Quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) is a rapidly developing quantum communication approach, where secure information is directly transmitted, providing an alternative to key-based (de)encryption processes via Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). During the last decade, optical QSDC protocols based on discrete variable encodings have been successfully realized. Recently, continuous-variable (CV) QSDC schemes have been proposed, benefiting from less-sophisticated implementations with proven security. Here, we report the first table-top experimental demonstration of a CV-QSDC system and assess its security. For this realization, we analyze the security of different configurations, including coherent and squeezed sources, with Wyner wiretap channel theory in presence of a beam splitter attack. This practical protocol not only demonstrates the principle of QSDC systems based on CV encoding, but also showcases the advantage of squeezed states over coherent ones in attaining enhanced security and reliable communication in lossy and noisy channels. Our realization, which is founded on mature telecom components, paves the way into future threat-less quantum metropolitan networks, compatible with coexisting advanced wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems.

Abstract:
We introduce a general and fast convolution-based method (FCBM) for peridynamics (PD). Expressing the PD integrals in terms of convolutions and computing them by fast Fourier transform (FFT), we reduce the computational complexity of PD models from O(N^2) to O(Nlog_2 N), with N being the total number of discretization nodes. Initial neighbor identification and storing neighbor information is not r…

Initial neighbor identification and storing neighbor information is not required, and, as a consequence, memory allocation scales with O(N) instead of O(N^2), common for existing methods. The method is applicable to bounded domains with arbitrary shapes and boundary conditions via an embedded constraint (EC) approach. We explain the FCBM-EC formulation for certain bond-based and state-based, linear and nonlinear PD models of elasticity and dynamic brittle fracture, as applications. We solve a 3D elastostatic problem and show that the FCBM reduces the computational time from days to hours and from years to days, compared with the original meshfree discretization for PD models. Large-scale computations of PD models are feasible with the new method, and we demonstrate its versatility by simulating, with ease, the difficult problem of multiple crack branching in a brittle plate.

Abstract:
We present a new ordinary state-based peridynamic model (OSB-PD) in 2D consistent with J2 plasticity using a novel decomposition for force and extension states. A new strategy for testing the consistency of an OSB-PD formulation for elastoplasticity is introduced. We present a new ordinary state-based peridynamic model (OSB-PD) in 2D consistent with J2 plasticity using a novel decomposition for force and extension states. A new strategy for testing the consistency of an OSB-PD formulation for elastoplasticity is introduced. In contrast with other similar models, the new elasto-plastic OSB-PD model is objective and works for large rotations. We formulate two rate-independent yield functions equivalent to J2 plasticity with associated flow rules, based on force states and on the strain energy density. An efficient return mapping algorithm for peridynamic formulations in plasticity is proposed. We verify the model against results obtained with Abaqus for the classical formulation using two examples, one featuring plastic deformations under large rotations. The evolution of the plastic zone computed with the new model matches that from the classical model found with Abaqus.

Mode Division Multiplexing (MDM) technique using higher order Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) carrying modes through a channelized bandwidth provides enhanced capacity communication systems. OAM based high-dimensional Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) encrypted channels also improve transmission rate and security. All-optical mode-selective spatial distribution manipulation is a significant function in implemented MDM and QKD networks. This paper proposes a novel versatile-designed integrated optical device with Y$_{cut}$ ridge Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN) photonic wire configuration which acts as spatial mode converter for data modulated on higher order OAM$=\pm2\hbar$ modes. It is schemed in such a way that control the phase of decomposed guided modes by enhanced electro-optic Kerr effect via phase-mismatched cascaded polarization coupling interaction in PPLN sections. The low-loss, high-purity (91 %), and low-voltage proposed device enables to operate compatible with applicable commercial modulators in OAM based MDM and QKD communication systems.

Calculation of the quantum discord requires to find the minimum of the quantum conditional entropy $S(ρ^{AB}|\{Π^B_{k}\})$ over all measurements on the subsystem $B$. In this paper, we provide a simple relation for the conditional entropy as the difference of two Shannon entropies. The relation is suitable for calculation of the quantum discord in the sense that it can by used to obtain the quantum discord for some classes of two-qubit states, without the need for minimization. We also present an analytical procedure of optimization and obtain conditions under which the quantum conditional entropy of a general two-qubit state is stationary. The presented relation is also used to find a tight upper bound on the quantum discord.
