The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in asymmetric multilayers is crucial for spintronics. However, it is also significant even in symmetric ones, and unveiling its atomic-level origin remains an issue. We use electron microscopy to propose defect-mediated bulk DMI in Pt/Co/Pt. We find an enhancement of the net DMI by increasing sputter gas pressure. The samples have a compositional gradient, but their compositional asymmetry is weak. Our analysis suggests that the asymmetric distribution of dislocations in the compositional gradient regions generates bulk DMI. Our results indicate the importance of bulk DMI in multilayers and could facilitate the development of spintronic devices.

Magnetic racetrack memory (RTM) uses a series of either domains or skyrmions as data bits along nanowires. However, it lacks reading error detection capability in nanowires, which requires high electric current density for the deterministic motion of domain walls (DWs) or skyrmions. Here, we propose a method of a reading error-detectable RTM and explore domain-stored skyrmion structures for this RTM. This method uses domains as memory cells and assigns the presence and absence of a skyrmion in a domain to different bits, enabling the electrical signal of any memory cells to output the opposite sign to that of the adjacent memory cells. Using simulations and Lorentz microscopy, we demonstrate that perpendicularly magnetized nanowires with relatively large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can achieve domain-stored skyrmion structures. Additionally, our simulations show that when DWs approach to skyrmions during spin-orbit torque-induced motion, angular momentum transfers from DWs to skyrmions, resulting in fast motion of skyrmions.

The superconducting transition temperature of the obtained [(SnSe)$_{1+δ}$]$_m$(NbSe$_2$) crystals decreased with an increase in the number of SnSe layers per unit cell. As the superconducting anisotropy parameters increase, a significant increase is observed between $m = 4$ and 5. This indicates that the superconducting dimensionality becomes more two-dimensional with an increasing $m$.

REOBiS$_2$ (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Gd in different combinations) single crystals with HEAs at the RE-site were successfully grown using the flux method. The obtained crystals were plate-shaped (1 mm$^2$) with a well-developed c-plane. Ce was present in both trivalent (Ce$^{3+}$) and tetravalent (Ce$^{4+}$) electronic configurations; the concentration of Ce$^{4+}$ at the RE-site was approximately 10 at% in all single crystals. The single crystals showed superconducting transition temperature with zero resistivity within 1.2-4.2 K. The superconducting transition temperature, superconducting anisotropy, electronic specific heat coefficient, and Debye temperature of the crystals were not correlated with the mixed entropy at the RE-site. Except for the electronic specific heat coefficient, the variation of these parameters as a function of mixed entropy showed different trends for equivalent and non-equivalent RE element compositions. Thus, the configuration of RE elements influences the superconducting properties of REOBiS$_2$ single crystals, alluding to a method of modulating transition temperatures.

The obtained whiskers were 0.5-1.0 mm length with approximately 10 um thickness. The width of the flat surface, which corresponds to the ab-plane, was 10-50 um. The RE site of the grown whiskers could be easily substituted by large ionic radius RE elements (Gd, Dy, and Ho). Substitution with small ionic radius RE elements (Tm, Yb, and Lu) resulted in the opposite trend. The superconducting transition temperature and superconducting anisotropy of the grown RE-123 whiskers were 89-93 K and 6-10, respectively. The mixed entropy at the RE site in the RE-123 whiskers did not affect the superconducting transition temperature and superconducting anisotropy.

The band calculations indicate a Dirac semimetal state with nodal lines at the Fermi level. The resistivity and the magnetic susceptibility as functions of temperature are well interpreted in terms of the monomer Mott insulating state instead of the expected semimetal state probably owing to strong electron correlation. In addition, we find that an Arrhenius-type steep reduction of the paramagnetic susceptibility appears below approximately 25 K, which indicates a spin-singlet ground state.

We report the upper critical field (Bc2) in the BiCh2-based superconductors CeOBiS1.7Se0.3 and PrO0.5F0.5BiS2-xSex (x = 0, 0.3). Single crystals of CeOBiS1.7Se0.3 and PrO0.5F0.5BiS2-xSex (x = 0, 0.3) were grown using the flux method. Single-crystal structural analysis revealed that the crystal structure at room temperature is tetragonal (P4/nmm). Through electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements, bulk superconductivity was observed in all samples. For CeOBiS1.7Se0.3, the in-plane Bc2 is smaller than the conventional orbital limit and Pauli limit, suggesting that ferromagnetic ordering, which has been observed in a related Ce-containing BiCh2-based compound, affects Bc2 and superconductivity. In contrast, high in-plane Bc2 was observed for PrO0.5F0.5BiS2-xSex (x = 0, 0.3). We propose that the in-plane Bc2 is enhanced by antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling, which arises from the lack of local inversion symmetry.

The nature of superconductivity in BiS$_2$-based superconductors has been controversial while ab-initio calculations proposed this system in close proximity to a charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. Using high-energy high-flux X-ray diffraction, we reveal an intrinsic and long-range CDW phase coexisting with superconductivity in NdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_2$ superconductor ($x$ = 0.37 and 0.3). The CDW wavevector in NdO$_{0.63}$F$_{0.37}$BiS$_2$ correspond Q$_{\rm{CDW}}$ = (0.17, 0.17, 0.5) and is associated with transverse atomic displacements. Interestingly, this wavevector does not match theoretical expectations based on either phonon softening or Fermi surface nesting. In NdO$_{0.7}$F$_{0.3}$BiS$_2$, where the superconducting transition temperature is highest, the CDW satellites are slightly broader and weaker compared to NdO$_{0.63}$F$_{0.37}$BiS$_2$, possibly suggesting the competition with the superconductivity. Lastly, we measure a thermal diffuse scattering across the superconducting transition temperature and find no meaningful changes in favor of the unconventional pairing mechanism. Our result suggests the importance of understanding CDW which might hold a key to the superconductivity in the BiS$_2$-based superconductor.

In the present work, the structural and hitherto unexplored thermal and mechanical properties of NaInS2-xSex (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0) compounds have been studied using the density functional theory. Besides, the elastic anisotropy indices and hardnesses of NaInS2-xSex have been investigated as Se content is varied. The mechanical stability of all the compounds under study has been confirmed. The ratio of shear to bulk modulus (G/B) is low suggesting that the NaInS2-xSex (x = 0.5 and 1.5) compounds exhibit damage tolerant (ductility) properties while rest of the compositions are brittle in nature. The predicted hardness (H) values are also influenced with the Se content in the following order: H (NaInSSe) > H (NaInS2) > H (NaInSe2) > H (NaInS1.5Se0.5) > H (NaInS0.5Se1.5). All the anisotropic indices under study indicate that NaInS2-xSex compounds are anisotropic in nature. The Mulliken bond population analysis suggests that the degree of covalency of In-S/Se bonds decreases when S is substituted by Se. The origin of low Debye temperature (ΘD) and low minimum thermal conductivity (Kmin) have been successfully explained by considering the mean atomic weight (M/n) and average bond strength of the compounds. Temperature dependence of heat capacities (Cv, Cp) and linear thermal expansion coefficient (α ) are also estimated using the quasi-harmonic Debye model and discussed. The low values of Kmin, ΘD and α and damage tolerant behavior clearly indicate that the NaInS2-xSex (x = 0.5 and 1.5) compounds can be used as promising thermal barrier coating materials for high temperature applications.

Solid-state synthesis from powder precursors is the primary processing route to advanced multicomponent ceramic materials. Designing ceramic synthesis routes is usually a laborious, trial-and-error process, as heterogeneous mixtures of powder precursors often evolve through a complicated series of reaction intermediates. Here, we show that phase evolution from multiple precursors can be modeled as a sequence of pairwise interfacial reactions, with thermodynamic driving forces that can be efficiently calculated using ab initio methods. Using the synthesis of the classic high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (YBCO) as a representative system, we rationalize how replacing the common BaCO$_3$ precursor with BaO$_2$ redirects phase evolution through a kinetically-facile pathway. Our model is validated from in situ X-ray diffraction and in situ microscopy observations, which show rapid YBCO formation from BaO$_2$ in only 30 minutes. By combining thermodynamic modeling with in situ characterization, we introduce a new computable framework to interpret and ultimately design synthesis pathways to complex ceramic materials.

We report on the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of two new double-perovskites synthesized under high pressure; Pb2CaOsO6 and Pb2ZnOsO6. Upon cooling below 80 K, Pb2CaOsO6 simultaneously undergoes a metal--insulator transition and develops antiferromagnetic order. Pb2ZnOsO6, on the other hand, remains a paramagnetic metal down to 2 K. The key difference between the two compounds lies in their crystal structure. The Os atoms in Pb2ZnOsO6 are arranged on an approximately face-centred cubic lattice with strong antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange couplings. The geometrical frustration inherent to this lattice prevents magnetic order from forming down to the lowest temperatures. In contrast, the unit cell of Pb2CaOsO6 is heavily distorted up to at least 500 K, including antiferroelectric-like displacements of the Pb and O atoms despite metallic conductivity above 80 K. This distortion relieves the magnetic frustration, facilitating magnetic order which in turn drives the metal--insulator transition. Our results suggest that the phase transition in Pb2CaOsO6 is spin-driven, and could be a rare example of a Slater transition.

Here we report Lorentz electron microscopy experiments and micromagnetic simulations in a similar Heusler material, Mn$_{1.3}$Pt$_{1.0}$Pd$_{0.1}$Sn. Around $B_c \sim$ 420$\,$mT, we find a stochastic reversible transformation and a room temperature coexisting phase of elliptical skyrmions and square-shaped antiskyrmions. The closeness of the energy competition is sensitive to the exchange stiffness constants and sample thickness. Furthermore, we reveal isotropic long-range repulsive interaction between the skyrmions and antiskyrmions regardless of their shapes and the skyrmion helicities, in stark contrast to conventional thought of angle- and helicity-dependent short-range pairwise interactions. The observed interaction possibly results from the topological protection against the intrusion of magnetic flux density coming from skyrmions (antiskyrmions) into antiskyrmions (skyrmions). Our results provide new insight into interacting skyrmions and antiskyrmions and a guide for developing skyrmion-antiskyrmion-based spintronics.

To explore the origin of the two-fold symmetric anisotropy in the BiCh2-based system, we have investigated the electron-doping dependence on the anisotropy by examining the in-plane anisotropy of the magnetoresistance in the superconducting states for a single crystal of LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe under high magnetic fields up to 15 T. We observed a two-fold symmetry of in-plane anisotropy of magnetoresistance for LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe. The results obtained for LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe are quite similar to those observed for LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe, which has a higher electron doping concentration than LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe. Our present finding suggests that the emergence of the in-plane symmetry breaking in the superconducting state is robust to the carrier concentration in the series of LaO1-xFxBiSSe.

Topological defects embedded in or combined with domain walls have been proposed in various systems, some of which are referred to as domain wall skyrmions or domain wall bimerons. However, the experimental observation of such topological defects remains an ongoing challenge. Here, using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, we report the experimental discovery of domain wall bimerons in chiral magnet Co-Zn-Mn(110) thin films. By applying a magnetic field, multidomain structures develop, and simultaneously, chained and isolated bimerons arise as the localized state between the domains with the opposite in-plane components of net magnetization. The multidomain formation is attributed to magnetic anisotropy and dipolar interaction, and domain wall bimerons are stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In addition, micromagnetic simulations show that domain wall bimerons appear for a wide range of conditions in chiral magnets with cubic magnetic anisotropy. Our results promote further study in various fields of physics.

Transport properties of Ce$_{0.85}$F0.15SbS$_{2}$ and undoped CeOSbS$_{2}$ under high pressure were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Electrical resistivity measurements of the Ce$_{0.85}$F0.15SbS$_{2}$ single crystals were performed under various high pressures using a diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond electrodes. The samples showed the insulator to metal transition by applying high pressure up to 30-40 GPa. On the other hand, the undoped CeOSbS$_{2}$ showed almost same transport property with the F-doped sample under high pressure. The valence state analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed a simple valence state of Ce3+ in Ce$_{0.85}$F0.15SbS$_{2}$ and mixed valence state between Ce3+ and Ce4+ in undoped CeOSbS$_{2}$. The valence fluctuation in Ce carried out the comparable transport nature in the both samples. A band calculation suggests that the undoped CeOSbS$_{2}$ could be metallic under high pressure of 30 GPa in accordance with the experimental results. A superior thermoelectric property of power factor in CeOSbS$_{2}$ was estimated under high pressure around 20 GPa in comparison with that of ambient pressure.

In this study, we have developed the La2O2Bi3AgS6-type materials by element substitutions to increase the transition temperature (Tc) and to induce bulk nature of superconductivity. A resistivity anomaly observed at 180 K in La2O2Bi3AgS6 was systematically suppressed by Sn substitution for the Ag site. By the Sn substitution, Tc increased, and the shielding volume fraction estimated from magnetization measurements also increased. The highest Tc (= 2.3 K) and the highest shielding volume fraction (~20%) was observed for La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6. The superconducting properties were further improved by Se substitutions for the S site. By the combinational substitutions of Sn and Se, bulk-superconducting phase of La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S5.7Se0.3 with a Tc of 3.0 K (Tconset = 3.6 K) was obtained.

Candidates compounds for new thermoelectric and superconducting materials, which have narrow band gap and flat bands near band edges, were exhaustively searched by the high-throughput first-principles calculation from an inorganic materials database named AtomWork. We focused on PbBi$_2$Te$_4$ which has the similar electronic band structure and the same crystal structure with those of a pressure-induced superconductor SnBi2Se4 explored by the same data-driven approach. The PbBi$_2$Te$_4$ was successfully synthesized as single crystals using a melt and slow cooling method. The core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed Pb2+, Bi3+ and Te2- valence states in PbBi$_2$Te$_4$. The thermoelectric properties of the PbBi$_2$Te$_4$ sample were measured at ambient pressure and the electrical resistivity was also evaluated under high pressure using a diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond electrodes. The resistivity decreased with increase of the pressure, and two pressure-induced superconducting transitions were discovered at 3.4 K under 13.3 GPa and at 8.4 K under 21.7 GPa. The data-driven approach shows promising power to accelerate the discovery of new thermoelectric and superconducting materials.

We present the first experimental evidence for metallicity, superconductivity (SC) and the co-existence of charge density waves (CDW) in the quasi-one-dimensional material HfTe3. The existence of such phenomena is a typical characteristic of the transition metal chalcogenides however, without the application of hydrostatic pressure/chemical doping, it is rare for a material to exhibit the co-existence of both states. Materials such as HfTe3 can therefore provide us with a unique insight into the relationship between these multiple ordered states. By improving on the original synthesis conditions, we have successfully synthesised single phase HfTe3 and confirmed the resultant structure by performing Rietveld refinement. Using low temperature resistivity measurements, we provide the first experimental evidence of SC at ~1.4 K as well as a resistive anomaly indicative of a CDW formation at ~82 K. By the application of hydrostatic-pressure, the resistivity anomaly shifts to higher temperature. The results show that HfTe3 is a promising new material to help study the relationship between SC and CDW.

In the non-superconducting $x$=0.2 composition, ferrodistortive displacements of the pyramidal sulfur ions break the tetragonal symmetry and a superlattice structure emerges with peaks appearing at $h+k$ odd reflections superimposed on the even reflections of the $P4/nmm$ symmetry. In the superconducting $x$=0.4 composition, similar ferrodistortive displacements are observed but with different magnitudes coupled with in-plane Bi distortions. The distortions are indicative of charge fluctuations that may lead to charge localization and suppression of superconductivity.

Conventional Rashba spin polarization is caused by the combination of strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) and spatial inversion asymmetry. However, Rashba- and Dresselhaus-type spin-split states are predicted in LaOBiS$_2$ system by recent theory even though the crystal structure is centrosymmetric, which stem from the local inversion asymmetry of active BiS$_2$ layer. By performing high-resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we have investigated the electronic band structure and spin texture of superconductor LaO$_{0.55}$F$_{0.45}$BiS$_2$. Our studies present direct spectroscopic evidence for the local spin polarization in the vicinity of X point of both valence band and conduction band. Especially the coexistence of Rashba-like and Dresselhaus-like spin textures has been observed in the conduction band for the first time. The finding is of key importance for fabrication of proposed dual-gated spin-field effect transistor (SFET). Moreover, the spin-split band leads to a spin-momentum locking Fermi surface from which novel superconductivity emerges. Our demonstration not only expands the scope of spintronic materials but also enhances the understanding of SOI related superconductivity.

We investigate the superconducting-gap anisotropy in one of the recently discovered BiS$_2$-based superconductors, NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_2$ ($T_c$ $\sim$ 5 K), using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Whereas the previously discovered high-$T_c$ superconductors such as copper oxides and iron-based superconductors, which are believed to have unconventional superconducting mechanisms, have $3d$ electrons in their conduction bands, the conduction band of BiS$_2$-based superconductors mainly consists of Bi 6$p$ electrons, and hence the conventional superconducting mechanism might be expected. Contrary to this expectation, we observe a strongly anisotropic superconducting gap. This result strongly suggests that the pairing mechanism for NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_2$ is unconventional one and we attribute the observed anisotropy to competitive or cooperative multiple paring interactions.

With increasing x, in-plane chemical pressure is enhanced. For x = 0.6, 0.8, and 1, superconducting transitions with a large shielding volume fraction are observed in magnetic susceptibility measurements, and the highest Tc is 3.8 K for x = 0.8. From low-temperature electrical resistivity measurements, a zero-resistivity state is observed for all the samples, and the highest Tc is observed for x = 0.8. With increasing Se concentration, characteristics of electrical resistivity changes from semiconducting-like to metallic, suggesting that the emergence of bulk superconductivity is linked with the enhanced metallicity. A superconductivity phase diagram of the Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2-xSex superconductor is established. Temperature dependences of electrical resistivity show an anomalous two-step transition under high magnetic fields. Hence, the resistivity data are analyzed with assuming in-plane anisotropy of upper critical field.

Both poly-crystalline and single-crystalline CeOBiS2 exhibited zero resistivity below 1.2 K while poly-crystalline LaOBiS2 and PrOBiS2 did not show zero resistivity down to 0.13 K. Superconducting transition temperature of CeOBiS2 was reduced by increasing the applied current density. The superconductivity of CeOBiS2 without chemical doping is likely triggered by the carriers induced by the valence fluctuation between Ce3+ and Ce4+.

To study the superconducting gap structure of BiS$_2$-based layered compound NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_{2}$ ($T$$_{\rm c}$ = 5 K), we measured the thermal conductivity $κ$, which is a sensitive probe of the low-energy quasiparticle spectrum. In the absence of a magnetic field, there is only a very small residual linear term in the thermal conductivity $κ_{0}$/$T$ at $T$ $\rightarrow$ 0, indicating the absence of a residual normal fluid, expected for nodal superconductors. Moreover, the applied magnetic field hardly affects the thermal conductivity in the wide range of the vortex state, indicating the absence of Doppler shifted quasiparticles. These results provide evidence that NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_{2}$ is fully gapped superconductor. The obtained gap structure, along with the robustness of the superconductivity against the impurity, suggest a conventional $s$-wave superconducting state in NdO$_{0.71}$F$_{0.29}$BiS$_{2}$.

The as-grown single crystals exhibit superconductivity at around 3-5 K. The superconducting transition temperature increases with decreasing the ionic radius of the R element. The superconducting anisotropies of the R(O,F)BiS2 single crystals are estimated to be 30-60 according to the effective mass model, whereas the anisotropies for Ce(O,F)BiS2 single crystals are 13-21. The c-axis transport measurements of a single crystal of Pr(O,F)BiS2 under a magnetic field parallel to the ab-plane reveal a "lock-in" state attributed to the Josephson vortex flow. Furthermore, the Ce(O,F)BiS2 single crystals exhibit a magnetic order at the temperature range of 5-7 K that apparently coexist with superconductivity below approximately 3 K.

We grew PrO1-aFaBiS2 single crystals using CsCl/KCl flux. The superconducting anisotropies of the grown single crystals were estimated to be approximately 40-50 from the effective mass model. The c-axis transport properties were characterized using single-crystal s-shaped intrinsic Josephson junctions with a focused ion beam. Along the c-axis, the crystals showed zero resistivity at 2.7 K and a critical current density of 1.33*10^3 A/cm2 at 2.0 K. The current-voltage curve along the c-axis displayed hysteresis. The c-axis transport measurements under a magnetic field parallel to the ab-plane revealed a "lock-in" state due to the Josephson vortex flow, indicating that BiS2 superconductors are promising candidates for intrinsic Josephson junctions.

We clearly observed band dispersions from 2 to 6 eV binding energy and near the Fermi level (${\it E}_{\rm F}$), which are well reproduced by first principles calculations when the spin-orbit coupling is taken into account. The ARPES intensity map near ${\it E}_{\rm F}$ shows a square-like distribution around the $Γ$(Z) point in addition to electronlike Fermi surface (FS) sheets around the X(R) point, indicating that FS of LaO$_{0.54}$F$_{0.46}$BiS$_2$ is in close proximity to the theoretically-predicted topological change.

We demonstrated a pressure-induced phase transition from a low-Tc phase (3.5 K) to a high-Tc phase (8.7 K) in single crystalline PrO0.5F0.5BiS2. The high-Tc phase is easily observed even at 0.7 GPa by uniaxial pressure obtained from a geometric effect of a single crystal with an extremely-thin thickness. For this phase transition, superconducting anisotropy and the coherence length along the c axis change from γ = 20 to 9.3 and from ξc = 0.56 to 0.71 nm respectively. It is suggested that a shrinkage in the c lattice constant by applied uniaxial pressure enhances the three dimensionality in the superconducting state.

We present scanning tunneling microscopy measurements on a cleaved surface of the recently discovered superconductor NdO$_{0.7}$F$_{0.3}$BiS$_{2}$ with a transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) of 5.1 K.Tunneling spectra at 4.2 K (below $T_{\mathrm{c}}$) and 22 K (above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$) show a large spectroscopic gap ($\sim$40 mV), which is inconsistent with the metallic nature demonstrated in bulk measurements. Moreover, we find two interesting real-space electronic features. The first feature is a `checkerboard stripe' electronic state characterized by an alternating arrangement of two types of nanocluster. In one cluster, one-dimensional electronic stripes run along one Bi-Bi direction, whereas, in the other cluster, the stripes run along the other Bi-Bi direction. The second feature is a nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity whose microscopic source seems to be atomic defects on the cleaved surface or dopant F atoms.

Theoretical rotational quenching cross sections and rate coefficients of ortho- and para-H$_2$O due to collisions with He atoms are presented. The complete angular momentum close-coupling approach as well as the coupled-states approximation for angular momentum decoupling were applied to solve the scattering problem for a large range of rotationally-excited states of water. Results are obtained for quenching from initial levels 1$_{1,0}$, 2$_{1,2}$, 2$_{2,1}$, 3$_{0,3}$, 3$_{1,2}$, 3$_{2,1}$, 4$_{1,4}$, 3$_{3,0}$, and 4$_{2,3}$ of ortho-H$_2$O and from initial levels 1$_{1,1}$, 2$_{0,2}$, 2$_{1,1}$, 2$_{2,0}$, 3$_{1,3}$, 3$_{2,2}$, 4$_{0,4}$, 4$_{1,3}$, and 3$_{3,1}$ of para-H$_2$O for kinetic energies from 10$^{-5}$ to 10$^4$ cm$^{-1}$. State-to-state and total deexcitation cross sections and rate coefficients for temperatures between 0.1 and 3000 K are reported. The present state-to-state rate coefficients are found to be in good agreement with previous results obtained by Green and coworkers at high temperatures, but significant discrepancies are obtained at lower temperatures likely due to differences in the adopted potential energy surfaces. Astrophysical applications of the current rate coefficients are briefly discussed.

The classical result of Landau on the existence of kings in finite tournaments (=finite directed complete graphs) is extended to continuous tournaments for which the set X of players is a compact Hausdorff space. The following partial converse is proved as well. Let X be a Tychonoff space which is either zero-dimensional or locally connected or pseudocompact or linearly ordered. If X admits at least one continuous tournament and each continuous tournament on X has a king, then X must be compact. We show that a complete reversal of our theorem is impossible, by giving an example of a dense connected subspace Y of the unit square admitting precisely two continuous tournaments both of which have a king, yet Y is not even analytic (much less compact).
