Recent high-precision $e^+e^-\to c\bar{c}$ data from the BESIII and Belle are highly useful to understand the vector charmonium pole structure and puzzling lineshapes due to the exotic hadron candidates $Y$. We thus conduct a global coupled-channel analysis of most of the available data (9 two-body, 9 three-body, and 1 four-body final states) in $\sqrt{s}=3.75-4.7$ GeV. Not only cross sections but also invariant mass distributions of subsystems are fitted. Our model includes dozens of (quasi) two-body states that nonperturbatively couple with each other through bare charmonium excitations and particle-exchange mechanisms required by the three-body unitarity. The amplitudes obtained from the fits are analytically continued to vector charmonium and $Z_c$ poles. We do not find a $ψ(4160)$ pole that has been considered well-established. Instead, we find two poles of $\sim 4230$ MeV; $ψ(4230)$ with $Γ= 36$ MeV and a broader one with $Γ= 114$ MeV. Two $Z_c$ poles are found as virtual states $\sim 40$ MeV below the $D^*\bar{D}^{(*)}$ thresholds, being consistent with lattice QCD results. This work presents the first global analysis to determine the vector charmonium and $Z_c$ poles, thereby paving the way to extracting detailed properties of the prominent exotic hadron candidates from data.

The LHCb's amplitude analysis identified the peak with the first hidden-charm pentaquark with strangeness $P_{ψs}^Λ(4338)$. We conduct a coupled-channel amplitude analysis of the LHCb data by simultaneously fitting the $M_{J/ψΛ}$, $M_{J/ψ\bar{p}}$, $M_{Λ\bar{p}}$, and $\cosθ_{K^*}$ distributions. Rather than the Breit-Wigner fit employed in the LHCb analysis, we consider relevant threshold effects and a unitary $Ξ_c\bar{D}$-$Λ_c\bar{D}_s$ coupled-channel scattering amplitude from which $P_{ψs}^Λ$ poles are extracted for the first time. In our default fit, the $P_{ψs}^Λ(4338)$ pole is almost a $Ξ_c \bar{D}$ bound state at $( 4338.2\pm 1.4)-( 1.9\pm 0.5 )\,i$ MeV. Our default model also fits a large fluctuation at the $Λ_c\bar{D}_s$ threshold, giving a $Λ_c\bar{D}_s$ virtual state, $P_{ψs}^Λ(4255)$, at $4254.7\pm 0.4$ MeV. We also found that the $P_{ψs}^Λ(4338)$ peak cannot solely be a kinematical effect, and a nearby pole is needed.

Recent BESIII data on radiative $J/ψ$ decays from $\sim 10^{10}$ $J/ψ$ samples should significantly advance our understanding of the controversial nature of $η(1405/1475)$. This motivates us to develop a three-body unitary coupled-channel model for radiative $J/ψ$ decays to three-meson final states of any partial wave ($J^{PC}$). Basic building blocks of the model are bare resonance states such as $η(1405/1475)$ and $f_1(1420)$, and $πK$, $K\bar{K}$, and $πη$ two-body interactions that generate resonances such as $K^*(892)$, $K^*_0(700)$, and $a_0(980)$. This model reasonably fits $K_SK_Sπ^0$ Dalitz plot pseudo data generated from the BESIII's $J^{PC}=0^{-+}$ amplitude for $J/ψ\toγK_SK_Sπ^0$. The experimental branching ratios of $η(1405/1475)\toηππ$ and $η(1405/1475)\toγρ$ relative to that of $η(1405/1475)\to K\bar{K}π$ are simultaneously fitted. Our $0^{-+}$ amplitude is analytically continued to find three poles, two of which correspond to $η(1405)$ on different Riemann sheets of the $K^*\bar{K}$ channel, and the third one for $η(1475)$. This is the first pole determination of $η(1405/1475)$ and, furthermore, the first-ever pole determination from analyzing experimental Dalitz plot distributions with a manifestly three-body unitary coupled-channel framework. Process-dependent $ηππ$, $γπ^+π^-$, and $πππ$ lineshapes of $J/ψ\toγ(0^{-+})\to γ(ηππ)$, $γ(γρ)$, and $γ(πππ)$ are predicted, and are in reasonable agreement with data. A triangle singularity is shown to play a crucial role to cause the large isospin violation of $J/ψ\toγ(πππ)$.

The data shows that all the peaks and also dips in the spectra are located at thresholds of seemingly relevant meson-meson channels. While the LHCb analysis fitted the peaks with Breit-Wigner resonances, threshold kinematical cusps might be the cause of such structures. We thus analyze the LHCb data considering the threshold cusps. Our model is simultaneously fitted to $J/ψφ$, $J/ψK^+$, and $K^+φ$ invariant mass distributions. The threshold cusps fit well all the $X$, $Z_{cs}$, and dip structures. Our analysis indicates that spin-parity of the $X(4274)$ and $X(4500)$ structures are $0^-$ and $1^-$, respectively. This is different from the LHCb's spin-parity assignments ($1^+$ and $0^+$). The number of fitting parameters can be significantly reduced by considering the relevant threshold cusps. Our analysis shows that $D_s^{(*)}\bar{D}^{*}$ scattering lengths are consistent with zero. This disfavors an explanation of $Z_{cs}(4000)$ and $Z_{cs}(4220)$ as $D_s^{(*)}\bar{D}^{*}$ molecules, which is consistent with lattice QCD via the SU(3) relation.

We conduct a three-body unitary coupled-channel analysis of experimental Monte-Carlo outputs for radiative $J/ψ$ decays via $η(1405/1475)$: $K_SK_Sπ^0$ Dalitz plot distributions from the BESIII, and branching ratios of $γ(ηπ^+π^-)$ and $γ(γπ^+π^-)$ final states relative to that of $γ(K\bar{K}π)$. Our model systematically considers (multi-)loop diagrams and an associated triangle singularity, which is critical in making excellent predictions on $η(1405/1475)\to πππ$ lineshapes and branching ratios. The $η(1405/1475)$ pole locations are revealed for the first time. Two poles for $η(1405)$ are found on different Riemann sheets of the $K^*\bar{K}$ channel, while one pole for $η(1475)$. The $η(1405/1475)$ states are described with two bare states dressed by continuum states. The lower bare state would be an excited $η^\prime$, while the higher one could be an excited $η^{(\prime)}$, hybrid, glueball, or their mixture. This work presents the first-ever pole determination based on a manifestly three-body unitary coupled-channel framework applied to experimental three-body final state distributions (Dalitz plots).

The $M_{J/ψΛ}$ distribution also shows a large fluctuation at the $Λ_c\bar{D}_s$ threshold, hinting the existence of a possible $P_{ψs}^Λ(4255)$. In this work, we determine the $P_{ψs}^Λ(4338)$ and $P_{ψs}^Λ(4255)$ pole positions for the first time. For this purpose, we fit a $B^-\to J/ψΛ\bar{p}$ model to the $M_{J/ψΛ}$, $M_{J/ψ\bar{p}}$, $M_{Λ\bar{p}}$, and $\cosθ_{K^*}$ distributions from the LHCb simultaneously; $χ^2/{\rm ndf}\sim 1.21$. Then we extract $P_{ψs}^Λ$ poles from a unitary $Ξ_c\bar{D}$-$Λ_c\bar{D}_s$ coupled-channel scattering amplitude built in the model. In our default fit, the $P_{ψs}^Λ(4338)$ pole is found at $( 4338.2\pm 1.4)-( 1.9\pm 0.5 )\,i$ MeV while the $P_{ψs}^Λ(4255)$ pole at $4254.7\pm 0.4$ MeV. The $P_{ψs}^Λ(4338)$ and $P_{ψs}^Λ(4255)$ are mostly $Ξ_c \bar{D}$ bound and $Λ_c\bar{D}_s$ virtual states, respectively. Through our analysis, the data disfavors a hypothesis of $P_{ψs}^Λ(4338)$ as merely a kinematical effect. This pole determination, which is important in its own right, sets a primary basis to study the nature of the $P_{ψs}^Λ$ states.

Recent LHCb's amplitude analysis on $B^+\to J/ψφK^+$ suggests the existence of exotic $X$ and $Z_{cs}$ hadrons, based on an assumption that Breit-Wigner resonances describe all the peak structures. However, all the peaks and also dips in the spectra are located at relevant meson-meson thresholds where threshold kinematical cusps might cause such structures. This points to the importance of an independent amplitude analysis with due consideration of the kinematical effects, and this is what we do in this work. Our model fits well $J/ψφ$, $J/ψK^+$, and $K^+φ$ invariant mass distributions simultaneously, demonstrating that all the $X$, $Z_{cs}$, and dip structures can be well described with the ordinary $s$-wave threshold cusps. Spin-parity of the $X(4274)$ and $X(4500)$ structures are respectively $0^-$ and $1^-$ from our model, as opposed to $1^+$ and $0^+$ from the LHCb's. With all relevant threshold cusps considered, the number of fitting parameters seems to be significantly reduced. The LHCb data requires $D_s^{(*)}\bar{D}^{*}$ scattering lengths in our model to be consistent with zero, disfavoring $D_s^{(*)}\bar{D}^{*}$ molecule interpretations of $Z_{cs}(4000)$ and $Z_{cs}(4220)$ and, via the SU(3) relation, being consistent with previous lattice QCD results.

These coincidences suggest a close connection between the structures and the thresholds, which however has not been seriously considered in previous theoretical studies on the $X$ structures. In fact, if we utilize this connection and interpret the $X$ structures as common $s$-wave threshold cusps, we face a difficulty: $X(4274)$ and $X(4500)$ have spin-parity that conflict with the experimentally determined ones. In this work, we introduce double triangle mechanisms that cause threshold cusps significantly sharper than the ordinary one-loop ones of the same spin-parity. We demonstrate that all the $X$ and dip structures are well described by a combination of one-loop and double-triangle threshold cusps, thereby proposing a novel interpretation of the $X$ and dip structures.

Though puzzling, the data actually offer an important hint to understand the nature of the pentaquark candidates. We develop a model to analyze the $B_s^0\to J/ψp\bar{p}$ data. We find that a $Σ_c\bar{D}$ one-loop mechanism causes a threshold cusp that fits well the $P_c(4337)^+$ peak. Also, the $Σ_c\bar{D}$ and $Λ_c\bar{D}^{*}$ threshold cusps interfere with each other to reproduce an oscillating behavior in the proton helicity angle distribution. These results combined with our earlier analysis on $Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^-$ indicate that $P_c(4312)^+$ and $P_c(4337)^+$ are created by different interference patterns between the $Σ_c\bar{D}$ and $Λ_c\bar{D}^{*}$ (anomalous) threshold cusps. We propose a novel scenario for the peak structures, usually interpreted as hidden charm pentaquark ($P_c$) contributions, in the LHCb's $Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^-$ data. The key idea is to utilize leading or lower-order singularities from double triangle mechanisms. The singularities cause anomalous threshold cusps, which are significantly more singular than the ordinary ones, at the $Σ_c^{(*)}\bar{D}^{(*)}$ threshold. We demonstrate that the double triangle amplitudes interfere with other common mechanisms to create peak structure that fit well the $P_c(4312)^+$, $P_c(4380)^+$, and $P_c(4457)^+$ peaks in the data. This picture is completely different from commonly used ones such as hadron molecules and compact pentaquarks. When the final $(J/ψπ^+π^-)π$ invariant mass is around the $D^*\bar D^*$ threshold, one of the triangle mechanisms causes a triangle singularity and generates a sharp $X(3872)$-like peak in the $J/ψπ^+π^-$ invariant mass distribution. The Breit-Wigner mass and width fitted to the spectrum are 3871.68 MeV (a few keV above the $D^{*0}\bar{D}^0$ threshold) and $\sim$0.4 MeV, respectively. These Breit-Wigner parameters hardly depends on a choice of the model parameters. Comparing with the precisely measured $X(3872)$ mass and width, $3871.69\pm 0.17$ MeV and $< 1.2$ MeV, the agreement is remarkable. When studying the $X(3872)$ signal from this process, this non-resonant contribution has to be understood in advance. We also study a charge analogous process $B^0\to (J/ψπ^0π^-) K^+π^0$. A similar triangle singularity exists and generates an $X^-(3876)$-like peak.

Understanding the nature of the hidden charm pentaquark(like) signals in the LHCb data for $Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^-$ is a central problem of hadron spectroscopy. We propose a scenario completely different from previous ones such as hadron molecules and compact pentaquarks. We identify relevant double triangle mechanisms with leading or lower-order singularities. The associated anomalous threshold cusps at the $Σ_c^{(*)}\bar{D}^{(*)}$ thresholds are significantly more singular than the ordinary ones. Then we demonstrate that the double triangle amplitudes reproduce the peak structures of $P_c(4312)^+$, $P_c(4380)^+$, and $P_c(4457)^+$ in the LHCb data, through an interference with other common mechanisms. We discuss the possibility of extracting the neutron-neutron scattering length $a_{nn}$ and effective range $r_{nn}$ from cross section data ($d^2σ/dM_{nn}/dΩ_π$), as a function of the $nn$ invariant mass $M_{nn}$, for $π^+$ photoproduction on the deuteron ($γd\to π^+nn$). The analysis is based on a $γd\to π^+nn$ reaction model in which realistic elementary amplitudes for $γp\to π^+n$, $NN\to NN$, and $πN\to πN$ are built in. We show that $M_{nn}$ dependence (lineshape) of a ratio $R_{\rm th}$, $d^2σ/dM_{nn}/dΩ_π$ normalized by $dσ/dΩ_π$ for $γp\toπ^+ n$ and the nucleon momentum distribution inside the deuteron, at the kinematics with $θ_π=0^\circ$ and $E_γ\sim 250$ MeV is particularly useful for extracting $a_{nn}$ and $r_{nn}$ from the corresponding data $R_{\rm exp}$. It is found that $R_{\rm exp}$ with 2% error, resolved into the $M_{nn}$ bin width of 0.04 MeV (corresponding to the $p_π$ bin width of 0.05 MeV$/c$), can determine $a_{nn}$ and $r_{nn}$ with uncertainties of $\pm 0.21$ fm and $\pm 0.06$ fm, respectively, for the case of $a_{nn}=-18.9$ fm and $r_{nn}=2.75$ fm. The requirement of such narrow bin widths indicates that the momenta of the incident photon and the emitted $π^+$ have to be measured with high resolutions. This can be achieved by utilizing virtual photons of very small $Q^2$ from electron scattering at Mainz MAMI facility. The proposed method for determining $a_{nn}$ and $r_{nn}$ from $γd\to π^+ nn$ has a great experimental advantage over the previous one utilizing $π^- d\toγnn$ for being free from the formidable task of controlling the neutron detection efficiency and its uncertainty.

Triangle singularity appearing as an $X(3872)$-like peak in $B\to (J/ψπ^+π^-) Kπ$

We consider a triangle diagram for $B^0\to (J/ψπ^+π^-) K^+π^-$ where an $X(3872)$ peak has been observed experimentally. We demonstrate that a triangle singularity inherent in the triangle diagram creates a sharp peak in the $J/ψπ^+π^-$ invariant mass distribution when the final $(J/ψπ^+π^-)π$ invariant mass is at and around the $D^*\bar D^*$ threshold. The position and width of the peak is 3871.68 MeV (a few keV above the $D^{*0}\bar{D}^0$ threshold) and $\sim$0.4 MeV, respectively, in perfect agreement with the precisely measured $X(3872)$ mass and width: $3871.69\pm 0.17$ MeV and $< 1.2$ MeV. This remarkable agreement is virtually parameter-free. The result indicates that the considered mechanism has to be understood in advance when separating an $X(3872)$-pole contribution from $B^0\to (J/ψπ^+π^-) K^+π^-$ data; the separation yields an $X(3872)π$ lineshape that could be used to determine the $X(3872)$ mass. We suggest a method to set a constraint on the triangle mechanism by analyzing a charge analogous process $B^0\to (J/ψπ^0π^-) K^+π^0$ where a similar triangle singularity generates an $X^-(3876)$-like peak.

All surviving theoretical models interpreted these candidates as four-quark states, until we recently identified a compelling alternative. We discuss that kinematical singularities in triangle loop diagrams induce a resonance-like behavior that can consistently explain the properties (such as spin-parity, mass, width, and Argand plot) of $Z_c(4430)$, $Z_c(4200)$, $Z_1(4050)$ and $Z_2(4250)$ from experiments. In terms of the triangle singularities, we can also naturally understand interesting experimental findings such as the appearance (absence) of $Z_c(4200)$($Z_c(4430)$)-like contribution in $Λ_b^0\to J/ψpπ^-$, and the highly asymmetric shape of the spectrum bump for $Z_1(4050)$; the other theoretical models have not successfully addressed these points. Although Pakhlov et al. proposed another triangle diagram to generate a $Z_c(4430)$-like bump, we argue that this scenario is very unlikely.

The ANL-Osaka model, which was obtained by analyzing the data of $πN$, $γN$, $N(e,e'π)$ and $N(ν,μ\,π) $ reactions up to invariant mass $W=$ 2 GeV, is used to generate the matrix elements of current operators relevant to pion-production off the nucleon. Medium effects on the $Δ$ (1232) component of meson-exchange current are included by using a $Δ$-nucleus potential determined from the previous $Δ$-hole model studies of pion-nucleus reactions. Nuclear correlations in the initial target state and in the spectator system(s) are modeled using realistic hole spectral functions. As a first step, we show that the data of $^{12}$C$(e,e')$ up to the $Δ$ (1232) region can be described reasonably well. The interplay between the pion production and two-body meson-exchange mechanisms is shown to be essential in improving the agreement with the data in the ``dip'' region, between the quasielastic and the $Δ$ (1232) peaks. Predictions for $^{12}$C$(ν,μ\,π)$ have also been made. They can be used to estimate pion-emission rates in neutrino-nucleus cross section, which constitutes an important systematic uncertainty to the reconstructed neutrino energy. With further improvements of the Metropolis Monte-Carlo techniques to account for final states comprised of more than two particles, our approach can be employed up to $W=$ 2 GeV, where two-pion production and higher mass nucleon resonances must be included for analyzing the data from accelerator-based neutrino-oscillation experiments.

I overview our recent activity with the Argonne-Osaka dynamical coupled-channels (DCC) approach that provides a unified description of various electroweak meson productions on single nucleon and nucleus. First I discuss the DCC model of a single nucleon. The DCC model has been developed through a comprehensive analysis of $πN, γN\to πN, ηN, KΛ, KΣ$ reaction data. The model has been further extended to finite $Q^2$ region by analyzing pion electroproduction data, and to neutrino-induced reactions using the PCAC relation. Next I discuss applications of the DCC model to electroweak meson productions on the deuteron. We consider impulse mechanism supplemented by final state interactions (FSI) due to $NN$ and meson-nucleon rescatterings. Using this model, I discuss FSI corrections needed to extract $γ$-neutron reaction observables from $γd\to πNN$, and a novel method to extract $ηN$ scattering length from $γd\to ηpn$. I also discuss FSI corrections on the existing neutrino-nucleon pion production data that had been extracted from neutrino-deuteron data.

Photoproduction of the $ω$ meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{ωp}$ and effective range $r_{ωp}$ between the $ω$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{ωp} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{ωp}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. The real and imaginary parts for $a_{ωp}$ and $r_{ωp}$ are determined separately for the first time. A small $P$-wave contribution does not affect the obtained values.

$Z_1(4050)$ and $Z_2(4250)$ observed in $\bar{B}^0\toχ_{c1}K^-π^+$ by the Belle Collaboration are candidates of charged charmonium-like states that minimally includes two quarks and two antiquarks. While $Z_1(4050)$ and $Z_2(4250)$ have been interpreted as tetraquark states previously, we propose a completely different scenario based on a kinematical effect called the triangle singularity. We demonstrate that the triangle singularities cause in the $χ_{c1}π^+$ invariant mass distribution resonance-like bumps that fit very well the Belle data. If these bumps are simulated by the $Z_1(4050)$ and $Z_2(4250)$ resonance excitations, the spin-parity of them are predicted to be $1^-$ for $Z_1(4050)$ and $1^+$ or $1^-$ for $Z_2(4250)$. The bump corresponding to $Z_1(4050)$ has a highly asymmetric shape, which the Belle data exactly indicate. We show that the asymmetric shape originates from an interplay between the triangle singularity and the opening of the $X(3872)π^+$ channel near the triangle-singularity energy. This characteristic lineshape could be used to discriminate different interpretations of $Z_1(4050)$. An interesting prediction from interpretting $Z_1(4050)$ and $Z_2(4250)$ as the triangle singularities is that similar bumps caused by the same mechanisms possibly appear also in $\bar{B}^0\to J/ψK^-π^+$ data; the already observed $Z_c(4200)$ corresponds to $Z_2(4250)$ of $J^P=1^+$.

$Z_c(4430)$ discovered by the Belle and confirmed by the LHCb in $\bar{B}^0\toψ(2S)K^-π^+$ is generally considered to be a charged charmonium-like state that includes minimally two quarks and two antiquarks. $Z_c(4200)$ found in $\bar{B}^0\to J/ψK^-π^+$ by the Belle is also a good candidate of a charged charmonium-like state. We demonstrate that kinematical singularities in triangle loop diagrams induce a resonance-like behavior that can consistently explain the properties (mass, width, and Argand plot) of $Z_c(4430)$ and $Z_c(4200)$ from the experimental analyses. The triangle diagrams include only experimentally well-established hadrons. Applying this idea to $Λ_b^0\to J/ψpπ^-$, we also identify triangle singularities that behave like $Z_c(4200)$, but no triangle diagram is available for $Z_c(4430)$. This is consistent with the LHCb's finding that their description of the $Λ_b^0\to J/ψpπ^-$ data is significantly improved by including a $Z_c(4200)$ contribution while $Z_c(4430)$ seems to hardly contribute. Even though the proposed mechanisms have uncertainty in the absolute strengths which are currently difficult to estimate, they are certainly a compelling alternative to tetraquark-based interpretations of $Z_c(4430)$ and $Z_c(4200)$.

This kinematics is ideal to extract the low-energy $η$-nucleon scattering parameters such as $a_{ηN}$ (scattering length) and $r_{ηN}$ (effective range) because the $η$-nucleon elastic scattering is significantly enhanced. We show that if a ratio $R$, the $γd\toηpn$ cross section divided by the $γp\toηp$ cross section convoluted with the proton momentum distribution in the deuteron, is measured with 5% error, ${\rm Re}[a_{ηN}]$ (${\rm Re}[r_{ηN}]$) can be determined at the precision of $\sim\pm$0.1 fm ($\sim\pm$0.5 fm), significantly narrowing down the currently estimated range of the parameters. The current and near-future neutrino oscillation experiments require significantly improved neutrino-nucleus reaction models. Neutrino-nucleon pion production data play a crucial role to validate corresponding elementary amplitudes that go into such neutrino-nucleus models. Thus the currently available data extracted from charged-current neutrino-deuteron reaction data ($ν_μd\to μ^-πNN$) must be corrected for nuclear effects such as the Fermi motion and final state interactions (FSI). We study $ν_μd\to μ^-πNN$ with a theoretical model including the impulse mechanism supplemented by FSI from $NN$ and $πN$ rescatterings. An analysis of the spectator momentum distributions reveals that the FSI effects significantly reduce the spectra over the quasi-free peak region, and leads to a useful recipe to extract information of elementary $ν_μN\to μ^-πN$ processes using $ν_μd\to μ^-πNN$ data, with the important FSI corrections taken into account. We provide $ν_μN\to μ^-πN$ total cross sections by correcting the deuterium bubble chamber data for the FSI and Fermi motion. The results will bring a significant improvement on neutrino-nucleus reaction models for the near-future neutrino-oscillation experiments.

Recent experimental and theoretical analyses used an extraction method that does not impose a cut on the final $πN$ invariant mass $W$. I demonstrate that the use of this method can result in the $γn\to πN$ observables that are seriously distorted by the nucleon Fermi motion, and that one can efficiently avoid this problem by imposing a cut on $W$. It is also shown that the use of kinematical cuts of recent experimental analyses can still leave in the selected samples substantial FSI effects that must be corrected in extracting the $γn \toπN$ cross sections. In terms of the nucleon- and pion-exchange mechanisms, I give the first qualitative explanation of the FSI corrections, obtained in a recent MAMI experiment, for extracting $γn\to π^0 n$ cross sections.

The study of pion production in nuclei is important for signal and background determinations in current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. The first step, however, is to understand the pion production reactions at the free nucleon level. We present an exhaustive study of the charged-current and neutral-current neutrino and antineutrino pion production off nucleons, paying a special attention to the angular distributions of the outgoing pion. We show, using general arguments, that parity violation and time-reversal odd correlations in the weak differential cross sections are generated from the interference between different contributions to the hadronic current that are not relatively real. Next, we present a detailed comparison of three, state of the art, microscopic models for electroweak pion production off nucleons, and we also confront their predictions with polarized electron data, as a test of the vector content of these models. We also illustrate the importance of carrying out a comprehensive test at the level of outgoing pion angular distributions, going beyond comparisons done for partially integrated cross sections, where model differences cancel to a certain extent. Finally, we observe that all charged and neutral current distributions show sizable anisotropies, and identify channels for which parity violating effects are clearly visible. Based on the above results, we conclude that the use of isotropic distributions for the pions in the center of mass of the final pion-nucleon system, as assumed by some of the Monte Carlo event generators, needs to be improved by incorporating the findings of microscopic calculations.

We show that the FSI effects still visibly remain in the extracted $γ$`$n$'$\toπN$ unpolarized cross sections and polarization asymmetries $E$ even after the kinematical cuts are applied. We also find the FSI effects on $γ$`$n$'$\toπ^0n$ can be somewhat different from those on $γ$`$p$'$\toπ^0p$.

We develop a reaction model for $η$ photoproduction off the deuteron ($γd\toηpn$), and study the reaction at a special kinematics, where the photon beam energy is $\sim 0.94$ GeV and the scattered proton is detected at $\sim 0^\circ$, for the purpose of determining the $η$-nucleon scattering length ($a_{ηN}$) and effective range ($r_{ηN}$). In this kinematics, the $η$-nucleon elastic rescattering is significantly enhanced while other background mechanisms being suppressed. We show that a ratio $R$, the $γd\toηpn$ cross section divided by the $γp\toηp$ cross section convoluted with the proton momentum distribution in the deuteron, has a very good resolving power of $a_{ηN}$ and $r_{ηN}$. We conclude that the $R$ data with 5% error, binned in 1 MeV width of the $η$-neutron invariant mass, can determine ${\rm Re}[a_{ηN}]$ (${\rm Re}[r_{ηN}]$) at the precision of $\sim\pm$0.1 fm ($\sim\pm$0.5 fm), significantly narrowing down the previously estimated ranges of the parameters. To arrive at the conclusion, it is essential to use the $γd\toηpn$ reaction model equipped with elementary amplitudes that are well constrained by $πN$ and $γN$ reaction data through a sophisticated coupled-channels analysis. This result strongly motivates the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH) at Tohoku University to measure $R$.

We demonstrate that partial wave amplitudes extracted from $D^+\to K^-π^+π^+$ Dalitz plot with a unitary coupled-channel model are significantly different from those obtained with an isobar model. The unitary coupled-channel model takes account of hadronic rescattering mechanisms involving all three mesons that have been missed in conventioanl isobar model analyses. The rescattering mechanisms contribute largely, and can triplicate the $D^+\to {K}^-π^+π^+$ decay width within our analysis. These findings deliver a warning that analysis results obtained with isobar models should be looked with a caution. The determination of the CKM angle $γ/φ_3$ is a highly relevant problem.

A precise description of neutrino-nucleus reactions will play a key role in addressing fundamental questions such as the leptonic CP violation and the neutrino mass hierarchy through analyzing data from next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments. The neutrino energy relevant to the neutrino-nucleus reactions spans a broad range and, accordingly, the dominant reaction mechanism varies across the energy region from quasi-elastic scattering through nucleon resonance excitations to deep inelastic scattering. This corresponds to transitions of the effective degree of freedom for theoretical description from nucleons through meson-baryon to quarks. The main purpose of this review is to report our recent efforts towards a unified description of the neutrino-nucleus reactions over the wide energy range; recent overall progress in the field is also sketched. Starting with an overview of the current status of neutrino-nucleus scattering experiments, we formulate the cross section to be commonly used for the reactions over all the energy regions. A description of the neutrino-nucleon reactions follows and, in particular, a dynamical coupled-channels model for meson productions in and beyond the $Δ$(1232) region is discussed in detail. We then discuss the neutrino-nucleus reactions, putting emphasis on our theoretical approaches. We start the discussion with electroweak processes in few-nucleon systems studied with the correlated Gaussian method. Then we describe quasi-elastic scattering with nuclear spectral functions, and meson productions with a $Δ$-hole model. Nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions determined through a global analysis are also discussed. Finally, we discuss issues to be addressed for future developments.

The maximum entropy method is examined as a new tool for solving the ill-posed inversion problem involved in the Lorentz integral transformation (LIT) method. We analyze electron-induced reaction data for both proton and neutron targets to determine the vector current form factors up to $Q^2\le$ 3.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$. Axial-current matrix elements are derived in accordance with the Partially Conserved Axial Current (PCAC) relation to the $πN$ interactions of the DCC model. As a result, we can uniquely determine the interference pattern between resonant and non-resonant amplitudes. Our calculated cross sections for neutrino-induced single-pion productions are compared with available data, and are found to be in reasonable agreement with the data. We also calculate the double-pion production cross sections in the resonance region, for the first time, with relevant resonance contributions and channel couplings. The result is compared with the double-pion production data. For a future development of a neutrino-nucleus reaction model and/or a neutrino event generator for analyses of neutrino experiments, the DCC model presented here can give a useful input.

A dynamical coupled-channels (DCC) model for neutrino-nucleon reactions in the resonance region is developed. Starting from the DCC model that we have previously developed through an analysis of $πN, γN\to πN, ηN, KΛ, KΣ$ reaction data for $W\le 2.1$ GeV, we extend the model of the vector current to $Q^2\le$ 3.0 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ by analyzing electron-induced reaction data for both proton and neutron targets. We derive axial-current matrix elements that are related to the $πN$ interactions of the DCC model through the Partially Conserved Axial Current (PCAC) relation. Consequently, the interference pattern between resonant and non-resonant amplitudes is uniquely determined. We calculate cross sections for neutrino-induced meson productions, and compare them with available data. Our result for the single-pion production reasonably agrees with the data. We also make a comparison with the double-pion production data. Our model is the first DCC model that can give the double-pion production cross sections in the resonance region. We also make comparison of our result with other existing models to reveal an importance of testing the models in the light of PCAC and electron reaction data. The DCC model developed here will be a useful input for constructing a neutrino-nucleus reaction model and a neutrino event generator for analyses of neutrino experiments.

Resonance parameters (pole masses and residues) associated with the excited states of hyperons, Lambda^* and Sigma^*, are extracted within a dynamical coupled-channels model developed recently by us [Phys. Rev. C 90, 065204 (2014)] through a comprehensive partial-wave analysis of the K^- p --> barK N, pi Sigma, pi Lambda, eta Lambda, K Xi data up to invariant mass W = 2.1 GeV. We confirm the existence of resonances corresponding to most, if not all, of the four-star resonances rated by the Particle Data Group. We also find several new resonances, and in particular propose a possible existence of a new narrow J^P=3/2^+ Lambda resonance that couples strongly to the eta Lambda channel. The J^P=1/2^- Lambda resonances located below the barK N threshold are also discussed. Comparing our extracted pole masses with the ones from a recent analysis by the Kent State University group, some significant differences in the extracted resonance parameters are found, suggesting the need of more extensive and accurate data of K^- p reactions including polarization observables to eliminate such an analysis dependence of the resonance parameters. In addition, the determined large branching ratios of the decays of high-mass resonances to the pi Sigma^* and barK^* N channels also suggest the importance of the data of 2 --> 3 reactions such as K^- p --> pi pi Lambda and K^- p --> pi barK N. Experiments on measuring cross sections and polarization observables of these fundamental reactions are highly desirable at hadron beam facilities such as J-PARC for establishing the Lambda^* and Sigma^* spectrum.

We perform a coupled-channel analysis of pseudodata for the D+-> K-pi+pi+ Dalitz plot. The pseudodata are generated from the isobar model of the E791 Collaboration, and are reasonably realistic. We demonstrate that it is feasible to analyze the high-quality data within a coupled-channel framework that describes the final state interaction of D+-> K-pi+pi+ as multiple rescatterings of three pseudoscalar mesons through two-pseudoscalar-meson interactions in accordance with the two-body and three-body unitarity. The two-pseudoscalar-meson interactions are designed to reproduce empirical pi pi and pi bar K scattering amplitudes. Furthermore, we also include mechanisms that are beyond simple iterations of the two-body interactions, i.e., a three-meson force, derived from the hidden local symmetry model. A picture of hadronic dynamics in D+-> K-pi+pi+ described by our coupled-channel model is found to be quite different from those of the previous isobar-type analyses. For example, we find that the D+-> K-pi+pi+ decay width can get almost triplicated when the rescattering mechanisms are turned on. Among the rescattering mechanisms, those associated with the rho(770) bar K0 channel, which contribute to D+-> K-pi+pi+ only through a channel coupling, give a large contribution, and significantly improve the quality of the fits. The K-pi+ s-wave amplitude from our analysis is reasonably consistent with those extracted from the E791 model independent partial-wave analysis; the hadronic rescattering and the coupling to the rho(770) bar K0 channel play a major role here. We also find that the dressed D+ decay vertices have phases, induced by the strong rescatterings, that strongly depend on the momenta of the final pseudoscalar mesons. Although the conventional isobar-type analyses have assumed the phases to be constant, this common assumption is not supported by our more microscopic viewpoint.

We develop a dynamical coupled-channels model of K^- p reactions, aiming at extracting the parameters associated with hyperon resonances and providing the elementary antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes that can be used for investigating various phenomena in the strangeness sector such as the production of hypernuclei from kaon-nucleus reactions. The model consists of (a) meson-baryon (MB) potentials v_{M'B',MB} derived from the phenomenological SU(3) Lagrangian, and (b) vertex interactions Gamma_{MB,Y*} for describing the decays of the bare excited hyperon states (Y*) into MB states. The model is defined in a channel space spanned by the two-body barK N, pi Sigma, pi Lambda, eta Lambda, and K Xi states and also the three-body pi pi Lambda and pi barK N states that have the resonant pi Sigma* and barK* N components, respectively. The resulting coupled-channels scattering equations satisfy the multichannel unitarity conditions and account for the dynamical effects arising from the off-shell rescattering processes. The model parameters are determined by fitting the available data of the unpolarized and polarized observables of the K^- p --> barK N, pi Sigma, pi Lambda, eta Lambda, K Xi reactions in the energy region from the threshold to invariant mass W=2.1 GeV. Two models with equally good chi^2 fits to the data have been constructed. The partial-wave amplitudes obtained from the constructed models are compared with the results from a recent partial-wave analysis by the Kent State University group. We discuss the differences between these three analysis results. Our results at energies near the threshold suggest that the higher partial waves should be treated on the same footing as the S wave if one wants to understand the nature of Lambda(1405)1/2^- using the data below the barK N threshold, as will be provided by the J-PARC E31 experiment.

These weak processes are evaluated in the standard nuclear physics approach, which consists of one-nucleon and two-nucleon-exchange currents and nuclear wave functions generated by a high precision nucleon-nucleon potential. In addition to the cross sections for these processes involving the deuteron, we present neutrino emissivities due to these processes calculated for typical profiles of core-collapsed supernovae. These novel neutrino emissivities are compared with the standard neutrino emission mechanisms. We find that the neutrino emissivity due to the electron capture on the deuteron is comparable to that on the proton in the deuteron abundant region. The implications of the new channels involving deuterons for the supernova mechanism are discussed.

Recent CLAS data for the pi Sigma invariant mass distributions (line-shapes) in the gamma p -> K^+ pi Sigma reaction are theoretically investigated. The line-shapes have peaks associated with the Lambda(1405) excitation. Our model consists of gauge invariant photo-production mechanisms, and the chiral unitary model that gives the rescattering amplitudes where Lambda(1405) is contained. It is found that, while the pi Sigma line-shape data in the Lambda(1405) region are successfully reproduced by our model for all the charge states, the production mechanism is not so simple that we need to introduce parameters associated with short-range dynamics to fit the data. Our detailed analysis suggests that the nonresonant background contribution is not negligible, and its sizable effect shifts the Lambda(1405) peak position by several MeV. We also analyze the data using a Breit-Wigner amplitudes instead of those from the chiral unitary model. The nucleon resonances are investigated within a dynamical coupled-channels model of pi N and gamma N reactions up to the invariant mass W = 2 GeV. The meson-baryon (MB) channels included in the calculations are MB = pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma, and pi pi N that has pi Delta, rho N, and sigma N resonant components. The meson-baryon amplitudes T_{M'B',MB}(W) are calculated from solving a set of coupled-channels integral equations defined by an interaction Hamiltonian consisting of (a) meson-exchange interactions v_{M'B',MB} derived from phenomenological Lagrangian, and (b) vertex interactions N* --> MB for describing the transition of a bare excited nucleon state N* to a channel MB. The parameters of v_{M'B',MB} are mainly constrained by the fit to the data of pi N --> pi N in the low energy region up to W =1.4 GeV. The bare masses of N* and the N* --> MB parameters are then determined in simultaneous fits to the data of pi N --> pi N up to W =2.3 GeV and those of pi N --> eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma and gamma N --> pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma up to W = 2.1 GeV. The pole positions and residues of nucleon resonances are extracted by analytically continuing the meson-baryon amplitudes T_{M'B',MB}(W) to the complex Riemann energy surface. From the extracted residues, we have determined the N* --> pi N, gamma N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma transition amplitudes at resonance poles. We compare the resonance pole positions from our analysis with those given by Particle Data Group and the recent coupled-channels analyses by the Juelich and Bonn-Gatchina groups. Four results agree well only for the first N* in each spin-parity-isospin (J^P,I) channel. For higher mass states, the number of states and their resonance positions from four results do not agree well. We discuss the possible sources of the discrepancies and the need of additional data from new hadron facilities such as J-PARC.

Next generation neutrino oscillation experiments will need a quantitative understanding of neutrino-nucleus interaction far better than ever. Kinematics covered by the relevant neutrino-nucleus interaction spans wide region, from the quasi-elastic, through the resonance region, to the deeply inelastic scattering region. The neutrino-nucleus interaction in each region has quite different characteristics. Obviously, it is essential to combine different expertise to construct a unified model that covers all the kinematical region of the neutrino-nucleus interaction. Recently, several experimentalists and theorists got together to form a collaboration to tackle this problem. In this contribution, we report the collaboration's recent activity and a goal in near future.

Abstract:
We study forward neutrino-induced meson production off the nucleon in the resonance region. Our calculation is based on a dynamical coupled-channels (DCC) model that reasonably describes pi (gamma) N -> pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma data in the resonance region. We apply the PCAC hypothesis to the DCC model to relate the pi N reaction amplitude to the forward neutrino reaction amplitude. In this…

In this way, we give a prediction for nu N -> pi N, pi pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma reaction cross sections. The predicted nu N -> pi pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma cross sections are, for the first time, based on a model extensively tested by data. We compare our results with those from the Rein-Sehgal model that has been very often used in the existing Monte Carlo simulators for neutrino experiments. We find a significant difference between them.

We have investigated the model dependence of meson resonance properties extracted from the Dalitz-plot analysis of the three-pions photoproduction reactions on the nucleon. Within a unitary model developed in Phys. Rev. D 84, 114019 (2011), we generate Dalitz-plot distributions as data to perform an isobar model fit that is similar to most of the previous analyses of three-pion production reactions. It is found that the resonance positions from the two models agree well when both fit the data accurately, except for the resonance poles near branch points. The residues of the resonant amplitudes extracted from the two models and by the usual Breit-Wigner procedure agree well only for the isolated resonances with narrow widths. For overlapping resonances, most of the extracted residues could be drastically different. Our results suggest that even with high precision data, the resonance extraction should be based on models within which the amplitude parametrization is constrained by three-particle unitarity condition.
