The results agree with the Standard Model expectation of lepton flavour universality.

A classical particle in a harmonic potential gives rise to a continuous energy spectra, whereas the corresponding quantum particle exhibits countably infinite quantized energy levels. In recent years, classical non-Markovian wave-particle entities that materialize as walking droplets, have been shown to exhibit various hydrodynamic quantum analogs, including quantization in a harmonic potential via limit cycle orbits. However, the number of co-existing quantized states are limited to at most a few limit cycles. By considering a minimal generalized pilot-wave model of the system in the low-memory and low-dissipation regime, we obtain a classical harmonic oscillator perturbed by an oscillatory non-conservative force that displays a countably infinite coexisting limit-cycle states, also know as \emph{megastability}; thus forming a dynamical analog of infinite quantized states. Using averaging techniques, we derive an analytical approximation of the orbital radii, orbital frequency and Lyapunov energy function, of this megastable spectrum, and further show average energy conservation along these quantized states. Our formalism extends to a general class of self-excited oscillators and can be used to construct megastable spectrum with different energy-frequency relations.

Digitalization efforts often face a key challenge: business processes must not only be efficient in achieving their goals but also adhere to legal regulations. Business process compliance refers to aligning processes with these regulations. Numerous frameworks have been developed to address this, with the earliest dating back to 1981. This study focuses on rigorous frameworks using formal methods to verify or ensure compliance. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) on process compliance frameworks based on formal models. Our goal was to assess the current state of research on process model compliance and identify gaps and opportunities for future work. Starting with 5018 candidate studies from 1981 to the establishment of GDPR, we selected 46 primary studies. These frameworks were categorized by their phases, the languages used for processes and compliance, and their reasoning techniques. We also examined their practical applicability, the case studies they were tested on, the types of users involved, and the skills needed for compliance. Also, we assessed the maturity of each framework. Our findings reveal strong consensus around verification techniques as central to process compliance, though there is less agreement on the earlier and later phases of compliance. Model checking is the dominant technique, but the compliance and process languages have evolved. Most frameworks are still conceptual with prototype implementations, often failing to account for compliance professionals like legal experts or law changes. In conclusion, there is a need for comprehensive empirical studies to better understand the anatomy and maturity of regulatory compliance frameworks, and for robust evaluation methods to benchmark these frameworks. This review offers valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in process compliance.

Contemporary wireless communications systems adopt the Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) technique: a single base station or Access Point (AP) equipped with multiple antenna elements serves multiple active users simultaneously. Aiming at providing a more uniform wireless coverage, industry and academia have been working towards the evolution from centralized MIMO to Distributed-MIMO. That is, instead of having all the antenna elements co-located at a single AP, multiple APs, each equipped with a few or a single antenna element, jointly cooperate to serve the active users in the coverage area. In this work, we evaluate the performance of different D-MIMO setups under Rician fading, and considering different receive combining schemes. Note that the Rician fading model is convenient for MU-MIMO performance assessment, as it encompasses a wide variety of scenarios. Our numerical results show that the correlation among the channel vectors of different users increases with the Rician factor, which leads to a reduction on the achievable Spectral Efficiency (SE). Moreover, given a total number of antenna elements, there is an optimal number of APs and antenna elements per AP that provides the best performance. This "sweet spot" depends on the Rician factor and on the adopted receive combining scheme.

Using $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4$ fb$^{-1}$, the forward-backward asymmetry in the $pp \to Z/γ^{*} \to μ^+μ^-$ process is measured. The measurement is carried out in ten intervals of the difference between the muon pseudorapidities, within a fiducial region covering dimuon masses between $66$ and $116$ GeV, muon pseudorapidities between $2.0$ and $4.5$ and muon transverse momenta above $20$ GeV. These forward-backward asymmetries are compared with predictions, at next-to-leading order in the strong and electroweak couplings. The measured effective leptonic weak mixing angle is $\sin^2θ_{\rm eff}^\ell = 0.23147 \pm 0.00044 \pm 0.00005 \pm 0.00023$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second arises from systematic uncertainties associated with the asymmetry measurement, and the third arises from uncertainties in the fit model used to extract $\sin^2θ_{\rm eff}^\ell$ from the asymmetry measurement. This result is based on an arithmetic average of results using the CT18, MSHT20, and NNPDF31 parameterisations of the proton internal structure, and is consistent with previous measurements and with predictions from the global electroweak fit.

Different conditions guaranteeing that the closed-convex hull of the sum is the sum of the corresponding closed-convex hulls are provided. These conditions are expressed in terms of some epsilon-subdifferential calculus rules for the sum. The case of convex functions is also studied, and exact calculus rules are given under additional continuity/qualifications conditions. As an illustration, a variant of the proof of the classical Rockafellar theorem on convex integration is proposed.

Understanding and predicting pedestrian crossing behavioral intention is crucial for autonomous vehicles driving safety. Nonetheless, challenges emerge when using promising images or environmental context masks to extract various factors for time-series network modeling, causing pre-processing errors or a loss in efficiency. Typically, pedestrian positions captured by onboard cameras are often distorted and do not accurately reflect their actual movements. To address these issues, GTransPDM -- a Graph-embedded Transformer with a Position Decoupling Module -- was developed for pedestrian crossing intention prediction by leveraging multi-modal features. First, a positional decoupling module was proposed to decompose the pedestrian lateral movement and simulate depth variations in the image view. Then, a graph-embedded Transformer was designed to capture the spatial-temporal dynamics of human pose skeletons, integrating essential factors such as position, skeleton, and ego-vehicle motion. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method achieves 92% accuracy on the PIE dataset and 87% accuracy on the JAAD dataset, with a processing speed of 0.05ms. It outperforms the state-of-the-art in comparison.

The vacuum entanglement entropy of a general conformal field theory (CFT) in $d=5$ spacetime dimensions contains a universal term, $F(A)$, which has a complicated and non-local dependence on the geometric details of the region $A$ and the theory. Analogously to the previously known $d=3$ case, we prove that for CFTs in $d=5$ which are holographically dual to Einstein gravity, $F(A)$ is equal to a four-dimensional version of the ``Willmore energy'' associated to a doubled and closed version of the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) surface of $A$ embedded in $\mathbb{R}^5$. This generalized Willmore energy is shown to arise from a conformal-invariant codimension-two functional obtained by evaluating six-dimensional Conformal Gravity on the conically-singular orbifold of the replica trick. The new functional involves an integral over the doubled RT surface of a linear combination of three quartic terms in extrinsic curvatures and is free from ultraviolet divergences by construction. We verify explicitly the validity of our new formula for various entangling regions and argue that, as opposed to the $d=3$ case, $F(A)$ is not globally minimized by a round ball $A=\mathbb{B}^4$. Rather, $F(A)$ can take arbitrarily positive and negative values as a function of $A$. Hence, we conclude that the round ball is not a global minimizer of $F(A)$ for general five-dimensional CFTs.

Discontinuous reception (DRX) is a key technology for reducing the energy consumption of industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices. Specifically, DRX allows the devices to operate in a low-power mode when no data reception is scheduled, and its effectiveness depends on the proper configuration of the DRX parameters. In this paper, we characterize the DRX process departing from a semi-Markov chain modeling. We detail two ways to set DRX parameters to minimize the device power consumption while meeting a mean delay constraint. The first method exhaustively searches for the optimal configuration. In contrast, the second method uses a low-complexity metaheuristic to find a sub-optimal configuration, thus considering ideal and practical DRX configurations. Notably, within the DRX parameters, the inactivity timer (IT) is a caution time that specifies how long a device remains active after the last information exchange. Traditionally, a device implementing DRX will restart the IT after each data reception as a precedent to a low-power mode. The usual approach lies in restarting the IT whenever new data is received during this cautious period, which might sometimes needlessly extend the active time. Herein, we propose a more efficient method in which the transmit base station (BS) explicitly indicates restarting the timer through the control channel only when appropriate. The decision is taken based on the BS's knowledge about its buffer status. We consider Poisson and bursty traffic models, which are typical in IIoT setups, and verify the suitability of our proposal for reducing the energy consumption of the devices without significantly compromising the communication latency through extensive numerical simulations. Specifically, energy-saving gains of up to 30% can be obtained regardless of the arrival rate and delay constraints.

Large-scale structure (LSS) studies in cosmology map and analyse matter in the Universe on the largest scales. Understanding the LSS can provide observational support for the Cosmological Principle (CP) and the Standard Cosmological Model ($Λ$CDM). In recent years, many discoveries have been made of LSSs that are so large that they become difficult to understand within $Λ$CDM. Reasons for this are: they potentially challenge the CP, (i.e. the scale of homogeneity); and their formation and origin are not fully understood. In this article we review two recent LSS discoveries: the Giant Arc (GA, $\sim 1$ Gpc) and the Big Ring (BR, $\sim 400$ Mpc). Both structures are in the same cosmological neighbourhood -- at the same redshift $z \sim 0.8$ and with a separation on the sky of only $\sim 12^\circ$. Both structures exceed the often-cited scale of homogeneity (Yadav+ 2010), so individually and together, these two intriguing structures raise more questions for the validity of the CP and potentially hint at new physics beyond the Standard Model. The GA and BR were discovered using a novel method of mapping faint matter at intermediate redshifts, interpreted from the MgII absorption doublets seen in the spectra of background quasars.

In the digital era, the internet and social media have transformed communication but have also facilitated the spread of hate speech and disinformation, leading to radicalization, polarization, and toxicity. This is especially concerning for media outlets due to their significant role in shaping public discourse. This study examines the topics, sentiments, and hate prevalence in 337,807 response messages (website comments and tweets) to news from five Spanish media outlets (La Vanguardia, ABC, El País, El Mundo, and 20 Minutos) in January 2021. These public reactions were originally labeled as distinct types of hate by experts following an original procedure, and they are now classified into three sentiment values (negative, neutral, or positive) and main topics. The BERTopic unsupervised framework was used to extract 81 topics, manually named with the help of Large Language Models (LLMs) and grouped into nine primary categories.
Results show social issues (22.22%), expressions and slang (20.35%), and political issues (11.80%) as the most discussed. Content is mainly negative (62.7%) and neutral (28.57%), with low positivity (8.73%). Toxic narratives relate to conversation expressions, gender, feminism, and COVID-19. Despite low levels of hate speech (3.98%), the study confirms high toxicity in online responses to social and political topics.

The new in situ measurements of the Solar Orbiter mission contribute to the knowledge of the suprathermal populations in the solar wind, especially of ions and protons whose characterization, although still in the early phase, seems to suggest a major involvement in the interaction with plasma wave fluctuations. Recent studies point to the stimulating effect of suprathermal populations on temperature anisotropy instabilities in the case of electrons already being demonstrated in theory and numerical simulations. Here, we investigate anisotropic protons, addressing the electromagnetic ion-cyclotron (EMIC) and the proton firehose (PFH) instabilities. Suprathermal populations enhance the high-energy tails of the Kappa velocity (or energy) distributions measured in situ, enabling characterization by contrasting to the quasi-thermal population in the low-energy (bi-)Maxwellian core. We use hybrid simulations to investigate the two instabilities (with ions or protons as particles and electrons as fluid) for various configurations relevant to the solar wind and terrestrial magnetosphere. The new simulation results confirm the linear theory and its predictions. In the presence of suprathermal protons, the wave fluctuations reach increased energy density levels for both instabilities and cause faster and/or deeper relaxation of temperature anisotropy. The magnitude of suprathermal effects also depends on each instability's specific (initial) parametric regimes. These results further strengthen the belief that wave-particle interactions govern space plasmas. These provide valuable clues for understanding their dynamics, particularly the involvement of suprathermal particles behind the quasi-stationary non-equilibrium states reported by in situ observations.

A fundamental construction in formal language theory is the Myhill-Nerode congruence on words, whose finitedness characterizes regular language. This construction was generalized to functions from $Σ^*$ to $\mathbb{Z}$ by Colcombet, Douéneau-Tabot, and Lopez to characterize the class of so-called $\mathbb{Z}$-polyregular functions. In this paper, we relax the notion of equivalence relation to quasi-ordering in order to study the class of $\mathbb{N}$-polyregular functions, that plays the role of $\mathbb{Z}$-polyregular functions among functions from $Σ^*$ to $\mathbb{N}$. The analogue of having a finite index is then being a well-quasi-ordering. This provides a canonical object to describe $\mathbb{N}$-polyregular functions, together with a powerful new characterization of this class.

The ${Ξ_{b}^{0(-)}\toΞ_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}(\to D^{+(0)}Λ)π^{-}}$ decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of $Ξ_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\text{fb}^{-1}$, recorded by the~$\text{LHCb}$ experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the $Ξ_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons is determined to be $3/2^{+}$ with a significance of more than $6.5σ$ ($3.5σ$) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the ${Ξ_{b}^{0(-)}\toΞ_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}π^{-}}$ transitions are measured to be $-0.92\pm0.10\pm0.05$ ($-0.92\pm0.16\pm0.22$), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These results support the hypothesis that the $Ξ_{c}(3055)^{+(0)}$ baryons correspond to the first $D$-wave $λ$-mode excitation of the $Ξ_{c}$ flavor triplet.

They are performed by requiring both muons to be in the LHCb acceptance (with pseudorapidity $2<η_{μ^\pm} < 4.5$) and mesons in the rapidity range $2.0 < y < 4.5$. The integrated cross-section results are \begin{equation*}
σ_{J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-}(2.0<y_{J/ψ}<4.5,2.0<η_{μ^\pm} < 4.5) = 400 \pm 2 \pm 5 \pm 12 \,{\rm pb}\,,
\end{equation*} \begin{equation*}
σ_{ψ(2S)\toμ^+μ^-}(2.0<y_{ψ(2S)}<4.5,2.0<η_{μ^\pm} < 4.5) = 9.40 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.27 \,{\rm pb}\,, \end{equation*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the luminosity determination. In addition, a measurement of the ratio of $ψ(2S)$ and $J/ψ$ cross-sections, at an average photon-proton centre-of-mass energy of 1 TeV, is performed, giving \begin{equation*}
\frac{σ_{ψ(2S)}}{σ_{J/ψ}} = 0.1763 \pm 0.0029 \pm 0.0008 \pm 0.0039 \,, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the knowledge of the involved branching fractions. For the first time, the dependence of the $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ cross-sections on the total transverse momentum transfer is determined in $pp$ collisions and is found consistent with the behaviour observed in electron-proton collisions.

C_{D^{+}D^{-}} & = \phantom{-}0.128 \pm0.103\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.010\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} In $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}$ decays the $CP$-violating parameter formulation in terms of $φ_{s}$ and $|λ|$ results in \begin{align}
φ_{s} & = -0.086 \pm 0.106 \,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.028\,\text{(syst)} \,\text{rad}, \nonumber \newline
|λ_{D^{+}_{s}D^{-}_{s}}| & = \phantom{-}1.145 \pm 0.126\,\text{(stat)} \pm 0.031\,\text{(syst)}. \nonumber \end{align} These results represent the most precise single measurement of the $CP$-violation parameters in their respective channels. For the first time in a single measurement, $CP$ symmetry is observed to be violated in ${B^0}\rightarrow{D^{+}D^{-}}$ decays with a significance exceeding six standard deviations.

The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ($C\!P$) asymmetries are measured, with no significant $C\!P$ violation observed. For the first time, the $\itΛ^\mathrm{0}_b \to \itΛ_c^+ h^-$ decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters $α, β$ and $γ$ are obtained for $\itΛ_c^+$ decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon $\itΛ$ decay is provided. The results deepen our understanding of weak decay dynamics in baryon decays.

Direct-to-Satellite IoT (DtS-IoT) has the potential to support multiple verticals, including agriculture, industry, smart cities, and environmental disaster prevention. This work introduces two novel DtS-IoT schemes using power domain NonOrthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) in the uplink with either fixed (FTP) or controlled (CTP) transmit power. We consider that the IoT devices use LoRa technology to transmit data packets to the satellite in orbit, equipped with a Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC)-enabled gateway. We also assume the IoT devices are empowered with a predictor of the satellite orbit. Using real geographic location and trajectory data, we evaluate the performance of the average number of successfully decoded transmissions, goodput (bytes/lap), and energy consumption (bytes/Joule) as a function of the number of network devices. Numerical results show the trade-off between goodput and energy efficiency for both proposed schemes. Comparing FTP and CTP with regular ALOHA for 100 (600) devices, we find goodput improvements of 65% (29%) and 52% (101%), respectively. Notably, CTP effectively leverages transmission opportunities as the network size increases, outperforming the other strategies. Moreover, CTP shows the best performance in energy efficiency compared to FTP and ALOHA.

In this work we explore the application of AI to robotic welding. Robotic welding is a widely used technology in many industries, but robots currently do not have the capability to detect welding defects which get introduced due to various reasons in the welding process. We describe how deep-learning methods can be applied to detect weld defects in real-time by recording the welding process with microphones and a camera. Our findings are based on a large database with more than 4000 welding samples we collected which covers different weld types, materials and various defect categories. All deep learning models are trained in an unsupervised fashion because the space of possible defects is large and the defects in our data may contain biases. We demonstrate that a reliable real-time detection of most categories of weld defects is feasible both from audio and video, with improvements achieved by combining both modalities. Specifically, the multi-modal approach achieves an average Area-under-ROC-Curve (AUC) of 0.92 over all eleven defect types in our data. We conclude the paper with an analysis of the results by defect type and a discussion of future work.

In situ observations by the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) have revealed new properties of the proton velocity distributions, including hammerhead features that suggest non-isotropic broadening of the beams. The present work proposes a very plausible explanation for the formation of these populations through the action of a proton firehose-like instability triggered by the proton beam. The quasi-linear (QL) theory proposed here shows that the resulting right-hand (RH) waves have two consequences on the protons: (i) reduce the relative drift between the beam and the core, but above all, (ii) induce a strong perpendicular temperature anisotropy, specific to the observed hammerhead ion strahl. Moreover, the long-run QL results suggest that these hammerhead distributions are rather transitory states, still subject to relaxation mechanisms, of which instabilities like the one discussed here are very likely involved.

The Internet-of-Things (IoT) is rapidly expanding, connecting numerous devices and becoming integral to our daily lives. As this occurs, ensuring efficient traffic management becomes crucial. Effective IoT traffic management requires modeling and predicting intrincate machine-type communication (MTC) dynamics, for which machine-learning (ML) techniques are certainly appealing. However, obtaining comprehensive and high-quality datasets, along with accessible platforms for reproducing ML-based predictions, continues to impede the research progress. In this paper, we aim to fill this gap by characterizing the Smart Campus MTC dataset provided by the University of Oulu. Specifically, we perform a comprehensive statistical analysis of the MTC traffic utilizing goodness-of-fit tests, including well-established tests such as Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Anderson-Darling, chi-squared, and root mean square error. The analysis centers on examining and evaluating three models that accurately represent the two most significant MTC traffic types: periodic updating and event-driven, which are also identified from the dataset. The results demonstrate that the models accurately characterize the traffic patterns. The Poisson point process model exhibits the best fit for event-driven patterns with errors below 11%, while the quasi-periodic model fits accurately the periodic updating traffic with errors below 7%.

A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the $D^+$ and $D^-$ phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the $D^+_{s}\rightarrow K^-K^+π^+$ decay as a control channel. The $p$-value for the hypothesis of $C\!P$ conservation is $8.1\%$. The $C\!P$ asymmetry observables $A_{C\!P|S}^{φπ^+} = (0.95 \pm 0.43_{stat} \pm 0.26_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ and $A_{C\!P|S}^{\overline{K}^{*0}K^+} = (-0.26 \pm 0.56_{ stat} \pm 0.18_{syst})\times 10^{-3}$ are also measured. These results show no evidence of $C\!P$ violation and represent the most sensitive search performed through the phase space of a multibody decay.

In the paper, we extend the widely used in optimization theory decoupling techniques to infinite collections of functions. Extended concepts of uniform lower semicontinuity and firm uniform lower semicontinuity as well as the new concepts of weak uniform lower semicontinuity and robust infimum are discussed. We study the uniform and robust minimum, and provide conditions under which these minimality concepts reduce to the conventional one. The main theorem gives fuzzy subdifferential necessary conditions (multiplier rules) for a quasiuniform local minimum of the sum of an infinite collection of functions without the traditional Lipschitz continuity assumptions. We consider a general infinite convex optimization problem, and develop a methodology for closing the duality gap and guaranteeing strong duality. In this setting, application of the fuzzy multiplier and sum rules for infinite sums produces general optimality conditions/multiplier rules.

Accurate orientation estimation of an object in a scene is critical in robotics, aerospace, augmented reality, and medicine, as it supports scene understanding. This paper introduces a novel orientation estimation approach leveraging radio frequency (RF) sensing technology and leaky-wave antennas (LWAs). Specifically, we propose a framework for a radar system to estimate the orientation of a \textit{dumb} LWA-equipped backscattering tag, marking the first exploration of this method in the literature. Our contributions include a comprehensive framework for signal modeling and orientation estimation with multi-subcarrier transmissions, and the formulation of a maximum likelihood estimator (MLE). Moreover, we analyze the impact of imperfect tag location information, revealing that it minimally affects estimation accuracy. Exploiting related results, we propose an approximate MLE and introduce a low-complexity radiation-pointing angle-based estimator with near-optimal performance. We derive the feasible orientation estimation region of the latter and show that it depends mainly on the system bandwidth. Our analytical results are validated through Monte Carlo simulations and reveal that the low-complexity estimator achieves near-optimal accuracy and that its feasible orientation estimation region is also approximately shared by the other estimators. Finally, we show that the optimal number of subcarriers increases with sensing time under a power budget constraint.

The phenomenon of beam focusing of microwaves in a plasma near a turning-point caustic is discussed in the context of the analytical solution to the Gaussian beam-tracing equations in the 2D linear-layer problem. The location of maximum beam focusing and the beam width at that location are studied in terms of the beam initial conditions. The analytic solution is used to study the effect of this focusing on Doppler backscattering (DBS). We find that the filter function that characterises the scattering intensity contributions along the beam path through the plasma is inversely proportional to the beam width, predicting enhanced scattering contributions from the beam focusing region. We show that the DBS signal enhancement for small incident angles between the beam path and the density gradient is due to beam focusing and not due to forward scattering. The analytic beam model is used to predict the measurement of the $k_y$ density-fluctuation wavenumber power spectrum via DBS, showing that the spectral exponent of the turbulent, intermediate-to-high $k_y$ density-fluctuation spectrum might be quantitatively measurable via DBS, but not the spectral peak corresponding to the driving scale of the turbulent cascade.

Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) is a pivotal technology in present-day wireless communication systems. In such systems, a base station or Access Point (AP) is equipped with multiple antenna elements and serves multiple active devices simultaneously. Nevertheless, most of the works evaluating the performance of MU-MIMO systems consider APs with static antenna arrays, that is, without any movement capability. Recently, the idea of APs and antenna arrays that are able to move have gained traction among the research community. Many works evaluate the communications performance of antenna systems able to move on the horizontal plane. However, such APs require a very bulky, complex and expensive movement system. In this work, we propose a simpler and cheaper alternative: the utilization of rotary APs, i.e. APs that can rotate. We also analyze the performance of a system in which the AP is able to both move and rotate. The movements and/or rotations of the APs are computed in order to maximize the mean per-user achievable spectral efficiency, based on estimates of the locations of the active devices and using particle swarm optimization. We adopt a spatially correlated Rician fading channel model, and evaluate the resulting optimized performance of the different setups in terms of mean per-user achievable spectral efficiencies. Our numerical results show that both the optimal rotations and movements of the APs can provide substantial performance gains when the line-of-sight components of the channel vectors are strong. Moreover, the simpler rotary APs can outperform the movable APs when their movement area is constrained.

The decays of the $χ_{b1}(1P)$, $χ_{b2}(1P)$, $χ_{b1}(2P)$ and $χ_{b2}(2P)$~mesons into the~$Υ(1S)μ^+μ^-$ final state are observed with a high significance using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb$^{-1}$. The newly observed decays together with the $Υ(2S)\rightarrow Υ(1S)π^+π^-$ and $Υ(3S)\rightarrow Υ(2S)π^+π^-$ decay modes are used for precision measurements of the mass and mass splittings for the hidden-beauty states.

The design and optimization of laser-Compton x-ray systems based on compact distributed charge accelerator structures can enable micron-scale imaging of disease and the concomitant production of beams of Very High Energy Electrons (VHEEs) capable of producing FLASH-relevant dose rates. The physics of laser-Compton x-ray scattering ensures that the scattered x-rays follow exactly the trajectory of the incident electrons, thus providing a route to image-guided, VHEE FLASH radiotherapy. The keys to a compact architecture capable of producing both laser-Compton x-rays and VHEEs are the use of X-band RF accelerator structures which have been demonstrated to operate with over 100 MeV/m acceleration gradients. The operation of these structures in a distributed charge mode in which each radiofrequency (RF) cycle of the drive RF pulse is filled with a low-charge, high-brightness electron bunch is enabled by the illumination of a high-brightness photogun with a train of UV laser pulses synchronized to the frequency of the underlying accelerator system. The UV pulse trains are created by a patented pulse synthesis approach which utilizes the RF clock of the accelerator to phase and amplitude modulate a narrow band continuous wave (CW) seed laser. In this way it is possible to produce up to 10 μA of average beam current from the accelerator. Such high current from a compact accelerator enables production of sufficient x-rays via laser-Compton scattering for clinical imaging and does so from a machine of "clinical" footprint. At the same time, the production of 1000 or greater individual micro-bunches per RF pulse enables > 10 nC of charge to be produced in a macrobunch of < 100 ns. The design, construction, and test of the 100-MeV class prototype system in Irvine, CA is also presented.

Young, self-luminous super-Jovian companions discovered by direct imaging provide a challenging test of planet formation and evolution theories. By spectroscopically characterizing the atmospheric compositions of these super-Jupiters, we can constrain their formation histories. Here we present studies of the recently discovered HIP 99770 b, a 16 MJup high-contrast companion on a 17 au orbit, using the fiber-fed high-resolution spectrograph KPIC (R~35,000) on the Keck II telescope. Our K-band observations led to detections of H2O and CO in the atmosphere of HIP 99770 b. We carried out free retrieval analyses using petitRADTRANS to measure its chemical abundances, including the metallicity and C/O ratio, projected rotation velocity (vsini), and radial velocity (RV). We found that the companion's atmosphere has C/O=0.55(-0.04/+0.06) and [M/H]=0.26(-0.23/+0.24) (1σ confidence intervals), values consistent with those of the Sun and with a companion formation via gravitational instability or core accretion. The projected rotation velocity < 7.8 km/s is small relative to other directly imaged companions with similar masses and ages. This may imply a near pole-on orientation or effective magnetic braking by a circumplanetary disk. In addition, we added the companion-to-primary relative RV measurement to the orbital fitting and obtained updated constraints on orbital parameters. Detailed characterization of super-Jovian companions within 20 au like HIP 99770 b is critical for understanding the formation histories of this population.

The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a linearly-varying index of refraction is a fundamental problem in wave physics, being relevant in fusion science for describing certain wave-based heating and diagnostic schemes. Here, an exact solution is obtained for a given incoming wavefield specified on the boundary transverse to the direction of inhomogeneity by performing a spectral, rather than asymptotic, matching. Two case studies are then presented: a Gaussian beam at oblique incidence and a speckled wavefield at normal incidence. For the Gaussian beam, it is shown that when the waist $W$ is sufficiently large, oblique incidence manifests simply as rigid translation and focal shift of the corresponding diffraction pattern at normal incidence. The destruction of the hyperbolic umbilic caustic (corresponding to a critically focused beam) as $W$ is reduced is then demonstrated. The caustic disappears once $W \lesssim δ_a \sqrt{L}$ ($L$ being the medium lengthscale normalized by the Airy skin depth $δ_a$), at which point the wave behavior is increasingly described by Airy functions, but experiences less focusing as a result. To maximize the intensity of a launched Gaussian beam at a turning point, one should therefore minimize the imaginary part of the launched complex beam parameter while having the real part satisfy critical focusing. For the speckled wavefield, it is shown that the transverse speckle pattern only couples to the Airy longitudinal pattern when the coupling parameter $η= \sqrt{L}/f_\#$ is large, with $f_\#$ being the f-number of the launching aperture. When $η\ll 1$, a reduced description of the total wavefield can be obtained by simply multiplying the incoming speckle pattern with the Airy swelling.

A measurement of the time-dependent ratio of the $D^0\rightarrow K^+π^-$ to $\overline{D}^0\rightarrow K^+π^-$ decay rates is reported. The analysis uses a sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb$^-1$ recorded by the LHCb experiment from 2015 through 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The $D^0$ meson is required to originate from a $D^{*+}\rightarrow D^0π^+$ decay, such that its flavor at production is inferred from the charge of the accompanying pion. The measurement is performed simultaneously for the $K^+π^-$ and $K^-π^+$ final states, allowing both mixing and $CP$-violation parameters to be determined. The value of the ratio of the decay rates at production is determined to be $R_{Kπ} = (343.1 \pm 2.0) \times 10^{-5}$. The mixing parameters are measured to be $c_{Kπ} = (51.4 \pm 3.5) \times 10^{-4}$ and $c_{Kπ}^{\prime} = (13 \pm 4) \times 10^{-6}$, where $\sqrt{R_{Kπ}}c_{Kπ}$ is the linear coefficient of the expansion of the ratio as a function of decay time in units of the $D^0$ lifetime, and $c_{Kπ}^{\prime}$ is the quadratic coefficient, both averaged between the $K^+π^-$ and $K^-π^+$ final states. The precision is improved relative to the previous best measurement by approximately 60%. No evidence for $CP$ violation is found.

Efficient Random Access (RA) is critical for enabling reliable communication in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) networks. Herein, we propose a deep reinforcement learning based distributed RA scheme, entitled Neural Network-Based Bandit (NNBB), for the IIoT alarm scenario. In such a scenario, the devices may detect a common critical event, and the goal is to ensure the alarm information is delivered successfully from at least one device. The proposed NNBB scheme is implemented at each device, where it trains itself online and establishes implicit inter-device coordination to achieve the common goal. Devices can transmit simultaneously on multiple orthogonal channels and each possible transmission pattern constitutes a possible action for the NNBB, which uses a deep neural network to determine the action. Our simulation results show that as the number of devices in the network increases, so does the performance gain of the NNBB compared to the Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) RA benchmark. For instance, NNBB experiences a 7% success rate drop when there are four channels and the number of devices increases from 10 to 60, while MAB faces a 25% drop.

The first full amplitude analysis of $B^+ \to ψ(2S) K^+ π^+ π^-$ decays is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ recorded with the LHCb detector. The rich $K^+ π^+ π^-$ spectrum is studied and the branching fractions of the resonant substructure associated with the prominent $K_1(1270)^+$ contribution are measured. The data cannot be described by conventional strange and charmonium resonances only. An amplitude model with 53 components is developed comprising 11 hidden-charm exotic hadrons. New production mechanisms for charged charmonium-like states are observed. Significant resonant activity with spin-parity $J^P = 1^+$ in the $ψ(2S) π^+$ system is confirmed and a multi-pole structure is demonstrated. The spectral decomposition of the $ψ(2S) π^+ π^-$ invariant-mass structure, dominated by $X^0 \to ψ(2S) ρ(770)^0$ decays, broadly resembles the $J/ψφ$ spectrum observed in $B^+ \to J/ψφK^+$ decays. Exotic $ψ(2S) K^+ π^-$ resonances are observed for the first time.

This paper provides a comprehensive examination of the evolution of credit cards in the United States, tracing their historical development, causes, consequences, and impact on both individuals and the economy. It delves into the transformation of credit cards from specialized merchant cards to ubiquitous financial tools, driven by legal changes like the Marquette decision. Credit card debt has emerged as a significant financial challenge for many Americans due to economic factors, consumerism, high healthcare costs, and financial illiteracy. The consequences of this debt on individuals are extensive, affecting their financial well-being, credit scores, savings, and even their physical and mental health. On a larger scale, credit cards stimulate consumer spending, drive e-commerce growth, and generate revenue for financial institutions, but they can also contribute to economic instability if not managed responsibly. The paper emphasizes various strategies to prevent and manage credit card debt, including financial education, budgeting, responsible credit card uses, and professional counselling. Empirical studies support the relationship between credit card debt and factors such as financial literacy and consumer behavior. Regression analysis reveals that personal consumption and GDP positively impacts credit card debt indicating that responsible management is essential. The paper offers comprehensive recommendations for addressing credit card debt challenges and maximizing the benefits of credit card usage, encompassing financial education, policy reforms, and public awareness campaigns. These recommendations aim to transform credit cards into tools that empower individuals financially and contribute to economic stability, rather than sources of financial stress.

A promising branch of neuromorphic computing aims to perform cognitive operations in hardware leveraging the physics of efficient and well-established nano-devices. In this work, we present a reconfigurable classifier based on a network of electrically connected magnetic tunnel junctions that categorizes information encoded in the amplitude of input currents through the spin torque driven magnetization switching output configuration. The network can be trained to classify new data by adjusting additional programming currents applied selectively to the junctions. We experimentally demonstrate that a network composed of three magnetic tunnel junctions can learn to classify spoken vowels with a recognition rate that surpasses the performance of software multilayer neural networks with the same number of trained parameters in this task. These results, obtained with the same nano-devices and working principle employed in industrial spin-transfer torque magnetic random-access memories (STT-MRAM), constitute an important step towards the development of large-scale neuromorphic networks based on well-established technology.

Language models of code have demonstrated state-of-the-art performance across various software engineering and source code analysis tasks. However, their demanding computational resource requirements and consequential environmental footprint remain as significant challenges. This work introduces ALPINE, an adaptive programming language-agnostic pruning technique designed to substantially reduce these models' computational overhead. The proposed method offers a pluggable layer that can be integrated with all Transformer-based models. With ALPINE, input sequences undergo adaptive compression throughout the pipeline, reaching a size up to $\times 3$ less their initial size, resulting in significantly reduced computational load. Our experiments on two software engineering tasks, defect prediction and code clone detection across three language models CodeBERT, GraphCodeBERT and UniXCoder show that ALPINE achieves up to a 50% reduction in FLOPs, a 58.1% decrease in memory footprint, and a 28.1% improvement in throughput on average. This led to a reduction in CO2 by up to $44.85$%. Importantly, it achieves the reduction in computation resources while maintaining up to 98.1% of the original predictive performance. These findings highlight the potential of ALPINE in making language models of code more resource-efficient and accessible while preserving their performance, contributing to the overall sustainability of adopting language models in software development. Also, it sheds light on redundant and noisy information in source code analysis corpora, as shown by the substantial sequence compression achieved by ALPINE.

Context. The transition from left-hand to right-hand polarized Alfvén waves depends on the wavenumber, the ratio of kinetic to magnetic pressure $β$, temperature anisotropy, and ion composition of the plasma. Along with the temperature anisotropy, the electron-to-proton temperature ratio $T_e/T_p$ is of great relevance for the characterization of the thermal properties of a plasma. This ratio varies significantly between different space plasma environments. Thus, studying how variations on this ratio affect the polarisation properties of electromagnetic waves becomes highly relevant for our understanding of the dynamics of space plasmas. Aim. We present an extensive study on the effect of the thermal properties of electrons on the behaviour and characteristics of Alfvénic waves in fully kinetic linear theory, as well as on the transition from electromagnetic ion-cyclotron (EMIC) to kinetic Alfvén waves (KAW). Method. We solve the fully kinetic dispersion relation for oblique electromagnetic waves of the Alfvén branch in a homogenous Maxwellian electron-proton plasma. We quantify the effect of the thermal properties of electrons by varying the electron-to-proton temperature ratio for different configurations of the propagation angle, $β_p=8πnkT_p/B^2$, and wavenumber. Results. We show that the temperature ratio $T_e/T_p$ has strong and non-trivial effects on the polarisation of the Alfvénic modes, especially at kinetic scales and $β_e+β_p>0.5$. We conclude that electron inertia plays an important role in the kinetic scale physics of the KAW in the warm plasma regime, and thus cannot be excluded in hybrid models for computer simulations.

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications involve real-time monitoring, detection, and data analysis. This is challenged by the intermittent activity of IIoT devices (IIoTDs) and their limited battery capacity. Indeed, the former issue makes resource scheduling and random access difficult, while the latter constrains IIoTDs' lifetime and efficient operation. In this paper, we address interconnected aspects of these issues. Specifically, we focus on extending the battery life of IIoTDs sensing events/alarms by minimizing the number of unnecessary transmissions. Note that when multiple devices access the channel simultaneously, there are collisions, potentially leading to retransmissions, thus reducing energy efficiency. We propose a threshold-based transmission-decision policy based on the sensing quality and the network spatial deployment. We optimize the transmission thresholds using several approaches such as successive convex approximation, block coordinate descent methods, Voronoi diagrams, explainable machine learning, and algorithms based on natural selection and social behavior. Besides, we propose a new approach that reformulates the optimization problem as a $Q$-learning solution to promote adaptability to system dynamics. Through numerical evaluation, we demonstrate significant performance enhancements in complex IIoT environments, thus validating the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed solutions. We show that Q-learning performs the best, while the block coordinate descending method incurs the worst performance. Additionally, we compare the proposed methods with a benchmark assigning the same threshold to all the devices for transmission decision. Compared to the benchmark, up to 94\% and 60\% reduction in power consumption are achieved in low-density and high-density scenarios, respectively.

The Fifth-Generation (5G) wireless communications networks introduced native support for Machine-Type Communications (MTC) use cases. Nevertheless, current 5G networks cannot fully meet the very stringent requirements regarding latency, reliability, and number of connected devices of most MTC use cases. Industry and academia have been working on the evolution from 5G to Sixth Generation (6G) networks. One of the main novelties is adopting Distributed Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (D-MIMO) networks. However, most works studying D-MIMO consider antenna arrays with no movement capabilities, even though some recent works have shown that this could bring substantial performance improvements. In this work, we propose the utilization of Access Points (APs) equipped with Rotary Uniform Linear Arrays (RULAs) for this purpose. Considering a spatially correlated Rician fading model, the optimal angular position of the RULAs is jointly computed by the central processing unit using particle swarm optimization as a function of the location of the active devices. Considering the impact of imperfect location estimates, our numerical results show that the RULAs's optimal rotation brings substantial performance gains in terms of mean per-user spectral efficiency. The improvement grows with the strength of the line-of-sight components of the channel vectors. Given the total number of antenna elements, we study the trade-off between the number of APs and the number of antenna elements per AP, revealing an optimal number of APs for the cases of APs equipped with static ULAs and RULAs.

The last mile of unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) for semantic segmentation is the challenge of solving the syn-to-real domain gap. Recent UDA methods have progressed significantly, yet they often rely on strategies customized for synthetic single-source datasets (e.g., GTA5), which limits their generalisation to multi-source datasets. Conversely, synthetic multi-source datasets hold promise for advancing the last mile of UDA but remain underutilized in current research. Thus, we propose DEC, a flexible UDA framework for multi-source datasets. Following a divide-and-conquer strategy, DEC simplifies the task by categorizing semantic classes, training models for each category, and fusing their outputs by an ensemble model trained exclusively on synthetic datasets to obtain the final segmentation mask. DEC can integrate with existing UDA methods, achieving state-of-the-art performance on Cityscapes, BDD100K, and Mapillary Vistas, significantly narrowing the syn-to-real domain gap.

Multi-planet systems are a perfect laboratory for constraining planetary formation models. A few of these systems present planets that come very close to mean motion resonance, potentially leading to significant transit-timing variations (TTVs) due to their gravitational interactions. Of these systems, K2-138 represents a excellent laboratory for studying the dynamics of its six small planets (with radii ranging between $\sim1.5$ -- $3.3 R_\oplus$), as the five innermost planets are in a near 3:2 resonant chain. In this work, we aim to constrain the orbital properties of the six planets in the K2-138 system by monitoring their transits with CHaracterising ExOPlanets Satellite (CHEOPS). We also seek to use this new data to lead a TTV study on this system. We obtained twelve light curves of the system with transits of planets $d$, $e$, $f,$ and $g$. With these data, we were able to update the ephemerides of the transits for these planets and search for timing transit variations. With our measurements, we reduced the uncertainties in the orbital periods of the studied planets, typically by an order of magnitude. This allowed us to correct for large deviations, on the order of hours, in the transit times predicted by previous studies. This is key to enabling future reliable observations of the planetary transits in the system. We also highlight the presence of potential TTVs ranging from 10 minutes to as many as 60 minutes for planet $d$.

Using the~$B^+\rightarrow χ_{c1}(3872)K^+$decay, the $χ_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow ψ(2S)γ$ process is observed for the first time and the ratio of its partial width to that of the $χ_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ$ decay is measured to be $$ \frac{Γ_{χ_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow ψ(2S)γ}}
{Γ_{χ_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ}} = 1.67 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.12 \pm0.04 , $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the $ψ(2S)$ and $J/ψ$ mesons. The measured ratio makes the interpretation of the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state as a~pure $D^0\bar{D}^{*0}+\bar{D}^0D^{*0}$ molecule questionable and strongly indicates a sizeable compact charmonium or tetraquark component within the $χ_{c1}(3872)$ state.
