We study the two families of AdS$_3\times S^3\times S^2\times Σ_2$ solutions to massive Type IIA supergravity with small and large $(0,4)$ supersymmetries constructed recently in the literature, in connection with the AdS$_7\times S^2\times I$ solutions to massive Type IIA, to which they asymptote locally. Based on our analysis of various observables, that we study holographically, we propose an interpretation of the first class of solutions as dual to deconstructed 6d (1,0) CFTs dual to AdS$_7$, and of the second class as dual to surface defects in the same 6d theories. Among the observables that we study are baryon vertices and giant graviton configurations in quiver-like constructions.

We study half-BPS flows in gauged minimal 7d supergravity featured by an AdS$_3\times S^3$ slicing of the metric, supported by a dyonic three-form field. We first present a novel strategy for analytic integration of the BPS equations, which makes use of the integrals of motion. Subsequently, we discuss the suitable choice of integration constants that gives rise to smooth geometries. These flows are asymptotically locally AdS$_7$ in their UV limit, while their IR geometry is AdS$_3\times \mathbb{R}^4$. We then discuss their uplifts to 11d and massive IIA supergravity and observe that they describe one-parameter deformations of their AdS$_7\times S^4$ and AdS$_7\times S^3$ vacua, respectively, their holographic interpretation being as conformal defect CFT$_2$'s within the corresponding dual SCFT$_6$'s. We conclude with the computation of the holographic central charge, by focussing on the M-theory interpretation.

We study the class of $\text{AdS}_3\times \mathbb{CP}^3$ solutions to massive Type IIA supergravity with $\mathfrak{osp}(6|2)$ superconformal algebra recently constructed in arXiv:2304.12207 [hep-th]. These solutions are foliations over an interval preserving $\mathcal{N}=(0,6)$ supersymmetry in two dimensions, that in the massless limit can be mapped to the $\text{AdS}_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$ solution of ABJM/ABJ. We show that in the massive case extra NS5-D8 branes, that we interpret as $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS surface defect branes within the ABJ theory, backreact in the geometry and turn one of the 3d field theory directions onto an energy scale, generating a flow towards a 2d CFT. We construct explicit quiver field theories that we propose flow in the IR to the $(0,6)$ SCFTs dual to the solutions. Finally, we show that the $\text{AdS}_3$ solutions realise geometrically, in terms of large gauge transformations, an extension to the massive case of Seiberg duality in ABJ theories proposed in the literature.

We focus on a class of Type IIB solutions with small $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetry, that we show can be embedded into a more general class of solutions obtained by double analytical continuation from $\text{AdS}_3$ geometries with small $\mathcal{N}=(0,4)$ supersymmetry constructed in the literature. We then start the analysis of the superconformal quantum mechanics dual to the $\mathcal{N}=4$ backgrounds focusing on a subclass of $\text{AdS}_2\times\text{S}^3\times\mathbb{T}^3$ solutions foliated over a Riemann surface. We show that the associated supersymmetric quantum mechanics describes monopole bubbling in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories living in D3-D7 branes, as previously discussed in the literature. Therefore, we propose that our solutions provide a geometrical description via holography of monopole bubbling in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs. We check our proposal with the computation of the central charge.

We show that a subclass of these solutions asymptotes locally to the $\text{AdS}_6\times S^2\times Σ_2$ solution to Type IIB supergravity holographically dual to the five dimensional Sp(N) fixed point theory. This suggests that these solutions can be interpreted as D1-F1-D3 line defects within this CFT. Switching off the D7-branes, we act with $\text{SL}(2, \mathbb{R})$ to construct a second family of solutions that can be related to an $\text{AdS}_3\times S^3\times S^3$ class of M-theory backgrounds describing surface defects within the six dimensional (1,0) SCFT dual to $\text{AdS}_7/\mathbb{Z}_k\times S^4$. We focus on a particular solution in this class asymptoting locally to an $\text{AdS}_5$ Gaiotto-Maldacena geometry. This solution allows for a line defect interpretation within the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT dual to this geometry, that we study in detail. We show that the defect branes, consisting on a non-trivial intersection of D2-D4-NS5-F1 branes, can be interpreted as baryon vertices within the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT, whose backreaction gives rise to the $\text{AdS}_2$ solution. We construct the explicit quiver quantum mechanics that flows in the IR to the dual SCQM, and show that it can be embedded within the quiver CFT associated to the $\text{AdS}_5$ solution. The quiver quantum mechanics arises from a brane box set-up of D2-branes stretched between perpendicular NS5-branes, that we construct from the $\text{AdS}_2$ solution. We provide non-trivial checks of our proposed duality. Our construction provides one further example of the successful applications of non-Abelian T-duality to holography, in this case in providing a very non-trivial connection between $\text{AdS}_2$ solutions, line defects and brane boxes.

The second subclass is when M$_4=\mathbb{T}^3\times I$ and the geometry is foliated over the interval. In this case supersymmetry is enhanced to $(4,4)$ in the massless limit, and the solutions are holographically dual to $(4,4)$ CFTs living in two dimensional D2-NS5-D4 Hanany-Witten brane set-ups. In turn, in the massive case the solutions find an interpretation as D2-D4 branes embedded in Type I' string theory. We construct explicit quiver gauge theories from the different brane set-ups that flow in the IR to the 2d dual CFTs dual to the solutions. We show that subclasses of these solutions can be interpreted in terms of defect branes embedded in 4d $\mathcal{N} = 4 $ SYM, or orbifolds thereof. This is explicitly realised by showing that the solutions asymptote locally to $\text{AdS}_5 \times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_n$, in Type IIB, or its T-dual background, in Type IIA. The latter is a Gaiotto-Maldacena geometry realised on an intersection of D4 and NS5 branes. We extend the Type IIA solutions to include D6 branes, and interpret them as describing backreacted baryon vertices within 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ CFTs living in D4-NS5-D6 intersections. We propose explicit quiver quantum mechanics in which the defect branes play the role of colour branes, with the D4 branes of the D4-NS5-D6 intersection becoming flavour branes. These quivers are used to compute the degeneracies of the ground states of the dual super conformal quantum mechanics, that are shown to agree with the holographic expressions.

We also construct a cohomogeneity-two family of solutions using non-Abelian T-duality. Finally, we relate the holographic central charge of our one dimensional system to a combination of electric and magnetic fluxes. We study $\textrm{AdS}_2\times S^4 \times S^2 \times Σ_2$ solutions in type IIB string theory arising from D1 -- D3 -- NS5 brane intersections. These backgrounds enjoy sixteen supercharges and the corresponding internal geometry is non-compact due to the specific form of the warping w.r.t. the Riemann surface $Σ_2$. Even though a direct computation of the holographic free energy of the would-be dual CFT$_1$ yields a divergent behaviour, it reveals the typical $N^3$ scaling of a 6d theory upon introducing a hard cut-off. We claim that such geometries may be interpreted as the gravity duals of M(atrix) models describing an IR phase of the $(2,0)$ theory of M5 branes, in presence of momentum and NUT charges. We discuss parallel $\textrm{AdS}_2$ geometries describing longitudinal M2 branes in the UV, where the counting of the number of degrees of freedom correctly reproduces the expected $N^{3/2}$ behaviour of the dual field theory. These geometries provide explicit examples where deconstructed extra dimensions yield well-defined UV descriptions in terms of higher-dimensional CFTs.

We find explicit global completions to this solution and provide well-defined (0,4) 2d dual CFTs associated to them. These completions consist of linear quivers with colour groups coming from D2 and D6 branes and flavour groups coming from D8 and D4 branes. For the first, M$_4$=CY$_2$ and we find a generalisation a D4-D8 system involving possible additional branes. For the second, M$_4$ need only be Kahler, and we find a generalisation of the T-dual of solutions based on D3-branes wrapping curves in the base of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold. Within these classes we find many new locally compact solutions that are foliations of AdS$_3\times \text{S}^2\times\text{CY}_2$ over an interval, bounded by various D brane and O plane behaviours. We comment on how these local solutions may be used as the building blocks of infinite classes of global solutions glued together with defect branes. Utilising T-duality we find two new classes of AdS$_3\times \text{S}^3\times \text{M}_4$ solutions in IIB. The first backreacts D5s and KK monopoles on the D1-D5 near horizon. The second is a generalisation of the solutions based on D3-branes wrapping curves in the base of an elliptically fibered CY$_3$ that includes non trivial 3-form flux.

In this paper we study an $AdS_5$ solution constructed using non-Abelian T-duality, acting on the Klebanov-Witten background. We show that this is dual to a linear quiver with two tails of gauge groups of increasing rank. The field theory dynamics arises from a D4-NS5-NS5' brane set-up, generalizing the constructions discussed by Bah and Bobev. These realize $\mathcal{N}=1$ quiver gauge theories built out of $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ vector multiplets flowing to interacting fixed points in the infrared. We compute the central charge using $a$-maximization, and show its precise agreement with the holographic calculation. Our result exhibits $n^3$ scaling with the number of five-branes. This suggests an eleven-dimensional interpretation in terms of M5-branes, a generic feature of various $AdS$ backgrounds obtained via non-Abelian T-duality.

The analysis of the asymptotics, quantised charges and probe branes in this geometry suggests an interpretation as the gravity dual to the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase Plane Wave Matrix Model, in a particular vacuum associated to a partition of $N$, in which the multiplicity of each $SU(2)$ irreducible representation is equal to its dimension. This vacuum is interpreted in M-theory in terms of giant gravitons backreacting in the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave geometry. Consistently with this, we show that the non-Abelian T-dual solution exactly agrees with the Penrose limit of the superstar solution in $AdS_7\times S^4$. This suggests an interesting global completion of the non-Abelian T-dual solution in terms of an M5-brane geometry.

We interpret our configuration as a patch of a more general background with localised sources, dual to the renormalisation fixed point of a $T_ρ^{\hatρ} (SU(N))$ quiver field theory. This relates explicitly the $AdS_4$ geometry to a D3-D5-NS5 brane intersection, illuminating what seems to be a more general phenomenon, relating $AdS_{p+1}$ backgrounds generated by non-Abelian T-duality to Dp-D(p+2)-NS5 branes intersections.

We construct a new AdS_4 background in Type IIB supergravity by means of a non-Abelian T-duality transformation on the Type IIA dual of ABJM. The analysis of probe and particle-like branes suggests a dual CFT in which each of the gauge groups is doubled. A common feature of non-Abelian T-duality is that in the absence of any global information coming from String Theory it gives rise to non-compact dual backgrounds, with coordinates living in the Lie algebra of the Lie group involved in the dualization. In backgrounds with CFT duals this poses obvious problems to the CFTs. In this paper we show that for the new AdS_4 background the gauge groups of the associated dual CFT undergo a spectral flow as the non-compact internal direction runs from 0 to infinity, which resembles Seiberg duality in N=1. This phenomenon, very reminiscent of the cascade, provides an interpretation in the CFT for the running of the non-compact coordinate, and suggests that at the end of the flow the extra charges disappear and the dual CFT is described by a 2-node quiver very similar to ABJM, albeit with reduced supersymmetry.

In eleven dimensions it gives rise to a squashed S^2 x S^3 M5-brane giant graviton which is now of the N_{10} type. The energies of both solutions satisfy the BPS bound E=kQ/2, indicating supersymmetric configurations, where Q is interpreted as D0-brane charge for the NS5-brane and as angular momentum for the dynamically stable M5-brane giant graviton. The ground state is degenerate with a spherical D2 or M2-brane, rather than with a point-like object. Moreover, while the charge of the spherical 2-brane can be arbitrary, the charge of the S^2 x S^3 5-brane is bounded by N/2, with N the rank of the ABJM gauge group, a manifestation of the stringy exclusion principle. A microscopic description, suitable for the study of the finite 't Hooft coupling region, is provided in terms of spherical D2 or M2-branes expanding into fuzzy 3-spheres.

For a general class of SO(4) symmetric backgrounds in type II-supergravity, we show that the action of non-Abelian T-duality can be described via consistent truncation to seven dimensional theories with seemingly massive modes. As such, any solution to these theories uplifts to both massive type IIA and IIB supergravities presenting an invertible map between the two. For supersymmetric backgrounds, we show that for spinors transforming under SO(4) the non-Abelian T-duality transformation breaks the original supersymmetry by half. We use these mappings to generate the non-Abelian T-duals of the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave, the Lin, Lunin, Maldacena geometries and spacetimes with Lifshitz symmetry.

We show that they exist in all AdS_5xY_5 backgrounds with Y_5 an Einstein manifold bearing five form flux, for a number of quarks 5N/8< k< N, independently on the supersymmetries preserved. This result still holds for gamma_i deformations. In the confining Maldacena-Nunez background non-singlet baryons also exist, although in this case the interval for the number of quarks is reduced as compared to the conformal case. We generalize these configurations to include a non-vanishing magnetic flux such that a complementary microscopical description can be given in terms of lower dimensional branes expanding into fuzzy baryons. This description is a first step towards exploring the finite 't Hooft coupling region.

In the maximal case the twisted 5-sphere reduces to a $CP^2$ and its energy can be accounted for both by a bound state of $k$ D4-branes wrapping the $CP^2$ and a bound state of $N$ D0-branes, a realization on the gravity side of the symmetry of Young diagrams with $N$ rows and $k$ columns. We discuss some generalizations of this configuration in M-theory carrying angular momentum, some of them with an interpretation as giant gravitons. We provide the microscopical description that allows to explore the region of finite 't Hooft coupling.

Abstract:
We extend previous work on non-abelian T-duality in the presence of Ramond fluxes to cases in which the duality group acts with isotropy such as in backgrounds containing coset spaces. In the process we generate new supergravity solutions related to D-brane configurations and to standard supergravity compactifications.

We show that these configurations capture the background fluxes in a way that depends on the induced charges, requiring additional fundamental strings to cancel the worldvolume tadpoles. The dynamics reveal that the charges must lie inside some interval, a situation familiar from the baryon vertex in AdS_5 x S^5 with charges. For the baryon vertex and the di-baryon the number of fundamental strings must also lie inside an allowed interval. Some ideas about the existence of these bounds in relation to the stringy exclusion principle are given.

We show that these configurations capture the background fluxes in a way that depends on the induced charges, and therefore, require additional fundamental strings in order to cancel the worldvolume tadpoles. The study of the dynamics reveals that the charges must lie inside some interval in order to find well defined configurations, a situation familiar from the baryon vertex in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with charges. For the baryon vertex and the di-baryon the number of fundamental strings must also lie inside an allowed interval. Our configurations are sensitive to the flat $B$-field recently suggested in the literature. We make some comments on its possible role. We also discuss how these configurations are modified in the presence of a non-zero Romans mass.

We construct an explicit dual action, appropriate for the strong coupling regime, which realizes a generalized Higgs-Stueckelberg phase for the (relative) (p-2)-form dual to the (overall) BI vector, the mechanism put forward by Yi and collaborators for realizing non-perturbatively the breaking of the overall U(1) gauge group. Our results provide an explicit realization of the perturbative breaking of the overall U(1) in a way that is consistent with the duality symmetries of String Theory.

We present a worldvolume effective action suitable for the study of the confined phase of a Dp-anti-Dp system at weak coupling. We identify the mechanism by which the fundamental string arises from this action as a confined electric flux string when the Dp and the anti-Dp annihilate. We construct an explicit dual action, more suitable for the study of the strong coupling regime, and show that it realizes a generalized Higgs-Stueckelberg phase for the (relative) (p-2)-form field dual to the (overall) BI vector. This is the mechanism put forward by Yi and collaborators based on duality arguments in order to explain the breaking of the overall U(1) gauge group at strong coupling. Indeed, in our dual description the Goldstone boson is a (p-3)-form magnetically charged with respect to the overall BI vector field. This indicates that the condensing tachyonic objects originate from open D(p-2)-branes stretched between the brane and the anti-brane. Our results provide an explicit realization of the breaking of the overall U(1) gauge group perturbatively, in a way consistent with the duality symmetries of String Theory.

We find that this configuration has minimal energy when put in the centre of AdS_5, where it behaves as a massless particle. When we take Y_5 to be S^5, we provide a microscopical description in terms of multiple gravitational waves expanding into the fuzzy S^5 defined as an S^1 bundle over the fuzzy CP^2. Finally we provide a possible field theory dual interpretation of the construction.

Abstract:
We generalise the baryon vertex configuration of AdS/CFT by adding magnetic field on its worldvolume, dissolving D-string charge. A careful analysis of the configuration shows that there is an upper bound on the number of dissolved strings. We provide a microscopical description of this configuration in terms of a dielectric effect for the dissolved strings.

We then show that in the M-theory maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background, the action for coincident gravitons, besides reproducing the BMN Matrix model, predicts a new quadrupolar coupling to the M-theory 6-form potential, which supports the so far elusive fuzzy 5-sphere giant graviton solution. Finally, we discuss similar Matrix models that can be derived in Type II string theories using dualities.
