Concurrent natural time scales related to relaxation, recombination, trapping, and drifting processes rule the semiconductor heterostructures' response to external drives when charge carrier fluxes are induced. This paper highlights the role of stoichiometry not only for the quantitative tuning of the electron-hole dynamics but also for significant qualitative contrasts of time-resolved optical responses during the operation of resonant tunneling devices. Therefore, similar device architectures and different compositions have been compared to elucidate the correlation among structural parameters, radiative recombination processes, and electron-hole pair and minority carrier relaxation mechanisms. When these ingredients intermix with the electronic structure in Sb-based tunneling devices, it is proven possible to assess various time scales according to the intensity of the current flux, contrary to what has been observed in As-based tunneling devices with similar design and transport characteristics. These time scales are strongly affected not only by the filling process in the $Γ$ and L states in Sb-based double-barrier quantum wells but also by the small separation between these states, compared to similar heterostructures based on As.

This study analyzes the factors affecting the configuration and consolidation of green ports in Colombia. For this purpose a case stady of maritime cargo ports of Cartagena, Barranquilla and Santa Marta is performed addressing semiestructured interviews to identify the factors contributing to the consolidation of green ports and the factors guiding the sustainability management in the ports that have not yet been certified as green ports. The results show that environmental regulations are atarting point not the key factor to consolidate asgreen ports. As a conclusions, the conversion of Colombian to green ports should not be limited to the attaiment of certifications, such as Ecoport certification, but should ensure the contribution to sustainable development through economic, social and environmental dimensions and the achievement of the SDGs

We study the magneto-transport and magneto-electroluminescence properties of purely n-doped GaAs/Al$_{0.6}$Ga$_{0.4}$As resonant tunneling diodes with an In$_{0.15}$Ga$_{0.85}$As quantum well and emitter prewell. Before the resonant current condition, magneto-transport measurements reveal charge carrier densities comparable for diodes with and without the emitter prewell. The Landau level splitting is observed in the electroluminescence emission from the emitter prewell, enabling the determination of the charge carrier build-up. Our findings show that magneto-electroluminescence spectroscopy techniques provide useful insights on the charge carrier dynamics in resonant tunneling diodes and is a versatile tool to complement magneto-transport techniques. This approach will drive the way for developing potentially more efficient opto-electronic resonant tunneling devices, by e.g., monitoring voltage dependent charge accumulation for improving built-in fields and hence to maximize photodetector efficiency and/or minimize optical losses.

Pilot studies are highly recommended in experiments with animals when little is known about the anticipated values of the mean of the variable under study, its variance or the probability of response. They are also recommended to test the feasibility of the animal model or the experimental technique. However, the sample size required for a pilot study has received little attention and typical sizes practically used go from 5 to 20 animals disregarding any statistical consideration. Pilot studies are a particular case of precision driven experiments in which the sample size is designed according to a desired precision. In this article we provide some statistical guidance on the selection of the sample size of a pilot study whose driving force is the accuracy desired for the determination of the unknown parameters. We provide formulas and design tables for the sample size when trying to determine the standard deviation of a population, its mean, the probability of a certain feature or event, the correlation between two variables, and the survival time before an event occurs. All the calculations performed in this article can also be freely performed on the web through the online calculator available at http://i2pc.es/coss/Programs/SampleSizeCalculator/index.html. An immediate consequence of our analysis is that typical pilot sizes (5-20) are normally result in a very small precision and that the researcher should be aware of this fact before carrying out a pilot study.

We consider mechanisms of directed transport in a ratchet model comprising, besides the external freedom where transport occurs, a chemical freedom that replaces the familiar external driving by an autonomous dynamics providing energy input, and an internal freedom representing a functional mode of a motor molecule. The dependence of the current on various parameters is studied in numerical simulations of our model. In particular, we point out the role of the internal freedom as a buffer between energy input and output of mechanical work that allows a temporary storage of injected energy and can contribute to the efficiency of current generation.
