It is well-known that the two-dimensional Keller-Segel system admits finite time blowup solutions, which is the case if the initial density has a total mass greater than $8π$ and a finite second moment. Several constructive examples of such solutions have been obtained, where for all of them a perturbed stationary state undergoes scale instability and collapses at a point, resulting in a $8π$-mass concentration. It was conjectured that singular solutions concentrating simultaneously more than one solitons could exist. We construct rigorously such a new blowup mechanism, where two stationary states are simultaneously collapsing and colliding, resulting in a $16π$-mass concentration at a single blowup point, and with a new blowup rate which corresponds to the formal prediction by Seki, Sugiyama and Velázquez. We develop for the first time a robust framework to construct rigorously such blowup solutions involving simultaneously the non-radial collision and concentration of several solitons, which we expect to find applications to other evolution problems.

Abstract:
In this article, we prove that the threshold of instability of the classical Couette flow in $H^s$ for large $s$ is $ν^{1/2}$. The instability is completely driven by the boundary. The dynamic of the flow creates a Prandtl type boundary layer of width $ν^{1/2}$ which is itself linearly unstable. This leads to a secondary instability which in turn creates a sub-layer.

We consider the incompressible and stationary Stokes equations on an infinite two-dimensional wedge with non-scaling invariant Navier-slip boundary conditions. We prove well-posedness and higher regularity of the Stokes problem in a certain class of weighted Sobolev spaces.
The novelty of this work is the occurrence of two different scalings in the boundary condition, which is not treated so far for the Stokes system in unbounded wedge-type domains. These difficulties are overcome by first constructing a variational solution in a second order weighted Sobolev space and subsequently proving higher regularity up to the tip of the wedge by employing an iterative scheme. We believe that this method can be used for other problems with variational structure and multiple scales.

Far from equilibrium, chemical and biological systems can form complex patterns and waves through reaction-diffusion coupling. Fluid motion often tends to disrupt these self-organized concentration patterns. In this study, we investigate the influence of Marangoni-driven flows in a thin layer of fluid ascending the outer surfaces of hydrophilic obstacles on the spatio-temporal dynamics of chemical waves in the modified Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction. Our observations reveal that circular waves originate nearly simultaneously at the obstacles and propagate outward. In a covered setup, where evaporation is minimal, the wavefronts maintain their circular shape. However, in an uncovered setup with significant evaporative cooling, the interplay between surface tension-driven Marangoni flows and gravity destabilizes the wavefronts, creating distinctive flower-like patterns around the obstacles. Our experiments further show that the number of petals formed increases linearly with the obstacle's diameter, though a minimum diameter is required for these instabilities to appear. These findings demonstrate the potential to 'engineer' specific wave patterns, offering a method to control and direct reaction dynamics. This capability is especially important for developing microfluidic devices requiring precise control over chemical wave propagation.

Employing methodologies analogous to the Martel-Merle-Raphael blow-up theory for $L^2$ critical equations, more precisely for the critical NLS equation and the quintic generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation, we categorize the solution behaviors into three outcomes: asymptotic stability, finite-time blow-up, or divergence from the soliton's vicinity. The construction of the blow-up solution involves the bubbling of the solitary wave which ensures the universal behavior and stability of the blow-up.

The conjunction of edge intelligence and the ever-growing Internet-of-Things (IoT) network heralds a new era of collaborative machine learning, with federated learning (FL) emerging as the most prominent paradigm. With the growing interest in these learning schemes, researchers started addressing some of their most fundamental limitations. Indeed, conventional FL with a central aggregator presents a single point of failure and a network bottleneck. To bypass this issue, decentralized FL where nodes collaborate in a peer-to-peer network has been proposed. Despite the latter's efficiency, communication costs and data heterogeneity remain key challenges in decentralized FL. In this context, we propose a novel scheme, called opportunistic communication-efficient decentralized federated learning, a.k.a., OCD-FL, consisting of a systematic FL peer selection for collaboration, aiming to achieve maximum FL knowledge gain while reducing energy consumption. Experimental results demonstrate the capability of OCD-FL to achieve similar or better performances than the fully collaborative FL, while significantly reducing consumed energy by at least 30% and up to 80%.

The main goal of this paper is to explore the leapfrogging phenomenon in the inviscid planar flows. We show for 2d Euler equations that under suitable constraints, four concentrated vortex patches leapfrog for all time. When observed from a translating frame of reference, the evolution of these vortex patches can be described as a non-rigid time periodic motion. Our proof hinges upon two key components. First, we desingularize the symmetric four point vortex configuration, which leapfrogs in accordance with Love's result \cite{Love1893}, by concentrated vortex patches. Second, we borrow some tools from KAM theory to effectively tackle the small divisor problem and deal with the degeneracy in the time direction. Our approach is robust and flexible and solves a long-standing problem that has remained unresolved for many decades.

We investigate the existence and stability of small perturbations of constant states of the generalized Hughes model for pedestrian flow in an infinitely large corridor. We show that constant flows are stable under a condition on the density. Our findings indicates that when the density is less than half of the maximum density $ρ_{m}/2$, which is the Lasry-Lions monotonicity condition, we can control the perturbation and prove positive stability results for the nonlinear Generalized Hughes model. However, due to wave propagation phenomena, we are unable to provide an answer for stability results when the density is higher. Our approach involves constructing an explicit solution for the linear problem in Fourier analysis and demonstrating, through a fixed-point argument, how to construct the solution for the full nonlinear mean-field games system.

In this paper, we present a new generalized Hughes model designed to intelligently depict pedestrian congestion dynamics, allowing pedestrian groups to either navigate through or circumvent high-density regions. First, we describe the microscopic settings of the model. The corresponding optimization problems are deterministic and can be formulated by a closed-loop model predictive control strategy. This microscopic setup leads in the mean-field limit to the Generalized Hughes model which is a class of non-separable mean field games system, i.e., Fokker-Planck equation and viscous Hamilton-Jacobi Bellman equation are coupled in a forward-backward structure. We give an overview on the mean field games in connection to our intelligent fluid model. Therefore, we show the existence of weak solutions to the Generalized Hughes model and analyze the vanishing viscosity limit of weak solutions. This paper is devoted to the diffusive limit of the nonlinear radiative heat transfer system with curved boundary domain (\textit{two dimensional disk}). The solution constructed in \cite{ghattassi2022convergence} by the leading order interior solution and the boundary layer corrections fails here to approximate the solutions in $L^\infty$ sense for the diffusive limit. The present paper aims to construct a geometric correction to the boundary layer problem and obtain a valid approximate solution in $L^\infty$ sense. The main tools to overcome the convergence problem, are to use matched asymptotic expansion techniques, fixed-point theorems, linear and nonlinear stability analysis of the boundary layer problem. In particular, the spectral assumption on the leading order interior solution, which was proposed for the flat case in \cite{Bounadrylayer2019GHM2}, is shown to be still valid which guarantee the stability of the boundary layer expansion with geometric corrections. Moreover, the convergence result established in \cite[Lemma 10]{ghattassi2022convergence} remain applicable for the approximate solution with geometric corrections.

A potent class of generative models known as Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DPMs) has become prominent. A forward diffusion process adds gradually noise to data, while a model learns to gradually denoise. Sampling from pre-trained DPMs is obtained by solving differential equations (DE) defined by the learnt model, a process which has shown to be prohibitively slow. Numerous efforts on speeding-up this process have consisted on crafting powerful ODE solvers. Despite being quick, such solvers do not usually reach the optimal quality achieved by available slow SDE solvers. Our goal is to propose SDE solvers that reach optimal quality without requiring several hundreds or thousands of NFEs to achieve that goal. We propose Stochastic Explicit Exponential Derivative-free Solvers (SEEDS), improving and generalizing Exponential Integrator approaches to the stochastic case on several frameworks. After carefully analyzing the formulation of exact solutions of diffusion SDEs, we craft SEEDS to analytically compute the linear part of such solutions. Inspired by the Exponential Time-Differencing method, SEEDS use a novel treatment of the stochastic components of solutions, enabling the analytical computation of their variance, and contains high-order terms allowing to reach optimal quality sampling $\sim3$-$5\times$ faster than previous SDE methods. We validate our approach on several image generation benchmarks, showing that SEEDS outperform or are competitive with previous SDE solvers. Contrary to the latter, SEEDS are derivative and training free, and we fully prove strong convergence guarantees for them.

The Tollmien-Schlichting (T-S) waves play a key role in the early stages of boundary layer transition. In a breakthrough work, Grenier, Guo and Nguyen gave the first rigorous construction of the T-S waves of temporal mode for the incompressible fluid. Yang and Zhang recently made an important contribution by constructing the compressible T-S waves of temporal mode for certain boundary layer profiles with Mach number $m<\frac{1}{\sqrt 3}$. In this paper, we construct the T-S waves of both temporal mode and spatial mode to the linearized compressible Navier-Stokes system around the boundary layer flow in the whole subsonic regime $m<1$, including the Blasius profile. Our approach is based on a novel iteration scheme between the quasi-incompressible and quasi-compressible systems, with a key ingredient being the solution of an Orr-Sommerfeld type equation using a new Airy-Airy-Rayleigh iteration instead of Rayleigh-Airy iteration introduced by Grenier, Guo and Nguyen. We believe the method developed in this work can be applied in solving other related problems for subsonic flows.

We prove the existence of steady \emph{space quasi-periodic} stream functions, solutions for the Euler equation in vorticity-stream function formulation in the two dimensional channel ${\mathbb R}\times [-1,1]$. These solutions bifurcate from a prescribed shear equilibrium near the Couette flow, whose profile induces finitely many modes of oscillations in the horizontal direction for the linearized problem. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme, near such equilibrium we construct small amplitude, space reversible stream functions slightly deforming the linear solutions and retaining the horizontal quasi-periodic structure. These solutions exist for most values of the parameters characterizing the shear equilibrium. As a by-product, the streamlines of the nonlinear flow exhibit Kelvin's cat eye-like trajectories arising from the finitely many stagnation lines of the shear equilibrium.

In this paper, we study the diffusive limit of the steady state radiative heat transfer system for non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in a bounded domain with flat boundaries. A composite approximate solution is constructed using asymptotic analysis taking into account of the boundary layers. The convergence to the approximate solution in the diffusive limit is proved using a Banach fixed point theorem. The major difficulty lies on the nonlinear coupling between elliptic and kinetic transport equations. To overcome this problem, a spectral assumption ensuring the linear stability of the boundary layers is proposed. Moreover, a combined $L^2$-$L^\infty$ estimate and the Banach fixed point theorem are used to obtain the convergence proof. This results extend our previous work \cite{ghattassi2020diffusive} for the well-prepared boundary data case to the ill-prepared case when boundary layer exists.

It's generally known the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Couette flow depends closely on the size and regularity of the initial perturbation, which yields the stability threshold problem. This work studies the relationship between the size and the regularity of the initial perturbation that makes the nonlinear asymptotic stability holds. More precisely, we proved that if the initial perturbation is in some Gevrey-$\frac{1}{s}$ class with size $εν^β$ where $s\geq \frac{1-3β}{2-3β}$ and $β\in [0,\frac{1}{3}]$, then the nonlinear asymptotic stability holds.

This paper focuses on the nonlinear Milne problem of the radiative heat transfer system on the half-space. The nonlinear model is described by a second order ODE for temperature coupled to transport equation for radiative intensity. The nonlinearity of the fourth power Stefan-Boltzmann law of black body radiation, bring additional difficulty in mathematical analysis, compared to the well-developed theory for Milne problem of linear transport equation. With the help of the monotonicity property of the second order ODE, we prove the existence of the nonlinear Milne problem on a finite interval using monotonic convergence theorems. Then the solution is extended to the half-space using a uniform weighted estimate and the compactness method. Moreover, the solutions are proved to converge to constants as $x\to \infty$. Therefore, the linear stability analysis is used to study the uniqueness of the nonlinear Milne problem. The existence and uniqueness for the linearized system is established under a spectral assumption on the solution of the nonlinear problem. The spectral assumption is shown to be satisfied when the boundary data is close to the well-prepared case by using a generalized Hardy's inequality. The uniqueness of the solution to the half-line nonlinear Milne problem is established in a neighborhood of solutions satisfying a spectral assumption and the energy estimate. The current work extends the study of Milne problem for linear transport equations and provides a comprehensive study on the nonlinear Milne problem of radiative heat transfer systems.

The classical point of view of regarding the system as an evolution in the tangential direction completely breaks down past the Goldstein singularity. Instead, to describe the development, we view the problem as a \textit{mixed-type, non-local, quasilinear, free-boundary} problem across the curve $\{ u = 0 \}$. In a well-chosen nonlinear and self-similar coordinate system, we extract a coupled system for the bulk solution and several modulation variables describing the free boundary. Our work combines and introduces techniques from mixed-type problems, free-boundary problems, modulation theory, harmonic analysis, and spectral theory. As a byproduct, we obtain several new cancellations in the Prandtl equations, and develop several new estimates tailored to singular integral operators with Airy type kernels.

We prove the existence of time quasi-periodic vortex patch solutions of the 2$d$-Euler equations in $\mathbb{R}^2$, close to uniformly rotating Kirchhoff elliptical vortices, with aspect ratios belonging to a set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure. The problem is reformulated into a quasi-linear Hamiltonian equation for a radial displacement from the ellipse. A major difficulty of the KAM proof is the presence of a zero normal mode frequency, which is due to the conservation of the angular momentum. The key novelty to overcome this degeneracy is to perform a perturbative symplectic reduction of the angular momentum, introducing it as a symplectic variable in the spirit of the Darboux-Carathéodory theorem of symplectic rectification, valid in finite dimension. This approach is particularly delicate in a infinite dimensional phase space: our symplectic change of variables is a nonlinear modification of the transport flow generated by the angular momentum itself. This is the first time such an idea is implemented in KAM for PDEs. Other difficulties are the lack of rotational symmetry of the equation and the presence of hyperbolic/elliptic normal modes. The latter difficulties -- as well as the degeneracy of a normal frequency -- are absent in other vortex patches problems which have been recently studied using the formulation introduced in this paper.

We consider the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system in three dimensions and higher, corresponding to the mass supercritical case. We construct rigorously a solution which blows up in finite time by having its mass concentrating near a ring that shrinks to a point. In particular, the singularity is of type II, non self-similar. We show the stability of this dynamics among spherically symmetric solutions. In renormalised variables, the solution ressembles a traveling wave imploding at the origin, and this, to our knowledge, is the first stability result for such phenomenon for an evolution PDE. We develop a framework to handle the interactions between the two blowup zones contributing to the mechanism: a thin inner zone around the ring where viscosity effects occur, and an outer zone where the evolution is mostly inviscid.

To cope with the current pandemic situation and reinstate pseudo-normal daily life, several measures have been deployed and maintained, such as mask wearing, social distancing, hands sanitizing, etc. Since outdoor cultural events, concerts, and picnics, are gradually allowed, a close monitoring of the crowd activity is needed to avoid undesired contact and disease transmission. In this context, intelligent unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be occasionally deployed to ensure the surveillance of these activities, that health restriction measures are applied, and to trigger alerts when the latter are not respected. Consequently, we propose in this paper a complete UAV framework for intelligent monitoring of post COVID-19 outdoor activities. Specifically, we propose a three steps approach. In the first step, captured images by a UAV are analyzed using machine learning to detect and locate individuals. The second step consists of a novel coordinates mapping approach to evaluate distances among individuals, then cluster them, while the third step provides an energy-efficient and/or reliable UAV trajectory to inspect clusters for restrictions violation such as mask wearing. Obtained results provide the following insights: 1) Efficient detection of individuals depends on the angle from which the image was captured, 2) coordinates mapping is very sensitive to the estimation error in individuals' bounding boxes, and 3) UAV trajectory design algorithm 2-Opt is recommended for practical real-time deployments due to its low-complexity and near-optimal performance.

To match the boundary layer effects due to the fast oscillations and the ill-prepared initial data assumption, we prove uniform estimates in an anisotropic functional framework with only one normal derivative close to the boundary. This allows to prove the local existence of a strong solution on a time interval independent of the Mach number and to justify the incompressible limit through a simple compactness argument.

The result demonstrates asymptotic stability in two senses simultaneously: (1) asymptotic as $ε\rightarrow 0$ and (2) asymptotic as $x \rightarrow \infty$. In particular, our result provides the first rigorous confirmation for the Navier-Stokes equations that the boundary layer cannot "separate" in these stable regimes, which is very important for physical and engineering applications.

We study the diffusive limit approximation for a nonlinear radiative heat transfer system that arises in the modeling of glass cooling, greenhouse effects and in astrophysics. The model is considered with the reflective radiative boundary conditions for the radiative intensity, and periodic, Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions for the temperature. The global existence of weak solutions for this system is given by using a Galerkin method with a careful treatment of the boundary conditions. Using the compactness method, averaging lemma and Young measure theory, we prove our main result that the weak solution converges to a nonlinear diffusion model in the diffusive limit. Moreover, under more regularity conditions on the limit system, the diffusive limit is also analyzed by using a relative entropy method. In particular, we get a rate of convergence. The initial and boundary conditions are assumed to be well-prepared in the sense that no initial and boundary layer exist.

In this paper we study the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation for localized disturbances of an infinite, homogeneous Maxwellian background distribution in $\mathbb R^3_x \times \mathbb R^3_v$. In contrast with the confined case $\mathbb T^d _x \times \mathbb R_v ^d$, or the unconfined case $\mathbb R^d_x \times \mathbb R^d_v$ with screening, the dynamics of the disturbance are not scattering towards free transport as $t \to \pm \infty$: we show that the electric field decomposes into a very weakly-damped Klein-Gordon-type evolution for long waves and a Landau-damped evolution. The Klein-Gordon-type waves solve, to leading order, the compressible Euler-Poisson equations linearized about a constant density state, despite the fact that our model is collisionless, i.e. there is no trend to local or global thermalization of the distribution function in strong topologies. We prove dispersive estimates on the Klein-Gordon part of the dynamics. The Landau damping part of the electric field decays faster than free transport at low frequencies and damps as in the confined case at high frequencies; in fact, it decays at the same rate as in the screened case. As such, neither contribution to the electric field behaves as in the vacuum case.

We construct solutions to the two dimensional parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel model for chemotaxis that blow up in finite time $T$. The solution is decomposed as the sum of a stationary state concentrated at scale $λ$ and of a perturbation. We rely on a detailed spectral analysis for the linearized dynamics in the parabolic neighbourhood of the singularity performed by the authors, providing a refined expansion of the perturbation. Our main result is the construction of a stable dynamics in the full nonradial setting for which the stationary state collapses with the universal law $λ\sim 2e^{-\frac{2+γ}{2}}\sqrt{T-t}e^{-\sqrt{\frac{|\ln (T-t)|}{2}}}$ where $γ$ is the Euler constant. This improves on the earlier result by Raphael and Schweyer 2014 and gives a new robust approach to so-called type II singularities for critical parabolic problems. A by-product of the spectral analysis we developed is the existence of unstable blowup dynamics with speed $λ_\ell \sim C_0(T-t)^{\frac{\ell}{2}} |\ln(T-t)|^{-\frac{\ell}{2(\ell - 1)}}$ for $\ell \geq 2$ integer.

We analyse an operator arising in the description of singular solutions to the two-dimensional Keller-Segel problem. It corresponds to the linearised operator in parabolic self-similar variables, close to a concentrated stationary state. This is a two-scale problem, with a vanishing thin transition zone near the origin. Via rigorous matched asymptotic expansions, we describe the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions precisely. We also show a stability result with respect to suitable perturbations, as well as a coercivity estimate for the non-radial part. These results are used as key arguments in a new rigorous proof of the existence and refined description of singular solutions for the Keller-Segel problem by the authors. The present paper extends the result by Dejak, Lushnikov, Yu, Ovchinnikov and Sigal [Physica D, 2012]. Two major difficulties arise in the analysis: this is a singular limit problem, and a degeneracy causes corrections not being polynomial but logarithmic with respect to the main parameter.

We consider the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbf{R}$, with initial vorticity that is $δ$ close in $H^{log}_xL^2_{y}$ to $-1$(the vorticity of the Couette flow $(y,0)$). We prove that if $δ\ll ν^{1/2}$, where $ν$ denotes the viscosity, then the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation approaches some shear flow which is also close to Couette flow for time $t\gg ν^{-1/3}$ by a mixing-enhanced dissipation effect and then converges back to Couette flow when $t\to +\infty$. In particular, we show the nonlinear enhanced dissipation and the inviscid damping results in the almost critical space $H^{log}_xL^2_{y}\subset L^2_{x,y}$.

Abstract:
We consider a family of non-local problems that model the effects of transport and vortex stretching in the incompressible Euler equations. Using modulation techniques, we establish stable self-similar blow-up near a family of known self-similar blow-up solutions.

Abstract:
We investigate the existence of ground state solutions of a Gross-Pitaevskii equation modeling the dynamics of pumped Bose Einstein condensates (BEC). The main interest in such BEC comes from its important nature as macroscopic quantum system, constituting an excellent alternative to the classical condensates which are hard to realize because of the very low temperature required. Nevertheless, the Gross Pitaevskii equation governing the new condensates presents some mathematical challenges due to the presence of the pumping and damping terms. Following a self-contained approach, we prove the existence of ground state solutions of this equation under suitable assumptions: This is equivalent to say that condensation occurs in these situations. We also solve the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and prove some corresponding laws.

We consider the inviscid unsteady Prandtl system in two dimensions, motivated by the fact that it should model to leading order separation and singularity formation for the original viscous system. We give a sharp expression for the maximal time of existence of regular solutions, showing that singularities only happen at the boundary or on the set of zero vorticity, and that they correspond to boundary layer separation. We then exhibit new Lagrangian formulae for backward self-similar profiles, and study them also with a different approach that was initiated by Elliott-Smith-Cowley and Cassel-Smith-Walker. One particular profile is at the heart of the so-called Van-Dommelen and Shen singularity, and we prove its generic appearance (that is, for an open and dense set of blow-up solutions) for any prescribed Eulerian outer flow. We comment on the connexion between these results and the full viscous Prandtl system. This paper combines ideas for transport equations, such as Lagrangian coordinates and incompressibility, and for singularity formation, such as self-similarity and renormalisation, in a novel manner, and designs a new way to study singularities for quasilinear transport equations.

Abstract:
We study existence of maximizer for the Trudinger-Moser inequality with general nonlinearity of the critical growth on $R^2$, as well as on the disk. We derive a very sharp threshold nonlinearity between the existence and the non-existence in each case, in asymptotic expansions with respect to growth and decay of the function. The expansions are explicit, using Apéry's constant. We also obtain an…
