We present new photometric and spectroscopic observations and analyses for the eclipsing binary systems V1241 Tau and GQ Dra. Our photometric light and radial velocity curves analyses combining with the TESS light curves show that both are conventional semi-detached binary systems. Their absolute parameters are also derived. We present the $O-C$ analyses of the systems and we propose the most possible orbital period modulating mechanisms. Furthermore, Fourier analyses are applied to the photometric residual data of the systems to check for the pulsational behavior of the components. We conclude that the primary component of the system GQ Dra is a $δ$ Sct type pulsator with a dominant pulsation frequency of 18.58 d$^{-1}$ based on our $B$ filter residual light curve although it can not be justified by 30-minute cadence TESS data. No satisfactory evidence of pulsational behaviour for V1241 Tau was verified. Finally, the evolutionary tracks of the components of both systems are calculated, while their locations within evolutionary diagrams are compared with other Algol-type systems.

Abstract:
We present results of a study of the variability of the marginal Am star HD\,176843 observed in the {\it Kepler} field. {\it Kepler} photometry and ground-based spectroscopy are used to investigate the light variations of the star. HD\,176843 is classified as a marginal Am star that shows $δ$\ Sct type pulsations. From an analysis of the {\it Kepler} time series, we find that the light curve of HD…

From an analysis of the {\it Kepler} time series, we find that the light curve of HD\,176843 is dominated by three modes with frequencies $f_{1}$=0.1145, $f_{2}$=0.0162 and $f_{3}$=0.1078 d$^{-1}$. The amplitude of the radial velocity variations of about 10 km/s is much more than the radial velocity errors and allows us to conclude clear radial velocity variations. Using the radial velocity data and the adopted spectra, the orbital solution of HD\,176843 is also obtained with an orbital period of 34.14 days. However, the available photometric data show no significant evidence for any possible motion in the binary system.

The observed temperature distribution of contact binaries derived from SDSS photometry

Abstract:
Data from the VSX, SDSS DR12, and Gaia DR2 catalogs were combined in order to explore the observed temperature distribution of known contact binaries. Color-temperature relations were applied to calculate the effective temperatures of approximately 20000 binaries and a temperature distribution was built using the results with a precision better than 160 K. The temperature distribution shifts to higher temperatures when increasing the distance of the observed objects. The distribution contains a a previously detected bump in the 6000-7000 K range. It is shown that this second maximum is caused by distant and highly reddened objects that are systematically more luminous than contact binaries in this temperature range. We argue that these objects are other variables, possibly semi-detached binaries, misclassified as contact binaries and that the actual temperature distribution of contact binaries does not contain such a peak.

Abstract:
We report the discovery of two massive eccentric systems with BRITE data, $τ$ Ori and $τ$ Lib, showing heartbeat effects close to the periastron passage. $τ$ Lib exhibits shallow eclipses that will soon vanish due to the apsidal motion in the system. In neither system, tidally excited oscillations were detected.

Abstract:
A new investigation of the variability of the SPB-type star 53 Per is presented. The analysis of the BRITE photometry allowed us to determine eight independent frequencies and the combination one. Five of these frequencies and the combination one were not known before. In addition, we gathered more than 1800 new moderate and high-resolution spectra of 53 Per spread over approximately six months. T…

Five of these frequencies and the combination one were not known before. In addition, we gathered more than 1800 new moderate and high-resolution spectra of 53 Per spread over approximately six months. Their frequency analysis revealed four independent frequencies and the combination one, all consistent with the BRITE results.

In this paper we describe the echelle spectrograph of the 2 meter telescope of the Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory. The spectrograph is a cross-dispersed, bench-mounted, fiber-fed instrument giving a resolution from $\sim$30000 to $\sim$45000. The spectral range obtained in one single image is from 3900 to 9000 Å. We describe the parameters of the fiber injection and the guiding unit, of the spectrograph itself, and of the detector. The identified orders and the resulting resolving power are presented. The opportunity to increase of the resolution by using a narrower slit is discussed and the corresponding loss of flux is calculated. The expected signal-to-noise ratio for a set of stars of different magnitudes was derived. Some of the first results obtained with ESpeRo are shortly described.
