In low temperature experiments, resins have many applications as glues or thermal and electrical insulators. Cyanate ester resins (CEs) are a high-temperature compatible thermoset resin whose glass-transition temperature $T_g$ is ~300 $^\circ$C. Recently, we found that CEs also withstand low temperatures without microcracking by measuring $^4$He permeability. Here, we measured specific heat C, thermal conductivity κ, and magnetic susceptibility $χ$ of different kinds of CEs in the wide temperature range from room temperature to 0.5 K for C and 2 K for other two. The thermal properties, C and κ, of different kinds of CEs are surprisingly coincident with each other. We discuss chemical structures and crystallinity of CEs and their blends based on the measured thermal properties. Compared to Stycast 1266, a commonly-used epoxy resin in low temperature experiments, C of CEs is larger by a factor of 3 (<= 30 K), κis lower by a factor of 4 (<= 10 K), indicating the small thermal diffusivity. The χvalues are as small as Stycast 1266, indicative of their high purity. Our results show that cyanate esters are a new option for cryogenic resins with thermal insulative properties in/for low temperature experiments.

Abstract:
We present the detection of a blackbody component in GRB 160107A emission by using the combined spectral data of the CALET Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (CGBM) and the MAXI Gas Slit Camera (GSC). The MAXI/GSC detected the emission $\sim$45 s prior to the main burst episode observed by the CGBM. The MAXI/GSC and the CGBM spectrum of this prior emission period is well fit by a blackbody with the temperature of $1.0^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ keV plus a power-law with the photon index of $-1.6 \pm 0.3$. We discuss the radius to the photospheric emission and the main burst emission based on the observational properties. We stress the importance of the coordinated observations via various instruments collecting the high quality data over a broad energy coverage in order to understand the GRB prompt emission mechanism.

We report on ac magnetic susceptibility measurements under pressure of the Au-Al-Yb alloy, a crystalline approximant to the icosahedral quasicrystal that shows unconventional quantum criticality. We report on ac magnetic susceptibility measurements under pressure of the Au-Al-Yb alloy, a crystalline approximant to the icosahedral quasicrystal that shows unconventional quantum criticality. In describing the susceptibility as $χ(T)^{-1} - χ(0)^{-1} \propto T^γ$, we find that $χ(0)^{-1}$ decreases with increasing pressure and vanishes to zero at the critical pressure $P_{\rm c} \simeq 2$ GPa, with $γ~ (\simeq 0.5)$ unchanged. We suggest that this quantum criticality emerges owing to critical valence fluctuations. Above $P_{\rm c}$, the approximant undergoes a magnetic transition at $T \simeq 100$ mK. These results are contrasted with the fact that, in the quasicrystal, the quantum criticality is robust against the application of pressure. The applicability of the so-called $T/H$ scaling to the approximant is also discussed.

This is the first observation of superconductivity in Tsai-type crystalline approximants of quasicrystals. The Tsai-type cluster center is occupied by Au and Ge ions in the former approximant, and by an Yb ion in the latter. For magnetism, the latter system shows a larger magnetization than the former. To explain this observation, we propose a model that the cluster-center Yb ion is magnetic. The relationship between the magnetism and the superconductivity is also discussed.

Very recently, however, the Tsai-type quasicrystal Au51Al34Yb15 has been reported to show unusual quantum critical behavior. To obtain a deeper understanding of this new material, we have searched for other Tsai-type cluster materials. Here, we report that the metal alloys Au44Ga41Yb15 and Ag47Ga38Yb15 are members of the 1/1 approximant to the Tsai-type quasicrystal and that both possess no localized magnetic moment. We suggest that the Au-Al-Yb system is located near the border of the divalent and trivalent states of the Yb ion; we also discuss a possible origin of the disappearance of magnetism, associated with the valence change, by the substitution of the constituent elements.

Quasicrystals are metallic alloys that possess long-range, aperiodic structures with diffraction symmetries forbidden to conventional crystals. Since the discovery of quasicrystals by Schechtman et al. at 1984 (ref. 1), there has been considerable progress in resolving their geometric structure. For example, it is well known that the golden ratio of mathematics and art occurs over and over again in their crystal structure. However, the characteristic properties of the electronic states - whether they are extended as in periodic crystals or localized as in amorphous materials - are still unresolved. Here we report the first observation of quantum (T = 0) critical phenomena of the Au-Al-Yb quasicrystal - the magnetic susceptibility and the electronic specific heat coefficient arising from strongly correlated 4f electrons of the Yb atoms diverge as T -> 0. Furthermore, we observe that this quantum critical phenomenon is robust against hydrostatic pressure. By contrast, there is no such divergence in a crystalline approximant, a phase whose composition is close to that of the quasicrystal and whose unit cell has atomic decorations (that is, icosahedral clusters of atoms) that look like the quasicrystal. These results clearly indicate that the quantum criticality is associated with the unique electronic state of the quasicrystal, that is, a spatially confined critical state. Finally we discuss the possibility that there is a general law underlying the conventional crystals and the quasicrystals.
