Since Sr$_3$Fe$_2$O$_7$ has only two possible orientations for its propagation vector, some of the phases are likely exotic multiple-$\mathbf{q}$ order, and it is possible to fully detwin all phases and more readily access their exotic physics.

Inelastic neutron scattering experiments combining time-of-flight and polarized techniques yield a comprehensive picture of the magnon dispersion in multiferroic TbMnO3 including the dynamic chirality. Taking into account only Mn3+ moments, spin-wave calculations including nearest-neighbor interactions, frustrating next-nearest neighbor exchange as well as single-ion anisotropy and antisymmetric terms describe the energy dispersion and the distribution of neutron scattering intensity in the multiferroic state very well. Polarized neutron scattering reveals strong dynamic chirality of both signs that may be controlled by external electric fields in the multiferroic phase. Also above the onset of long-range multiferroic order in zero electric field, a small inelastic chiral component can be inverted by an electric field. The microscopic spin-wave calculations fully explain also the dynamic chirality of magnetic excitations, which is imprinted by the static chirality of the multiferroic phase. The ordering of Tb3+ moments at lower temperature reduces the broadening of magnons but also renders the magnon dispersion more complex.

Using magnetometry, synchrotron diffraction and neutron scattering we demonstrate an evolution of ground states with $x$ in Zn$\mathbf {_x}$; from long-range magnetic order in averievite ($x=0$), via a spin-glass-like ground state in Zn$\mathbf {_1}$, to a quantum spin liquid (QSL) in Zn$\mathbf {_2}$ for which inelastic neutron scattering reveals a gapless continuum of excitations. Similar to archetypal $S = 1/2$ KAFMs herbertsmithite and SrCr$_{8.19}$Ga$_{3.81}$O$_{19}$ (SCGO), the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of Zn$\mathbf {_2}$ shows scaling behavior consistent with proximity to a quantum critical point. The results demonstrate that the new Zn$\mathbf {_2}$ material is an excellent test bed for achieving the elusive goal of charge carrier doping in QSL states of $S = 1/2$ KAFMs, in-line with previous theoretical studies.

A dipolar inelastic signal is also observed, as expected for spinons in a quantum spin ice (QSI). Fits of thermodynamic data using exact diagonalization methods indicate that the largest interaction is an octupolar exchange, with a strength roughly twice as large as other terms. A hierarchy of exchange interactions with dominant octupolar and significant dipolar exchange, still in the octupolar QSI phase, rationalises neutron scattering observations. Our results reveal a `quantum multipolar liquid' where correlations involve multiple terms in moment series expansion, opening questions about their intertwining and possible hierarchy.

Electronic spins can form long-range entangled phases of condensed matter named quantum spin liquids. Their existence is conceptualized in models of two- or three-dimensional frustrated magnets that evade symmetry-breaking order down to zero temperature. Quantum spin ice (QSI) is a theoretically well-established example described by an emergent quantum electrodynamics, with excitations behaving like photon and matter quasiparticles. The latter are fractionally charged and equivalent to the `spinons' emerging from coherent phases of singlets in one dimension, where clear experimental proofs of fractionalization exist. However, in frustrated magnets it remains difficult to establish consensual evidence for quantum spin liquid ground states and their fractional excitations. Here, we use backscattering neutron spectroscopy to achieve extremely high resolution of the time-dependent magnetic response of the candidate QSI material Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$. We find a gapped spectrum featuring a threshold and peaks that match theories for pair production and propagation of fractional matter excitations (spinons) strongly coupled to a background gauge field. The multiple peaks are a specific signature of the $π$-flux phase of QSI, providing spectroscopic evidence for fractionalization in a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid.

By combining inelastic neutron scattering and numerical simulations, we study the quasi-one dimensional Ising-like quantum antiferromagnet BaCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ in a longitudinal magnetic field applied along the magnetic anisotropy axis, which is also the chain direction. The external field closes the excitation gap due to the magnetic anisotropy, inducing a transition from the Néel ordered state to an incommensurate longitudinal spin density wave phase. If the field is increased further, another transition into a transverse antiferromagnetic phase takes place at 9 T due to the competition between longitudinal and transverse correlations. We numerically and experimentally show that the model of XXZ chains connected by a weak interchain interaction well reproduces this transition. We also calculate the dynamical susceptibility and demonstrate that it agrees quantitatively with inelastic neutron scattering measurements. In contrast to the abrupt change of magnetic ordering, the spectra do not change much at the transition at 9 T, and the spin dynamics can be described as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. We also refine the modeling of BaCo$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ by including a four-site periodic term arising from the crystal structure which enables to account for an anomaly of the magnetic susceptibility appearing at 19 T as well as for the anticrossing observed in the inelastic neutron scattering spectra.

Y3Cu9(OH)19Cl8 realizes an original anisotropic kagome model hosting a rich magnetic phase diagram [M. Hering et al, npj Computational Materials 8, 1 (2022)]. We present an improved synthesis of large phase-pure single crystals via an external gradient method. These crystals were investigated in details by susceptibility, specific heat, thermal expansion, neutron scattering and local muSR and NMR techniques. At variance with polycristalline samples, the study of single crystals gives evidence for subtle structural instabilities at 33K and 13K which preserve the global symmetry of the system and thus the magnetic model. At 2.1K the compound shows a magnetic transition to a coplanar (1/3,1/3) long range order as predicted theoretically. However our analysis of the spin wave excitations yields magnetic interactions which locate the compound closer to the phase boundary to a classical jammed spin liquid phase. Enhanced quantum fluctuations at this boundary may be responsible for the strongly reduced ordered moment of the Cu2+, estimated to be 0.075muB from muSR.

Here we investigate the spin-wave spectrum of this ordered phase with powder inelastic neutron scattering and describe it using a model Hamiltonian obtained from first-principles calculations based on the complete $|J,m_J\rangle$ multiplet description of the Ce sites with an anisotropic nearest-neighbor exchange interaction. Combing the current understanding of the exchange interaction in the systems with the effects of texturing in the powder, we have been able to model the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum with high fidelity.

Here we show that the moment in ${\rm Nd_2Hf_2O_7}$ forms a static long-range ordered ground state, a flat, gapped pinch point excitation and dispersive excitations. These results confirm recent theories which predict that the dispersive modes, which arise from the divergence-full moment, host a pinch point pattern of their own, observed experimentally as `half-moons'.

We present a comprehensive experimental and ab-initio study of the $S=1/2$ Mo$^{5+}$ system, KMoOP$_2$O$_7$, and show that it realizes the $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg chain antiferromagnet model. Powder neutron diffraction reveals that KMoOP$_2$O$_7$ forms a magnetic network comprised of pairs of Mo$^{5+}$ chains within its monoclinic $P2_1/n$ structure. Antiferromagnetic interactions within the Mo$^{5+}$ chains are identified through magnetometry measurements and confirmed by analysis of the magnetic specific heat. The latter reveals a broad feature centred on $T_\textrm{N} = 0.54$ K, which we ascribe to the onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order. No magnetic Bragg scattering is observed in powder neutron diffraction data collected at 0.05 K, however, which is consistent with a strongly suppressed ordered moment with an upper limit $μ_\textrm{ord} < 0.15 μ_\textrm{B}$. The one-dimensional character of the magnetic correlations in KMoOP$_2$O$_7$ is verified through analysis of inelastic neutron scattering data, resulting in a model with $J_\textrm{1} \approx 34$ K and $J_\textrm{2} \approx -2$ K for the intrachain and interchain exchange interactions, respectively. The origin of these experimental findings are addressed through density-functional theory calculations.

We report high-resolution single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. This material is formed from layers of four-site \cupola" structures, oriented alternately upwards and downwards, which constitute a rather special realization of two-dimensional (2D) square-lattice magnetism. The strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction within each cupola, or plaquette, unit has a geometry largely unexplored among the numerous studies of magnetic properties in 2D Heisenberg models with spin and spatial anisotropies. We have measured the magnetic excitations at zero field and in fields up to 5 T, finding a complex mode structure with multiple characteristic features that allow us to extract all the relevant magnetic interactions by modelling within the linear spin-wave approximation. We demonstrate that Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ is a checkerboard system with almost equal intra- and inter-plaquette couplings, in which the intra-plaquette DM interaction is instrumental both in enforcing robust magnetic order and in opening a large gap at the Brillouin-zone center. We place our observations in the perspective of generalized phase diagrams for spin-1/2 square-lattice models and materials, where exploring anisotropies and frustration as routes to quantum disorder remains a frontier research problem.

Using a combination of neutron scattering, calorimetry, Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations and analytic results we uncover confinement effects in depleted, partially magnetized quantum spin ladders. We show that introducing non-magnetic impurities into magnetized spin ladders leads to the emergence of a new characteristic length L in the otherwise scale-free Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (serving as the effective low-energy model). This results in universal LT scaling of staggered susceptibilities. Comparison of simulation results with experimental phase diagrams of prototypical spin ladder compounds DIMPY and BPCB yields excellent agreement.

We have investigated the origin of the magnetic dipole correlations $\langle σ_{\boldsymbol{Q}}^z σ_{\boldsymbol{-Q}}^z \rangle$ characterized by the modulation wave vector $\boldsymbol{k} \sim (\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2})$ observed in the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$. This magnetic short-range order cannot be accounted for by adding further-neighbor exchange interactions to the nearest-neighbor pseudospin-$\tfrac{1}{2}$ Hamiltonian for quantum pyrochlore magnets. Using classical Monte Carlo simulation and quantum simulation based on thermally pure quantum (TPQ) states we have shown that the spin correlations with $\boldsymbol{k} \sim (\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2})$ are induced at low temperatures by a three-spin interaction of a form $σ_{\boldsymbol{r}}^{\pm} σ_{\boldsymbol{r}^{\prime}}^z σ_{\boldsymbol{r}^{\prime \prime}}^z $, which is a correction to the Hamiltonian due to the low crystal-field excitation. Simulations using TPQ states have shown that the spin correlations coexist with electric quadrupole correlations $\langle σ_{\boldsymbol{Q}}^α σ_{\boldsymbol{-Q}}^β \rangle$ ($α, β= x, y$) with $\boldsymbol{k} \sim \boldsymbol{0}$. These results suggest that the putative quantum spin liquid state of Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+y}$ is located close to phase boundaries of the spin-ice, quadrupole-ordered, and magnetic-ordered states in the classical approximation, and that the three-spin interaction brings about a quantum disordered ground state with both spin and quadrupole correlations.

We investigate the temperature dependence of the spin dynamics in the pyrochlore magnet Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ by neutron scattering experiments. At low temperature, this material undergoes a transition towards an "all in - all out" antiferromagnetic phase and the spin dynamics encompass a dispersion-less mode, characterized by a dynamical spin ice structure factor. Unexpectedly, this mode is found to survive above $T_{\rm N} \approx 300$ mK. Concomitantly, elastic correlations of the spin ice type develop. These are the signatures of a peculiar correlated paramagnetic phase which can be considered as a new example of Coulomb phase. Our observations near $T_{\rm N}$ do not reproduce the signatures expected for a Higgs transition, but show reminiscent features of the "all in - all out" order superimposed on a Coulomb phase.

The physical characterisation and understanding of molecular magnetic materials is one of the most important steps towards the integration of such systems in hybrid spintronic devices. Amongst the many characterisation techniques employed in such a task, Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) stands as one of the most powerful and sensitive tools to investigate their spin dynamics. Herein, the magnetic properties and spin dynamics of two dinuclear complexes, namely [(M(hfacac)$_2$)$_2$(bpym)] (where M = Ni$^{2+}$, Co$^{2+}$, abbreviated in the following as Ni$_2$, Co$_2$) are reported. These are model systems that could constitute fundamental units of future spintronic devices. By exploiting the highly sensitive IN5 Cold INS spectrometer, we are able to gain a deep insight into the spin dynamics of Ni$_2$ and to fully obtain the microscopic spin Hamiltonian parameters; while for Co$_2$, a multitude of INS transitions are observed demonstrating the complexity of the magnetic properties of octahedral cobalt-based systems.

We have investigated the dynamics of liquid water confined in mesostructured porous silica (MCM-41) and periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) by incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering experiments. The effect of tuning the water/surface interaction from hydrophilic to more hydrophobic on the water mobility, while keeping the pore size in the range 3.5-4.1 nm, was assessed from the comparative study of three PMOs comprising different organic bridging units and the purely siliceous MCM-41 case. An extended dynamical range was achieved by combining time-of-flight (IN5B) and backscattering (IN16B) quasielastic neutron spectrometers providing complementary energy resolutions. Liquid water was studied at regularly spaced temperatures ranging from 300 K to 243 K. In all systems, the molecular dynamics could be described consistently by the combination of two independent motions resulting from fast local motion around the average molecule position and the confined translational jump diffusion of its center of mass. All the molecules performed local relaxations, whereas the translational motion of a fraction of molecules was frozen on the experimental timescale. This study provides a comprehensive microscopic view on the dynamics of liquid water confined in mesopores, with distinct surface chemistries, in terms of non-mobile/mobile fraction, self-diffusion coefficient, residence time, confining radius, local relaxation time, and their temperature dependence. Importantly, it demonstrates that the strength of the water/surface interaction determines the long-time tail of the dynamics, which we attributed to the translational diffusion of interfacial molecules, while the water dynamics in the pore center is barely affected by the interface hydrophilicity.

A complete determination of $ε(k)$ is achieved, from very low wave-vectors up to the end of Pitaeskii's plateau. The results compare favorably in the whole the wave-vector range with the predictions of the dynamic many-body theory (DMBT). At low wave-vectors, bridging the gap between ultrasonic data and former neutron measurements, the evolution with the pressure from anomalous to normal dispersion, as well as the peculiar wave-vector dependence of the phase and group velocities, are accurately characterized. The thermodynamic properties have been calculated analytically, developing Landau's model, using the measured dispersion curve. A good agreement is found below 0.85 K between direct heat capacity measurements and the calculated specific heat, if thermodynamically consistent power series expansions are used. The thermodynamic properties have also been calculated numerically; in this case, the results are applicable with excellent accuracy up to 1.3 K, a temperature above which the dispersion relation itself becomes temperature dependent.

The measured residual entropy is that of a hard core dimer liquid, as predicted. Inclusion of Coulomb interactions allows for a quantitative description of both the thermodynamic data and the magnetisation dynamics, with the energy scale given by deconfined defects in the emergent ionic crystal. Our data reveal low energy excitations, as well as a large distribution of energy barriers down to low temperatures, while the magnetic response to an applied field suggests that domain wall pinning is important; results that call for further theoretical modelling.

Hybrid organolead perovskites (HOP) have started to establish themselves in the field of photovoltaics, mainly due to their great optoelectronic properties and steadily improving solar cell efficiency. Study of the lattice dynamics is key in understanding the electron-phonon interactions at play, responsible for such properties. Here, we investigate, via neutron and Raman spectroscopies, the optical phonon spectrum of four different HOP single crystals: MAPbBr$_3$, FAPbBr$_3$, MAPbI$_3$, and $α$-FAPbI$_3$. Low temperature spectra reveal weakly dispersive optical phonons, at energies as low as 2-5~meV, which seem to be the origin of the limit of the charge carriers mobilities in these materials. The temperature dependence of our neutron spectra shows as well a significant anharmonic behaviour, resulting in optical phonon overdamping at temperatures as low as 80~K, questionning the validity of the quasi-particle picture for the low energy optical modes at room temperature where the solar cells operate.

In contrast to magnetic order formed by electrons' dipolar moments, ordering phenomena associated with higher-order multipoles (quadrupoles, octupoles, etc.) are more difficult to characterize because of the limited choice of experimental probes that can distinguish different multipolar moments. The heavy-fermion compound CeB6 and its La-diluted alloys are among the best-studied realizations of the long-range-ordered multipolar phases, often referred to as "hidden order". Previously the hidden order in phase II was identified as primary antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) and field-induced octupolar (AFO) order. Here we present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of collective excitations in the phase II of CeB6. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) in fields up to 16.5 T reveals a new high-energy mode above 14 T in addition to the low-energy magnetic excitations. The experimental dependence of their energy on the magnitude and angle of the applied magnetic field is compared to the results of a multipolar interaction model. The magnetic excitation spectrum in rotating field is calculated within a localized approach using the pseudo-spin presentation for the Gamma8 states. We show that the rotating-field technique at fixed momentum can complement conventional INS measurements of the dispersion at constant field and holds great promise for identifying the symmetry of multipolar order parameters and the details of inter-multipolar interactions that stabilize hidden-order phases.

Spin liquids are highly correlated yet disordered states formed by the entanglement of magnetic dipoles$^1$. Theories typically define such states using gauge fields and deconfined quasiparticle excitations that emerge from a simple rule governing the local ground state of a frustrated magnet. For example, the '2-in-2-out' ice rule for dipole moments on a tetrahedron can lead to a quantum spin ice in rare-earth pyrochlores - a state described by a lattice gauge theory of quantum electrodynamics$^{2-4}$. However, f-electron ions often carry multipole degrees of freedom of higher rank than dipoles, leading to intriguing behaviours and 'hidden' orders$^{5-6}$. Here we show that the correlated ground state of a Ce$^{3+}$-based pyrochlore, Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$, is a quantum liquid of magnetic octupoles. Our neutron scattering results are consistent with the formation of a fluid-like state of matter, but the intensity distribution is weighted to larger scattering vectors, which indicates that the correlated degrees of freedom have a more complex magnetization density than that typical of magnetic dipoles in a spin liquid. The temperature evolution of the bulk properties in the correlated regime below 1 Kelvin is well reproduced using a model of dipole-octupole doublets on a pyrochlore lattice$^{7-8}$. The nature and strength of the octupole-octupole couplings, together with the existence of a continuum of excitations attributed to spinons, provides further evidence for a quantum ice of octupoles governed by a '2-plus-2-minus' rule. Our work identifies Ce$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ as a unique example of a material where frustrated multipoles form a 'hidden' topological order, thus generalizing observations on quantum spin liquids to multipolar phases that can support novel types of emergent fields and excitations.

The hybrid halide perovskites MAPbI$_{3}$, MAPbI$_{2.94}$Cl$_{0.06}$, and MAPbCl$_{3}$ (MA - methylammonium) have been investigated using inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) with the aim of elucidating the impact of chloride substitution on the rotational dynamics of MA. In this context, we discuss the influence of the inelastic neutron scattering caused by low-energy phonons on the QENS resulting from the MA rotational dynamics in MAPbI$_{3-x}$Cl$_{x}$. Through a comparative temperature-dependent QENS investigation with different energy resolutions, which allow a wide Fourier time window, we achieved a consistent description of the influence of chlorine substitution in MAPbI$_{3}$ on to the MA dynamics. Our results show that chlorine substitution in the low temperature orthorhombic phase leads to a weakening of the hydrogen bridge bonds since the characteristic relaxation times of C$_{3}$ rotation at 70 K in MAPbCl$_{3}$ (135 ps) and MAPbI$_{2.94}$Cl$_{0.06}$ (485 ps) are much shorter than in MAPbI$_{3}$ (1635 ps). For the orthorhombic phase, we obtained the activation energies from the temperature-dependent characteristic relaxation times $τ$C$_{3}$ by Arrhenius fits indicating lower values of E$_{a}$ for MAPbCl$_{3}$ and MAPbI$_{2.94}$Cl$_{0.06}$ compared to MAPbI$_{3}$. We also performed QENS analyses at 190 K for all three samples. Here we observed that MAPbCl$_{3}$ shows slower MA rotational dynamics than MAPbI$_{3}$ in the disordered structure.

We report neutron scattering and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of the 2D spin-1/2 frustrated magnet BaCdVO(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$. At temperatures well below $T_{\sf N}\approx 1K$, we show that only 34 % of the spin moment orders in an up-up-down-down strip structure. Dominant magnetic diffuse scattering and comparison to published $μ$sr measurements indicates that the remaining 66 % is fluctuating. This demonstrates the presence of strong frustration, associated with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, and points to a subtle ordering mechanism driven by magnon interactions. On applying magnetic field, we find that at $T=0.1$ K the magnetic order vanishes at 3.8 T, whereas magnetic saturation is reached only above 4.5 T. We argue that the putative high-field phase is a realization of the long-sought bond-spin-nematic state.

Hidden-order phases that occur in a number of correlated f-electron systems are among the most elusive states of electronic matter. Their investigations are hindered by the insensitivity of standard physical probes, such as neutron diffraction, to the order parameter that is usually associated with higher-order multipoles of the f-orbitals. The heavy-fermion compound Ce3Pd20Si6 exhibits magnetically hidden order at subkelvin temperatures, known as phase II. Additionally, for magnetic field applied along the [001] cubic axis, another phase II' was detected, but the nature of the transition from phase II to phase II' remained unclear. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to demonstrate that this transition is associated with a change in the propagation vector of the antiferroquadrupolar order from (111) to (100). Despite the absence of magnetic Bragg scattering in phase II', its ordering vector is revealed by the location of an intense magnetic soft mode at the (100) wave vector, orthogonal to the applied field. At the II-II' transition, this mode softens and transforms into quasielastic and nearly Q-independent incoherent scattering, which is likely related to the non-Fermi-liquid behavior recently observed at this transition. Our experiment also reveals sharp collective excitations in the field-polarized paramagnetic phase, after phase II' is suppressed in fields above 4 T.

Spin correlations, which are notably observed in nominally elastic scattering, show short-ranged correlations around $L$ points [$q = (\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2},\tfrac{1}{2})$], tiny antiferromagnetic Bragg scattering at $L$ and $Γ$ points, and pinch-point type structures around $Γ$ points. The short-ranged spin correlations were analyzed using a random phase approximation (RPA) assuming the paramagnetic state and two-spin interactions among Ising spins. These analyses have shown that the RPA scattering intensity well reproduces the experimental data using temperature and $x$ dependent coupling constants of up to 10-th neighbor site pairs. This suggests that no symmetry breaking occurs in the QSL sample, and that a quantum treatment beyond the semi-classical RPA approach is required. Implications of the experimental data and the RPA analyses are discussed.

The influence of a staggered molecular field in frustrated rare-earth pyrochlores, produced via the magnetic iridium occupying the transition metal site, can generate exotic ground states, such as the fragmentation of the magnetization in the Ho compound. At variance with the Ising Ho$^{3+}$ moment, we focus on the behavior of the quasi isotropic magnetic moment of the Gd$^{3+}$ ion at the rare-earth site. By means of macroscopic measurements and neutron scattering, we find a complex situation where different components of the magnetic moment contribute to two antiferromagnetic non-collinear arrangements: a high temperature all in - all out order induced by the Ir molecular field, and Palmer and Chalker correlations that tend to order at much lower temperatures. This is enabled by the anisotropic nature of the Gd-Gd interactions and requires a weak easy-plane anisotropy of the Gd$^{3+}$ moment due to the mixing of the ground state with multiplets of higher spectral terms.

The dynamic structure factor of superfluid $^4$He has been investigated at very low temperatures by inelastic neutron scattering. The measurements combine different incoming energies resulting in an unprecedentedly large dynamic range with excellent energy resolution, covering wave vectors $Q$ up to 5 Å$^{-1}$ and energies $ω$ up to 15 meV. A detailed description of the dynamics of superfluid $^4$He is obtained from saturated vapor pressure up to solidification. The single-excitation spectrum is substantially modified at high pressures, as the maxon energy exceeds the roton-roton decay threshold. A highly structured multi-excitation spectrum is observed at low energies, where clear thresholds and branches have been identified. Strong phonon emission branches are observed when the phonon or roton group velocities exceed the sound velocity. The spectrum is found to display strong multi-excitations whenever the single-excitations face disintegration following Pitaevskii's type a or b criteria. At intermediate energies, an interesting pattern in the dynamic structure factor is observed in the vicinity of the recoil energy. All these features, which evolve significantly with pressure, are in very good agreement with the Dynamic Many-body calculations, even at the highest densities, where the correlations are strongest.

We investigate the doping-induced changes in the electronic structure of CeB$_6$ on a series of substituted Ce$_{1-x}R_x$B$_6$ samples ($R$ = La, Nd) using diffuse neutron scattering. We observe a redistribution of magnetic spectral weight across the Brillouin zone, which we associate with the changes in the Fermi-surface nesting properties related to the modified charge carrier concentration. In particular, a strong diffuse peak at the corner of the Brillouin zone ($R$ point), which coincides with the propagation vector of the elusive antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) order in CeB$_6$, is rapidly suppressed by both La and Nd doping, like the AFQ order itself. The corresponding spectral weight is transferred to the $X(00\frac{1}{2})$ point, ultimately stabilizing a long-range AFM order at this wave vector at the Nd-rich side of the phase diagram. At an intermediate Nd concentration, a broad diffuse peak with multiple local maxima of intensity is observed around the $X$ point, evidencing itinerant frustration that gives rise to multiple ordered phases for which Ce$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$B$_6$ is known. On the La-rich side of the phase diagram, however, dilution of the magnetic moments prevents the formation of a similar $(00\frac{1}{2})$-type order despite the presence of nesting. Our results demonstrate how diffuse neutron scattering can be used to probe the nesting vectors in complex f-electron systems directly, without reference to the single-particle band structure, and emphasize the role of Fermi surface geometry in stabilizing magnetic order in rare-earth hexaborides.

The search for two dimensional quantum spin liquids, exotic magnetic states with an entangled ground state remaining disordered down to zero temperature, has been a great challenge in frustrated magnetism during the last decades. Recently, fractionalized excitations, called spinons, emerging from these states, have been evidenced in kagome and triangular antiferromagnets. In contrast, quantum ferromagnetic spin liquids in two dimensions, namely quantum kagome ices, have been less investigated, yet their classical counterparts exhibit amazing properties, magnetic monopole crystals as well as magnetic fragmentation. Here we show that, by applying a magnetic field on the pyrochlore oxide Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, which has been shown to develop three dimensional quantum magnetic fragmentation in zero field, we are able to reduce the dimension of the system and to create a dynamic kagome ice state. Our results open the way to the observation of the quantum kagome ice state which was recently investigated theoretically.

In a quantum spin liquid, the magnetic moments of the constituent electron spins evade classical long-range order to form an exotic state that is quantum entangled and coherent over macroscopic length scales [1-2]. Such phases offer promising perspectives for device applications in quantum information technologies, and their study can reveal fundamentally novel physics in quantum matter. Quantum spin ice is an appealing proposal of one such state, in which the fundamental ground state properties and excitations are described by an emergent U(1) lattice gauge theory [3-7]. This quantum-coherent regime has quasiparticles that are predicted to behave like magnetic and electric monopoles, along with a gauge boson playing the role of an artificial photon. However, this emergent lattice quantum electrodynamics has proved elusive in experiments. Here we report neutron scattering measurements of the rare-earth pyrochlore magnet Pr$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$ that provide evidence for a quantum spin ice ground state. We find a quasi-elastic structure factor with pinch points - a signature of a classical spin ice - that are partially suppressed, as expected in the quantum-coherent regime of the lattice field theory at finite temperature. Our result allows an estimate for the speed of light associated with magnetic photon excitations. We also reveal a continuum of inelastic spin excitations, which resemble predictions for the fractionalized, topological excitations of a quantum spin ice. Taken together, these two signatures suggest that the low-energy physics of Pr$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$ can be described by emergent quantum electrodynamics. If confirmed, the observation of a quantum spin ice ground state would constitute a concrete example of a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid - a topical state of matter which has so far mostly been explored in lower dimensionalities.

Low-energy spin excitations in any long-range ordered magnetic system in the absence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy are gapless Goldstone modes emanating from the ordering wave vectors. In helimagnets, these modes hybridize into the so-called helimagnon excitations. Here we employ neutron spectroscopy supported by theoretical calculations to investigate the magnetic excitation spectrum of the isotropic Heisenberg helimagnet ZnCr2Se4 with a cubic spinel structure, in which spin-3/2 magnetic Cr3+ ions are arranged in a geometrically frustrated pyrochlore sublattice. Apart from the conventional Goldstone mode emanating from the (0 0 q) ordering vector, low-energy magnetic excitations in the single-domain proper-screw spiral phase show soft helimagnon modes with a small energy gap of ~0.17 meV, emerging from two orthogonal wave vectors (q 0 0) and (0 q 0) where no magnetic Bragg peaks are present. We term them pseudo-Goldstone magnons, as they appear gapless within linear spin-wave theory and only acquire a finite gap due to higher-order quantum-fluctuation corrections. Our results are likely universal for a broad class of symmetric helimagnets, opening up a new way of studying weak magnon-magnon interactions with accessible spectroscopic methods.

The complexity embedded in condensed matter fertilizes the discovery of new states of matter, enriched by ingredients like frustration. Illustrating examples in magnetic systems are Kitaev spin liquids, skyrmions phases, or spin ices. These unconventional ground states support exotic excitations, for example the magnetic charges in spin ices, also called monopoles. Beyond their discovery, an important challenge is to be able to control and manipulate them. Here, we propose a new mechanism to inject monopoles in a spin ice through a staggered magnetic field. We show theoretically, and demonstrate experimentally in the Ho$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ pyrochlore iridate, that it results in the stabilization of a monopole crystal, which exhibits magnetic fragmentation. In this new state of matter, the magnetic moment fragments into an ordered part and a persistently fluctuating one. Compared to conventional spin ices, the different nature of the excitations in this fragmented state opens the way to novel tunable field-induced and dynamical behaviors.

We explore the field-temperature phase diagram of the XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, by means of magnetization and neutron diffraction experiments. Depending on the field strength and direction relative to the high symmetry cubic directions $[001], [1\bar{1}0]$ and $[111]$, the refined field induced magnetic structures are derived from the zero field $ψ_2$ and $ψ_3$ states of the $Γ_5$ irreducible representation which describes the ground state of XY pyrochlore antiferromagnets. At low field, domain selection effects are systematically at play. In addition, for $[001]$, a phase transition is reported towards a $ψ_3$ structure at a characteristic field $H_c^{001}=$ 43 mT. For $[1\bar{1}0]$ and $[111]$, the spins are continuously tilted by the field from the $ψ_2$ state, and no phase transition is found while domain selection gives rise to sharp anomalies in the field dependence of the Bragg peaks intensity. For $[1\bar{1}0]$, these results are confirmed by high resolution inelastic neutron scattering experiments, which in addition allow us to determine the field dependence of the spin gap. This study agrees qualitatively with the scenario proposed theoretically by Maryasin {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 93}, 100406(R) (2016)], yet the strength of the field induced anisotropies is significantly different from theory.

We present an experimental study of the quantum spin ice candidate pyrochlore coumpound \przr\ by means of magnetization measurements, specific heat and neutron scattering up to 12 T and down to 60 mK. When the field is applied along the $[111]$ and $[1\bar{1}0]$ directions, ${\bf k}=0$ field induced structures settle in. We find that the ordered moment rises slowly, even at very low temperature, in agreement with macroscopic magnetization. Interestingly, for $H \parallel [1\bar{1}0]$, the ordered moment appears on the so called $α$ chains only. The spin excitation spectrum is essentially {\it inelastic} and consists in a broad flat mode centered at about 0.4 meV with a magnetic structure factor which resembles the spin ice pattern. For $H \parallel [1\bar{1}0]$ (at least up to 2.5 T), we find that a well defined mode forms from this broad response, whose energy increases with $H$, in the same way as the temperature of the specific heat anomaly. We finally discuss these results in the light of mean field calculations and propose a new interpretation where quadrupolar interactions play a major role, overcoming the magnetic exchange. In this picture, the spin ice pattern appears shifted up to finite energy because of those new interactions. We then propose a range of acceptable parameters for \przr\, that allow to reproduce several experimental features observed under field. With these parameters, the actual ground state of this material would be an antiferroquadrupolar liquid with spin-ice like excitations.
