Autonomous Discovery of Tough Structures
Abstract: A key feature of mechanical structures ranging from crumple zones in cars to padding in packaging is their ability to provide protection by absorbing mechanical energy. Designing structures to efficiently meet these needs has profound implications on safety, weight, efficiency, and cost. Despite the wide varieties of systems that must be protected, a unifying design principle is that protective st… ▽ More

Designing Composites with Target Effective Young's Modulus using Reinforcement Learning
Abstract: Advancements in additive manufacturing have enabled design and fabrication of materials and structures not previously realizable. In particular, the design space of composite materials and structures has vastly expanded, and the resulting size and complexity has challenged traditional design methodologies, such as brute force exploration and one factor at a time (OFAT) exploration, to find optimum… ▽ More

In-Flight Performance and Calibration of the LOng Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) for the New Horizons Mission
Abstract: The LOng Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) is a panchromatic (360--910 nm), narrow-angle (field of view = 0.29 deg), high spatial resolution (pixel scale = 1.02 arcsec) visible light imager used on NASA's New Horizons (NH) mission for both science observations and optical navigation. The Space of Planar Soap Bubble Clusters
Abstract: Soap bubbles and foams have been extensively studied by scientists, engineers, and mathematicians as models for organisms and materials, with applications ranging from extinguishing fires to mining to baking bread. Here we provide some basic results on the space of planar clusters of n bubbles of fixed topology. We show for example that such a space of clusters with positive second variation is an… ▽ More

Abstract: A computer study of clusters of up to 200,000 equal-area bubbles shows for the first time that rounding conjectured optimal hexagonal planar soap bubble clusters reduces perimeter.

An improvement to the volcano-scan algorithm for atmospheric correction of CRISM and OMEGA spectral data
Abstract: The observations of Mars by the CRISM and OMEGA hyperspectral imaging spectrometers require correction for photometric, atmospheric and thermal effects prior to the interpretation of possible mineralogical features in the spectra. Here, we report on a simple, yet non-trivial, adaptation to the commonly-used volcano-scan correction technique for atmospheric CO_2, which allows for the improved det… ▽ More

Stable constant mean curvature hypersurfaces are area minimizing in small L^1 neighborhoods

On the isoperimetric problem in Euclidean space with density
Abstract: We study the isoperimetric problem for Euclidean space endowed with a continuous density. In dimension one, we characterize isoperimetric regions for a unimodal density. In higher dimensions, we prove existence results and we derive stability conditions, which lead to the conjecture that for a radial log-convex density, balls about the origin are isoperimetric regions. Finally, we prove this con… ▽ More

Regularity of area-minimizing surfaces in 3D polytopes and of invariant hypersurfaces in R^n
Abstract: In (the surface of) a convex polytope P^3 in R^4, an area-minimizing surface avoids the vertices of P and crosses the edges orthogonally. In a smooth Riemannian manifold M with a group of isometries G, an area-minimizing G-invariant oriented hypersurface is smooth (except for a very small singular set in high dimensions).
