Emotion understanding is a complex process that involves multiple components. The ability to recognise emotions not only leads to new context awareness methods but also enhances system interaction's effectiveness by perceiving and expressing emotions. Despite the attention to discrete and dimensional models, neuroscientific evidence supports those emotions as being complex and multi-faceted. One framework that resonated well with such findings is the Component Process Model (CPM), a theory that considers the complexity of emotions with five interconnected components: appraisal, expression, motivation, physiology and feeling. However, the relationship between CPM and discrete emotions has not yet been fully explored. Therefore, to better understand emotions underlying processes, we operationalised a data-driven approach using interactive Virtual Reality (VR) games and collected multimodal measures (self-reports, physiological and facial signals) from 39 participants. We used Machine Learning (ML) methods to identify the unique contributions of each component to emotion differentiation. Our results showed the role of different components in emotion differentiation, with the model including all components demonstrating the most significant contribution. Moreover, we found that at least five dimensions are needed to represent the variation of emotions in our dataset. These findings also have implications for using VR environments in emotion research and highlight the role of physiological signals in emotion recognition within such environments.

Self-supervised learning offers an efficient way of extracting rich representations from various types of unlabeled data while avoiding the cost of annotating large-scale datasets. This is achievable by designing a pretext task to form pseudo labels with respect to the modality and domain of the data. Given the evolving applications of online handwritten texts, in this study, we propose the novel Part of Stroke Masking (POSM) as a pretext task for pretraining models to extract informative representations from the online handwriting of individuals in English and Chinese languages, along with two suggested pipelines for fine-tuning the pretrained models. To evaluate the quality of the extracted representations, we use both intrinsic and extrinsic evaluation methods. The pretrained models are fine-tuned to achieve state-of-the-art results in tasks such as writer identification, gender classification, and handedness classification, also highlighting the superiority of utilizing the pretrained models over the models trained from scratch.

Embodied agents, in the form of virtual agents or social robots, are rapidly becoming more widespread. In human-human interactions, humans use nonverbal behaviours to convey their attitudes, feelings, and intentions. Therefore, this capability is also required for embodied agents in order to enhance the quality and effectiveness of their interactions with humans. In this paper, we propose a novel framework that can generate sequences of joint angles from the speech text and speech audio utterances. Based on a conditional Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), our proposed neural network model learns the relationships between the co-speech gestures and both semantic and acoustic features from the speech input. In order to train our neural network model, we employ a public dataset containing co-speech gestures with corresponding speech audio utterances, which were captured from a single male native English speaker. The results from both objective and subjective evaluations demonstrate the efficacy of our gesture-generation framework for Robots and Embodied Agents.

However, selecting and validating appropriate materials that evoke a range of emotions is challenging. Here we present EmoStim: A Database of Emotional Film Clips as a film library with a rich and varied content. EmoStim is designed for researchers interested in studying emotions in relation to either discrete or componential models of emotion. To create the database, 139 film clips were selected from literature and then annotated by 638 participants through the CrowdFlower platform. We selected 99 film clips based on the distribution of subjective ratings that effectively distinguished between emotions defined by the discrete model. We show that the selected film clips reliably induce a range of specific emotions according to the discrete model. Further, we describe relationships between emotions, emotion organization in the componential space, and underlying dimensions representing emotional experience. The EmoStim database and participant annotations are freely available for research purposes. The database can be used to enrich our understanding of emotions further and serve as a guide to select or create additional materials.

The continuous enhancement in the quality of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC), including but not limited to images and text, is forging new paradigms for its application, particularly within the domain of Augmented Reality (AR). Nevertheless, the application of GenAI within the AR design process remains opaque. This paper aims to articulate a design space encapsulating a series of criteria and a prototypical process to aid practitioners in assessing the aptness of adopting pertinent technologies. The proposed model has been formulated based on a synthesis of design insights garnered from ten experts, obtained through focus group interviews. A novel framework is proposed for handling the complex task of modelling and analysis of longitudinal, multivariate, heterogeneous clinical data. This method uses temporal abstraction to convert the data into a more appropriate form for modelling, temporal pattern mining, to discover patterns in the complex, longitudinal data and machine learning models of survival analysis to select the discovered patterns. The method is applied to a real-world study of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that has no cure. The patterns discovered were predictive of AD in survival analysis models with a Concordance index of up to 0.8. This is the first work that performs survival analysis of AD data using temporal data collections for AD. A visualisation module also provides a clear picture of the discovered patterns for ease of interpretability.

Based on the phenomenological extension of Darcy's law, two-fluid flow is dependent on a relative permeability function of saturation only that is process/path dependent with an underlying dependency on pore structure. For applications, fuel cells to underground $CO_2$ storage, it is imperative to determine the effective phase permeability relationships where the traditional approach is based on the inverse modelling of time-consuming experiments. The underlying reason is that the fundamental upscaling step from pore to Darcy scale, which links the pore structure of the porous medium to the continuum hydraulic conductivities, is not solved. Herein, we develop an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that relies on fundamental geometrical relationships to determine the mechanical energy dissipation during creeping immiscible two-fluid flow. The developed ANN is based on a prescribed set of state variables based on physical insights that predicts the effective permeability of 4,500 unseen pore-scale geometrical states with $R^2 = 0.98$.

Healthcare datasets often contain groups of highly correlated features, such as features from the same biological system. When feature selection is applied to these datasets to identify the most important features, the biases inherent in some multivariate feature selectors due to correlated features make it difficult for these methods to distinguish between the important and irrelevant features and the results of the feature selection process can be unstable. Feature selection ensembles, which aggregate the results of multiple individual base feature selectors, have been investigated as a means of stabilising feature selection results, but do not address the problem of correlated features. We present a novel framework to create feature selection ensembles from multivariate feature selectors while taking into account the biases produced by groups of correlated features, using agglomerative hierarchical clustering in a pre-processing step. These methods were applied to two real-world datasets from studies of Alzheimer's disease (AD), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that has no cure and is not yet fully understood. Our results show a marked improvement in the stability of features selected over the models without clustering, and the features selected by these models are in keeping with the findings in the AD literature.

Healthcare datasets present many challenges to both machine learning and statistics as their data are typically heterogeneous, censored, high-dimensional and have missing information. Feature selection is often used to identify the important features but can produce unstable results when applied to high-dimensional data, selecting a different set of features on each iteration.
The stability of feature selection can be improved with the use of feature selection ensembles, which aggregate the results of multiple base feature selectors. A threshold must be applied to the final aggregated feature set to separate the relevant features from the redundant ones. A fixed threshold, which is typically applied, offers no guarantee that the final set of selected features contains only relevant features. This work develops several data-driven thresholds to automatically identify the relevant features in an ensemble feature selector and evaluates their predictive accuracy and stability.
To demonstrate the applicability of these methods to clinical data, they are applied to data from two real-world Alzheimer's disease (AD) studies. AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disease with no known cure, that begins at least 2-3 decades before overt symptoms appear, presenting an opportunity for researchers to identify early biomarkers that might identify patients at risk of developing AD. Features identified by applying these methods to both datasets reflect current findings in the AD literature.

Understanding 3D point cloud models for learning purposes has become an imperative challenge for real-world identification such as autonomous driving systems. A wide variety of solutions using deep learning have been proposed for point cloud segmentation, object detection, and classification. These methods, however, often require a considerable number of model parameters and are computationally expensive. We study a semantic dimension of given 3D data points and propose an efficient method called Meta-Semantic Learning (Meta-SeL). Meta-SeL is an integrated framework that leverages two input 3D local points (input 3D models and part-segmentation labels), providing a time and cost-efficient, and precise projection model for a number of 3D recognition tasks. The results indicate that Meta-SeL yields competitive performance in comparison with other complex state-of-the-art work. Hyperparameter tuning in machine learning algorithms is a computationally challenging task due to the large-scale nature of the problem. In order to develop an efficient strategy for hyper-parameter tuning, one promising solution is to use swarm intelligence algorithms. Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) optimization lends itself as a promising and efficient optimization algorithm for this purpose. However, in some cases, ABC can suffer from a slow convergence rate or execution time due to the poor initial population of solutions and expensive objective functions. To address these concerns, a novel algorithm, OptABC, is proposed to help ABC algorithm in faster convergence toward a near-optimum solution. OptABC integrates artificial bee colony algorithm, K-Means clustering, greedy algorithm, and opposition-based learning strategy for tuning the hyper-parameters of different machine learning models. OptABC employs these techniques in an attempt to diversify the initial population, and hence enhance the convergence ability without significantly decreasing the accuracy. In order to validate the performance of the proposed method, we compare the results with previous state-of-the-art approaches. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the OptABC compared to existing approaches in the literature.

Emotions are multifaceted phenomena that affect our behaviour, perception, and cognition. Increasing evidence indicates that induction mechanisms play a crucial role in triggering emotions by simulating the sensations required for an experimental design. Over the years, many reviews have evaluated a passive elicitation mechanism where the user is an observer, ignoring the importance of self-relevance in emotional experience. So, in response to the gap in the literature, this study intends to explore the possibility of using Virtual Reality (VR) as an active mechanism for emotion induction. Furthermore, for the success and quality of research settings, VR must select the appropriate material to effectively evoke emotions. Therefore, in the present review, we evaluated to what extent VR visual and audio-visual stimuli, games, and tasks, and 360-degree panoramas and videos can elicit emotions based on the current literature. Further, we present public datasets generated by VR and emotion-sensing interfaces that can be used in VR based research. The conclusions of this survey reveal that VR has a great potential to evoke emotions effectively and naturally by generating motivational and empathy mechanisms which makes it an ecologically valid paradigm to study emotions.

The explosion of advancements in artificial intelligence, sensor technologies, and wireless communication activates ubiquitous sensing through distributed sensors. These sensors are various domains of networks that lead us to smart systems in healthcare, transportation, environment, and other relevant branches/networks. Having collaborative interaction among the smart systems connects end-user devices to each other which enables achieving a new integrated entity called Smart Cities. The goal of this study is to provide a comprehensive survey of data analytics in smart cities. In this paper, we aim to focus on one of the smart cities important branches, namely Smart Mobility, and its positive ample impact on the smart cities decision-making process. Intelligent decision-making systems in smart mobility offer many advantages such as saving energy, relaying city traffic, and more importantly, reducing air pollution by offering real-time useful information and imperative knowledge. Making a decision in smart cities in time is challenging due to various and high dimensional factors and parameters, which are not frequently collected. In this paper, we first address current challenges in smart cities and provide an overview of potential solutions to these challenges. Then, we offer a framework of these solutions, called universal smart cities decision making, with three main sections of data capturing, data analysis, and decision making to optimize the smart mobility within smart cities. With this framework, we elaborate on fundamental concepts of big data, machine learning, and deep leaning algorithms that have been applied to smart cities and discuss the role of these algorithms in decision making for smart mobility in smart cities.

Machine learning techniques lend themselves as promising decision-making and analytic tools in a wide range of applications. Different ML algorithms have various hyper-parameters. In order to tailor an ML model towards a specific application, a large number of hyper-parameters should be tuned. Tuning the hyper-parameters directly affects the performance (accuracy and run-time). However, for large-scale search spaces, efficiently exploring the ample number of combinations of hyper-parameters is computationally challenging. Existing automated hyper-parameter tuning techniques suffer from high time complexity. In this paper, we propose HyP-ABC, an automatic innovative hybrid hyper-parameter optimization algorithm using the modified artificial bee colony approach, to measure the classification accuracy of three ML algorithms, namely random forest, extreme gradient boosting, and support vector machine. Compared to the state-of-the-art techniques, HyP-ABC is more efficient and has a limited number of parameters to be tuned, making it worthwhile for real-world hyper-parameter optimization problems. We further compare our proposed HyP-ABC algorithm with state-of-the-art techniques. In order to ensure the robustness of the proposed method, the algorithm takes a wide range of feasible hyper-parameter values, and is tested using a real-world educational dataset.

A smart city can be seen as a framework, comprised of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). An intelligent network of connected devices that collect data with their sensors and transmit them using cloud technologies in order to communicate with other assets in the ecosystem plays a pivotal role in this framework. Maximizing the quality of life of citizens, making better use of resources, cutting costs, and improving sustainability are the ultimate goals that a smart city is after. Hence, data collected from connected devices will continuously get thoroughly analyzed to gain better insights into the services that are being offered across the city; with this goal in mind that they can be used to make the whole system more efficient. Robots and physical machines are inseparable parts of a smart city. Embodied AI is the field of study that takes a deeper look into these and explores how they can fit into real-world environments. It focuses on learning through interaction with the surrounding environment, as opposed to Internet AI which tries to learn from static datasets. Embodied AI aims to train an agent that can See (Computer Vision), Talk (NLP), Navigate and Interact with its environment (Reinforcement Learning), and Reason (General Intelligence), all at the same time. Autonomous driving cars and personal companions are some of the examples that benefit from Embodied AI nowadays. In this paper, we attempt to do a concise review of this field. We will go through its definitions, its characteristics, and its current achievements along with different algorithms, approaches, and solutions that are being used in different components of it (e.g. Vision, NLP, RL). We will then explore all the available simulators and 3D interactable databases that will make the research in this area feasible. Finally, we will address its challenges and identify its potentials for future research.

Medical Imaging is one of the growing fields in the world of computer vision. In this study, we aim to address the Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) problem as one of the open challenges in medical imaging. In this research, we propose a new lesion detection architecture, comprising of two sub-modules, which is an optimal solution to detect and find not only the type of lesions caused by DR, their corresponding bounding boxes, and their masks; but also the severity level of the overall case. Aside from traditional accuracy, we also use two popular evaluation criteria to evaluate the outputs of our models, which are intersection over union (IOU) and mean average precision (mAP). We hypothesize that this new solution enables specialists to detect lesions with high confidence and estimate the severity of the damage with high accuracy.

Machine learning is a powerful method for modeling in different fields such as education. Its capability to accurately predict students' success makes it an ideal tool for decision-making tasks related to higher education. The accuracy of machine learning models depends on selecting the proper hyper-parameters. However, it is not an easy task because it requires time and expertise to tune the hyper-parameters to fit the machine learning model. In this paper, we examine the effectiveness of automated hyper-parameter tuning techniques to the realm of students' success. Therefore, we develop two automated Hyper-Parameter Optimization methods, namely grid search and random search, to assess and improve a previous study's performance. The experiment results show that applying random search and grid search on machine learning algorithms improves accuracy. We empirically show automated methods' superiority on real-world educational data (MIDFIELD) for tuning HPs of conventional machine learning classifiers. This work emphasizes the effectiveness of automated hyper-parameter optimization while applying machine learning in the education field to aid faculties, directors', or non-expert users' decisions to improve students' success.

Malware detection has become a challenging task due to the increase in the number of malware families. Universal malware detection algorithms that can detect all the malware families are needed to make the whole process feasible. However, the more universal an algorithm is, the higher number of feature dimensions it needs to work with, and that inevitably causes the emerging problem of Curse of Dimensionality (CoD). Besides, it is also difficult to make this solution work due to the real-time behavior of malware analysis. In this paper, we address this problem and aim to propose a feature selection based malware detection algorithm using an evolutionary algorithm that is referred to as Artificial Bee Colony (ABC). The proposed algorithm enables researchers to decrease the feature dimension and as a result, boost the process of malware detection. The experimental results reveal that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art.

With the increasing interest in the content creation field in multiple sectors such as media, education, and entertainment, there is an increasing trend in the papers that uses AI algorithms to generate content such as images, videos, audio, and text. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) in one of the promising models that synthesizes data samples that are similar to real data samples. While the variations of GANs models, in general, have been covered to some extent in several survey papers, to the best of our knowledge, this is among the first survey papers that reviews the state-of-the-art video GANs models. This paper first categorized GANs review papers into general GANs review papers, image GANs review papers, and special field GANs review papers such as anomaly detection, medical imaging, or cybersecurity. The paper then summarizes the main improvements in GANs frameworks that are not initially developed for the video domain but have been adopted in multiple video GANs variations. Then, a comprehensive review of video GANs models is provided under two main divisions according to the presence or non-presence of a condition. The conditional models then further grouped according to the type of condition into audio, text, video, and image. The paper is concluded by highlighting the main challenges and limitations of the current video GANs models. A comprehensive list of datasets, applied loss functions, and evaluation metrics is provided in the supplementary material.

Emotions are an inseparable part of human nature affecting our behavior in response to the outside world. Although most empirical studies have been dominated by two theoretical models including discrete categories of emotion and dichotomous dimensions, results from neuroscience approaches suggest a multi-processes mechanism underpinning emotional experience with a large overlap across different emotions. While these findings are consistent with the influential theories of emotion in psychology that emphasize a role for multiple component processes to generate emotion episodes, few studies have systematically investigated the relationship between discrete emotions and a full componential view. This paper applies a componential framework with a data-driven approach to characterize emotional experiences evoked during movie watching. The results suggest that differences between various emotions can be captured by a few (at least 6) latent dimensions, each defined by features associated with component processes, including appraisal, expression, physiology, motivation, and feeling. In addition, the link between discrete emotions and component model is explored and results show that a componential model with a limited number of descriptors is still able to predict the level of experienced discrete emotion(s) to a satisfactory level. Finally, as appraisals may vary according to individual dispositions and biases, we also study the relationship between personality traits and emotions in our computational framework and show that the role of personality on discrete emotion differences can be better justified using the component model.

For recognizing speakers in video streams, significant research studies have been made to obtain a rich machine learning model by extracting high-level speaker's features such as facial expression, emotion, and gender. However, generating such a model is not feasible by using only single modality feature extractors that exploit either audio signals or image frames, extracted from video streams. In this paper, we address this problem from a different perspective and propose an unprecedented multimodality data fusion framework called DeepMSRF, Deep Multimodal Speaker Recognition with Feature selection. We execute DeepMSRF by feeding features of the two modalities, namely speakers' audios and face images. DeepMSRF uses a two-stream VGGNET to train on both modalities to reach a comprehensive model capable of accurately recognizing the speaker's identity. We apply DeepMSRF on a subset of VoxCeleb2 dataset with its metadata merged with VGGFace2 dataset. The goal of DeepMSRF is to identify the gender of the speaker first, and further to recognize his or her name for any given video stream. The experimental results illustrate that DeepMSRF outperforms single modality speaker recognition methods with at least 3 percent accuracy.

We theoretically explore the RKKY interaction mediated by spin-3/2 quasiparticles in half-Heusler topological semimetals in quasi-two-dimensional geometries. We find that while the Kohn-Luttinger terms gives rise to generalized Heisenberg coupling of the form ${\cal H}_{\rm RKKY} \propto σ_{1,i} {\cal I}_{ij} σ_{2,j}$ with a symmetric matrix ${\cal I}_{ij}$, addition of small antisymmetric linear spin-orbit coupling term leads to Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) coupling with an antisymmetric matrix ${\cal I}'_{ij}$. We demonstrate that besides the oscillatory dependence on the distance, all coupling strengths strongly depend on the relative orientation of the two impurities with respect to the lattice. This yields a strongly anisotropic behavior for ${\cal I}_{ij}$ such that by only rotating one impurity around another at a constant distance, we can see further oscillations of the RKKY couplings. This unprecedented effect is unique to our system which combines spin-orbit coupling with strongly anisotropic Fermi surfaces. We further find that all of the RKKY terms have two common features: a tetragonal warping in their map of spatial variations, and a complex beating pattern. Intriguingly, all these features survive in all dopings and we see them in both electron- and hole-doped cases. In addition, due to the lower dimensionality combined with the effects of different spin-orbit couplings, we see that only one symmetric off-diagonal term, ${\cal I}_{xy}$ and two DM components ${\cal I}'_{xz}$ and ${\cal I}'_{yz}$ are nonvanishing, while the remaining three off-diagonal components are identically zero. This manifests another drastic difference of RKKY interaction in half-Heusler topological semimetals compared to the electronic systems with spin-1/2 effective description.

In [1, 2], we have explored the theoretical aspects of feature extraction optimization processes for solving largescale problems and overcoming machine learning limitations. Majority of optimization algorithms that have been introduced in [1, 2] guarantee the optimal performance of supervised learning, given offline and discrete data, to deal with curse of dimensionality (CoD) problem. These algorithms, however, are not tailored for solving emerging learning problems. One of the important issues caused by online data is lack of sufficient samples per class. Further, traditional machine learning algorithms cannot achieve accurate training based on limited distributed data, as data has proliferated and dispersed significantly. Machine learning employs a strict model or embedded engine to train and predict which still fails to learn unseen classes and sufficiently use online data. In this chapter, we introduce these challenges elaborately. We further investigate Meta-Learning (MTL) algorithm, and their application and promises to solve the emerging problems by answering how autonomous agents can learn to learn?.

In [1], we have explored the theoretical aspects of feature selection and evolutionary algorithms. In this chapter, we focus on optimization algorithms for enhancing data analytic process, i.e., we propose to explore applications of nature-inspired algorithms in data science. Feature selection optimization is a hybrid approach leveraging feature selection techniques and evolutionary algorithms process to optimize the selected features. Prior works solve this problem iteratively to converge to an optimal feature subset. Feature selection optimization is a non-specific domain approach. Data scientists mainly attempt to find an advanced way to analyze data n with high computational efficiency and low time complexity, leading to efficient data analytics. Thus, by increasing generated/measured/sensed data from various sources, analysis, manipulation and illustration of data grow exponentially. Due to the large scale data sets, Curse of dimensionality (CoD) is one of the NP-hard problems in data science. Hence, several efforts have been focused on leveraging evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to address the complex issues in large scale data analytics problems. Dimension reduction, together with EAs, lends itself to solve CoD and solve complex problems, in terms of time complexity, efficiently. In this chapter, we first provide a brief overview of previous studies that focused on solving CoD using feature extraction optimization process. We then discuss practical examples of research studies are successfully tackled some application domains, such as image processing, sentiment analysis, network traffics / anomalies analysis, credit score analysis and other benchmark functions/data sets analysis.

A large number of engineering, science and computational problems have yet to be solved in a computationally efficient way. One of the emerging challenges is how evolving technologies grow towards autonomy and intelligent decision making. This leads to collection of large amounts of data from various sensing and measurement technologies, e.g., cameras, smart phones, health sensors, smart electricity meters, and environment sensors. Hence, it is imperative to develop efficient algorithms for generation, analysis, classification, and illustration of data. Meanwhile, data is structured purposefully through different representations, such as large-scale networks and graphs. We focus on data science as a crucial area, specifically focusing on a curse of dimensionality (CoD) which is due to the large amount of generated/sensed/collected data. This motivates researchers to think about optimization and to apply nature-inspired algorithms, such as evolutionary algorithms (EAs) to solve optimization problems. Although these algorithms look un-deterministic, they are robust enough to reach an optimal solution. Researchers do not adopt evolutionary algorithms unless they face a problem which is suffering from placement in local optimal solution, rather than global optimal solution. In this chapter, we first develop a clear and formal definition of the CoD problem, next we focus on feature extraction techniques and categories, then we provide a general overview of meta-heuristic algorithms, its terminology, and desirable properties of evolutionary algorithms.

Steganography algorithms facilitate communication between a source and a destination in a secret manner. This is done by embedding messages/text/data into images without impacting the appearance of the resultant images/videos. Steganalysis is the science of determining if an image has secret messages embedded/hidden in it. Because there are numerous steganography algorithms, and since each one of them requires a different type of steganalysis, the steganalysis process is extremely challenging. Thus, researchers aim to develop one universal steganalysis to detect all known and unknown steganography algorithms, ideally in real-time. Universal steganalysis extracts a large number of features to distinguish stego images from cover images. However, the increase in features leads to the problem of the curse of dimensionality (CoD), which is considered to be an NP-hard problem. This COD problem additionally makes real-time steganalysis hard. A large number of features generates large datasets for which machine learning cannot generate an optimal model. Generating a machine learning based model also takes a long time which makes real-time processing appear impossible in any optimization for time-intensive fields such as visual computing. Possible solutions for CoD are deep learning and evolutionary algorithms that overcome the machine learning limitations. In this study, we investigate previously developed evolutionary algorithms for boosting real-time image processing and argue that they provide the most promising solutions for the CoD problem.
