We present an encoding and hardware-independent formulation of optimization problems for quantum computing. Using this generalized approach, we present an extensive library of optimization problems and their various derived spin encodings. Common building blocks that serve as a construction kit for building these spin Hamiltonians are identified. This paves the way towards a fully automatic construction of Hamiltonians for arbitrary discrete optimization problems. The presented freedom in the problem formulation is a key step for tailoring optimal spin Hamiltonians for different hardware platforms.

The vibrational quenching cross sections and corresponding low-temperature rate constants for the v = 1 and v = 2 states of CN- colliding with He and Ar atoms have been computed ab initio using new three dimensional potential energy surfaces. Little work has so far been carried out on low-energy vibrationally inelastic collisions for anions with neutral atoms. The cross sections and rates calculated at energies and temperatures relevant for both ion traps and astrochemical modelling, are found by the present calculations to be even smaller than those of the similar C2- /He and C2-/Ar systems which are in turn of the order of those existing for the collisions involving neutral diatom-atom systems. The implications of our finding in the present case rather small computed rate constants are discussed for their possible role in the dynamics of molecular cooling and in the evolution of astrochemical modelling networks.

The dicarbon molecular anion is currently of interest as a candidate for laser cooling due to its electronic structure and favorable branching ratios to the ground electronic and vibrational states. Helium has been proposed as a buffer gas to cool the molecule's internal motion. We calculate the cross sections and corresponding rates for rovibrational inelastic collisions of the dicarbon anion with He, and also with Ne and Ar, on three-dimensional ab initio potential energy surfaces using quantum scattering theory. The rates for vibrational quenching with He and Ne are very small and are similar to those for small neutral molecules in collision with helium. The quenching rates for Ar, however, are far larger than those with the other noble gases, suggesting that this may be a more suitable gas for driving vibrational quenching in traps. The implications of these results for laser cooling of the dicarbon anion are discussed.

We present an extensive range of quantum calculations for the state-changing rotational dynamics involving two simple molecular anions which are expected to play some role in evolutionary analysis of chemical networks in the Interstellar environments, C$_2$H$^-$($X^1Σ^+$) and C$_2$N$^-$ ($X^3 Σ^-$) but for which inelastic rates are only known for C$_2$H$^-$. The same systems are also of direct interest in modelling selective photo-detachment (PD) experiments in cold ion traps where the He atoms function as the chief buffer gas at the low trap temperatures. This study employs accurate, \textit{ab initio} calculations of the interaction potential energy surfaces (PESs) for these anions, treated as Rigid Rotors (RR) and the He atom to obtain a wide range of state-changing quantum cross sections and rates at temperatures up to about 100 K. The results are analysed and compared for the two systems, to show differences and similarities between their rates of state-changing dynamics.

In the present work, we report a detailed description of the symmetry properties of the eight-atomic molecule ethane, with the aim of facilitating the variational calculations of rotation-vibration spectra of ethane and related molecules. Ethane consists of two methyl groups $\text{CH}_3$ where the internal rotation (torsion) of one $\text{CH}_3$ group relative to the other is of large amplitude and involves tunneling between multiple minima of the potential energy function. The molecular symmetry group of ethane is the 36-element group $G_{36}$ but the construction of symmetrized basis functions is most conveniently done in terms of the 72-element extended molecular symmetry group $G_{36}\text{(EM)}$. This group can subsequently be used in the construction of block-diagonal matrix representations of the ro-vibrational Hamiltonian for ethane. The derived transformation matrices associated with $G_{36}\text{(EM)}$ have been implemented in the variational nuclear motion program TROVE (Theoretical ROVibrational Energies). TROVE variational calculations will be used as a practical example of a $G_{36}\text{(EM)}$ symmetry adaptation for large systems with a non-rigid, torsional degree of freedom. We present the derivation of irreducible transformation matrices for all 36 (72) operations of $G_{36}\text{(M)}$ ($G_{36}\text{(EM)}$) and also describe algorithms for a numerical construction of these matrices based on a set of four (five) generators. The methodology presented is illustrated on the construction of the symmetry-adapted representations both of the potential energy function of ethane and of the rotation, torsion and vibration basis set functions.

Abstract:
A new line list for ethylene, $^{12}$C$_2$$^1$H$_4$ is presented. The line list is based on high level ab initio potential energy and dipole moment surfaces. The potential energy surface is refined by fitting to experimental energies. A new line list for ethylene, $^{12}$C$_2$$^1$H$_4$ is presented. The line list is based on high level ab initio potential energy and dipole moment surfaces. The potential energy surface is refined by fitting to experimental energies. The line list covers the range up to 7000 cm$^{-1}$ (1.43 $μ$m) with all ro-vibrational transitions (50 billion) with the lower state below 5000 cm$^{-1}$ included and thus should be applicable for temperatures up to 700 K. A technique for computing molecular opacities from vibrational band intensities is proposed and used to provide temperature dependent cross sections of ethylene for shorter wavelength and higher temperatures. When combined with realistic band profiles (such as the proposed three-band model), the vibrational intensity technique offers a cheap but reasonably accurate alternative to the full ro-vibrational calculations at high temperatures and should be reliable for representing molecular opacities. The C$_2$H$_4$ line list, which is called MaYTY, is made available in electronic form from the CDS.
