We identify Narain conformal field theories (CFTs) that correspond to code lattices for quantum error-correcting codes (QECC) over integers of cyclotomic fields $Q(ζ_p)$ $(ζ_p=e^{\frac{2πi}p})$ for general prime $p\geq 3$. This code-lattice construction is a generalization of more familiar ones such as Construction A${}_C$ for ternary codes and (after the generalization stated below) Construction A for binary codes, containing them as special cases. This code-lattice construction is redescribed in terms of root and weight lattices of Lie algebras, which allows to construct lattices for codes over rings $Z_q$ with non-prime $q$. Corresponding Narain CFTs are found for codes embedded into quotient rings of root and weight lattices of $ADE$ series, except $E_8$ and $D_k$ with $k$ even. In a sense, this provides a unified description of the relationship between various QECCs over $F_p$ (or $Z_q$) and Narain CFTs.

We investigate the geometrical structure of multiply enhanced codimension-two singularities in the $SU(5)$ model of six-dimensional F-theory, where the rank of the singularity increases by two or more. We perform blow-up processes for the enhancement $SU(5)\rightarrow G'$, where $G'=E_6$, $E_7$ or $E_8$, to examine whether a sufficient set of exceptional curves emerge that can explain the charged matter generation predicted from anomaly cancelation. We first apply one of the six Esole-Yau small resolutions to the multiply enhanced singularities, but it turns out that the proper transform of the threefold equation does not reflect changes in the singularity or how the generic codimension-two singularities gather there. We then use a(n) (apparently) different way of small resolutions than Esole-Yau to find that, except for the cases of $G'= E_6$ and special cases of $E_7$, either (1) the resolution only yields exceptional curves that are insufficient to cancel the anomaly, or (2) there arises a type of singularity that is neither a conifold nor a generalized conifold singularity. Finally, we revisit the Esole-Yau small resolution and show that the change of the way of small resolutions amounts to simply exchanging the proper transform and the constraint condition, and under this exchange the two ways of small resolutions are completely equivalent.

We also demonstrate that the new method of calculating the SW prepotential developed here is useful by performing some explicit computations.

In the latter case, the gauge symmetry is reduced to a non-simply-laced Lie algebra due to monodromy. We show that this split/non-split transition is, except for a special class of models, a conifold transition from the resolved to the deformed side, associated with the conifold singularities emerging where the codimension-one singularity is enhanced to $D_{2k+2}$ $(k \geq 1)$ or $E_7$. We also examine how the previous proposal for the origin of non-local matter can be actually implemented in our blow-up analysis.

In six-dimensional F-theory/heterotic string theory, half-hypermultiplets arise only when they correspond to particular quaternionic Kähler symmetric spaces, which are mostly associated with the Freudenthal-Tits magic square. Motivated by the intriguing singularity structure previously found in such F-theory models with a gauge group $SU(6)$,$SO(12)$ or $E_7$, we investigate, as the final magical example, an F-theory on an elliptic fibration over a Hirzebruch surface of the non-split $I_6$ type, in which the unbroken gauge symmetry is supposed to be $Sp(3)$. We find significant qualitative differences between the previous F-theory models associated with the magic square and the present case. We argue that the relevant half-hypermultiplets arise at the $E_6$ points, where half-hypermultiplets ${\bf 20}$ of $SU(6)$ would have appeared in the split model. We also consider the problem on the non-local matter generation near the $D_6$ point. After stating what the problem is, we explain why this is so by using the recent result that a split/non-split transition can be regarded as a conifold transition.

We consider resolutions of codimension-two enhanced singularities from $SO(12)$ to $E_7$ and from $E_7$ to $E_8$ in six-dimensional F-theory, where a half-hypermultiplet arises for generic complex structures achieving them. The exceptional fibers at the enhanced point exhibit different structures depending on how the colliding 7-brane approaches the stack of gauge 7-branes, as previously observed by Morrison and Taylor in the case of the enhancement from $SU(6)$ to $E_6$. When the colliding brane approaches them as $O(s)$, where $s$ is the coordinate of the base space along the gauge 7-branes, the resolution process ends up with fewer exceptional fibers than naively expected from the Kodaira classification, with a non-Dynkin intersection matrix including half-integral intersection numbers. We confirm that the exceptional fibers at the enhanced point form extremal rays of the cone of the positive weights of the relevant pseudo-real representation, explaining why a half-hypermultiplet arises there. By altering the ordering of the singularities blown up in the process, we obtain, for both $SO(12)\rightarrow E_7$ and $E_7\rightarrow E_8$, the intersection diagram on every other row of the corresponding box graphs. We present detailed derivations of the intersection diagrams of the exceptional fibers at the singularity enhanced points by examining how an exceptional curve is lifted up on the chart arising due to the subsequent blowing-up process. When the colliding brane approaches the stack of branes as $O(s^2)$, we obtain additional conifold singularity at the enhanced point, which completes the full Dynkin diagram of the enhanced group as was found previously.

Recently we have developed a new way to keep track of non-localness among 7-branes in F-theory on an elliptic fibration over $P^1$ by drawing a triangulated "dessin" on the base. To further demonstrate the usefulness of this method, we provide three examples of its use. We first consider a deformation of the $I_0^*$ Kodaira fiber. With a dessin, we can immediately find out which pairs of 7-branes are (non-)local and compute their monodromies. We next identify the paths of string(-junction)s on the dessin by solving the mass geodesic equation. By numerically computing their total masses, we find that the Hanany-Witten effect has not occurred in this example. Finally, we consider the orientifold limit in the spectral cover/Higgs bundle approach. We observe the characteristic configuration presenting the cluster sub-structure of an O-plane found previously.

The Mordell-Weil lattices (MW lattices) associated to rational elliptic surfaces are classified into 74 types. Among them, there are cases in which the MW lattice is none of the weight lattices of simple Lie algebras or direct sums thereof. We study how such "non-Cartan MW lattices" are realized in the six-dimensional heterotic/F-theory compactifications. In this paper, we focus on non-Cartan MW lattices that are torsion free and whose associated singularity lattices are sublattices of $A_7$. For the heterotic string compactification, a non-Cartan MW lattice yields an instanton gauge group $H$ with one or more $U(1)$ group(s). We give a method for computing massless spectra via the index theorem and show that the $U(1)$ instanton number is limited to be a multiple of some particular non-one integer. On the F-theory side, we examine whether we can construct the corresponding threefold geometries, i.e., rational elliptic surface fibrations over $P^1$. Except for some cases, we obtain such geometries for specific distributions of instantons. All the spectrum derived from those geometries completely match with the heterotic results.

They are defined as the zero loci of the coefficient functions $f(z)$ and $g(z)$ of a Weierstrass equation. They are thought of as complex co-dimension one objects and correspond to the two kinds of critical points of a dessin d'enfant of Grothendieck. The $P^1$ base is divided into several cell regions bounded by some domain walls extending from these planes and D-branes, on which the imaginary part of the $J$-function vanishes. This amounts to drawing a dessin with a canonical triangulation. We show that the dessin provides a new way of keeping track of mutual non-localness among 7-branes without employing unphysical branch cuts or their base point. With the dessin we can see that weak- and strong-coupling regions coexist and are located across an $S$-wall from each other. We also present a simple method for computing a monodromy matrix for an arbitrary path by tracing the walls it goes through.

K3 surfaces become attractive K3 surfaces at these points. Either of the following two situations occurs at such special points: i) the Mordell-Weil rank of an elliptic K3 surface is enhanced, or ii) the gauge symmetry is enhanced. The first case i) is related to the appearance of a $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. In this note, we construct the moduli of K3 surfaces with $ADE$ types $E_7 D_{10}$ and $A_{17}$. It is now well known that the moduli space of a vector bundle for heterotic string compactifications to four dimensions is parameterized by a set of sections of a weighted projective space bundle of a particular kind, known as Looijenga's weighted projective space bundle. We show that the requisite weighted projective spaces and the Weierstrass equations describing the spectral covers for gauge groups E_N (N=4,...,8) and SU(n+1) (n=1,2,3) can be obtained systematically by a series of blowing-up procedures according to Tate's algorithm, thereby the sections of correct line bundles claimed to arise by Looijenga's theorem can be automatically obtained. They are nothing but the four-dimensional analogue of the set of independent polynomials in the six-dimensional F-theory parameterizing the complex structure, which is further confirmed in the constructions of D_4, A_5, D_6, E_3 and SU(2) x SU(2) bundles. We also explain why we can obtain them in this way by using the structure theorem of the Mordell-Weil lattice, which is also useful for understanding the relation between the singularity and the occurrence of chiral matter in F-theory.

It is shown that the generation of extra matter is consistent only if it is accompanied by simultaneous degenerations of loci of the leading polynomial of the discriminant so that the total number of chiral matter does not change. We detected negative superhumps in VW Hyi and indicated that the low number of normal outbursts in some supercycle can be interpreted as a result of the disk tilt. This finding, combined with the Kepler observation of V1504 Cyg and V344 Lyr, suggests that the disk tilt is responsible for modulating the outburst pattern in SU UMa-type dwarf novae. We also studied the deeply eclipsing WZ Sge-type dwarf nova MASTER OT J005740.99+443101.5 and found evidence of a sharp eclipse during the phase of early superhumps. The profile can be reproduced by a combination of the eclipse of the axisymmetric disk and the uneclipsed light source of early superhumps. This finding confirms the lack of evince of a greatly enhanced hot spot during the early stage of WZ Sge-type outburst. We detected growing (stage A) superhumps in MN Dra and give a suggestion that some of SU UMa-type dwarf novae situated near the critical condition of tidal instability may show long-lasting stage A superhumps. The large negative period derivatives reported in such systems can be understood a result of the combination of stage A and B superhumps. The WZ Sge-type dwarf novae AL Com and ASASSN-13ck showed a long-lasting (plateau-type) rebrightening. In the early phase of the rebrightening, both objects showed a precursor-like outburst, suggesting that the long-lasting rebrightening is triggered by a precursor outburst.

We propose a new geometric mechanism for naturally realizing unparallel three families of flavors in string theory, using the framework of F-theory. We consider a set of coalesced local 7-branes of a particular Kodaira singularity type and allow some of the branes to bend and separate from the rest, so that they meet only at an intersection point. Such a local configuration can preserve supersymmetry. Its matter spectrum is investigated by studying string junctions near the intersection, and shown to coincide, after an orbifold projection, with that of a supersymmetric coset sigma model whose target space is a homogeneous Kahler manifold associated with a corresponding painted Dynkin diagram. In particular, if one starts from the E7 singularity, one obtains the E7/(SU(5)xU(1)^3) model yielding precisely three generations with an unparallel family structure. Possible applications to string phenomenology are also discussed.

We carried out optical high-dispersion spectroscopic monitoring of the Be disk in a Be/X-ray binary A 0535+262/V725 Tau from 2009 to 2012, covering two giant outbursts and several normal outbursts. This monitoring was performed in order to investigate variabilities of the Be disk due to the interaction with the neutron star in recent X-ray active phase from 2008 to 2011. Such variabilities give a clue to uncleared detailed mechanism for very bright X-ray outbursts, which are unique to some Be/X-ray binaries with relatively wide and eccentric orbit. In the previous letter (Moritani et al. 2011), a brief overview of line profile variabilities around the 2009 giant outburst was given and the possibility of a warped Be disk was discussed. In this paper, a full analysis of the Halpha line profiles as well as other line profiles is carried out. A bright blue component, or blue "shoulder", showing up after periastron indicates the presence of a dense gas stream toward the neutron star, which is associated with observed outbursts. We re-analyze the Halpha line profiles before 2009 (down to 2005) in order to investigate the variability of the the disk structure in the innermost region, which seems to have detached from the Be star surface by 2008. A redshifted enhanced component is remarkable in all emission lines observed around the 2009 giant outburst, occasionally forming a triple peak. These features indicate that the Be disk was warped in X-ray active phase. We estimate the position of the warped region from fitting the radial velocity of the redshifted enhanced component of Halpha, and find that it was very close to the periastron when two giant outbursts in 2009 and 2011 and a bright normal outburst in 2010 March occurred. These facts strongly suggest that the warped Be disk triggered these giant outbursts.

Some of the supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on exceptional groups (E7 or E8) are known to yield almost minimal necessary content of matter fields for phenomenological model building, including three chiral families and a Higgs multiplet. We explore a possible realization of such a family unification in heterotic string theory, where the spontaneously broken symmetry that we focus on is the one associated with the change of global orientation of the spin bundle embedded in the gauge bundle, which cannot be ignored in the presence of a magnetic source of the B field. We show in a simple model that it indeed gives rise to chiral matter fields on the defect similarly to the domain-wall fermions, and compare the chiral zero mode spectrum with the sigma model. The setup is reduced to a system similar to that postulated in the orbifold GUT or the grand gauge-Higgs unification model, where the origin of Z2 identification is accounted for as arising from the bolt of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold.

We present optical ($B$, $V$, $R_{\rm c}$, $I_{\rm c}$ and $y$) and near infrared ($J$, $H$ and $K_{\rm s}$) photometric and spectroscopic observations of a classical nova V1280 Scorpii for five years from 2007 to 2011. Our photometric observations show a declining event in optical bands shortly after the maximum light which continues $\sim$ 250 days. The event is most probably caused by a dust formation. The event is accompanied by a short ($\sim$ 30 days) re-brightening episode ($\sim$ 2.5 mag in $V$), which suggests a re-ignition of the surface nuclear burning. After 2008, the $y$ band observations show a very long plateau at around $y$ = 10.5 for more than 1000 days until April 2011 ($\sim$ 1500 days after the maximum light). The nova had taken a very long time ($\sim$ 50 months) before entering the nebular phase (clear detection of both [\ion{O}{iii}] 4959 and 5007) and is still continuing to generate the wind caused by H-burning. The finding suggests that V1280 Sco is going through the historically slowest evolution. The interval from the maximum light (2007 February 16) to the beginning of the nebular phase is longer than any previously known slow novae: V723 Cas (18 months), RR Pic (10 months), or HR Del (8 months). It suggests that the mass of a white dwarf in the V1280 Sco system might be 0.6 $M_\mathrm{\sun}$ or smaller. The distance, based on our measurements of the expansion velocity combined with the directly measured size of the dust shell, is estimated to be 1.1 $\pm$ 0.5 kpc.

The dimensional reduction of the bosonic sector of five-dimensional minimal supergravity to a Lorentzian four-dimensional spacetime leads to a theory with a massless axion and a dilaton coupled to gravity and two U(1) gauge fields and the dimensionally reduced equations of motion have SL(2,R)/SO(2)-duality invariance. In our previous work, utilizing the duality invariance, we formulated solution-generation techniques within five-dimensional minimal supergravity. In this work, by choosing a timelike Killing vector, we consider dimensional reduction to a four-dimensional Euclidean space, in which the field equations have SL(2,R)/SO(1,1) invariance. In the timelike case, we develop a new duality transformation technique, while in the spacelike case we have done that in the previous work. As an example, by applying it to the Rasheed solutions, we obtain rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole solutions in five-dimensional minimal supergravity. In general, in contrast to the spacelike case, the resulting dimensionally reduced solution includes the so-called NUT parameter and therefore from a four-dimensional point of view, such a spacetime is not asymptotically flat. However, it is shown that in some special cases, it can describe ordinary Kaluza-Klein black holes.

The latter are regarded as representing the asymptotic form of the Atiyah-Hitchin metric. The periodic arrays of Taub-NUT centers have close parallels with ionic crystals, where the Gibbons-Hawking potential plays the role of the Coulomb static potential of the ions, and are similarly classified according to their space groups. After a periodic identification and a Z2 projection, the array is transformed by T-duality to a system of NS5-branes with the SU(2) structure, and a further standard embedding yields, though singular, a half-BPS heterotic 5-brane background with warped compact transverse dimensions. A discussion is given of the possibility of probing the singular geometry by two-dimensional gauge theories.

Subsequent observations carried out on 2009 June and July confirmed at least 11 distinct absorption components in both systems. Some components had deepened during the two months period while their HWHMs and wavelengths remained nearly constant. We suggest these high velocity components originate in cool clumpy gas clouds moving on the line of sight, produced in interactions between pre-existing cool circumstellar gas and high velocity gas ejected in the nova explosion. The optical region spectrum of V1280 Sco in 2009 is dominated by the continuum radiation and exhibits no forbidden line characterizing the nebular phase of typical novae. Permitted Fe II lines show doubly peaked emission profiles and some strong Fe II lines are accompanied by a blue shifted (about -255 km/s) absorption component. However, no high-velocity and narrow components corresponding to those of Na I could be detected in Fe II lines nor in the Balmer lines. The 255 km/s low velocity absorption component is most probably originating in the wind from the nova.

Based on the string partition functions on these internal Calabi-Yaus previously obtained by Eguchi and Sugawara, we construct new modular invariant, space-time supersymmetric partition functions for both type II and heterotic string theories, where the GSO projection is performed before the continuous and discrete state contributions are separated. We investigate in detail the massless spectra of the localized modes. In particular, we propose an interesting three generation model, in which each flavor is in the 27+1 representation of E6 and localized on a four-dimensional space-time residing at the tip of the cigar.

Such mid-plateau phases are observed in other two recurrent novae, U Sco and CI Aql, and are interpreted as a bright disk irradiated by the white dwarf. We have calculated theoretical light curves based on the optically thick wind theory and have reproduced the early decline, mid-plateau phase, and final decline. The final decline is identified with the end of steady hydrogen shell-burning, which turned out at about day 80. This turnoff date is consistent with the end of a supersoft X-ray phase observed with Swift. Our model suggests a white dwarf mass of 1.35 \pm 0.01 M_\sun, which indicates that RS Oph is a progenitor of Type Ia supernovae. We strongly recommend the y-filter observation of novae to detect both the presence of a disk and the hydrogen burning turnoff. Observational data of y magnitudes are provided here together with other multi-wavelength light curve data.

We first re-examine how the conformal and Lorentz anomalies appear in the D=4 and 6 Green-Schwarz superstrings in the semi-light-cone gauge in the framework of BRST quantization. We construct a set of BRST invariant Lorentz generators and show that they do not form a closed algebra, even cohomologically. We then turn to the construction of Lorentz generators in the D=4 and 6 double-spinor superstrings, and show that the Lorentz invariance is again anomalous. We also discuss the relation between the anomaly-free Lorentz generators in the lower-dimensional pure-spinor formalisms and that obtained in this paper.

The exact expressions are obtained for those emitting massless IIB supergravity fields up to sixth order in the light-cone superfield, in which the conjugate gravitino and conjugate two-form vertex operators are newly determined. We also provide a consistency check by computing the kinematical factor of a four-point graviton amplitude in a D-instanton background. We conjecture that the low-energy effective action of the IIB matrix model at large N is given by tree-level supergravity coupled to the vertex operators.

Abstract:
We report a coordinated multi-band photometry of the RS Oph 2006 outburst and highlight the emission line free y-band photometry that shows a mid-plateau phase at y ~ 10.2 mag from day 40 to day 75 after the discovery followed by a sharp drop of the final decline. Such mid-plateau phases are observed in other two recurrent novae, U Sco and CI Aql, and are interpreted as a bright disk irradiated…

We report a coordinated multi-band photometry of the RS Oph 2006 outburst and highlight the emission line free y-band photometry that shows a mid-plateau phase at y ~ 10.2 mag from day 40 to day 75 after the discovery followed by a sharp drop of the final decline. Such mid-plateau phases are observed in other two recurrent novae, U Sco and CI Aql, and are interpreted as a bright disk irradiated by the white dwarf. We have calculated theoretical light curves based on the optically thick wind theory and have reproduced the observed light curves including the mid-plateau phase and the final sharp decline. This final decline is identified with the end of steady hydrogen shell-burning, which turned out the day ~80. This turnoff date is consistent with the end of a supersoft X-ray phase observed with Swift. Our model suggests a white dwarf mass of 1.35 \pm 0.01 M_\sun, which indicates that RS Oph is a progenitor of Type Ia supernovae. We strongly recommend the y-filter observation of novae to detect both the presence of a disk and the hydrogen burning turn-off.

Abstract:
We study the zero-dimensional reduced model of D=6 pure super Yang-Mills theory and argue that the large N limit describes the (2,0) Little String Theory. The one-loop effective action shows that the force exerted between two diagonal blocks of matrices behaves as 1/r^4, implying a six-dimensional spacetime. The one-loop effective action shows that the force exerted between two diagonal blocks of matrices behaves as 1/r^4, implying a six-dimensional spacetime. We also observe that it is due to non-gravitational interactions. We construct wave functions and vertex operators which realize the D=6, (2,0) tensor representation. We also comment on other "little" analogues of the IIB matrix model and Matrix Theory with less supercharges.

In the flat background the set of nonlocal charges is the same before and after the T-duality transformation with interchanging odd and even-order charges. In the IIB pp-wave background an infinite number of nonlocal charges are independent, contrast to that in a flat background only the zero-th and first order charges are independent. In the IIA pp-wave background, which is the T-dualized compactified IIB pp-wave background, the zero-th order charges are included as a part of the set of nonlocal charges in the IIB background. To make this correspondence complete a variable conjugate to the winding number is introduced as a Lagrange multiplier in the IIB action a la Buscher's transformation.

The bosonic equations of motion and the Bianchi identity for D=5 pure supergravity match the equations of the level l<=3 truncation of the G2H sigma model up to higher level terms, just as they do for the D=11 case. We also compute low level root and outer multiplicities in the A3 decomposition, and indeed find singlets at l=4k, k=2,3,... corresponding to the scaling of ER^{k+1} terms, although the missing singlet at l =4 remains a puzzle.

This fact allows us to use all the techniques developed and results obtained in hermitian 1-matrix models to investigate unitary as well as other 1-matrix models with the Haar measure on the unitary group. We demonstrate the use of this duality in various examples, including: (1) an explicit confirmation that the unitary matrix formulation of the N=2 pure SU(2) gauge theory correctly reproduces the genus-1 topological string amplitude (2) derivations of the special geometry relations in unitary as well as the Chern-Simons matrix models.

We study the gravitational corrections to the F-term in four-dimensional N=1 U(N) gauge theories with flavors, using the Dijkgraaf-Vafa theory. We derive a compact formula for the annulus contribution in terms of the prime form on the matrix model curve. Remarkably, the full R^2 correction can be reproduced as a special momentum sector of a single c=1 CFT correlator, which closely resembles that in the bosonization of fermions on Riemann surfaces. The N=2 limit of the torus contribution agrees with the multi-instanton calculations as well as the topological A-model result. The planar contributions, on the other hand, have no counterpart in the topological gauge theories, and we speculate about the origin of these terms.

A hermitian one-matrix model with an even quartic potential exhibits a third-order phase transition when the cuts of the matrix model curve coalesce. We use the known solutions of this matrix model to compute effective superpotentials of an N=1, SU(N) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory coupled to an adjoint superfield, following the techniques developed by Dijkgraaf and Vafa. These solutions automatically satisfy the quantum tracelessness condition and describe a breaking to SU(N/2) x SU(N/2) x U(1). We show that the value of the effective superpotential is smooth at the transition point, and that the two-cut (broken) phase is more favored than the one-cut (unbroken) phase below the critical scale. The U(1) coupling constant diverges due to the massless monopole, thereby demonstrating Ferrari's general formula. We also briefly discuss the implication of the Painleve II equation arising in the double scaling limit.

Abstract:
We show, by direct computations of bosonic string spectra, the O(d,d;Z) (d=1,2) T-duality in the maximally supersymmetric IIB plane-wave background compactified on S^1 and T^2. Only half of the ordinary set of zero modes appear in the Hamiltonian. This "half" Narain lattice is proved to be stabilized by the T-duality group.

We discuss the Green-Schwarz action for type IIB strings in general plane-wave backgrounds obtained as Penrose limits from any IIB supergravity solutions with vanishing background fermions. Using the normal-coordinate expansion in superspace, we prove that the light-cone action is necessarily quadratic in the fermionic coordinates. This proof is valid for more general pp-wave backgrounds under certain conditions. We also write down the complete quadratic action for general bosonic on-shell backgrounds in a form in which its geometrical meaning is manifest both in the Einstein and string frames. When the dilaton and 1-form field strength are vanishing, and the other field strengths are constant, our string-frame action reduces, up to conventions, to the one which has been written down using the supercovariant derivative.
