Inelastic neutron scattering was performed for an iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO0.9D0.1, where most of D (deuterium) replaces oxygen, while a tiny amount goes into interstitial sites. By first-principle calculation, we characterize the interstitial sites for D (and for H slightly mixed) with four equivalent potential minima. Below the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 26 K,new excitations emerge in the range 5-15 meV, while they are absent in the reference system LaFeAsO0.9F0.1. The strong excitations at 14.5 meV and 11.1 meV broaden rapidly around 15 K and 20 K, respectively, where each energy becomes comparable to twice of the superconducting gap. The strong excitations are ascribed to a quantum rattling, or a band motion of hydrogen, which arises only if the number of potential minima is larger than two.

Iron-based superconductors can be categorized as two types of parent compounds by considering the nature of their temperature-induced phase transitions; namely, first order transitions for 122- and 11-type compounds and second-order transitions for 1111-type compounds. This work examines the structural and magnetic transitions (ST and MT) of CaFeAsH by specific heat, X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, and electrical resistivity measurements. Heat capacity measurements revealed a second-order phase transition accompanies an apparent single peak at 96 K. However, a clear ST from the tetragonal to orthorhombic phase and a MT from the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase were detected. The structural (Ts) and Néel temperatures (TN) were respectively determined to be 95(2) and 96 K by X-ray and neutron diffraction and resistivity measurements. This small temperature difference, Ts - TN, was attributed to strong magnetic coupling in the inter-layer direction owing to CaFeAsH having the shortest lattice constant c among parent 1111-type iron arsenides. Considering that a first-order transition takes place in 11- and 122-type compounds with a short inter-layer distance, we conclude that the nature of the ST and MT in CaFeAsH is intermediate in character, between the second-order transition for 1111-type compounds and the first-order transition for other 11- and 122-type compounds.

We investigated the preferred electron dopants at the oxygen sites of 1111-type SmFeAsO by changing the atmospheres around the precursor with the composition of Sm:Fe:As:O = 1:1:1:1-x in high-pressure synthesis. Under H2O and H2 atmospheres, hydrogens derived from H2O or H2 molecules were introduced into the oxygen sites as a hydride ion, and SmFeAsO1-xHx was obtained. However, when the H2O and H2 sources were removed from the synthetic process, nearly stoichiometric SmFeAsO was obtained and the maximum amount of oxygen vacancies introduced remained x = 0.05(4). Density functional theory calculations indicated that substitution of hydrogen in the form of H- is more stable than the formation of an oxygen vacancy at the oxygen site of SmFeAsO. These results strongly imply that oxygen-deficient SmFeAsO1-x reported previously is SmFeAsO1-xHx with hydride ion incorporated unintentionally during high-pressure synthesis.

The 1111-type iron-based superconductor LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln stands for lanthanide) is the first material with a Tc above 50 K, other than cuprate superconductors. Here, we report the Tc for the whole hydrogen-doping range in LaFeAsO1-xHx under pressures of up to 19 GPa. Tc rises to 52 K at 6 GPa for the Tc-valley composition between the two Tc domes. This is the first instance of the Tc exceeding 50 K in La-1111-type iron-based superconductors. On the other hand, the Tc of SmFeAsO1-xHx decreased continually, keeping its single-dome structure up to 15 GPa. The present findings strongly suggest that the main reason for realization of the Tc >50 K observed in RE-1111 compounds (RE: Pr, Sm, and Gd) at ambient pressure is the merging of SC1 and SC2.

The r-T anomaly corresponding to tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition was suppressed by La-substitution and then the superconductivity was observed at an electron doping content of Ne > 0.05. The maximum onset Tc of 47.4 K was reached for Ne = 0.18, which is significant increase compared to 23 K achieved by direct electron doping to the FeAs-layer via Co-substitution to the Fe-site. This value of Tc value fits well to the phenomenological relation between Tc and the bond angle of As-Fe-As in indirectly electron doped LnFeAsO (Ln = Lanthanide). These results indicate that the electron was doped via the indirect mode through the aliovalent ion substitution to CaH-layer (Ca2+ La3+ + e-).

The 1111-type iron arsenide hydride CaFe1-xCoxAsH was synthesized by high-pressure solid-state reaction, and its electronic structure and superconducting properties were investigated. Bulk superconductivity was observed at x = 0.07-0.26. A maximum superconducting critical temperature Tcmax of 23 K was observed at x = 0.07. These values are in agreement with those of CaFe1-xCoxAsF. The calculated Fermi surface of CaFeAsH has a small three-dimensional 3D hole pocket around the Gamma point. This is a result of weak covalent bonding between the As 4p and H 1s orbitals. No such covalency exists in CaFeAsF, because the energy level of the F 2p orbital is sufficiently deep to inhibit overlap with the As 4p orbital. The similar superconducting properties of CaFe1-xCoxAsH and CaFe1-xCoxAsF are explained on the nesting scenario. The small 3D hole pocket of CaFe1-xCoxAsH does not significantly contribute to electron excitation. These findings encourage exploration of hydrogen-containing 1111-type iron-based materials with lower anisotropies and higher Tc applicable to superconducting wires and tapes.

Iron arsenide superconductors based on the material LaFeAsO1-xFx are characterized by a two-dimensional Fermi surface (FS) consisting of hole and electron pockets yielding structural and antiferromagnetic transitions at x = 0. Electron doping by substituting O2- with F- suppresses these transitions and gives rise to superconductivity with a maximum Tc = 26 K at x = 0.1. However, the over-doped region cannot be accessed due to the poor solubility of F- above x = 0.2. Here we overcome this problem by doping LaFeAsO with hydrogen. We report the phase diagram of LaFeAsO1-xHx (x < 0.53) and, in addition to the conventional superconducting dome seen in LaFeAsO1-xFx, we find a second dome in the range 0.21 < x < 0.53, with a maximum Tc of 36 K at x = 0.3. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the three Fe 3d bands (xy, yz, zx) become degenerate at x = 0.36, whereas the FS nesting is weakened monotonically with x. These results imply that the band degeneracy has an important role to induce high Tc.

Utilizing the high stability of calcium and rare earth hydrides, CaFeAsF1-xHx (x = 0.0-1.0) and SmFeAsO1-xHx (x = 0.0-0.47) have been first synthesized using high pressure to form hydrogen-substituted 1111 type iron-arsenide superconductors. Neutron diffraction and density functional calculations have demonstrated that the hydrogens are incorporated as H- ions occupying F- sites in the blocking layer of CaFeAsF. The resulting CaFeAsF1-xHx is non-superconducting, whereas SmFeAsO1-xHx is a superconductor, with an optimal Tc = 55 K at x 0.2. It was found that up to 40% of the O2- ions can be replaced by H- ions, with electrons being supplied into the FeAs-layer to maintain neutrality (O2- = H-+ e-). When x exceeded 0.2, Tc was reduced corresponding to an electron over-doped region.

The Sr1-xLaxFe2As2 phase was dominant up to x = 0.5, and superconductivity was observed at $x \ge 0.2$. A maximum critical temperature Tc of 22 K, and a maximum shielding volume fraction of ~70 % were obtained at x = 0.4. This is the first experimental demonstration of electron-doped superconductivity in 122-type iron pnictides, where electrons were doped through aliovalent substitution at the site of the alkaline earth metal. The optimal Tc was slightly higher than that for the Co-doped (directly electron-doped) samples (19 K), and much lower than that for the hole-doped case (37 K). The bulk superconductivity range was narrower than that for the Co-substituted case, and both ranges were much narrower than that for the hole-doped case. These observations revealed that differences in the electron-doping mode (direct or indirect) did not have a prominent effect on the optimal Tc or superconductivity range, compared with differences in carrier polarity.
